Intermezzo in E minor - Manuel Ponce -Nancy Fierro, piano
Intermezzo no.1 in E minor
Manuel Maria Ponce (1882-1948)
Manuel Maria Ponce was a revered Mexican composer who left a large catalogue of compositions including music for voice, instrumental ensembles, orchestra and his beloved instruments, the piano and guitar. He gained international renown with “Estrellita” (1925) a song which quickly became a global favorite. Though he was trained in the classical tradition, he loved Mexican folk tunes and often blended their style into his classical works. By doing so, he revived Mexican musical language and pioneered a movement of Mexican musical nationalism.
Ponce’s Intermezzo no 1 in E minor (1909) shows earmarks of his distinctive musical style: beautifully crafted, lyrical melodies that evoke deep feelings of sadness and longing tinged with nostalgia. Its mixture of Spanish and European coloring shows how Ponce effectively combines vitalizing Mexican folk style with a traditional classical way of writing. This deeply introspective piece filled with expressive nuances challenges the pianist to play with a highly sensitive. For good reason, this charming gem of music has become one of Ponce’s most popular works.

Claude Debussy (1862-1918) Clair de Lune L 75 (pub.1905) Debussy’s music always offers the pianist an opportunity to create a variety of subtle tone colors. For instance, Clair de Lune begins with a whisper of sound, one which Debussy imagines could evoke the serenity of a gentle moonlight filtering through the leaves of a tree on a calm summer eve. He asks the pianist to play very, very softly...

Nancy, I am in love with this piece! I have never heard it before, and you play it with such sensitivity and authenticity! Perfect! I have to listen again and again. Thank you for sharing your art and your talent, Nancy!
Lovely! Thank you for so graciously sharing your wonderful talent.
Excellent !
A lovely piece played with great sensitivity. Thanks, Nancy!
Beautiful!
Lovely Nancy. Very touching . and tender rendition. Thank you Marian
Beautiful music and performance. I love the counterpoint.
So I just listened to Katia Buniatishvilli play this in a concert hall and got bored. Katia's rests were too long and and I felt that her rendition was overly dramatic. Then I came over here. What I found here was steady tempo with the use of subtle dynamics and a melody elicited from feel. Thanks for posting Nancy Fierro!
💞🌷💞
Very very skilled approach to my favourite piece. My suggestion for you is to record your Grand piano with a proper set of microphones. In this video, I could hear the room and the reverberation was disturbing. Sorry to say that. But apart from that, this was stunningly good.
Thanks for you comment and observations. You have a great ear. And yes, I agree with your comments about the microphones. Am researching better choices.
❤
Bravo played beautifully!
Best version I've heard in a while.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I just finished listening to Seong Jin Cho's exquisite rendition of this piece and yours is just as exquisite!! Beautiful!
