Hello, Nick! I recently acquired a Calathea musaica "Network" from an Etsy shop. I have been giving only distilled water and hoping for the best! Love your videos!
This is the only Calathea I have and we are getting along fine. I had to take a chance on this one because I couldn't resist those leaves. Thanks for the care tips!
I just picked one up from my local nursery it is about the size you have there I paid 37.00$ Canadian funds I'm pretty excited 😊 it's so unique and beautiful 😍
I am on many online waitlists for this! I hope I randomly run into it at nursery or big box store. I only have one calathea and it’s a small orbifolia which has also been pretty easygoing and gorgeous 🥰
Thank you!!! I so appreciate when you give the non plant name for us ppl who love plants but have no clue what the plant name is/how to pronounce etc. LOL
Hi Nick,i love my mosaika 🌿she was i think ten greater then yours, and her soil is wurmcasting, perlite and kokossoil, she loves full indirekt sun,and stands under a sued window, last week she becomes a white flower 🤗love your videos netti from germany, one in the week water and she loves spraying with water 😊🌞
Wow, the new name! I knew about the genus change but hadn’t heard the species name yet. That’s going to take a while to commit to memory. I don’t have one of these (yet!) but I learned with my C. makoyana that filtered water isn’t necessarily enough, depending on the filter. I have a Britta filter, like a lot of people, and it doesn’t remove fluoride (their website says they remove “trace amounts” of fluoride). So make sure to use the right kind of filter or go with distilled water or rainwater.
I murdered my rattlesnake and orbifolia calatheas a while ago. So sad because they are stunning. They both dried up so quickly and dramatically despite regular watering and misting. Just purchased the Musaica as I watched another video of yours where you said they're much easier to care for. Hope I can handle it!! Thanks for the tips, Nick :)
Its official: I can't keep a calathea alive 😅 since this is no longer classified as a calathea. I had mine on a Northern windowsill & it did not like the cold, edges turned yellow. So I moved it to my poorly lit bathroom & it seems to be doing well in there 😁 Pushed out 4 new leaves this season.
Also I wanted to say that I have always used tap water on my plants but seen a video about switching over to distilled water and/or rainwater so now I collect rainwater and my plants are thriving so much And I haven't had any with the Browning tips especially on my dragon scale and my other prayer plant👏😄
Got one for four years, and it is such an easy calathea, along with Lancifolia ! It's lush, forgiving, resistant to parasites (its "neighbour" White star died out of acarids, Zebrina got some but Network was clear), I love it ! Thanks for all these advice !
Cafouyette my new calathea musaica is getting bunches of new leaves and once they unfurled they are almost white neatest to the stem, is this normal or so I have it too little light, I know it is normal for them to come in much lighter like green but these are making me nervous because like I said closest to the stem is almost white
Hi @@yougrowgail ! I'm so sorry I can't answer : although I manage to keep my C. network alive, I'm no specialist. I never noticed any whiteness on my new leaves, but they are lighter in coulour for sure. Maybe give your plant a tad more light, and wait a bit ? Or you can ask where you bought your plant ? I hope it's going to be ok anyways ! You can tell me, I'd be glad.
I bought my prayer plant exactly like the one your holding and until I watched your video I didn't know about the spider mites wow but I've had mine only a few weeks I love to watch it grow but I'm also going to have to replant it soon
Picked one up today at Walmart for 16.98 along with two zz plants for half price, including nice clay planters and a little fern for 2, all on clearance!! It is soooo pretty in person, all the little squares!
Hi Nick, I love this plant so much! It is a very resilient Calathea plant. Your care tips are pretty much the same as how I look after it. You can check it out on one of my Calathea Plant Diary video, but only if you are interested. I just find this plant so easy to take care of and it’s one of my neglected plants as it doesn’t need much attention at all. Thank you for sharing your care tips. Also I didn’t realise there’s a proper name for this plant. Now I know, Thanks to you!! 🌿💚
In my experience, Ctenanthe and Maranta leuconeura are easy to grow. But I still give them distilled water or rainwater. Calathea musaica is a species I'll consider giving a go.
