I don't think whitewashing or blackwashing is okay. In anime, there aren't many black characters because most anime is made IN JAPAN. They use japanese language and tradition making it obvious that the culture is important to the show. There are dark-skinned asians but changing a character's whole racial background is not okay.
my problem with black washing is the characters they decide to change. like you said in the video some character race is integral to them, i believe they we need more diversity in media, but I also don't want my favorite characters races changed whether their black or white. that just my opinion.
Can you give a few examples of characters that were changed to a black person that shouldn’t have been due to it being integral to their role? I see this comment a lot but I’ve never seen any actual evidence.
I remember seeing a post about people wanting magneto to be black. People argue against it since magneto was supposed to be jewish and it played a major part to his character. I can honestly say that I haven’t seen many change that I don’t agree with. There are just certain characters I’m used to seeing a certain way.
@@booboosparkz the magneto change was some that was legit going to happen. They also made many change in the new Batman series. Like I said in my previous comment I can care less unless it a race change bout a character I care about.
Starfire's a Tamaranean with orange skin? She's never been white and was often written using any general "foreigner" mannerisms and anything "exotic". Unless I'm missing something important.
Yeh, I don't like her being white or black. I feel like where she comes from is important to her character as well. Just like black panther being white is wrong.
@@WoahMate-dl3ex agreed! His Catwoman vs Black Panther litmus test is honestly the newest tool in my discussion arsenal for sure!! Another thought I think you may appreciate based on your reply: with non human people (aliens, mermaids, etc) it's SO silly when people act like siblings have to be the same human ethnicity. The jokes about King Triton getting around, as if fish-mammal chimera would have their skin colouration be determined the same way ours is, were hilariously always being cracked by "why make it about race" commenters.
@@ScientObject40 neat! I always saw her as Japanese, but that could just be because Sailor Moon conditioned me to see superhero alien princesses in skirts as Japanese. And the animated series' eyebrows remind me of a Cardian from Sailor Moon R who is very Japanese (a cherry blossom geisha demon, she's amazing).
yeah same I didn't see her as any race ever so her portrayal by a black actress doesn't mean anything to me, because starfire isn't a human, she's supposed to be from another planet so it doesn't change anything what race she's being portrayed as because she's not really any of them.
The ppl who were even defending the blackwashing didn't even give give reasonable points or didn't give points at all. They just said you're racist if you don't like them. 😂😂😂😂.
There's literally a guy in the video that explains why "black washing" isn't a bad thing. Hit dog will holler. Just admit being called r@cists hurts you because you are.
Honestly I agree with letting your creativity flow when it comes to darkening the skin tone for fun but the moment you force it or have bad intentions it completely ruins it. I do want and encourage more canonly diverse characters in future shows because I still look forward to such things. On a positive note I’m really excited to watch a new animated disney film called “Iwájú” which takes place in Nigeria and has- obviously mostly nigerian folk. I love seeing different cultures portrayed in films because I get to see the beauty but I also learn new things
Tbh it’s so stupid to blackwash characters at all, and the people defending it don’t realise that they’re defending such a distasteful practice. They want to fill a quota for diversity, so rather than putting thought into creating an actually likeable black character, they just go “yea, make that one black to get them off our backs and let’s move on”. It’s lazy at best and at worst it could be seen as dismissive of black people.
Imo I think that changing characters races like in the little mermaid movie is disrespectful to the original, also if Ariel lives deep in the sea, she would be pale
it has no other importance so it rlly doesnt matter tho if her race was sumn to her character and it actually mattered then yeah but it rlly just doesnt
this topic of trying to see yourself in media so more narcissistic and accepting black washed characters is like accepting governments handouts rather than wanting original characters also most Africans don't claim black panther because it only represents west Africa and its so stereotypical that it becomes insulting furthermore now people think its a country
I personally feel that backwashing can still be a thing IF your intetionally changing a character skin if you do it out of spite the reason why people say that backwashing doesn't exist is because it's rare to see people do it out of spite but if there was a intentional Irish person for example while there probably are darker skinned Irish people the majority of them are white but at the end washing is washing no matter what the skin color is honestly 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
They moved the time period of Annie so they had to change her race. Irish looking girls (red heads) in America were one of the more unlikely children to be adopted that's what made it such a scandal that Annie was adopted. (Obviously a black girl would have fit this as well but baby steps probably would have been a lot harder to get that idea produced at the time) When it was remade they changed the time setting so they changed the race as black girls were now the one more unlikely to be adopted
Honestly I think if your beliefs on white and black washing can be summed up with just good or bad then you’re automatically wrong. Its a case by case thing, if it’s good for the character then typically it’s ok, but if it’s a race change just for the sake of it then it’s probably not gonna be good because the motivations behind it aren’t
Yeah I genuinely don’t care, like you said I just want the character to be accurate, I don’t even pay attention to their race or appearance. 🤷🏾♀️ I love the art though, your rendering looks so smooth and cleaner
@@rhizvo108 you know right the just can't pick any character from the street just cause is that specif race they didn't find a white woman who could act better they gonna cancel the film cause they didn't find that particular race ?!? It only matters if it is important to the stories like black panther you can't obviously show a white guy an Indian or any other race cause is important to the story.
