I have a couple of HUGE ZZ plants in my home - have had them for years. I water them every week, and kind of a lot of water - like half a pitcher. Never had any problems with mushiness or over watering. They get medium light. Just wanted to add my own experience. They are totally fool-proof, grow fast, gorgeous.
LOVE my Aglaonemas. I keep them in the darkest areas of my condo, furthest away from any windows. I equally only water about every 3 weeks or so and they continue to thrive and push new growth. I've had surprisingly good look with my Maranta Leuconeura/prayer plant but continue to fail with Calatheas. I have a Calathea Undulata and Calathea Zebrina. I thought the Undulata would be easier since the leaves are a different texture but It's proving to be equally challenging. :-/ I'm looking for a Stromanthes or Ctenanthes to try. The Norfolk Pine is another easy low light pant that I wish got more love and recognition by other plant enthusiasts. I've found it to be such a great easy going plant.. :-) ALSO, Thank you for being so specific about your watering schedule and watering technique. I find that others who provide online videos about plant care consider once a week 'rarely' watering their plant and almost always recommend full saturation which does not work if your climate is more humid or if your plants are not receiving enough light. Especially if they're not in the correct soil mixture or pot with drainage holes.
I have a Chinese Evergreen that I got about 5 years ago before I was really into plants and it has survived so much lol. It currently has its first ever flowers which is so awesome!!! Thanks for another good video 🙂
I like your choices. I held off for a very long time to get a ZZ plant but then realized the Raven would work really well in my bathroom which is gray, white, and black. There's one good-sized window so that light should be just right. I can't appreciate dracaenas or give them the praise they are due because they remind me of working in the office for 35 years and I just want to forget that :) I'm certain the peace lilies in the office survived on a diet of coffee.
Peace lilies are not as low light as they’re rumored to be. In my experience they need a lot of indirect bright light, for many hours a day, regular fertilizing, and need to dry out until they start to hint at drooping before soaking them with filtered water.
I agree with the light however I do not let my peacefully droop I keep the soil sightly moist just not soaking wet... They say that it makes the plant weaker and shortens the life span when it droops
I agree when I saw it as one of his plants i had to disagree too. Just brought two of them and I’ve learned already they need a good amount of indirect sun
I've grown a couple of Peace Lilies, & they've been one of the easiest plants for me. I would say to put them right next to a window (or glass door) with bright indirect light. Make sure it has good drainage, and just water it when the soil is dry, or if the leaves start to droop. It will perk up again within a few hours. However, if you have been watering it and the leaves droop, it probably has had too much water and you should let it dry out.
We have this Spathiphyllum at work (school library). We forgot to put it away from direct light before summer vacations (2 months in my country), so it looked totally dead when we went back (all other plants were living there best lives, they are in plastic pots with built-in water reserve). So we gently plucked all the dead leaves that would not resist when we would touch it, give it a good splash and put it in a less sunny area. Oh boy did it revived, we even got 3 splendid flowers a few months later. And it survived the 2 months lockdown without watering it before like it never happened.
I've had great success growing my Sansevieria trifasciata in my office with no windows and an office with a window 100ft away. I've had it a year and it's miraculously grown a pretty decent amount.
Pothos or snakeplants aren't really low light, perhaps I would say it's in between the two. My pothos lost her beautiful color after I put her 2 meters from the window, after I put it 1 meter closer, the beautiful color return. Similar things goes on to my snakeplant and fern -- growth of new leaves stopped or even died off when I put them 1 meter from the window, actually they have to sit pretty near the window to ensure proper growth!
I bought a peace lily which I kept in my office with no windows (just typical fluorescent lighting) and it did pretty well. It stopped flowering but it did keep growing. I had it for about 8 months in that space and it was fine. I watered it once a week and never had an issue. I eventually gave it to my sister and the plant is now deceased. I recently bought another peace lily and gave it to my mom last week since her apartment is pretty low-light. Hopefully, this one fares better.
Love this video! Recently sold my house and moved into an apartment which I love, but had to give away lots of plants. I don't have the light that I did in the house, but still sufficent for most plants and your video is very helpful. Love the statement about watering the ZZ when you pay rent and that is great adivice. That you Nick.
Hi Nick, love your videos and all of your beautiful plants!! Can you do a video on grow lights? I need to get some soon and need some suggestions! Thanks for your very informative videos!