Hi, Nick! Here's another one of your senior retired teachers! LOL I love your expertise! Quick question. I wanted to buy a string of hearts (Ceropegia Woodii) from you. You mentioned in that prior video you had these for sale. (but, that's an old video!). I went to Etsy, No luck finding you there. Are you still selling those? I have one long long one. (they're quite pricey!) :( I want to propagate, but I don't see little bulbs as you mentioned in your video. If you still sell them let me know the website. Love yah! You handsome critter! :D God help me. Why is did these letters turn red! I'm not that computer savvy. Sorry! Loyda NYC
I purchased this today at my grocery store. Cost me about $15. It had some brown spots on it and one side of it is much taller than the other, but I have been wanting this plant for a long time, so I don't care. This is my 8th Calathea, I love all of them, and I don't find them to be difficult, except from my Sanderiana, which is a bit of a diva.
Musaica is the only calathea I've kept alive. Mine gets reasonably good indirect light and is on a kitchen bench near the sink/above my dishwasher so I think it might appreciate the lil bit extra warmth and humidity that comes with that.
Lowe’s and Home Depot now sell these guys for $17.95. They’re huge and come in a nice white pot. The tag says “propagation prohibited” PP0005 Calathea Network
I think maybe the network is a strong plant once established. I made the mistake of buying a young one via Etsy last year that had maybe 3 leaves on it. It has struggled EVERY day since it got to my house. Finally after a year it's putting out new leaves but only after a put a plastic bag over the top of it (even though i'm in humid Florida). And of COURSE that same week I was able to get a giant one from Walmart. Haha! :D Oh well. I guess now I have two. :p
I've just learned I had a Calathea Musaica! I rescued her about a year ago from being thrown away. I've cared for her over the winter and she did really well. I live in London, UK, and we have been having a gorgeous few days while on lockdown so I moved her and her other basement lounge window mates to catch some sun outside. I thought she was responding well when her leaves turned vibrant. But now they've gone pale and brown and papery. She got sunburn, clearly, among other things. She's desperate for a repot. I've ordered some supplies but no telling when they will arrive. Any advice on getting her to survive?? f
I have 1 small plant and 1 medium plant. I water my plants with spring water and haven't had any issues. I did keep them in my small greenhouse under light and the largest leaf faded out but did not die. I took them both out of the greenhouse and they are doing fine.
I wish I had more luck with calatheas. So gorgeous! 😍😍😍 You said this one is a bit easier to take care of? 🤔 Can you do a video on easy-going calatheas?
I think luck/location has a lot to do with it. I've heard ornatas (pink pinstripe) are difficult, but mine is a couple feet tall and I've divided it. It was in a four inch pot when I got it, and now it's in 2 six inch pots.. I kept it under an east window, so it had bright morning sun but no direct light. Only time it got crispy was if I forgot to water it, or one of the leaf tips grew large enough for the sunlight to hit it directly. Eventually, I had to move it as it outgrew the space, but I moved it too close to an air vent on accident. Loss half its leaves in protest, lol. I've moved it again and it's fine. Some things I've found that help: Pick a good spot in the house and see how it does. It's okay to move it around a little bit to find that "perfect" location, but once you've decided (or rather, it's decided) on the perfect home, leave it there. If you move it might protest (like mine did). It's a lot of trial and error at first, but once you get the hang of them they're so rewarding. I'm at 3 different calatheas now, and have several more on my wish list :) Also, if humidity is an issue, consider making a houseplant arrangement with a calathea in the center and some small ferns or rex begonias along the edges. If you get any pests, you're in for a tough time at that point, but the more expressive plants will remind you when they need watering, and all the plants together will help with each other's humidity requirements. It's also really pretty if you add some decorative rocks or fake moss here and there.
Would you say the care is alot like the Alocasia amazonica? I have one and from this video I feel they request pretty much the same care. Just ordered the calathea online, can't wait to get it!
my 3 Calatheas do not fall or open their leaves at night and morning. The leaves are the same position throughout the day and night. My small one do face the light , i notice but no dramatic movement too.
These are pretty hard to find in stores here in the Netherlands, and if so they are quite pricey. I was lucky to get my hands on a good cutting last summer and it was doing well up until some weeks ago when I overwatered it before leaving for two weeks. The roots are totally brown and I've put the last leaf with roots into a glass of water because I cannot bare to throw it out. I'll try again in the future with a new one because this has to be my all time favourite looking plant!