@@bustergundo516yall will see a black main character and instantly start going crazy without even watching the show to see if the character is actually well written
Same with Nick Fury in the comics. He's white in the comics, but black in the movies. We don't care about the skin color of the damn character. We care if they can carry the role and if they aren't in it for the sole reason of being progressive.
That's the problem, you guys didn't even see if the black women playing areil did a good job, because the first thing you saw was her skin and it's funny because your the same people that say "I don't see skin color"
@@luls8853 I mean of course it's the first thing they see when the skin colour is so vastly different than the original. I don't think they should be hating on the actress but the fact that they're upset about about such a drastic change of a character they admire is completely valid. If whitewashing is viewed as bad then idr see a reason as to why blackwashing isn't.
@@Jay-sl1pf because with white washing it's done purposely or as people say "to fix the character" but if you look around there's over a billion shows and movies and animes with y'all color in it y'all never really had to worry about not being included or represented. Where as blackwashing is done to help show representation in places we aren't represented in like a lot of the animes you see from years ago to now there isn't a lot of our skin. we're not changing it for different reasons then y'all do we change it to include ourselves in places we aren't. The only reason y'all are mad is because of Ariels race but if y'all watched the movie it's the exact fucking same just with a black person and the little mermaids race had nothing to do with her story she a non existent character..
Thank you! I love that someone else is of the same opinion, but you stated it so much better than I could. I love the diversity as long as, like you said, it’s not forced. And I will never understand how somebody can go after fanart or cosplayers if they are cosplaying a character that is a different race or gender. It’s art. I don’t see people going after the Snow White Boba Fett cosplayer and telling them that they aren’t canon.😅
I wasn't sure how I was gonna land on this video, but I'm pretty much with you. There's all kinds of different writers, animators, and characters... and unless it's part of their character, it really shouldn't matter... as long as it's generally respectful to the source material. The one HUGE turn straight off a cliff that I will say (despite admittedly frankly loving the character overall) was CW's version of James "Jimmy" Olsen being over 6 feet tall, and frankly... tough as nails. I loved that character, and the whole Guardian arc... but like... that was so different from the source it was unrecognizable... and I think there were other motivations behind the casting. Yet again, 100% dig the character, but I think they could have had Jimmy semi-closer to the source material, and had everything else 100% the same with that character, and I'd have just enjoyed it that much more. I do low-key think there has been a bit of a targeting of redheads in the media (but then I'm a bit biased toward liking red hair), but I can live with the alternate universe idea. I've been doing that for years so that I can still watch TV. Anyways, good points all around. I dig it. Stay awesome!
Honestly when I see a character different somewhere in the movies, anime and stuff Am like....okay they make it look different. It looks cool in my eyes cause it seems like a little reboot. Think of it like how ben 10, or batman, and other characters who look different in each series they are in.
