Eeeee
The zoom test, is that just optical zoom or is it with digital zoom as well on the Sony Mark 7?

So glad that someone actually reviewed this for photography and not just as a video camera
You're welcome!
Believe it or not - there are still some left who care more about the visual art aspect of capturing memories than those who walk around with a running video camera to capture what ever comes along.
One thing that drives me crazy about almost all of these reviews is that no one ever talks about how close the camera can focus, or it's macro capability. This is especially important on a camera with a fixed lens, because you cannot change the lens to a macro lens. It's also a pretty easy thing to test.
Your reviews are the best - so detailed and reliable!
I've been watching you for almost 10 years now. Always the best reviews.
Thank you Gordon for sharing your experience & expertise. Its really appreciated & most helpful. Keep up the good work!
Fantastic review Gordon, and thanks for comparing to the relevant competition as well!
You're welcome! I have more comparisons to come including that vlog video I teased here...
Thank you very much for the comprehensive and insightful review, Gordon!
you're welcome!
The best and complete review of this camera so far.
Thankyou!
Thanks Gordon, as always giving comprehensive reviews.
Thanks!
Always good reviews you make Gordon 👍
Excellent review, Gordon. Thank you
You're welcome!
Thanks for the video. Audio jack is the biggest addition to this camera. It was needed!
Thanks, I agree!
Well done Gordon. This is an amazing little camera. You are the only big camera channel to compare this camera to the Canons or to even to mention them.
Thanks, I think it's important to do that.
I love the colours of the photo's made by the Canon camera's.
Concerning photographing moving subjects: I use a Olympus TG5 and the AF is really great (when there's enough light).
Gordon, this was a masterful review! Great work! ...and thank you!
Thanks, and you're very welcome!
Great review BUT please add labels for side by side comparisons!
Yes sorry, I ran out of patience editing this one, but I've done them for my latest Canon G5X vs G7X video...
No problem man, and congratulations for your channel 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Great review Gordon , very detailed keep up the good work !
Thanks!
Another very thorough review. Thanks Gordon.
Cheers!
the auto focus feature is the main selling point of this camera . i love it
Excellent review Gordon! Very thoroughly executed and extremely informative. Great work mate.
Thanks, you're very welcome!
@@cameralabs Hy! Did the g5x 2-s autofocus changed since the video, i like it more than sony, but that lets me back...
Liked your video, and thanks for your simplicity of showing us all these topics.
Glad you found it useful!
thanks for review. I only miss the macro at 200 mm what is the minimum distance and how close is the subject?
I am so glad you mentioned the part about the lessor touchscreen functionality. No one seems to mention that, but i really want it and they don’t ever offer it, while everyone else does.
Thanks, I always try and be as thorough as I can!
Thanx Gordon great review bro :) Awesome channel, loving it. Please keep em coming.
Will do, cheers!
Superb review! Thank you for all the great info.
You're welcome!
Great in depth coverage of this camera Gordon and it has served to convince me to invest in my first ever RX100 to carry when the A series is just not practical - thank you for your clear and concise coverage.
You're very welcome! If you're buying online, please consider going through my links here or at cameralabs.com thanks!

Much needed in-depth review of RX100 VII- full of information
Thanks!
Fantastic, Gordon! You've got yourself a new subscriber for that detailed and waffle-free review. I have just upgraded my G7Xii with the RX100vii, mostly because of the face detection AND the mic input. I was getting fed up with the Canon losing focus on my face when blogging. Can't wait to get stuck in and exploit the Sony's features. Many thanks, all the best.
Do you still use this Sony camera? What's your opinion after a few years of use?
Excellent video. Lots of valuable information and very well presented. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thank you for yet another great review
Thanks!
Nice review. I liked both the detail and positive honest caparisons.
Thanks! I'm posting a G5X II vs GX III video very soon!
Is the mark V actually better with 1.8 aperture and ND filter built in?
Thank you very much for the indoor sample photos and for thus reminding me of the difference to the DSLR + Sigma F1.8 that I'm used to. This completely killed my desire to buy any of these cameras.
You're welcome! Those portraits were at 3200-6400 ISO.
Hi, does the Android remote control app offer touch focus for stills and video for the mk vii, mk v and mk va??
best review. greatly done
Awesome video! Any difference in IQ when using Electronic Shutter vs Mechanical Shutter? I really like the no-black-out viewfinder and rear screen in use, so wondering if there's any negatives associated with the function?
Hiii this camera seems have all what I need.. But it overheats?
Is the stabilization on the longer lens better or worse than the shorter one on the rx100 v?
Excellent review. Thanks.
You are truly an angel! Thank you for this!
Thanks for the review! Gordon, is it possible to use back button focus with this little guy? set AF for the middle button on the back for example? Thanks!
