Limited runs should turn into made to orders. Once the initial run is done. Every 1000 or so orders come in, a new batch of models, book prints, etc get made and shipped out. Remove a large chunk of FOMO

I think this is how P-Bandai handled their limited runs (at least in the past, haven't bought a model kit in a while), there were still people buying to resell for inflated prices at a later date but it wasn't at the detriment of everyone else who genuinely wanted a kit for themselves.
Hell, isn't this how miniature related kickstarters handle their orders? I'm sure GW can switch to doing it too.

Some great points here. They'd be smart to lower their prices, produce more, and get 40k in more hands. But, the more I learn about GW the more I realize it's about control. It makes sense in a twisted sort of way. The only reason why GW even formed was because the IPs that they blatantly stole from _didn't_ control it with an iron fist and litigate them into oblivion, and 40K is arguably more popular then most of the source material nowadays. They don't want someone doing to them what they did to others.

Dunno whats the hype about stealing GW intellectual property by 3D printing. I mean GW gives people the lore, the books, the content and the universe. GW pays thier employees well does not run child labour and literally treats everybody in the chain well. The Top management and CEO earn less then top management of similar size companies, so they actually dont rob you. And the company is a public listed (owned) company, so basiaclly GW is owned by pension funds and therefore simply secures some peoples retirement.

Jumping through those hoops only to feel like I may miss out on my one large purchase of the year is pretty frustrating.
It seems like the death wing box was available a few hours after release in a lot of regions. I don’t know if that’s because of the scalping measure or the general negativity that popped up around the internet from the DA rules. I’ll take it as a step in the right direction.

An experience I had while Christmas shopping sums up GW quite appropriately I think. I walked past the store, which only had staff members inside. Did some shopping at another shop opposite it for 15-20 mins. Dropped in to ask if they had the House of Artifice book in stock. Got told the dont stock any Necromunda products...
I was the only potential customer to step inside for that period, in a busy shopping mall, during one of the biggest retail periods of the year. Why did they not have at least the core 2023 Necromunda book and some representation of the product? The core book was a new product, and the Apocrypha Necromunda book was an upcoming release.
Its as though the prices are set by the writing team, the retail choices are made by the rules team, and the codexes are written by the accountants.

GW has 0 financial interest in correcting this problem. Its better to have high demand and low supply than the other way around. They have already calculated the amount they wish to sell and its well within the margin that they will turn a significant profit. The only way it would exist is in a fan fiction, low budget, community based thing... which some would argue is good, I like the new stories and models and I also don't mind making the creators of this fictional universe rich

All things considered I'm pretty new to the Warhammer 40K universe. My fandom has been growing for the last several years, and I can definitely say that the Dark Angels are my favorite legion and chapter. I have been getting into the audio books with the Horus heresy, but it's a slow process as there are many entries. You can imagine how ecstatic I was when I heard about the Lion: Son of the Forest novel release. I honestly never knew about any of the special hardcover books that the black library produced. Once I discovered that the Lion had one, I raced to the website to place an order. Suffice it to say, they were long since sold out. eBay was loaded with them, all at extremely marked up prices. This really rubbed me the wrong way since technically the book had not even been shipped yet. At the end of the day, it is just a thing. As someone who works in e commerce, the problem of scalpers is huge.
It is a continuous war between the scalpers and the seller and who has the advantage changes and procedures and technology adaps on both sides.
But the first step is admitting there is a issue and starting to address it, which it appears GW has done with their queueing system.

Lots of good thoughts and observations here, thanks for the video. The Siege of Terra “limited edition” books are a pure own goal from a product design perspective; what they should have done is made it a “deluxe edition” of say 5-10K copies with just 1,000 of those being signed by the author. A really easy fix and is also an upsell for GW (as opposed to standard hardback) as I’m sure more people would invest if they believed getting a full set was easy at retail.
On miniatures GW know they have insufficient capacity. In the H1 Business Update, 24/25 CEO Kevin Rountree acknowledged this and stated they are exploring setting up another manufacturing location, Factory 4. Of course, they’ll need more warehouse space to hold the extra product this facility could provide.