When it comes to the design philosophies behind a character's appearance, you know when the intention behind their race is for them to be black (With cases like Black Panther and Tiana), that should be respected. As long as the foundation of the character is still there, it doesn't matter to me if they're whatever race the writer chooses. Art challenges like blacktober I feel aren't harmful akin to whitewashing a character. I can't begin to tell you how many posts I've seen of people whitewashing black or Hispanic characters when the 2nd Spiderverse movie dropped 😮💨
The Little Mermaid Live Action debate, imho, was hilarious in retrospective because people had to pretend that Ariel mattered compared to Ursula. OG Disney villains were most of the time way more interesting than the heroes (that's why they are all being rewritten as Anti-heroes now lol) Wow... that Catwoman speech tho... checkmate on both sides !! Well played, sir, well played !!! Also, damn right : "The Multiverse is Vast and Diverse." Glad to find a fellow believer !! BTW, Oda said that Nico Robin would be Russian IRL so... no, not quite whitewashing : she indeed just lost her tan after staying away from Alabasta ! Plus, don't forget : Japanese Beauty Standards do consider that a fair skin is more appealing (and yet, they also got the GYARU trend lol) so, ... fanservice... ?
I love Tiana and new ariel had an amazing voice but also people hated Velma because none of them acted like their characters and for some reason hated their audience everyone unanimously agreed to hate velma
If you believe that white washing is bad then black wishing is bad too Simple as that My take has always been fanart is freedom but as soon as you try to make your headcannon reality I’m done Whitewashing on Twitter for art is usually a troll but most of the blackwashing i’ve seen everywhere is either people changing the source material or they believe they’re “fixing” something that was perfectly fine
I only care about the original character designs by the artist/creator. I have seen people on Twitter like to whitewash and change the entirety of the characters because they felt the drawing was wrong. Just leave people’s work alone.
Okay listen I don't care about black washing all I care about is not to change a character's race or skin color in the middle of a season episode or whatever I'm not trying to be in the middle of my hero academia but then all of a sudden Deku is black
They don’t need to change the already existing characters into black characters or generally poc in order to make more diverse. All they have to do is get creative and make a poc character. Nobody wants the character to be recreated as a different color. We want a new creative character who’s a poc. In this case, Disney could’ve just picked out an African folklore (or any folklore/fairytale from any country) & kept the character as of color depending on the origin. Basically, what I’m trying to say is: we don’t need remake of a character in a different complexion for diversity. Just create something creative & new for a poc in mind
I don't really care what the color of a character's skin is, but their skin color shouldn't be changed. The exception to that is an actor/actress that plays the role really well, like Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
Honestly... I have no issue with race swapping characters if the story doesn't revolve around race in general or a cultural aspect--I don't feel these characters are being race swapped destroys the story and if it does then the foundation of the story might've already been brittle or weak to begin with. I've seen plenty of ideals thrown out in media revolving around certain expectations certain cultures should have for a particular counterpart and that becomes the main focus of the story. The King and I was a great movie in 1956 which was modernized to a 1999 version later on no one really cried about it (much!) All in all good video, loved your drawing
It’s all about the story if the story is Snow White and her skin what legit is white like snow and then having the most gorgeous black woman there wouldn’t really make sense because the story starts with her description yk what I mean? The poem I think or it was something I mean would you watch a movie with Rosa parks as a white woman I know a BIG thing I said I don’t mean it aggressive or anything rude just if it’s important to the story of a person and yk someone who was alive then the character’s shouldn’t be yk “black washed” or something I mean Arielle was green so it’s not that serious Velma is actually a whole horrible show because she is a horrible person in that one and the others idk I don’t truly care but I do care about the importance of the story and it’s narrative
I tend to agree with you. For the most part, as long as the characters are well done, if their race/ethnicity isn't integral to their character or story somehow, then it doesn't matter. Ariel being black for example, that's fine. Personally I think when you have alien characters (like Starfire), keep them orange (or however they look), but mostly, yeah, if the character's race/ethnicity doesn't really impact the character, and the character is done well (as you said, not being shoved down our throats), it's fine. Also, if people wanna do fanart where they imagine the characters as different ethnicities, that's fine too. Just be respectful about it. Saying "I fixed your character" and then changing their race (whether black to white, white to black, Asian to Hispanic or whatever) is just rude in my opinion, and yes, it is often done for ragebait reasons. But if you are just having fun reimagining a character, and you are respecting the original, that's fine, go nuts. And I am well aware of the history of erasing black people in our media, but I do think a lot of the comments/reactions (here and other places) are very quick to assume no malicious intent behind any blackwashing. I have definitely seen posts before where someone blackwashed a character and said, "I fixed your character." Sure, whitewashing has a much bigger history behind it, and ultimately is a bigger deal. Personally though, I see this as basically being a version of "black people can't be racist towards white people." Sometimes it's fine, and sometimes it's not, depending on the context.