Expert review style! So glad I found your channel! I'm snagging the SONY this week! :)
Thanks, glad you found me! PS - if you're ordering online, please consider going through my links here or at cameralabs.com thanks!
@@cameralabs Well, lucky for you, I DO plan on buying it at B&H! :)
@@michaelyolch79 great stuff, thanks!
Can you set the viewfinder to pop up when you turn the camera on with the button?
I love it you got me I am buying this camera today
Great video. Have you tested the interval shooting? Would love to see the time-lapse and night-lapse capabilities of this camera
Best eval of the stability and AF capabilities over the MK VI. Thank you - excellent as usual Gordon!
You;re welcome!
@Gordon Laing
First off, GR8 review!
Can you please do a follow-up video regarding the extraction of the images and videos via App for a smartphone? Is an App better than WiFi and NFC?
Thanks!
Thanks for your review, it was very useful.
You're welcome!
You reviewed the g7 m3 first, and then this. Your so much ahead in the ball game. Hehe. Thanks!
Thanks! I had to hold back my final G7X III / G5X II review because of this one! But I did get to test them all side by side which was great!
Nice video
This camera is ideal for light is right when I go into the hills or go up the local volcano for few night or two out. We have three one blew up and out the other is dormant (that’s the one you see in the lord of the rings) the other just simmers away and burps now and then
Gordon your reviews are brilliant enjoying your book thank you. Keep going back to it
Thanks for this review Bro Gordon Laing!
You're welcome!
Love this detailed review! Does it have a beauty filter by any chance?
Very helpful - thank you.
You're welcome! It's worth coming back again when UA-cam has rendered it fully!
From a long time Fuji user. This is my favourite digital camera. I still love my XT4 and use it for shoots and for leisure but on a day to day basis rx100m7 is coming out with me.
I've just returned from a 3 week trip with this camera alone!
Hi Gordon
excellent video, how good is the image quality with say a m43 camera
keep up the excellent videos
Awesome Review as always !!
Thanks!
Such a practical definite review and comparison with the similar cameras. I’m gonna get the Sony and keep my iPhone 13 mini, now instead of waiting for s24 ultra. Love the fact that you decided to use the beach for “testing” zoom. So practical.😅
Great review Gordon, very well explained. I love all your reviews for gadgets. I had Canon G7X Mark II and after comparing both Sony RX100 VII and Canon G7X Mark III, I am thinking to upgrade Canon G7X Mark III. Some blurry effect with built-in ND filter really helps me.
I will have a vlog comparison between them early next week, and a full G7X III review coming later!
Thank you Gordon.
Pany LX10 needs an update add mic input and better AF now but they need to keep the f1.4 lens - prefer the lower apertures over the zoom capability
I'd like to see that too.
Agree. Also they need to improve the autofocus and ditch the crop when filming. crops from 24 to 36mm in 4k and from 24mm to 30 in 1080p. Would like to still stay at 24mm at all times or possibly have a slightly wider lens to start with.
@@Johak1982 10mm to 50mm - f1.4 - mic jack - now that would create a different compact vlogging camera
Great review!!!!
Thanks!
what is the best camera for photographing art?
Thank you Gordon!
You're very welcome!
Best review of mk7, g7x and g5x on UA-cam
Thanks! I'll be posting my dedicated vlog comparison on Monday!
The colours of Sony RX100 VII have a green stich shown at 7:12.
Good review, with RX100 VII, is it possible to luck focus during video? I know the RX100 VI cannot, just wondering if the new model has this feature. Thanks
Only if you switch it to manual focus - not ideal.
Bloody thorough mate.
That's my aim!
nice review! Very useful
Thanks!
Thanks for this, Gordon! I cannot find the separate video you made comparing footage from this camera with footage from the Canon G7 X Mark III. Has it been uploaded?
I'm working on it! Probably for Monday.
Most APS-C mirrorless cameras are really small but premium compact ones have a future too.
Does it have a picture quality of a dslr?
What is really upsetting about this RX100VII release is the Canon-like handicapping and pricing, caused by Sony's complacence of progress and lack of competition in the market.
For $1200 prosumers can get an A6400 + 18-135 kit that is at least a stop faster and more versatile.
For $800 prosumers looking for pocketable option can get a brand new 2-year-old RX100V with a faster lens and internal ND, which matter more for serious vlogging and 95% of hybrid shooting, especially in low light.
For $400 casual vloggers can get DJI Osmo Pocket that can shoot 4K60p with a built-in gimbal.
For $100 anyone can just afford a DJI Mobile that can be used with any smartphone they already have.
Your the best! Got another sub!
Thanks!
Will u compare RX100VII VS RX10IV
Both zooms & around the same price.
The zoom test, is that just optical zoom or is it with digital zoom as well on the Sony Mark 7?
ua-cam.com/video/pFqrtnH1CZk/v-deo.html
Just optical
Thanks! @@cameralabs is it a special setting, I dont get that far with my Mark7?
