Hey Rich, a lot of companies sell disc conversion kits for those axles for under $400 US. I think that'd be the best thing you could do to that truck. Also one work around would be to sand blast the drums inside and out and mount an axle to it reversed around so you could put it in a lathe and then run the lathe slowly with a MIG gun in a holder and use the lathe to weld on a new surface (you'd have to use heavy nickel wire) and once a new surface was added you could then machine it back to spec. At that point though, it'd be much easier to just do a disc brake conversion and call it good... but it is a work around. I'm good at finding parts and I wasn't able to find a single set of new drums anywhere.

That thing may not ride like a Caddy, but you can haul butt-loads of cargo with it! I have a friend in Louisiana that purchased an '85 crew cab new, he still owns it (but it hasn't seen the road in a very long time). Not a 4-wheel drive dually, but I'm hoping that one day he'll get it running again, along with all the other vintage Mopars in his collection.
Thanks for your hard work sir!

For the used parts you can't find, repurpose other parts. In my 12V jeep J20 conversion moved auto gear select shifter to roof with cable shift, and cable shift twin stick for NV241DHD to pass side roof. Used 69 camaro shifter for the low profile and desired handle. And it's pretty rad. Off road it's natural to reach up for maneuvering back and forth/grab handle.

Had someone come in with a second gen dually, complaint of noise maybe dieing transmission. Found the outside dually sheered all the out lugs on the spacer and the outside dually had been freewheeling on the road but didn't fly off.. hub was trashed. I got a first gen and on the dana 70 I realized that the stock front dana 60 spindle nut and jab nut are same size as the 70 so just ordered a set to replace that ridiculous tab, has been great for over 4 years now still tight.

  • @Josh-db8rf

My dad has a 79 f250 with the dana 60 and he replaced the brakes a few years ago and put new wheel bearings in but knowing old guys they dont like to read manuals and he ended up melting a bearing on the one side which actually locked the wheel from spinning while he was driving to a refinery here in Alberta. My dad never did maintenance on a dana 60 before he replaced the brakes and his logic was "oh if its snug it'll work". As I started to repair the axle i looked in this Haynes manual we had for the truck and found all the proper torque specs for both adjustment and the locking nuts and the axle flange torque itself which my dad didnt bother to copy. Feels pretty good when your 17 and do a better job then your dad at vehicle work.

Rode in my first and only Dodge with a diesel in 1991 I couldn't believe how loud it was made my 68 F-250 with a 390 and glass packs seem quite even with the windows down. Cured me of wanting a diesel pick up. it was even louder than my folks 80s cab over GMC had been

Guess you never drove a Tdi swapped rabbit pickup.
      Drives Smooth as a car.
Not too loud with a turbo.
A little vibrate-y at idle, but silk going down the road.
What IS worth it, is the fact that I spend more on insurance each month than fuel ($42/month).
And can drive from one coast to the other for less than $200 (including food)
And has a “bed” in the back for naps.
If you ever get down on your luck. This is what you want.
Oh, and the engine had 299k when I bought the whole car for a swap for $500.
But seeing as you drive a 390 ford, you’ve probably spent more on fuel than I have on all my cars, fuel, insurance, and maintenance.

    • @bigunone
      @bigunone 4 роки тому +1

@@fastinradfordable thank you for your comment: please do not worry yourself on what I may or may not pay in fuel and insurance costs. If you had bothered to read you would have seen that my observation was from 1991, while your TDI diesel may be fuel thrifty can it carry an 8 foot cab over and pull a 26 foot travel trailer from Florida to New mexico in 60 hrs? If not you are comparing apples to oranges.

I replaced the end of a bearing support on a rear differential that was damaged by the single locking nut that came loose . . The rear differential was cut off behind seal support and prepped to be welded . The replacement was prepped and welded in a jig that was bolted to the damaged rear differential and welded in the windows machined in the jig . 6010 root 7018 fill and cap . Did not have a tig unit to do the repair . My father machined the jig to hold the replacement on center of housing . So if some one has a damaged axle housing it can be repaired . I don't have any use for the single locking nut and piece of crap sheet metal lock

You can use a nut from a chevy or dodge aam axle with the key stock an retainer instead of those double nuts

W350 12x3 drums are available at my local supply house. Shows in stock 1 ea on hand and June 16th for another if ordered from warehouse. That's an oreillyauto store. I bought two last year for my 91 w350. Still can be had pretty easy as those old Dana 60 and 70 and 70u units were used heavily in fleet rigs for many years. If your parts man is telling you they can't get it, they may be blowing smoke, just saying. I will have the boys at the store put hands on it in the a.m. and check and shoot me a image to verify. Control arms for the 2wd trucks of this era became a problem a few years ago but since then a new supplier was found.

Another thing to consider is using a couple or four conical regular type lug nuts of the same thread pitch to drive the wheel into good alignment on the hub before using the reverse cone style lug nuts that go onto the wheel. This has been done on a couple of my first gens to great success in helping to control wheel shake. Also iirc those factory lugs should be at 425 ft lbs or so, and I realize that spacers are being used so that wouldnt apply, but kinda makes you think it those things can hold the load or not.

Now that I live in Georgia, I certainly don't miss needing a hammer to remove brake drums, (I'm originally from central Pennsylvania). In fact, I'd be perfectly happy if I never encountered another snowflake again.

Drums looks like they are available. I have current part numbers for several manufacturers for the 12"x3" shoe DRW.
    Wagner BD60328
    Centric 12367004WAGNER BD60328
    Durago BD8892
I think these ones will work also, but check first. They are listed for 12"x3" brakes but does not say SRW or DRW.
    Bendix PDR0264
    Raybestos 1961R
I have been putting together a parts list for reviving my 93' Cummins chassis cab, so I have the list sitting in front of me. Its been sitting many years, so its getting all new brakes. Want to do a "will it start" on a 12v? lol

In trucks that should have been but never were. I want a 96-99 Chevy 3500 Dually, Crew Cab Short Bed. Swap a Dana 60 up front, wheel/tire setup like the Dodge and either a hopped up 6.5 or a cummins swap with a 5/6spd behind it.

Icks nay on the spaces aye.
All the spaces I see are on the truck but the tires are rolling down the road by themselves.
If you want to meet the local tower then go ahead and use spacers.

If my health threatens to get better, I just got to do one. I'm only seventy three and mind is .... well that part shouldn't count. I hate those aluminum spacers but they are like eighty to a hundred apiece. The steel ones are three hundred a piece but they last forever.... Several of the wrecking yards around here have those old rear ends for some reason... its the front axle that is unobtainium. I can see why that truck was restored... not many here are two wheel

If the tires touch all around its "fine". Touching only at the bottoms where the tire bulges from ground contact is an issue.

????? The tires just plain shouldn't touch, period, if they touch you're going to blow a tire. Or maybe i misunderstood your comment🤷‍♂️