I have had my Domino Peace lily for over two years now. She is big. Her leaves are very varigated with sectoral patches of white. It has give me no problems whatsoever. I do keep her in medium light and treat the water with aquarium water conditioner. I currently have 132 plants in my collection and she is in my top five favorites.
I've watched quite a few videos on low light plants. None these days seem to mention Aspidistras. We've had an Aspidistra for 43 years. It's lived in different light conditions in 3 different places. At present it's in a low light room about 15ft from a window and it's fine. Occasionally it will decide that a few leaves will die but the plant itself doesn't die. It always comes back. At present it has no dead leaves. Only water when the soil is dry and don't leave it sitting in water. It likes humidity so you can sponge or mist the leaves occasionally but it will survive without that. I've hardly ever done it. I do wipe the leaves occasionally to clear any dust off.
Cool, I didn't know Chinese Evergreen plants are ok in low light, thanks for the info, I might get one then Lol. Your right about the Peace lily, a lot of people says it's an easy plant but not everyone can grow it.
I have found peace lilies to need more light and less water than stated in care guidelines. They also need fertilizer right after they finish flowering - if they get enough light, they will flower again.
I grow my peace lily in plain water. Nothing fancy, no hydroponic hee-haw, just 'soft' tap water with a bit of Baby Bio plant food added with each watering. It's huge now, and really healthy, flowers often, etc. It's in a bright room, but on the wall that doesn't get direct sunlight. I've had it for about 6 years, and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. I also grow my goosefoot plant in water, with a great deal of success. It doesn't climb, but gets bushy. I keep it next to the peace lily, as they seem to like the same conditions.
Glad this I came across this video. Just got a red emerald a couple of weeks ago and I didn't think she liked me. Now, I think I've been watering her tooo heavy. THANK YOU!!!!!
I have/had 2 aglaonemas: a pink one and the silver bay. The pink one just died of root rot after being perfectly happy for a year. Now, a few weeks later, the silver bay began drooping and after checking the roots... yes, root rot again. That plant has been abused, neglected for over a year and was growing like mad w/ new leaves constantly appearing. Now, it's in the plant hospital and I'm hoping I can save it. I always let them really dry out, but I guess when I do water I gave them too much :-)
A few months ago I walked into my favorite plant nursery here in Arizona looking for a variegated Rubber Tree. They didn’t have any in but they did have Domino Peace Lily. I came home with a gorgeous DPL and I just love her!
I have ZZ zenzi that I ordered online and it's HUUUGE :D I was expecting a smaller plant but its bigger than my any other ZZs. ZZs are definitely underappreciated plants, honestly they can handle anything and look gorgeous, what more could you ask?
Do you mean "huge" as in tall ? Are you sure the vendor delivered you a zenzi? For example on the PistiIs Nursery's web site, a customer posted a picture of her zenzi that she had ordered from the store; It looked exactly like her normal zenzi that she displayed next to it! Nope, she definitely did not get a zenzi. I have a zenzi, and it looks like a dwarf plant.
Good picks Nick, I have the ZZ plant sitting about 6 to 7 feet away from my two windows and it seems to be happy there, I would love to find a black ZZplant to put next to it, but for now it's on my wish list. I would also like to get both of those Calathias, I have the Medallion Calathia and find it is more fussy than my Rattlesnake and Triostar. I haven't had the pleasure of buying a Dracena yet, I'm still on the lookout for the perfect one, I love the structure of these and how they put them in the pots. I do have two peace lily's one being the common green one and the other is the Domino variegated, this one is one of my oldest plants it started out just tiny in a 4 inch pot some 15 or so years ago and is 5 times at least bigger and is also one of my favorite plants, I actually had a small one growing to the side that I popped into a pot for my daughter and she just loves it. And of course I have 5 different varieties of Aglaonema, four of the colorful ones and the Silver Bay which I really love. Thank you Nick for sharing this video,at least after watching this video I know that where I have these plants in my own home I got it right.
Hi. Im a newbie plant dad here. I have peace lily, sensation plant, zz, and chinese ever green. Im considering the fish bone plant. Thats so cute! Im from Manila btw. Have a good one! 😊🌱
My ZZ plant after 4 years in the darkest corner looked pretty sad. It’s leggy and the leaves became very light in color. Leaves became thin like paper, not succulent as before. It is still alive, but I’m not sure for how much longer if I continued putting it in that corner. So just wanted to put it out there that it would still need some rotation to keep it alive. I’ve placed mine in a brighter room now and hopefully it will recover well.