@@Johnkult no, in fact you often have to DISABLE the digital or clear image zoom to stop it going too far and incurring losses.
Gordon fantastic video,I own a Sony A7m3 with 70-200 g lens but find this pocket camera very appealing
check out my recent travel light video...
Great review. Thank you. Does the "animal detect" includes birds and wildlife? I would like to record what I see at my farm. Thank you.
Yes, it's supposed to work with them too, and I hope to try it beyond dogs but haven;'t yet!
does it have a clean hdmi out ? power via usb plus clean hdmi = very good webcam option, very nice also for studio video work (direclty connect via camlink to pc and usb powered with direct storage on pc, good workflow)
yes I believe so
Best Camera reviewer out there!
Thanks Shawn!
Your review is great. Thank you. I have the RX100 VI. The diopter adjustment on the viewfinder moves as the viewfinder goes up and down. It drives me crazy. Is there a way to lock the diopter adjustment on the VII?
no it's the same mechanism
Gordon Laing Thank you for your reply. I won’t be buying the VII because of the moving diopter adjustment. I am disappointed Sony didn’t fix this.
Gordon some very good new video features can I ask has the LCD screen dimming in 4K been fixed, I just can't see the RX100m6 in sunlight, thanks!
I just tried it for you. You can have Sunny Weather enabled for the screen when composing, but as soon as you press record in 4k, it reverts to the normal dimmer screen setting. That's annoying as they fixed it on the larger models. Thanks for encouraging me to check that out.
@@cameralabs Thank you for checking, will keep the M6 and carry on using my A6400 in bright light for now until the next update.
Is it just me or is the greenish/yellowish tint of the Sony is back? The a6400 seems to have gotten rid of it, but in my eyes, most of the videos here lean towards green.
I agree the colour balance seems a little off or biased.
PS - it may be possible to correct the tint by applying a shift in the AWB settings.
Agreed
Very good. Thank you.
Really good review
Thanks!
After watching a bunch of Gordon's uniformly excellent reviews, I'm convinced he must be part owner of Tommy's Barber Shop :-)
I do all my own hairdos
Since the front is not completely flat due to the lens always taking up some room there, they would be better off to put a small rubber grip on the front that is just slightly a bit more recessed than the length the lens sticks out when fully retracted. The front is a little too slick for no good reason.
Interesting Sony with the body sizes layouts quite a few of the rx series and apsc Sony’s fit the same underwater housings definite advantage to keeping the same body re bags battery’s and used to ergonomics think Sony’s the only one if have previous model useful
We should thank sony for adding animal detect so we get to see all these lovely pets reviewers own ! Solid review again.
Thanks!
Great and very objective review. At that price would I be better off going to a camcorder? What do you think?
All 3 perfect for vlogging honestly get a tripod and rodeo mic you get the perfect setup
he is not riding the mic so a Rode (or Røde as it is named) would be better, a rodeo mic sounds a bit wild :D
well im off to pickup my Rx1000 Mark 7 which just came in today. Cant wait to test it out.
U seems nervous
BTW Gordon I bought your book on Amazon..all the best!
Thanks, much appreciated! Hope you like it!
Very good review as usual!
Sony pushes its strongholds even further while forgetting some basic features altogether. Af was already top of market and now even more (including a7r4) but menu and touch functionality is from middle age. Don’t understand why. Like a7r4, packed with top class features, unbelievably capable camera. But price... I bet Canon competition you just compared will sell more.
Hey would you recommend the RX100 VII or the A7 III for video recording? Thanks!
Both are great, it depends if you want a larger interchangeable lens camera, or a pocket one with a fixed lens.
If anyone knows if same dimensions button layout as rx v on although longer lens should fit those underwater housings if anyone knows this I know a lot of them can use the same housing
No, it's a little thicker than the Mark V. It's the same as the Mark VI.
Gordon Laing prob those two models can use same housing interesting apsc too can use same housing for different Sony apsc cameras think Sony’s unique in that
Can they add touch controls to the settings with an update?
They could, but they haven't so far on any of their touch-screen models, so I wouldn't hold your breath.
Hi Gordon, could you tell me if there is any way to see the all the images you've taken in burst mode when reviewing in playback mode.
As far as I know you can only see the last image which is really annoying.
They can be grouped into bursts I think, but you can enter a burst to view them all separately.
@@cameralabs Ok.Thanks for the information.
Thank you for the review. Is the RX100 M7 now weather sealed?
sadly not
Thank you for your video. if i want to chose a compact camera among Sony Rx100VII and Fuji film X100V. i am more interested in images rather than video . what is your opinion? which one has a best image quality? pls help me.
If you don't need video or a zoom, get the X100V.
