Mike, Watched this video years ago and started making for the awesome women in my family. Wife got the first two, one of field stone and other from New York slate my buddy gave me. Next were aunts and cousins. So wish my mother was still around to give her one. My dad and brother were both masons and I worked summers with them as a tender so I can appreciate the hard work you do. Just a simple thanks for turning me on to this craft. The women love them. Brian
I gotta give credit where credit is due. I watched this video and decided to make some. They were pretty popular and I made so money on them! This is a pretty cool way to use stone/ granite. Thanks.
Right I've decided I can too make a profit , plus I'm a mason so that'll help right, well keep up the good work and put ur stuff on Offer up and Let go right
@@frankdatank2529 How much are you selling each one for? I'm in Israel so I won't be your competitor but I'm thinking I could make them from the stones around the Sea of Galilee but I have no idea what to price them at.
My wife asked me tonight to help her find a birdbath at Lowe’s tomorrow. I told her, “ instead of buying some plastic garbage, let’s build something we can take pride in” so this video helped me convince even myself to start the build. I’m going to involve my 12 year old son the project, he’s excited too. Excellent content. Love it!
Hi l like the sound of your Uncle Joe, it it’s really lovely that you are sharing your knowledge from your uncle. You have made your demonstration so enjoyable. I am now collecting stone and pebbles to start a project. Thank you for sharing so generously
Recently, I started working with cement. I did a few small prijects. It all started from watching this video! Your patience and details, makes it easier for us who want to make our own yard decorations. Today, I am watching it again because I am ready to maje one 🎉Thank you🎉
Mike.. My pop was my hero, he & my AMAZING mother raised a dozen kids together. . Before my ww2 veteran pop passed away :( He was also a ( Joe ) .. He was a contractor & would do projects just like this on the side for extra $ to feed us all :)... Your simple yet informative video brought back fond memories ! Thank you sir ! & happy holidays - I am Joe Jr ;)
GREAT idea for 10 dollars in supplies and just picking up free stones you can make a beautiful gift that would cost alot at the store. I know what I'm doing for mother's day thanks mike !
Mike I'm an artist and I really appreciate your work very nice bird baths. I've been wanting to surprise my wife with one so thank you for the inspiration.
Mike, thank you for all of your videos and expertise. Im making an uncle Joe birdbath as a Christmas gift. Following your technique with a couple differences. Im in Southern California so Im using stones from the beach. They tend to be rounder and smooth with lots of colors, designs and sizes because they came from all over to end up here. Also, i used an old head from a 22” bass drum for my form. The bottom base will be a 16” tom tom head. Ive never made anything with concrete before but im pretty crafty with most everything so thanks to your old school teaching methods, im learning alot. Figured the uncle Joe birdbath would be a great project for a first go. So far I have the top done and it looks great! Working on the bottom today. Thanks again.
You videos are amazing, no extra talk , always something funny to say, straight practical ! I am learning masonry basic thinks and enjoy beside reading the books watching the techniques and your experience ! Working with stone and bricks is so mind healing i think !
Wow, stunning, just stunning. You would pay a fortune for these at a garden nursery! Glad Uncle Joe left you his amazing bird baths. Your are beautiful too, well done you!
Fiberglass is just a little something more to hold the cement together longer. I use it sometimes when I feel the need. I know a concrete company will only say it is good for one day. but I see it hold stuff together longer like stucco or plaster. it all depends. thanks mike
Thanks Mike. This video inspired me to start working with cement for the first time. So far I have made 2 Uncle Joe bird baths (1 with sump for a small solar pump) and some concrete planters with brick caps. God bless you and your family, hope you’re doing well.
❤Oh I just love your uncles birdbaths!! Thank you for sharing. They are spectacular!! They look stylish and natural. So perfect for what i want. And simple enough. Its time to go rock hunting!! Thank you so much for sharing.
Natural looking, sturdy, and serves the purpose well. Thanks Mike ( and Uncle Joe) for the inspiration and the tutorial. Going to try and make one of these and see if I can build a fountain top of some sort to attract more birds. Hopefully, I can find a drum lid and the other parts I need to make it work!
Enjoy your videos. My grandfather was a mason but was long gone before me coming along . This project was unbelievably instructional, and a real work of art. Also view most of the Ads that precede your presentations, that pertain to home projects, products or maintenance.
Mike, I simply love these bird baths (thank you Uncle Joe). Thank you for teaching and sharing. I feel inspired to build one. I immediately subscribed to your channel and... oh wow, there is so many things we can improve and build. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I love this. My grandfather in S.D. made one of these and it was always in our yard when I was growing up. I wish I had it, but maybe will make one of my own. Your's are beautiful. May my grandparents and parents RIP. Very nostalgic...Bless you and yours.
Thanks for the reply. I'm having a heck of a time finding a barrel with a lid. Lots of burn barrels.....no lid. Could you tell me what is the diameter of the top of the barrel/your birdbath? Any suggestions on where/what type of place to get a used barrel with lid? It looks great cuz the barrel seems like a good height, too, so you don't break your back bending down. I'm pretty excited to find your birdbath here. Thanks so much for making the effort to do a youtube. You've touched my heart.