My thing is they lived their whole life with predominantly white media. And as soon as black or any minority gets their fame yall say “OH ITS EVERYWHERE!!” They’re in alternate universe! Gawd dang it!! Yall still have the original! This is an AU!
Actually the original catwoman is a black lady, but then her powers get passed to a white looking character, as long as she looks white people don't complain. haley berries catwoman wasn't looking to hit people with diversity nonsense.. When people use the argument that its okay because their skin doesn't matter and yet got to point out a black character whose skin some now matters is called being a hypocrite. If it's a new universe while lazy, it would make sense that the character could be gay, black, asian, female etc. And people would only complain cause there is no reason to change a character while ignoring its a new universe.. I have no issues with for example transformers changing a character like sunstreaker to be female because the design is good its not being woke and it would be interesting to see a female version of him. People don't have issues with different iterations of characters.. now if you change the main universe character.. because ESG/DEI woke nonesense there is a problem.. 616 peter should never be black, gay and etc.. he's white, jewish and straight. Now another universe could do something like that, but if its back by woke shit i wont read it or care for it. But the whole different universe thing can be a bit lazy to be honest not totally against it.. but if suddenly peter dies and he is replaced by a black version of him.. from another universe that shits gonna piss people off. So there are scenarios where you can do it but it should be extremely rare.. now if you want representation.. and etc you can create new characters no reason to change other characters.. you can't use one logic for one thing and then turn around and say you can't use that logic for the other because race matters when its black panther.. but suddenly peters race doesnt matter even though hes originally white. Seeing alot of white characters more than you say any other race is normal because the country is mostly white.. almost like thats part of it rather than racism. If I go to japan im going to see majority of Japanese characters.. rather than brown people like me. People of color like me should feel disrespected when they have to steal from a white character and now suddenly have a black, spanish etc character take over for them... because it says we dont deserve our own original characters.. so they have to steal from the white man, to give to me.. which is ironic because the very people crying that whites steal from others.. is the same people okay with stealing from whites too.. Like you can't complain about this thing and set standards for it.. and then turn around and pretend does standards and complaints shouldn't be applied to the person complaining about. I wanted to see a spaniard spiderman.. I created a character from spain, with spider like powers.. that has nothing to do with peter, doesn't even meet peter and doesnt need peter to tell him how bad ass and so much better he or she than him. Look at ironman, he has rhody.. and yet instead of making rhody the next iron hereo aka war machine.. that takes over they make it a black girl named iron heart that basically goes ww2 villains on people.. because of some misguided sjw hive mindset. But we are supposed to treat her like shes this amazing hero because her gender and skin color.. if she was a villain people wouldn't have complained. nick furry was black in ultimate spiderman.. but if i recall he was replaced.. by someone black and thus thats what he is.. but i dont remember it being because of diversity and again its a different universe. If captain america dies.. someone can be inspired by him and create their own personal based on him.. like for example falcon who is black took the shield.. and modified his costume to be based on steves.. but he shouldnt be captain america.. his name should of been american falcon or something like that so you can have an original character.. who is respecting the legacy of his dead friend. Miles coming to 616 and suddenly being named spider man instead of having his own name while peter is still alive is stupid and also the people of new york would be pissed that someone else is going around beined named spider man if people already lost the one and only spiderman.. he should of introduced himself as a new spider-character.. with his own name and build his own reputation as a hero instead of stealing his reputation for the most part from peter.. peter created the spiderman person because spider man is peter.. miles isn't spider man because hes not peter.. well he is but with a reskin unfortunately but he shouldn't ever be like that.. he should be his own person with his own struggles like my spider character.. honestly comics should make a white panther character who happens to be white and have him hang around black panther work together and etc. but this woke nonsense is annoying.. i shouldn't be catered to because my skin color or ethnic background.. I should be given my own characters with original background and etc.. that have their own flare and style.. to pretend like every super hero name, costume is a mantle is lazy, bullshit and dishonest. If ariel from mermaid is a red head with white pale skin then leave her the fuck alone and just create an original mermaid princess from another place in the sea who is brown, latina and etc. ariel did have different skin colored friends and no one complained. Purist can be a problem when they lack the logical thought process at times.. but people who like woke shit are a major problem because they want to revise and change things because "insert oppression victimhood mindset here." and this is coming from a person of color like myself. ua-cam.com/video/_rH-u9lUZCQ/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/-MZ3Fxk5dY4/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/n71RZ9WipW4/v-deo.html
bruh you don't go to bed white and wake up black there are enough black ,white ,hispanic ecs what they need to do is borow a few characters from the same verse and or just do a cameo ,cuz at this point white and black washing feels wrong (w all do resspect(: )
For me, the industry forces this fake variety to cover up the absolute fact that there's no true representation in the industry in terms of minority with power to decide how to represent itself. Ariel, for instance, is a very european character, the place she lives is based on european monarchy so the values they are representing are very european. Changing her race does not serve for us to perceive African culture any differente, but rather reinforce european costumes as the standard.
