Having owned one for a couple months now, I've discovered the best way to downshift 2 or 3 gears as fast as possible. If you double click the paddle, it's very slow, but if you just hold the paddle down, it'll take you to the lowest gear available pretty quickly. Also stoked, my vivid tune just arrived today, installing it tomorrow.
@greyz33tracknissanfan73 I love it, definitely feels much quicker than stock. I feel like you really notice it from 4k to 6k RPMs. Really puts you in the back of your seat.
Another fantastic "one take" Matt, well done mate. You're getting more and more casual in front of the camera which is great, feels like I'm just having a chat with you while driving.
A little suggestion Matt: Perhaps when you're doing a walkaround of the car in the beginning of the video, do a small clip of the exhaust? Like the 930 Turbo you did a number of months ago? I don't mean this in a bad way, not at all, but I wish we, the viewers, could get a listen on the exhaust of the cars you do One Take reviews on. Yes, we can hear it while you drive, but a standing rev with the microphone aimed at the exhaust is best. Either way, it's all up to you Matt whether or not you want to do that. Just giving a friendly, little suggestion. The farty, diarrhea noise the exhaust makes when shifting is absolutely glorious by the way!
I do appreciate the respect you give to cyclists. There's far too many tough guys that act as if they own the road and try to get as close to the cyclist as possible. Most of them drive trucks it seems. I never in a million years thought I'd ever be on a road bike but I started last year to get in better shape and lose some weight and it's much scarier riding a bike than any fast car or motorcycle I ever been in due to the fact you have no control over who is coming up behind you and no power to get away like I can on my motorcycle.
Canniballistix True but then again I've never seen him on a purpose built drift circuit either. Not saying he can do transitions but I would imagine he could if he wanted to (Just my opinion though).
+paNic RELL yeah he need another man to shoot from another car it will give us a view of the car when driving. i was wondering the whole video how does this car looks like from the outside while driving it
+TheSmokingTire That's unfortunate, maybe on the next subscriber submitted one take you can just ask the owner to do as fly by as they leave or something like that. I'm sure they wouldn't mind more camera time with their car.
This is an amazing performance car ( "Baby AMG" ) on the used car market. I have a question. Pretty much all the reviews online have been universally positive, however one British UA-camr thought that he wasn't able to downshift before a corner the way he wanted to. That doesn't really make sense - since this a twin-clutch transmission. Maybe he was running into the car's Rev-Limiter to not send the engine through the roof in revs. What are your thoughts ?
+Steven “The fanboys slayer” Ferguson Yeah, we were only really talking about Mercs and Beamers because of their rivalry. Out of the two the BMWs have tended to look more aggressive throughout the years, Mercedes always (and still do) look like a politicians car and with the M series cars throughout the years I would say yes BMW are built to be more aggressive looking than the Mercs. Nobody is talking what other brands are more aggressive looking, its based purely on the long history of these two companies that are constantly compared.
I like it. I have always wanted to get into German cars, this seems like a good entry. And since Mercs depreciate so quickly, I imagine these things won't be too bad after a few years.
Great review and video. Love the sound of this AMG. Been thinking about buying one of these or an Audi S3 saloon. Thanks for taking us on your excellent drive down the mountain
I've had mine for a little over a year and I love it every time I drive it. Everything stock except for the Revozport carbon lip spoiler and Rotiform rims
Matt - Great Videos. Only thing I would suggest when doing these reviews is to maybe talk a bit about the competitors to the car being driven and how they stack up against each other. Just something fun to bring up in between stats and details about the car.
I was looking for a review on the CLA 45 and when I searched I found a ton of them. For the most part is just people bloviating about the car but then I saw Matt and Doug did reviews and I knew I would get an honest opinion. But you did leave your coffee outside Matt.
I have my Vivid Racing tune kit on the way, just installed a cold air intake and I ordered my CLA45 from the Factory with the AMG high performance exhaust it will help get maximum gains from the tune. Looking to improve on my stock time of 12.6@111mph at the drag strip this year...