I have a prayer plant in a self watering pot, in a nicely lit spot in my kitchen. It's just put out some massive leaves, so it seems to be happy. And so am I.
I’m starting to play around with self-watering pots for these kinds of plants (as well as some ferns) and really liking the results so far. I don’t see plant tubers talking about this very much, but it seems like a good topic for exploration.
@@annetteprice Hi again. Also Doug Chamberlain at Vermont hoya s I think he's mentioned them and possibly Sma hydroponics may have mentioned them as well. I use some for my phaelanopsis orchids. Hope helpful. 👍😸🌱
Hi you didn’t mention what potting mix you use. Can you share more about that? I made sure mine is in a v well draining mix yet it still got too wet and once the leaves start to turn yellow it’s hard to rescue the rest!!
My calathea mosaica grew very good and keeps shooting new leaves but from a month ago it’s stoped shooting new leaves. I have 2 pots calathea mosaica both are stoped new growing. Any advice ?
LMAO i refuse to buy calathea because they are difficult for me to take care of and and picky they all died. So i went to plant shop and bought this plant. I didnt know it was a calathea too🙈 so i put it in a pot and googled it no info about this plant and now i found your video and it is a Calathea😂. So lets see how this works for me
What if my source of water is from the mountain? I live in the mountain and our only source of water is water spring in this mountain and nearby rivers.
I love your videos been watching your stuff for awhile I water my two plants once a week. Sometimes I may give it a 2nd. Can you take a look at my plant I uploaded a video. I'm going to do a new one so u can see a update. I'd be very appreciative 😸
I’m confused, I thought “network” was a patent of costa farms or no? I thought it was a variety of musiaca but I guess not? Costa farms sent me one, I messaged them a question and they let me pick a plant, it’s huge!
I was curious and found a page on their website about it. They call it Network Calathea 'PP0005', or Calathea Network for short. “Network calathea is a new, patented variety of C. musaica that features more strongly variegated leaves than the species and a fuller, bushier plant shape. It's exclusively available in North America from Costa Farms.” The intersection of patents and scientific nomenclature is a mystery to me, so not sure if it gets moved to the Goeppertia genus at some point? Then it becomes … Network Goeppertia PP0005? 🤷♀️ Here is the patent info, FWIW: patents.justia.com/patent/20090307811
Calathea networks for sale at my Lowe’s (from costa farms I think), all specially marketed on their own little stand! Haven’t bought one yet bc they all come in this kind of ugly cachepot, and I’m on the market for an individual plant.
Who would name a plant name "network " lmao. Calatheas are apparently so easy but gosh they're total divas esp the orbifolia a little to wet and the leaves wrinkle and ripple, and turn brown it's just a losing game lol
I got a calathea Dottie and she is sooo fussy. I need to be on top of her. She's like a whiny child and she has put me off from getting any other calathea that I find better looking than dottie
You can always purchase a betta fish and keep him in a 2-gallon bowl. You can just use the water from his fishbowl to water your calatheas. It has been working for me and no brown tips. 😊
Nick my girlfriend and I love you but please please please pronounce it the other way lmao. It’s like hearing someone call Obama O’BAMAA lmao. Keep up the content man!

@@DrunkenHomemaker My pleasure :) Best of luck with your plants :D I love all the green in your profile picture.
Would you say the care is alot like the Alocasia amazonica? I have one and from this video I feel they request pretty much the same care. Just ordered the calathea online, can't wait to get it!
Home Depot for $ 18.99 in a pretty pot also. thanks for sharing 👍
This is such a vigorous grower like I have to repot it twice in one growing season 😂
Howan Cheng, may I ask you if you noticed an odd smell coming from the plant when it grows new leaves?
my 3 Calatheas do not fall or open their leaves at night and morning. The leaves are the same position throughout the day and night. My small one do face the light , i notice but no dramatic movement too.
Super, and what soil mixture?
These are pretty hard to find in stores here in the Netherlands, and if so they are quite pricey. I was lucky to get my hands on a good cutting last summer and it was doing well up until some weeks ago when I overwatered it before leaving for two weeks. The roots are totally brown and I've put the last leaf with roots into a glass of water because I cannot bare to throw it out. I'll try again in the future with a new one because this has to be my all time favourite looking plant!
