G7X III reminds me of going back to the days of the RX100 III when autofocus was bad. Although the Canon costs less, it's a bad use of money because you end up with something that is only partially working. Failing autofocus for a point and shoot makes the camera less useful and versatile. I've had cameras like that in the past, they end up feeling paper-weighty, they don't last and get sold off.
Please do a video on the perfect vlog set up for the Sony RX100 VII 🙏 This video helped me choose between the both, love how detailed you get with the comparisons. Thanks so much! 😀
i know this video is a couple of years old.. but, i was in the market just now trying to decide between these 2x cameras as they are both still available.. this review really helped me make up mind --so i pulled the trigger on a gently used Sony RX100M7.. appreciate your real world analysis.. great video!
It would be amazing if Sony could release a camera similar to the RX100 V but just with the external mic input and without the 4K recording capabilities. Personally I’m not really interested in shooting 4K, but having that external mic input would be amazing for me! I’m sure that would also bring the price down as well sigh :(
Agree with your assessment of the G7X III. I sent mine back. :-( I wonder why no one reviews the Photo capabilities of these point and shoot cameras. The main reason I bought the G7X was for the faster zoom lens as a point and shoot. Unfortunately, their CR3 raw files are not interpreted by Lightroom very well - too much noise. On top of the video problems, I couldn’t take it.
there's plenty of g7x iii reviews on the photo capabilities. most of them says the corner is soft at 24mm and also soft at 100-120mm tele. Most importantly tracking and autofocus is way below rx100 from last 3 years.
I’d love you to do an update comparison to the G7x iii after the firmware update. I just can’t get my head around spending $550 more for better autofocus and lose my built in ND filter and time lapse features. I updated my g7x iii a few days ago and am satisfactorily impressed with the autofocus. But curious still on a comparison. I expect the Sony wins of course but $550 worth?
Good review! Keeping it to the key relevant topics :D subscribed! My favorite part: you delivered the knock-out to the Canon already at 4:03, saving me time in my already crammed day! I could deal with the video drawbacks on the Canon and I would have loved Canon's ergonomics, I'm sure. But bad auto focus for vlogging - ehh, no thanks, I don't have time for re-takes and dicking around in post, trying to cut out focus fails.
Turn the heat setting to high. Watch a few other UA-cam videos they say the same thing. I mean really a half hour + for a 4K compact is solid performance.
The Sony is nice when it works. I’ve had RX100iii, Rx100iv, and RX100V. No, I got them not because I’m rich and bought a newer model when it came out. I got a newer model because the old one started having problems. Always the flash was the first to stop working because it’s thin and fragile power supply lines broke. Then the autofocus followed. I always set the image quality fairly high, about 10M for each photo on average. The result was excellent even when the images were blown up to fill a 65” TV. Now all the photos I take look good on the camera but grainy on a 17” notebook, looking more like 2M photos. I checked the property of these photos and they all still occupied an average of 10M space each. I really like the overall performance of RX100 series over Canon cameras although I always prefer the color of the Canon. Now I realize that I have to start to argue why I have to buy a new Sony in less than two years. I’m going to get a Canon this time and see if it lasts longer. BTW, check out Joe Rogan experience #1245.
Every video I see about the RX100m7 leaves me more impressed with it. I rarely shoot low light so the 1” sensor doesn’t bother me at all. The RX100m7 is going to be a nice dancing partner for my RX10m4.
A good video. I understand Canon has come out with at least two firmware updates which are supposed to give support for 24p and better auto focus. I'm curious if those updates made any difference.

Other than this Sony what other cameras stack up against the G7x mk3 ? I’m looking into vlogging and I already have an external mic I’m just wondering what I should be looking for.
So I am looking for a compact camera just mainly for photography.. Any recommandations on which one to get to mainly use for photo’s instead of making video’s/vlogs?
I have the rx100 and I’ll had so many issues with the camera the lens don’t come out it wouldn’t turn on, and the first time I got it fixed and it worked for while and now it’s giving me so many problems that I can’t do nothing. My experience has been so bad despite the quality of pictures and videos is so great I’m considering switching to the g7.

The limitation is heat. The camera stops recording when it senses that the internal temperature is too high. There is a setting to basically ignore this sensor and keep recording.
@TheEverydayDad Thanks a lot for the video, super useful and very detailed info. I felt very related because I want a very small compact camera to record a travel that I am doing, and for me my main camera is still my phone. So, what phone do you use? Do you think a good combo will be the Sony RX100 VII, GoPro 11, and my main phone? an S22
Thank you for this. I sold an RX100IV a couple of months ago to get something a tad better and came across the G7 XIII so it blew my mind when you said it probably has the same inners as the RX100iv. Saved me the hassle and disappointment.