Matt, did something change recently with the video or image settings during recording? It kind of looks hyper real, like a video game almost. I've noticed this on a few of your recent videos.
I drove this the other day and I find the Evo a lot more adjustable in terms of handling. The gearbox did the same thing and refused to downshift just like this.
I understand that this car is predominantly front wheel drive, but via an ecu remap can the power distribution be changed I.e more to the rear? Or is it a mechanical set up which can't be tinkered with .. Thx!
Surface area = cooling. Saw-shaped rotors will increase surface area around the circumference, but will decrease the frontal & rear surface area. So depending on the geometry, the saw-rotors could definitely improve cooling. As well, it could have a similar effect to slotted rotors, improving initial grip and performance
The sound at each shift is just weird. Is there a marked shoving or slinging feeling as the next upshift locks in? Who do you feel makes the best dual clutch type gearbox? I'm still adjusting to a Merc, with a 4 banger and turbo, that goes like an EVO..
best and fastest double clutch is no doubt Porsches PDK, is the fastest shifting double clutch gearbox. you can even do paddle neutral declutching, if you hold down both left and right paddles at the same time its like clutching in a manual. so you can do everything you'd do in normal manual, reving without putting it in N, burnouts, perfect drifts..ect, so its no different than a manual, same perks with ease of use and quick shifting. Porsche makes the best double clutch AND manual gearboxes. if you get a Porsche manual, not only do they have great throw and feel smoother than other manual boxes, but you can also press the 'sport plus' button and it engages an auto blip feature so you basically only clutch in and down shift without revmatching and it blips the throttle for you for perfect rematches. so yeah when it comes to transmissions, nothing beats Porsche.
+MC1796 Sector 111, which has this awesome thing called the DRAKAN I just tested for /TUNED, as well as sells the BAC Mono and Ariel Atom here in LA, offers some upgrades for the 4C and are working on more. 4C's are a lot like Lotus Elise's in how they behave, so Sector 111 has a lot of experience fine tuning the best Lotus's, including the one we did on a one take not long ago.
I'm liking the support for the manual box in the other comments. This would be the perfect car if it had a manual. Top and interior and exterior. I don't give a toss about setting fast times on the track. I just want to enjoy changing gear when I choose to.
The DCT box in the 2014-15' CLA45's was terrible. It has been resolved for 16-17's. As has a nice chunk more power. But, it is after all, a CLA. A basement, bargain rental level Benz, AMG or not, built in Hungary, very poor build quality. And Mercedes dealers are so errogant, unwilling to assist you on these "cheap", technically still, Chrysler products.
Dunlop tyres mine came standard with 20 inch are the wheels on that cla 20...I've got gla yellow night 17 ...looking at other options for tyres over continental
You should show the outside of the car more instead of just for 15 seconds at the start. I understand you probably don't have multiple cameras and a crew but still....
aproductofboredom no I didn't, for example in the middle of the video when referring to the wing he could insert a picture of it, instead I need to cut back to the start of the video to see what he is talking about.
+Cornwall1888 The time spent splicing in an image of the rear wing is time wasted that he will likely not see a penny for. Now all he does is sink the two camera's and audio and done. If he started doing more the pay off won't be there. Maybe if people watched less from mobile devices and turned off ad blockers content creators would focus more on quality content.
+TheSmokingTire Too bad there's so much negativity in the comments on this. Really enjoyed the video Matt. I'm a longtime viewer and first time commenter. Like others have said, hearing the exhaust outside would have been cool, but nonetheless this whole one-take series has been great in my opinion. As someone looking at buying a car in the used market within the next 2 yrs, it's been great to see such a wide array of cars, and have you review used versions of cars that I'd be interested in buying! It's been really useful in weeding out some of the cars and opening my eyes to some that I didn't think of. Thanks so much for taking the time to make them, and I really look forward to watching the ones to come!