Really? I got a small one ina neighbouring village. No problem. It is doing amazing and it was only like 3 or 4 euro.
BandDisplayed omg i am very jealous then!😂💚
You can find them at every praxis, tuinland etc. I bought mine for 9 euro.
@@annetteprice Hi utuber orchid girl has made a couple of videos about self watering pots. Might be helpful to you !! 👍🌱
@@theresafleetwood4962 Oh, thank you! I do sub her, but never saw those. I’ll have to take a look.
@@annetteprice Hi again. Also Doug Chamberlain at Vermont hoya s I think he's mentioned them and possibly Sma hydroponics may have mentioned them as well. I use some for my phaelanopsis orchids. Hope helpful. 👍😸🌱
@@theresafleetwood4962 I follow Doug too, so I’ll make sure to take a look. SMA is new to me, thanks for the rec! 😺👍
Hi you didn’t mention what potting mix you use. Can you share more about that? I made sure mine is in a v well draining mix yet it still got too wet and once the leaves start to turn yellow it’s hard to rescue the rest!!
On my wish list! :)
My Home Depot had about 15 of them yesterday!!😀
Which state? I’m hoping I can find them at Lowe’s or Home Depot in WA
Could you do an episode on easy vs hard calathea?
On my wishlist 😁
its hard to find here in KUWAIT but i had one before and it died ..now its on my wish list
How do I get bigger leaves on mine. The new sprouts on mine are smaller compared to the larged one. It is placed in a bright filtered yard.
My calathea mosaica grew very good and keeps shooting new leaves but from a month ago it’s stoped shooting new leaves.
I have 2 pots calathea mosaica both are stoped new growing.
Any advice ?
Rain water would probably be best. They are available on ebay and Walmart.com
It's about $4-5 (RM20+) in Malaysia
Hello, what calathea do you think goes better in lower light?
How do you keep the leaves shiny? Mine went dull as they aged
💚👍
LMAO i refuse to buy calathea because they are difficult for me to take care of and and picky they all died. So i went to plant shop and bought this plant. I didnt know it was a calathea too🙈 so i put it in a pot and googled it no info about this plant and now i found your video and it is a Calathea😂. So lets see how this works for me
What if my source of water is from the mountain? I live in the mountain and our only source of water is water spring in this mountain and nearby rivers.
Actually found one at Walmart for $15 in a 6in pot
Isnt it like mosaica, like a mosaic artwork?
Is the musaica meant to pray? Cause mine doesn’t
I love your videos been watching your stuff for awhile I water my two plants once a week. Sometimes I may give it a 2nd. Can you take a look at my plant I uploaded a video. I'm going to do a new one so u can see a update. I'd be very appreciative 😸
Got one for $5 today!
Mine started to yellow and I’m not sure what to do 😫😭
Thank you for info always ❤️
Have you ever regretted buying a houseplant?
but
of course!
Calathea networks for sale at my Lowe’s (from costa farms I think), all specially marketed on their own little stand! Haven’t bought one yet bc they all come in this kind of ugly cachepot, and I’m on the market for an individual plant.
👍🏻❤️🙏
Who would name a plant name "network " lmao. Calatheas are apparently so easy but gosh they're total divas esp the orbifolia a little to wet and the leaves wrinkle and ripple, and turn brown it's just a losing game lol
filtered water means... brita filtered or RO system filtered. The investments between these two type are quite different. LOL
Don't spray/mist it it doesn't like it... I found that out pretty quick
It grows like weed! Like 15 new leafs, at the same time..
20 dollars at home depot for a large one they looked really good but probably wont for long
Which state? I live in WA and will be looking for them!
chromatography im in maryland but i have seen them confirmed in pretty much every state on the east coast
Temptation!!! Temptation!!! Temptation!!!
I buy a huge one for $16 at Costco
Nick my girlfriend and I love you but please please please pronounce it the other way lmao. It’s like hearing someone call Obama O’BAMAA lmao. Keep up the content man!

I HATE THESE PLANTS and always avoid them when buying plants lol i feel like just by looking at them, they will make every effort they can to wilt and die