@@juanpenajimenez7274 guess i never updated it to find out sadly, just blew $1300. Hope it solves the problem for you because quality wise they're still about the same. Its the autofocus that had me for the upgrade.
The background of the Canon doesn't look out of focus, it just looks blurred. That wider aperture isn't helping. Maybe it could for stills, but not video.
What's your thoughts on G7x iii vs older RX100's? I had the RX100 V and got very frustrated with the menus, having to buy apps for it, buying a grip... so fiddly! The Sony was so frustrating to use. Sold it for the G7X mk iii. After the firmware update, the G7X iii is so fun to use! Great audio, great controls, touch to pull focus etc. Super easy to manual focus and pause autofocus when needed. That said, the 1080 video quality is really disappointing. To get nice sharp video, I have to record in 4K neutral profile, sharpen in post, then render to 1080. Seriously considering going back to the RX100V for the beautiful 1080 video, but dreading the Sony interface. When rendered at 1080, the G7X iii video shot in 4K is SIGNIFICANTLY better. The 4K is very nice too - just didn't want to dedicate to a 4K workflow.
I have tried both cameras. Canon has good color science and jpeg straight out of camera looks pleasing, but the video is lacking details, whereas the sony video quality is oversampled and detailed. In my opinion, Sony wins because of more versatile zoom, viewfinder, better video quality and canon is very close, only if the video of canon was oversampled and had phase detect autofocus. Too bad we are not seeing any updates on these smaller camera bodies. Many are discontinued, but I am seeing a trend that people fed up with carrying heavy gear like me are more into these compacts 📷
I want to do blogging but idk which camera to get. Because if I get a Sony, I’m basically getting the quality of a dslr or even better (from canon) and the compact size for blogging (2 in 1) but the setup is a problem and the flip screen. But if I get a canon rebel t7i it’s bulkier and heavier to carry around if I’m going to blog but then if I get a canon PowerShot g7 Mark ii, i think the quality wouldn’t be as good as the rebel /dslr? I’ve been doing a lot of research on which camera to buy and I just can’t choose:(
I knew the outcome before I watched this. I still cheered for the underdog...Wait, new Canon cameras are underdogs?!? 😐 I have to admit to being impressed with footage I've seen from the Sony. If I weren't so determined to complicate my camera bag with extra lenses etc..... BTW, nice cameo in Faruk's video.👍
It’s amazing to me that Canon hasn’t upgraded the G7X yet with it’s terrible auto focus. Meanwhile Sony has come out with the ZV-1 & EV-10 in addition to the RX100. It seems like Canon gave up on the point & shoot cameras for vlogging.
The zoom just seems pathetic vs Sony HX range. Why don't they make HX-99 with audio in.. or heck I'd love one that popped up a pro stereo mic instead of a viewfinder so it's not limited to tiny holes in the body (even HX20V/HX30V from *2012* have better positioned mics with multiple holes (12 left + 12 right).. but nobody ever tests audio at loud levels on cameras, *sigh*)
I’ve never held a camera before, I want one which is balanced at photography and video I don’t mind the price tag. But I’m still not sure, can anyone help me?
could you please show us a side by side comparison of the rx100 m5 and the M7 for 1080 stabilization???? so on the fence on getting the M7 after not like the the M6 for video stabilzation vs the Hero7 Black.
That G7XIII actually looks terrible on multiple levels. The leaves in your outdoor vlogging test outside proves that. The Canon was crap compared to the M7. As a Canon shooter this is just disappointing. I also shoot Sony and Panasonic and Yes I think the price difference between the Sony and Canon is definitely worth it. But in my case to get the RX over the A6400 is another thing that I am just not sure of right now.
@@TheEverydayDad I travel a lot to Chicago to visit my daughter. This will definitely be my travel camera for stills and videos of her marathon events.
Reading the comments, it seems like I'm the only one, but I prefer the Canon. Nicer colours and highlight roll-off make the picture seem better to me. Of course the AF sucks :/
The only two ways the Canon is under consideration is the built-in ND (and on my RX100 VII I installed a stick on 52mm filter thread and use a variable ND) and price. A better camera to compete with the RX100 VII is the Panasonic LX100 II. Price is comparable and the Panny has a built-in filter thread and has some features that beat the Sony, especially far better macro, 4K Photo, and greater shallow depth of field. It’s two big cons are the fixed screen and lack of mic input. For general photography and video the Panasonic is the better choice, but for vlogging style shooting the Sony is the clear winner. The Canon wins in no categories, and even with AF the Canon falls behind the Panasonic. Even at half the price I wouldn’t consider that Canon. There are simply much better options available.
Gald I saw your review with the side by side comparison as was about to get the G7x3. Definately not getting the G7x3, but not paying for the RX100 V7. Back to the drawing board for me hahaha
literally went to a store to buy a G7x3....i tested it and really had a hard time to focus my skull ring.....i usually use it for camera test... i tried so hard......so sad for canon. :( my RX0II way more better than g7x3...the price though.
Thanks for the review. This is the first review of 6 or 7 I’ve seen that gives the Canon a poor rating on auto focus and image quality on video. Wonder how the rating had been for canon had you gotten to go to a canon conference. Hehehe.
Output from Sony looks so much better than Canon! If you do not spend on budget only, it is definitely worthy to pay the higher price. I have got my Sony RX-100 VI as a traveler camera and I actually sold my Fuji X-T3 because Sony can produce almost as good pictures in majority of cases as much bigger Fuji.
This is the ONLY comparison video, between these two cameras, that strongly persuades me which to buy and why. Good stuff!
Dang, Im looking at this video in Dec 2024 and the $749 price for the Canon is looking pretty good. Now its $1500...
I think the G7X is outta focus 90% of the time. Sad canon user here...

I can't believe that Canon footage is in 4K. It looks worse than some 1080P footage.
How can you tell after editing, UA-cam compression and playing on your low resolution device?
Because if I am comparing footages that are all compressed by UA-cam on my 4K monitor. I can definitely tell this Canon footage is softer.

What audio device do you use withe the RX100 VII? Thx
Wow G7X has a lot blurry background than the Rx100, now I know which one I want. Thanks for this video.
G7x iii also blurry due to slow autofocus and soft 4k video. ;)
@@EinzMY No ND filter on the Sony is a joke sorry.
You are awesome!! Thank you!!
Do you mix footage from Sony and Canon!
Back to the drawing board for me hahaha
if sony made a 10mp sensor, the BUYER would win and be happy, but sony specifically does 20mp EXTRAORDINARY!
literally went to a store to buy a G7x3....i tested it and really had a hard time to focus my skull ring.....i usually use it for camera test... i tried so hard......so sad for canon. :( my RX0II way more better than g7x3...the price though.
Actually laughed aloud at the Contra comment
Very informative.. thanks