The reason the gearbox is different to the C and E class. Is that the A class DCT uses a true manual gearbox with DCT and is shifted by computer. And the C, E, and S class uses an Automatic box with DCT. The A / CLA definately shift harder and faster. Mercedes say the A45 in Race shifts in 100ms.
How do you know if it is AMG exhaust, I mean it's a difference if you choose sports package instead of the stock ones. How do i know for sure that it is AMG sport exhaust if i would buy one? Please helpp
How would you say it compares to the stage 2 APR audi s3 you drove? I know a stage 2 s3 is a mid 11 sec quarter mile car with 0-60 times in the mid 3 second range and both cars seem to be very tossable.
Seriously.... Best road ever!!! I love what Mercedes AMG are doing of late, ESPECIALLY the C63S, however Having an Evo 6.5 in the garage, (and being a Mitsubishi fanatic) I'm a little bit brand loyal when it comes to AWD 2LT turbo sedans... you know what I mean lol.. Though tuning options for the CLA are only beginning to show the potential of this little car... I'm sure the quality of the interior and well.... the exterior, will sway a lot of people... glad to see they have addressed the front seats with quality performance items!!... for the same money... I feel an Evo 6-10 with the same money poured into it will be the quicker car.. always... but that's relative... the CLA45 and the little hatchback brother is about attracting a much younger audience to the Mercedes AMG family... and THAT... is a good thing for those of us who love driving.... particularly on roads like the one featured in this vid!!! Epic Vid... thankyou for youtubing stuff like this!!! BTW nice work keeping it between the lines during filming!! hahaha
+xellossaxon wow... plenty of self absorbed douche bag hate there... you must drive a honda civic... go hit vtec yo! leave the hate for somewhere else...
in Spain this car cost 63k € without extras and a second hand evo X with low mileage around 25-30k € (Mitshubishi don't sell evos in spain since 2013) so in Europe this mercedes is not very cheap
seems like it could use something to tighten up the steering a bit so you didn't have to turn the wheel as far... judging by the turns vs how far Matt has to turn the wheel.
+OtisENGINEuity the steering is pretty good. don't let the wide angle gopro lens confuse you, this is one of the tightest roads in malibu, and you're looking at it through at 140 degree wide angle lens.
TheSmokingTire yeah but what I'm saying is comparing the turns to how far you had to wrench over the wheel, having to go beyond 90* quite a few times. It seems like you'd typically be saying it'd be nicer to have it a bit tighter so you didn't have to turn it that far.
+Rob Morell It's not cutting fuel, it's retarding the timing by dumping excess fuel into the exhaust. Sort of a more streetable version of anti lag between shifts.
been looking at these... i like the AWD and that Mercedes says its 3450lbs.. for a winter/ daily.. but would like to bump it to 500hp.. be alot more fun.. are the gears as wide as it says on edmunds????.. shows RPM 6500 1st-52.15mph 2nd-82.84mph 3rd-130.72mph 4th-191.73mph
I am confused about the AWD in the a45 and cla45, is it always on or is it normally fwd and sends power to the rear when needed? Also I wish Mercedes or AMG would make cars with manual gear boxes
I wondered this as well as I have a CLA45. The answer I got from an AMG product manager was its mainly FWD until it senses otherwise unless ESP is in Sport or turned off completely. Then it supposedly splits TQ 50/50.
really nice review, although, dont keep slating DCT's they arent automatic, they're much different to what you expect, ofcourse you will experience hesitation when down shifting as it has already selected the next gear up assuming you will keep accelerating, so when you shift down for a corner it has to reselect a lower gear.
So many of the cars you test are running without cats. How does this fly in CA, especially in the case of the viewer cars you're driven? I only ask because CA *used* to be anal about factory smog equipment, but I haven't lived there in about a decade.
Matt would it be possible to give us a quick peek under the hood before each drive?
Loving your one-takes, from Melbourne Australia
+scanspeak00 Melbourne is such a shit hole.
***** cAz oNe Must be a very unhappy individual.
I agree, that's a cool idea.