ngl i was kinda hesitant to click on this, but i think you nailed it. (i also think half the people commenting here did not watch the video, just dumped their opinion and dipped. lol) i think the issue of "blackwashing" is way overblown, it really ain't that deep like. if someone gets so offended about their oh so precious white characters getting the melanin beam, i think they ought to investigate exactly why they have that reaction (it's usually racism, wink wink). i don't think it's the same thing as whitewashing, because instead of that being about an under-represented community wanting to be seen (and, i should add, whose characters are way more likely to have the theme of race tied to their story), it is about pissing people off and erasing representation. side note, your ariel drawing is beautiful :)
Yeah for me it’s the same, like you can’t change t’challa cause he’s literally an African king but someone like Aragorn is cool to change cause nothing about his character that needs him to be white
The one piece thing was just the okd animation having a weird color apparently and now usopp and robin are the correct color as oda drew. Or so i heard. I also heard sailor moon turned blue so, blue washing? Idk
To be fair in the beginning, Major in the live-action Ghost movie was the brain of a young woman put into a cybernetic body, and the villain of that version (who also helped to create the body and other similar projects) is a white guy; you could technically say she was made in his image to some degree. Also, Nicola Peltz was cast in the role despite an allegedly "subpar" audition because the producers owed her wealthy father a favor or something, so no one truly had a choice in the casting. And several of those live-action adaptations of anime from Netflix included changing the setting to something more familiar to general American audiences; hence the MC of Death Note being a white guy instead of Japanese (though the Japanese live-action version is still better). But yes, I do agree with this video, overall. Race swapping, or even gender/sexuality swapping existing characters for the sake of diversity is just forced. It's not legitimate, but artificial. But not all instances of this happening are inherently bad. I wish people would stop starting fights over this, but that's dreaming at this point. The culture war of "wokeness" has become a rageful dick-measuring contest between fake woke narcissists projecting their closeted bigotry onto others, and anti-woke reactionaries being so fed up with the smears and attacks that now they actively embrace the labels and go out of their way to be as hateful and bigoted as possible just to spite the other side.
Starfire is an alien who is supposed to be orange not black as that is just the skin colour of her people, I do agree that whitewashing is bad but blackwashing should also be viewed as bad. I say that instead of making characters who have been depicted as that skin colour should stay that skin colour if you want to make a black character make a black character, if you want to make an Asian character make an Asian character but you cant just swap someone's race, like ariel is commonly depicted as white so don't make her black, Velma and Shaggy have always been white so don't just make them black. Also from the blackwashing protectors all I got was your racist and deal with it like. In conclusion both are and should be acknowledged as bad
It's not a big deal but there is some characters that can't be changed, like Batman, a billionaire in a period that black people have a lot of money was rare and the society was racist, it just doesn't fit, but if it's on a universe were the things were inverted and racist directed to black people was directed to white people, then you can give a excuse Sorry for the bad English, i hope you understand Edit: i just remembered about snow white
About last part with different universes, i have to disagree. There are different versions of Spider man, not Peter Parker. There could be different versions of Mermaid, but by your definition, they should not be called Ariel.