ZZ is seriously the best starter plant for anyone & seriously I water mine maybe once a month at the most twice a month. I have mine off to the side of a kitchen window & it’s been there over a year! I just ordered the smaller version & I’ll get the raven when I come across it one day. Nick you should do a video on the TDS of your water. I use distilled on some plants in the house & my sarracenia & pinguicula due to the TDS here in California
I have my Zamioculcas zamiifolia in my windowsless toilet, without light most of the day. It thrives!! I have had it for one year now and it´s growing even! :)
I have all of the ones you've suggested! Or I have a couple of different varieties that you've mentioned. Good to know that I've got them in the right places in my home. Thanks for the informational video!
I’ve heard the saying, “the larger the leaf, the lower the light the plant can handle” meaning, the larger leaf size can absorb more of what little light there is rather than a small leafed plant. Do you think that’s true in general? I always have trouble with winter light in my house (living in Canada) being shorter days and far less intense than the other seasons. Finding plants that can take Canadian winter low light is a challenge but I press on! Thanks for all the advice! Love the first and last suggestions especially! 😀
I need more videos on nontoxic plants. I currently have no plants in my house because my 2 cats will eat them. A nice video on houseplants safe for cats and dogs would be great. At least I have started a food forest in my backyard that is starting to produce. Are there any fruiting plants that can be grown indoors that are safe around my cats?
My fave has been my money tree. I saved it, bought it when it was rejected at the store, a 4 inch pot, dead leaves, almost dying, but it was calling me, I was like why will I buy it if I kill plants?. But I felt so bad for him, it was even on sale $1.99 so I just took my chances, yes they do need light by the window it does fine, been with me 2 years it is 2ft tall. After him, I guess all the love and care now I do great with plants, and since I pass the year and 2, now I feel comfortable buying more, all my plants I have now been with me after I bought the money tree, but they all require light, I AM looking for plants for living room now. Low light and will buy all the ones you listed.
Hi nick! Loved the video, and I was wondering if you could do a video on repotting. I have 2 plants that are root bound but I don’t know if I should reppot them right before fall/winter(one of them being a ZZ).
I love peace lilies, I have tonnes of them.. they are very easy to grow. The little ones are in flower because they're forced to flower with hormones so people will buy them from shops. They wont naturally flower until they are old enough. They love low light, will go to medium light as well. Just not direct. They only need watering when their leaves start to droop.
Thanks for this. I have very few windows in my house and need to supplement lighting with plant lights. This isn't always possible, therefore, some areas of the house - with some ambient light from windows - are sadly bereft of greenery. But based on your video, I will definitely look to purchase at least one or two you recommended. Peace.
Loved your video. I learned so much. I had no clue about the fluoride. This is the first time I’ve heard of it. I always wondered why some of my plants got that annoying burnt tip. Thanks so much! Your house must have the cleanest air!
Just made a online purchase of all the plants in this video except the zz ( because I already own one). Thanks for the recommendation and all your videos.
Thank God, another person who struggles with Peace Lily's! I have had a few and exactly like you said: they quickly pooped out on me! All information I look up says that they are so easy, I don't know what's going wrong... I give them the recommended everything.
I have three peace lily plants. I water every six weeks or when the the leaves droop. Try bottom watering. That is place plant with pot in a basin of water for 5 or 10 minutes until soil is soaked.
My agleonema actually flowered this past summer o have the green variety and when I saw it coming in I watching it everyday for a month to see what was going to happen best this to ever happen!!
These are all beautiful plants...I am surprised you did not include aspidistra, or Cast Iron plant...I love those and they do very well in low light and do not like direct sun at all...so many varieties of those too. Great video : )
Yo👑 !!! thank you and I love rescuing them also and getting them when they're babies I love 💚 your light and energy is like you are "phenomenally personified " lmol
I have the ZZ raven and when I put them out during the summer months, indirect light, they grow like crazy. I have the solid peace lily and had to separate the new growth cause they got so thick. And the last one Chinese evergreen and the Chinese evergreen pink, they takes little water w/low light or by the window and they grow so beautifully.