+scanspeak00 seconded! he did this on some other one takes like the most rcent evo i think.
+cAz oNe Adelaide is a shit hole
Having owned one for a couple months now, I've discovered the best way to downshift 2 or 3 gears as fast as possible. @greyz33tracknissanfan73 I love it, definitely feels much quicker than stock. I feel like you really notice it from 4k to 6k RPMs. Really puts you in the back of your seat.
I really like how the CLA looks. Not too much of a fan of the big wing in the back though.
Pick up my CLA45 shooting brake tomorrow - great timing!
Love the shooting brake version, enjoy it
+oooosq Shooting brake looks much better actually, good choice sir
+oooosq great choice
+oooosq idk, the shooting brake doesn't look the best it could be. but thats just preference.
+Andrew Loo I think it looks better than the four door tho
Another fantastic "one take" Matt, well done mate. You're getting more and more casual in front of the camera which is great, feels like I'm just having a chat with you while driving.
a few decades ago you needed a 7.0L V8 to make 425, amazing how far we've gone to make a 2.0L I4 make this much power.
turbo's but for this baby just one turbo #LOL
A little suggestion Matt: Perhaps when you're doing a walkaround of the car in the beginning of the video, do a small clip of the exhaust? Like the 930 Turbo you did a number of months ago? haha chris harris can drift literally anything
do you have the link to the video ?
+Mr FuckOff Check out his La Ferrari video. Drifting a $1mil+ car, the he is bonkers as he would say.
Ok thanks
+IShoNoHonor He can drift but we never see him do transitions like real drifters..
Canniballistix True but then again I've never seen him on a purpose built drift circuit either. Not saying he can do transitions but I would imagine he could if he wanted to (Just my opinion though).
I'm getting more and more inspired towards the CLA45 better handling than I had thought.
My god I wish I was in California with all those canyons! And of course to meet Matt, but those canyons..... I need those in my life!
I've driven that car for a weekend and immediately fell in love with it! Great little car and great review!
You need to record a fly by of every car you drive. I'm getting a little bored with 'in car' only one takes.
+paNic RELL yeah he need another man to shoot from another car it will give us a view of the car when driving. i was wondering the whole video how does this car looks like from the outside while driving it
These videos do not generate enough money to justify the expense of having a second person there. Sad but true.
+TheSmokingTire That's unfortunate, maybe on the next subscriber submitted one take you can just ask the owner to do as fly by as they leave or something like that. I'm sure they wouldn't mind more camera time with their car.
+TheSmokingTire Tell me next time you're out doing one of these and I'll come film for free (once).
+TheSmokingTire its that difficult to drop a camera on the side of the road for a second?
This is an amazing performance car ( "Baby AMG" ) on the used car market. I have a question. I don't normally like any Mercedes but damn that car looks nice
+Ze Germanz the new ones look beastly
Andrew Loo Yeah I like the more aggressive look, thats why I always preferred the BMWs

+Ze Germanz It is
I like it. I have always wanted to get into German cars, this seems like a good entry. And since Mercs depreciate so quickly, I imagine these things won't be too bad after a few years.
up to 375 from factory now, crazy.
Even in stock form, the shift pop is unreal!
another great video .... i can honestly say that you have become my favorite reviewer.
Hey Matt do you prefer this over a BMW M235i?
I hope Matt answers this
I wouldn't
+Craig J I prefer the RWD, Manual, LSD equipped M235i to the CLA45. If you want AWD, I would not get the BMW.
Does a model of the 235i come with lsd from factory?
+Kwezzy yeah the M235i does
It's insane that an l4 can produce so much goddamned power.
from the factory, for everything else meet the 4g63
Great review and video. Love the sound of this AMG. Been thinking about buying one of these or an Audi S3 saloon. Thanks for taking us on your excellent drive down the mountain
My new 2017 CLA45 amg always downshift instantly.. improved pretty much everything in term of gearbox and look deparmrnt
I've had mine for a little over a year and I love it every time I drive it. Everything stock except for the Revozport carbon lip spoiler and Rotiform rims
Great sound. Yes, the A45 is a wonderful car.