HEY! mermaids and sirens are different species as mermaids are half human half fish and sirens are half human half mermaid, if you could be a bit more respectful about this that would be amazing 💙
Nico robin wasn't white washed she was white in the manga but for some reason colouring mistakes were made and she ended up dark skinned they simply used the timeskip as a way to make her look manga accurate i guess weather is the in universe explanation. Oh and mcu mj isn't mary jane she's Michelle jones their not the same person
I don’t agree with whitewashing or blackwashing. Just give us the characters with their proper race. I personally have nothing against any race, any color of skin because that’s all just skin deep to me, it’s just an observation that I make and move on from. I try to look at the person underneath. All this to say that I grew up with a white Ariel so I want a white Ariel. I grew up with a black Tiana so I want a black Tiana, anything else doesn’t feel right to me. I won’t hate on other people’s opinions about whether or not it feels right to them so please don’t hate on mine; it just doesn’t feel right to me.
@Chillmonger is a black Canadian comics content UA-camr who has some pretty interesting and nuanced thoughts on this topic. I don't agree 100% with his take (although I do agree with a lot of it), but I think it's well argued and worth listening to.
Honestly, I won't say much as I am a melanin malnourished individual... Both are fine so long as the intentions are fine. I've never seen too much of a problem with blackwashing so long as the intentions weren't to force representation where no one was worried about it, like Twitter "fixed it 🤗" artists. When Samuel L Jackson played Nick Fury, it was fitting. Hotdiggedydemon did a long video talking about the VA for the Simpsons character Apu, who was voiced by a white man for a majority of the franchise. I agree wholeheartedly with the Catwoman point AJ brought up- If their race isn't part of their character, then don't make it part of their character. Blacktober is harmless fun, but if someone whitewashed a character just to experiment and not to undermine they're black- it's still harmless fun! (I'd like to suggest looking into an AA artist that race swapped Cloud, Tifa, and Barret from FF7. It's really interesting imo and highlights my point of experimental intentions vs ACTUAL whitewashing. 👍) To bring up One Piece, I've seen many (obv white) people saying that Nojiko was blackwashed in the live action. Oda himself was involved in the casting, which meant the author wanted her to be a PoC. Not to mention that Nojiko was always racially ambiguous during the Arlong Park arc since she and Nami were BOTH adopted. It's kinda sad that conservative whites just can't stand different races simply EXISTING. Hopefully one day in the distant future we can all just let bygones be bygones. 🙇♀️
Acting and fan art why is that even a part of that that's a whole different thing from the original series you can't just change the original series the next season of the next three episodes think of this you watch the full season of a randomized anime the next season all the characters colors and skin color uno reversed that don't make sense again I didn't even know about this concept I'm just now learning about this so I can't make a valid point but what I'm seeing is people just don't really care about skin color also not to mention why are we complaining about characters that are not even real?
Like it shouldn't matter what race that non-fiction character should be. Like bio movies where it matters like when they mike tyson bio movie it should be black actor not white actor and vice versa if they do tony hawk bio movie
I don't really see whitewashing or blackwashing as bad as long as it's not done by companies/its official but I also like nick fury so maybe I'm a hypocrite or perhaps, ironically its more than black or white.
I don't think it's okay to blackwash characters because I don't approve of the alternative of changing a minority to a white character, characters should stay who they are regardless if they are written around it or not to respect the source material.
People when they see someone white wash a black fictional character: I sleep ☺☺ People when they see someone black wash a white fictional character: Real shit? 😡😡
What is a recasting? I can’t tell if that’s when the fans say what actor they want in a movie or show to play their favorite character Or is it what Hollywood has been doing with all these reshoots Either way He don’t have that same mindset when it comes to the revenue 6:57 and that’s no good
I don't think whitewashing or blackwashing is okay throws a character's whole race out the window is terrible, it ruins the character and I'm not trying to be racist or anything, it is just bad and not representing the character at all or their race, so no one should whitewash or blackwash any character
4:38 someone should tell him that’s not new that’s called stealing from the DEAD 5:30 okay he is just beyond help don’t listen to him Just because he’s too bigoted to pick up a book he’d realize only like 4 of those characters haven’t gotten their own comic
I strongly believe you should make every character look how they were designed, but if you are going to change it, it should eather be a change that is hard to notice or improve the character. Otherwise you're just changing the character for no good reason, and I hate that.
Look, buddy. I couldn't finish watching this after you said you didn't care if white characters were black-washed. I'm not racist, I have plenty of black friends and family, never had anything against them because of their race. What I DO have something against is when the modern day people try to FORCE inclusivity into everything cause "people of color don't get enough representation". Ariel's movie takes place in Europe, which is a predominantly white people country. So yes, it'd make more sense for Ariel to be white. Also, both Ariel's parents are white, so how are their children black, Asian, white, and basically any race when both their parents are white? If their going to completely change characters in such a good movie, INCLUDING THEIR NAMES, they could AT LEAST make it make sense.