The add to the conversation on scalpers and corporate competence is that a bad reputation is an opportunity cost, meaning that people who would otherwise spend money when they can may instead choose something else because of corporate perception. This seems less important for companies like EA and Activision-Blizzard that have a fanbase of over a billion people, but even publicly traded companies will fire CEOs or replace board members when profits or growth rate is down.
People just don't understand that most outrage spread on the internet is irrational, disorganized, lacks moral or legal basis, or focus on short-term issues (one could say that same about political parties but I digress). This leads to diffusion of issues and disaffected attitudes from those who would want to help out. Thus it is important to band together on select issues and speak out until they are reasonably addressed.

Many years ago I worked in a fraud team for a now defunct online retailer. When we did these kind of deals we had methods to stop multiple purchases via different accounts. Now bots weren't a thing then, however, people would set up multiple accounts - use different cards - addresses but the system would flag these accounts to be manually verified if it found one or more matching details and we'd have to check what was being purchased - the similarity of each account and either approve/deny it. Thats a lot of work for a retailer but it was 14-15 years ago, I'd imagine the technology has improved somewhat and would less rely on a human manually verifying accounts. It would be a financial burden for GW but it would improve their image, especially around these large releases. Oh and just to add we never took payment until the item was in stock ready to be shipped out.

As someone who collected the main books of the HH over a year or so( just about to finish reading End and the Death vol.1 and waiting on paperback vol.2 in May) you definitely have to order from other sources to get the whole series physically oftentimes needing to shell out some serious cash for the books that are out of print and hard to find , and while I had no preference for paperbacks or hardcovers, sometimes the only option was a hardcover of a book that was almost impossible to secure outside of insane EBay asking prices( the only fairly affordable copy of Angels of Caliban I could find living in CA for instance , had to be ordered from a small bookstore in Amsterdam, Old Earth was another pricey hard to find one). Definitely have always felt that the BLibrary needs to up their game as far as stock, especially for older products

For example my first limited edition from the siege of terra was Echoes of Eternity and part of that was because I was in the past ordering my books from indigo and amazon so I had no idea that limited editions actually existed. Later on I ended up acquiring limited editions of Warhawk and Lost and the Damned because I enjoyed them immensely and would like to reread them at some point. I also loved Garro as a character as well.

For me the easiest solution for them is during the announcement of a new box, model, book etc is open a 2 week register your interest period. You put down a deposit (some % of the final cost) and then after that they have however many weeks / months to scale up or down their manufacturing estimates to meet demand so that when the preorder or release window comes around you can pickup your box by paying the final fee if you registered or run the current gauntlet for preorders. No undue costs or storage worries for them and likely fewer disappointed customers.

If you sell out it wasn't a presale WAS IT GW? You just sold an existing number. If it were a presale theyd do exactly as you described. They do not. I hate them and their stupid faces so damn much.

Same person can play multiple spacemarines, as by lore spacemarines tends to have same apearane because of how geneseed shape their bodies most of them(or even all of them) all somehow resemble their genefather. Especially if their gene-seed comes directly from Prymark and so contains most dominant genes. So potentially if Genry Cavil decide to play someone from Alpha Legion he absically can play ANY alpha legioner including Alpharius an Omegon.

Limited releases need to end. There's no reason to make limited editions unless there's a genuine shortage of materials. There's no shortage of leather that can be bound to a book, anyone that wants one of these should be able to get them and that'd solve the scalper problem since good luck scalping a regularly sold product, instead of a "limited" edition. Just have it cost $90 instead of the normal $25 for a book price, and that'll limit the number of people that buy it, really. Then they get more money too, which is what corporations love the most.

Unfortunately, for a majority of those, only the first omnibus is available. After that you have to pay 200$ for second hand, which is a non-starter. I still read it all via e-books, but its a shame. Eventually miniatures will be scanned and pirated for people to download and 3d print themselves outside of GW control or sight. Personally have tried to get hold of even 1 copy of the Ltd Edition books and never managed to. Its cool they have those editions, for me though the look of the binding was the whole reason I wanted them. Best way to solve it is to remove "limited edition" versions, but still allow for the purchase of those books with that binding option (just less the author signature and numbered edition page). The models are a whole different issue, and as a 40k Chaos player, the "year of chaos" was pretty underwhelming as it was impossible to get anything. I was fortunate my local store saved the Chaos Knights Box Set for me, but aside from that didnt manage to get hold of many for a long long time.

I don’t understand why they don’t just announce a timed second printing of the three books. Give people a week to order unsigned second editions and whatever the final number is that’s the edition size. Other publishers have done it like this, everyone is happy, scalpers don’t benefit.