Hi candy, I have been trying to get some myself but no one seems to make them anymore, anyway the top of the birdbath was 22 inches across. I would just use some plywood on the bottom, should workfine, thanks mike
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS! YOU JUST MADE ONE CANADIAN LADY EXTREMELY HAPPPPY! i knew it couldnt be that hard! and i have all the rocks i need tabooot! thanks for making this easy Mike and Uncle JOe! you guys heheheh ROCK!!!
Fantastic that your wonderful uncle Joe's love of creating these humble birdbaths, will be recreated by many in the future as a direct influence of you Mike, I love the story of the under age glass of wine and the hair cut, this must be a great personal memory and I thank you for sharing... Well done to Johnathon for his adventure in making a bit of pocket money also as a result of you.I have said it before to you and will say it again, I love you mate this world is a better place with people like you and your late uncle Joe in it!, Regards Ellery from the UK. PS I will have ago at making a bird bath and let you know how it goes.
Thanks Mike, this is cool and I like hearing about your uncle Joe! We didn't get to grow up near any extended family as we moved to US from England when very little. Im betting my hubby and I are going to make a rock birdbath. First we are going to make some hypertufa pots. I got the supplies today!! God bless.
Hi Mike from England, I hope that you are well. I made one of your uncle Jo style birdbaths last spring and it’s still going strong during the last few winter months of frost and snow. I wish I could of added a photograph for you to see it, but everyone’s impressed by my DIY. (I used 3 large metal L brackets that I cemented at the top of the base column, then I balanced the top of the bath on these. I did this so I didn’t have to drill) Keep safe and thank you for helping me, and giving me the confidence to make my lovely bird bath. Julie 😊
I so enjoyed watching this video! The current job I am on we just finished two pairs of driveway gate pillars in what you refer to as cobblestone but we refer to as river rock here on Vancouver Island, B.C. Canada. We just moved down to the the house to clad the first two and a half vertical feet in the same river rock around the exterior. Big, beautiful house on amazing property that an Uncle Joe birdbath or two would fit perfectly!
I had a beautiful bird bath in my front garden. I guess it was handmade more than 40 years ago. Someone just drove over it - she hit the accelerator instead of the brake. It was similar to yours although it had a top row of stones mostly pink around the circumference. I am sick about losing it. I have an artisan friend who is going to see if he can duplicate it. I know this will be a big help. Thank you!
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL, a birdbath like that would cost me at least $500+ here in Texas, I think I am going to try my attempt at making one like this, Idk if I wIll be successful but I am gonna try...if it turns out half as nice as yours I'll post pics! Thanks for inspiring me!
I just watched a video on how to make a stone birdbath. I was reading comments and two years ago you said you were going to make one. Just curious. Did you? Was it difficult? I may try. :)
We love this!! We have a few purchased birdbaths (and feeders) under large shade trees (zero mold issues this way!) in our North Texas, suburban bathyard, and the birds love (as do we) and appreciate it. However, a few of these would be fantastic for our country property!! Cannot wait to get started! :D Thankies ever so for sharing this detailed video, sir, and heartfelt appreciation for ingenious Uncle Joe!! May God bless you! ♡♡♡
Watched again and building my courage to try this beauty. Do you have a video on how to build a rectangle flower box from small stones onto the ground? Would like to learn. Thank you. You and Uncle Joe are true artists.
So inspiring! I am full of ideas. I hope you don not mind if I borrow yours. Only difference though, I am going to leave a plastic tube in the middle of the post, and run it into the bath. Then I'll insert a piece of copper tube , so the water kinda showers out the top. You are a master mason! I mixed mortar, etc. for a stone mason, right after high school- WHAT A Job! Your contribution is truly appreciated.
Great video, I sure will give it a shot,,, God knows that summer is kicking buts here in Costa Rica and I want the local birds to get a source of refreshment.. thanks !
Surprised you did not include reinforcing in the rock layers, must not be needed. I'm in Kansas and will use found stones maybe other stuff. Thank you for the video. I just ordered some solar water pumps for Bird baths to include. Mine will be shallower and I am thinking about using some found concrete slab cut outs from a demolition for the base, square cut slabs 3" thick @ 12-16" squares, stacked up.
beautifully done. Wish I could get one of them. but I can just imagine how spendy postage would be...lol...If weren't for my health issues I would so try this. keep up the beautiful work. take care.
Simply wonderful idea! Thank you and your Uncle Joe, can't wait to try and make one! Question, you mention Fiberglass, holding cement together longer. I am new to all of this...can you please explain what it is exactly, and how do I purchase and add to a cement mixture. I live in up north country where it freezes, will this perhaps help with any freeze/thaw expansion stuff that happens? Thanks for you reply in advance!
It is not something you have to do, I just happen to have it on hand and I buy it from the concrete company (who adds it sometimes to concrete truck mixes) and sometimes I use it on stucco, I would say it helps a little bit but I always cover the birdbaths in winter because the ice will bust them apart and then uncover them in the spring when freezing weather is gone, I hope it helps , thanks mike
I just love this i really wish that i lived close to you i would by a pair of those you are truly blessed with talent i try to do things to love your videos
Love how no BS and humble this guy is. Lots of info in short amount of time.
Thanks, mike