The movie doesn't really need to make sense especially when it is a kid show like most kids don't even know is ambiented in Europe the film ain't popular enough for race to matter and doesn't add anything to the story but Immagine black panther being any other races other than black or Peter Parker being any other race other than white in this case it doesn't matter BUT cause of the popularity spider man has many people wouldn't even watch it but the mermaid film isn't so popular to really matter she could be any race that has immigrated in Europe and wouldn't make a difference till when it make sense like if she was Chinese that would be a stretch cause not many migrate to Europe but Indian in the other hand is more realistic cause many go in Europe.
Stop changing the skin color of characters from semi-historical movies. If a place is mentioned, you have to put the correct nation in the correct part of the fictional or real world. If it's cold and the original draws elements from Scottish culture (HTTYD), don't make the cast dark-skinned because that makes no sense. In something like Dragon Ball, there's no place Goku comes from. Not Africa, not Asia, not Europe. He just came from space, so he could be anyone. In fanart or other adaptations, he could just not be white. Do whatever you want with someone like Spiderman or Velma. But you have to do it properly. Like Spiderverse did. Not like Velma's new show. Thank you very much.
Me personally I really didn't care when they were white washing some light tan character because hey, a tan is hard to remove 😂 but Black washing is crazy tho they even have to change character development because of race that wild
Yeah I disagree with you man. I want accuracy of what the original creator intended either washing is dumb, it even worse if they were real people. What gives someone the right to screw with what someone intended. White Blade would piss me off as much as black Ariel does, her story came from Europe folk tales. What give corporations the right to ruin some else's vision. You're an artist man how would you feel if someone just changed your characters you put effort into and sold it saying this is the new better version. And I don't mean in a fan art way.
Like I understand that you don't like it and I'm making a point about it in all seriousness let's think about this like adults why are we complaining about fictional character skin color? They're not real they're not going to become real so their skin color doesn't matter you can't even say that oh yeah the movies The realistic movies of Little mermaid that's real it's acting it's fake it's never going to be real so again why are we complaining about fictional character skin colors? When they're never real in the first place Case closed argument finished
you're skin color is based by UV the fact african or european are their like they are is bc uv so if u take ariel she live under water so less uv so she cannot be black (and before anyone say "you're just a racist i'm metis so i have parent of both)
@@dilion1852 🤡 she got the role because no one who auditioned sung better than her. She just happened to be a black woman. At the end of the day The Little Mermaid isn’t real so don’t think about it too much 🤣🤣
The problem is that people on either side of it can't keep the same energy. saying that white washing and black washing are different is hypocritical. You can't have a problem with one, but come up with some bs reason like the second dude to why the other isn't bad. And think about it like this. If you are one of those people who are weirdly obsessed with representation, why would you be fine with getting sloppy seconds of a character. That's basically saying that they couldn't put in effort to make a new character , and just recycled a used one for you. The real problem with swaps is that they usually do more than just the skin color, outright making the character only alike in name only. This is usually for the worse like Amber from Invincible, or Velma from Velma. But there are very few good exceptions like Isaac from the Castlevania tv series, because in his case, they were tackling the character in a different way than just ticking a box for a demographic.
@@michaelpalmer537 okay a post about people wanting something and an actual change are two different things. I’m guessing you don’t have any examples?
For me Starfire was always Indian looking.
Wanna read my comment? I think I worded it well.

@@TheLovesnowangel why is he racist???
Like I think black washing is equal to white washing
Real
it has no other importance so it rlly doesnt matter tho if her race was sumn to her character and it actually mattered then yeah but it rlly just doesnt
This is... really stupid😭
this topic of trying to see yourself in media so more narcissistic and accepting black washed characters is like accepting governments handouts rather than wanting original characters also most Africans don't claim black panther because it only represents west Africa and its so stereotypical that it becomes insulting furthermore now people think its a country
"Narcissistic" I'm gonna go ahead and assume you're just white.