Matt - Great Videos. Only thing I would suggest when doing these reviews is to maybe talk a bit about the competitors to the car being driven and how they stack up against each other. Just something fun to bring up in between stats and details about the car.
I love that sound! I'm not a big fan of 4 cyl, but AMG made that sound sexy, and I'm sure the tune probably helped too.
I was looking for a review on the CLA 45 and when I searched I found a ton of them. For the most part is just people bloviating about the car but then I saw Matt and Doug did reviews and I knew I would get an honest opinion. But you did leave your coffee outside Matt.
Mad respect to Chris for drifting a car with a fwd based hang-on awd system.
I like how you share the road, Matt. Big ups from a driving and cycling enthusiast!
Matt does latiago connect to another road in malibu, or did you just start from the bottom and go up there and start recording from wherever you were
This show is my drug.
I need more.
Give me more.
Latigo used to be my favorite road to skate down back when i lived in LA =)
The amount of people who think the engine sound during shifts is either a rub or a grinding transmission is hilarious
Another awesome video, I've just come to expect it.
Awesome of you to let leave proper room around the roadies!
Thanks for the nice demo. I'm calling my dealer for a used one this week!
Those paddles are gigantic!!
Thx!
it seems like you had to turn the wheel really far just to make those basic corners, or is it just the video??
Love this video. Car looks great. The way you described the car and the small details. Keep it up
No tuned EcoBoost yet? I would love to see you compare a full bolt ons EcoBoost w/suspension to this.
For some reason, anytime i go to full screen on this channel, it skips.. very odd.
Vivid makes great products from what I hear.
Surface area = cooling. Saw-shaped rotors will increase surface area around the circumference, but will decrease the frontal & rear surface area. So depending on the geometry, the saw-rotors could definitely improve cooling. As well, it could have a similar effect to slotted rotors, improving initial grip and performance
what do you mean when you say Evo? all i could think of is the Lancer Evo. is this a type of style or engine?
The sound at each shift is just weird. Is there a marked shoving or slinging feeling as the next upshift locks in?
Who do you feel makes the best dual clutch type gearbox?
I'm still adjusting to a Merc, with a 4 banger and turbo, that goes like an EVO..

if you get a Porsche manual, not only do they have great throw and feel smoother than other manual boxes, but you can also press the 'sport plus' button and it engages an auto blip feature so you basically only clutch in and down shift without revmatching and it blips the throttle for you for perfect rematches.
so yeah when it comes to transmissions, nothing beats Porsche.
Where did you get the side skirts and the front lip ? Please lmk thanks!
I like the comparison you made to the Evo.
Where is that road? It's amazing, can you maybe link google maps here?
What road is this? Looks WICKED nice to cruise on
Hey Matt,
Any news on if the Alfa 4C is getting aftermarket attention? I'd be cool to see you test a modified one, it's so fast stock.
Not a big fan of the crunchy exhaust note on gear changes, I would get annoyed by that really quick
I'm liking the support for the manual box in the other comments. This would be the perfect car if it had a manual. Top and interior and exterior. I don't give a toss about setting fast times on the track. I just want to enjoy changing gear when I choose to.
U cann set transmision to manuel and shift with padels, right?
That gearbox seems a little slow?
+Fr. Duffy Fighting 69th No it doesn't

You can cut that volume down considerably in comfort mode for everyday driving!
+TheSmokingTire Nice review there... Whats that on your wrist? Cant tell but i like it
Hey Matt, where do we send you our wheelwell page for review for a one take?
355 hp stock Matt. And the 2016 now has 375 hp sick and much better shifting and baking.
Those paddle shifters are HUGE
Dunlop tyres mine came standard with 20 inch are the wheels on that cla 20...I've got gla yellow night 17 ...looking at other options for tyres over continental
how do you smog that without cats? how does vivid get away with removing federal smog equipment?