Love watching your videos. You're so thorough and I always learn so much! I remember you mentioning having an excel spreadsheet to track your watering habits. I'd love to see how you set that up 😊 I have a spreadsheet too but I dont love my formatting
Awww I finally got my very own Ctenanthe Burle Marxii. Been wanting it since the first time I saw it at a botanical garden a couple years ago. The prayer plant is slowly growing.

I admire and respect you because it's obvious that you love plants.
What about watering of this zz plant is it weekly or biweekly ??
I learned a lot with this vedio about. House plants and your plants are so beautiful and pretty watching from California stay safe
Great video and picks as always, can you talk about your grow lights and how to know where to place them so the plants actually detect the light.
I have all of the ones you've suggested! Or I have a couple of different varieties that you've mentioned. Good to know that I've got them in the right places in my home. Thanks for the informational video!
Saw my first Raven ZZ in the store the other day, never seen one before, and I just had to get it. It's amazing.
But I felt so bad for him, it was even on sale $1.99
so I just took my chances, yes they do need light by the window it does fine, been with me 2 years it is 2ft tall.
After him, I guess all the love and care now I do great with plants, and since I pass the year and 2, now I feel comfortable buying more, all my plants I have now been with me after I bought the money tree, but they all require light, I AM looking for plants for living room now. Low light and will buy all the ones you listed.
Excellent video, I pray you and the grands are well and Happy
You, my dear are a gem for this. Thank you!
Thank you!! I always get great information from your videos!
Love the information. I got the Chinese evergreen and it's a beautiful plant. I am so glad I got it.
Just made a online purchase of all the plants in this video except the zz ( because I already own one). Thanks for the recommendation and all your videos.
What kind of grow lights do you use? You’re plants are beautiful!
Yes! Hi, Nick! I was going to ask the same thing.
Same!
GE Grow light at Target
Thanks for all the information! I now will be trolling the stores for one of the low light plants you have mentioned.😁👍
I would love a video based on window directions and what plants like which windows. As I mainly have large north windows!
Found this video very helpful. Especially about the ZZ plant...beautiful plant, easy to grow.
I would include Maranta leuconeura on this list. Those things love the shade and are very hard to kill.
Thank God, another person who struggles with Peace Lily's! I have had a few and exactly like you said: they quickly pooped out on me! All information I look up says that they are so easy, I don't know what's going wrong... I give them the recommended everything.
Air circulation is must.
I have three peace lily plants. I water every six weeks or when the the leaves droop. Try bottom watering. That is place plant with pot in a basin of water for 5 or 10 minutes until soil is soaked.
I've been loving the colorful aglaonema lately. My latest is the chocolate.
My agleonema actually flowered this past summer o have the green variety and when I saw it coming in I watching it everyday for a month to see what was going to happen best this to ever happen!!
Omg everyone has a Monsteria. I just got one. I think it gives good energy. I just got it as well as a zizi and snake.
I have all three of those too ! I just got the monsteria gifted to me by someone who couldn’t take care of it
Monsteria was the first plant I bought. The holes in the leafs caught my attention.
Thanks, you are really fun to listen to!
These are all beautiful plants...I am surprised you did not include aspidistra, or Cast Iron plant...I love those and they do very well in low light and do not like direct sun at all...so many varieties of those too. Great video : )
Peace lilies are super easy...they just love a water well and will grow in any light level.
Nice video.
Oh man i love ur green plants collections
Yo👑 !!! thank you and I love rescuing them also and getting them when they're babies
I love 💚 your light and energy is like you are "phenomenally personified " lmol
Super selection of low light plant!🌿🌱🍃
Super advice. Ty for showing us other plants than pothos!
Terrific video👍👍👍my European 120 year old house says "thank you"😁
I have the ZZ raven and when I put them out during the summer months, indirect light, they grow like crazy.
Your videos are always so helpful. Thanks for sharing
Interesting! My ZZ Raven almost died in low light, but now grows in bright, indirect light
I have a zz plant it’s amazing I water every now and then and I give it a little light like once I awhile. I’m getting new leaves!
Awww I finally got my very own Ctenanthe Burle Marxii. Been wanting it since the first time I saw it at a botanical garden a couple years ago. The prayer plant is slowly growing.
thank you for sharing your fabulous collection!