(Obviously a black girl would have fit this as well but baby steps probably would have been a lot harder to get that idea produced at the time)
When it was remade they changed the time setting so they changed the race as black girls were now the one more unlikely to be adopted
Wow, I had no idea that was why Annie was a redhead, that’s actually really cool, and you’re right it adds much more context in that case
Personally I don’t care about black washing as long as the characters race isn’t a important part of the story i agree with you
Honestly I think if your beliefs on white and black washing can be summed up with just good or bad then you’re automatically wrong.
I love the art though, your rendering looks so smooth and cleaner

OG Disney villains were most of the time way more interesting than the heroes (that's why they are all being rewritten as Anti-heroes now lol)

Whitewashing on Twitter for art is usually a troll but most of the blackwashing i’ve seen everywhere is either people changing the source material or they believe they’re “fixing” something that was perfectly fine
I prefer to think of every disney movie I dislike as an alternate timeline.
I know it exists but it doesn't concern me.
4:25 bro sounded mad as heck😂😂😂
Let's ask the question as to why are whyte people considered the standard?!?! You people have been shown for CENTURIES. Let others shine.😮
The racist ones running rampant in these comments smh
Robin and usopp are white in the manga so the white washing was just fixing the skin tone to be what it is in the one piece canon
And as soon as black or any minority gets their fame yall say “OH ITS EVERYWHERE!!”
They’re in alternate universe!

3:51 this is true ima back guy and i agree
Look let's be honest, we don't really give a fuck if you're a decent person. The others just make it bigger than it is
4:53 sums me up
Tbh I forgot catwoman films existed lol
It's not a big deal but there is some characters that can't be changed, like Batman, a billionaire in a period that black people have a lot of money was rare and the society was racist, it just doesn't fit, but if it's on a universe were the things were inverted and racist directed to black people was directed to white people, then you can give a excuse
Sorry for the bad English, i hope you understand
Edit: i just remembered about snow white
Oh and mcu mj isn't mary jane she's Michelle jones their not the same person
they do realize that mirko can be light skinned ..correct ? Also, goku has darker skin in manga colors yet people don't whine about it, lmao.
3:51 nah that ain’t Velma that’s a weird person
To bring up One Piece, I've seen many (obv white) people saying that Nojiko was blackwashed in the live action.
Black ariel was ok tbh but black snow white was too much
People when they see someone white wash a black fictional character: I sleep ☺☺
People when they see someone black wash a white fictional character: Real shit? 😡😡
velma can sill be black but her new personality is completly difrent from the original velma (and shagy too well normen now) also ....NO SCOOBY????
What is a recasting? I can’t tell if that’s when the fans say what actor they want in a movie or show to play their favorite character
Or is it what Hollywood has been doing with all these reshoots
Either way
He don’t have that same mindset when it comes to the revenue 6:57 and that’s no good
I don't think whitewashing or blackwashing is okay throws a character's whole race out the window is terrible, it ruins the character and I'm not trying to be racist or anything, it is just bad and not representing the character at all or their race, so no one should whitewash or blackwash any character
8:41 🎉 🎉🎉
4:38 someone should tell him that’s not new that’s called stealing from the DEAD
5:30 okay he is just beyond help don’t listen to him
Just because he’s too bigoted to pick up a book he’d realize only like 4 of those characters haven’t gotten their own comic
I strongly believe you should make every character look how they were designed, but if you are going to change it, it should eather be a change that is hard to notice or improve the character. Otherwise you're just changing the character for no good reason, and I hate that.
Okay now I see 😏
Idk.
You knew why pepole care s-o much what rase is who is just not s-o deep bro
Me personally I really didn't care when they were white washing some light tan character because hey, a tan is hard to remove 😂 but Black washing is crazy tho they even have to change character development because of race that wild
racist? nahhh i'm a furry lol i grew up watching all animal character based movies and shows so i really don't give a damn
At the end of the day The Little Mermaid isn’t real so don’t think about it too much 🤣🤣
There’s barley any black characters to beginning so I don’t blame people who black wash
why are we fighting u must just stay with the origral create like that stop whitewashing or blackwashing characters
Damn, veridis joe you are not. /jk.
this sh*the goes both ways I don't like it keep it how we are used to it
Let's ask the question as to why are whyte people considered the standard?!?! You people have been shown for CENTURIES. Let others shine.
Because there are more white people than black people
Plus why do you dpell white like whyte?????