Iv heard you can get to that hp level with just an ecu. I have the gla 45 amg and I want exhaust upgrade and ecu. Maybe after tax season.
The more I see these little amg's around the more I like their look
Did you just say Little Amg? AMG IS THE BOSS SIR
I've seen the majority of the one-takes, and I don't think I've heard you grunt and squeak as much as this one... what was it about this car?
Why u didnt pas by this car at: 11:25 ? To demo a power of CLA45 to us ;)
Wait. Where did that Civic dissapear? You haven't catched it back after stopping on the right side...
hello, great video. I know you did a video before with a 2007 or 2006 bmw m5 v10 can you tell me the different between m5 and this car.
You should show the outside of the car more instead of just for 15 seconds at the start. I understand you probably don't have multiple cameras and a crew but still....
You know you just contradicted yourself right?
aproductofboredom no I didn't, for example in the middle of the video when referring to the wing he could insert a picture of it, instead I need to cut back to the start of the video to see what he is talking about.

Great review. Nice red color. And the houses on that road look amazing too!
Europe also has the CLA45 model.
Doesn't the USA get the A45 model too?
+Flávio Coimbra No, just the GLA and CLA.

Nice, but there is NO way for Mercedes to replace the Evo. Mitsu only ended the lancer Evo, not the Evo name itself.
i assume in person the shift noise sounds good though ? on mic it sounds like a honda grinding 3rd gear
Matt, please review the C63 AMG S coupe. I would love to hear your thoughts.
How would you say it compares to the stage 2 APR audi s3 you drove? I know a stage 2 s3 is a mid 11 sec quarter mile car with 0-60 times in the mid 3 second range and both cars seem to be very tossable.

I strongly believe you'd have gotten more out of it on Angeles crest. Love the car. Goals!
that road looks irritating.. are those lane markers bumps?
seems like it could use something to tighten up the steering a bit so you didn't have to turn the wheel as far... judging by the turns vs how far Matt has to turn the wheel.
Is removing the catalytic converter not illegal?
Can you please tell me how is the new height of this car in terms of milimeters after coilover ?
Lol look how fast you was going to even downshift in second 10:30 I’m sure the cla was trying to save you transmission and dignity lol
Is that sound (fart) during each up-shift fuel cut/limiting engine speed to the next gear or something else?
+Rob Morell It's not cutting fuel, it's retarding the timing by dumping excess fuel into the exhaust. Sort of a more streetable version of anti lag between shifts.
how much is the tune, coilovers, exhaust and aero?
would be nice to hear the cold Start and suggest better camera angles other than seeing you drive the whole time. maybe outside around the exhaust.

been looking at these... i like the AWD and that Mercedes says its 3450lbs.. for a winter/ daily.. but would like to bump it to 500hp.. be alot more fun..
are the gears as wide as it says on edmunds????.. shows
RPM 6500 1st-52.15mph 2nd-82.84mph 3rd-130.72mph 4th-191.73mph
I am confused about the AWD in the a45 and cla45, is it always on or is it normally fwd and sends power to the rear when needed? Also I wish Mercedes or AMG would make cars with manual gear boxes
I wondered this as well as I have a CLA45. The answer I got from an AMG product manager was its mainly FWD until it senses otherwise unless ESP is in Sport or turned off completely. Then it supposedly splits TQ 50/50.
how do these types of tunes effect the factory warranty?
really enjoyed this drive. thanks! special thanks for exposing me to the civic annunciation I have never heard. lol funny
really nice review, although, dont keep slating DCT's they arent automatic, they're much different to what you expect, ofcourse you will experience hesitation when down shifting as it has already selected the next gear up assuming you will keep accelerating, so when you shift down for a corner it has to reselect a lower gear.
So many of the cars you test are running without cats. How does this fly in CA, especially in the case of the viewer cars you're driven? I only ask because CA *used* to be anal about factory smog equipment, but I haven't lived there in about a decade.
