For those who are less familiar with the make-up of the water supply system in the Los Angeles region, understand that the L.A. Basin is essentially a desert for many months of the year. Domestic water is brought into the region from hundreds of miles away through aqueducts, and stored in reservoirs. The water supply is, in many cases, both fragile and finite. Having a 2,000GPM "leak" in the water system for more than a few minutes can really begin to take a toll on the system's capacity and capability, both for firefighting water and for potable water. For this reason, the FD is tasked with and trained for emergently containing leaks from sheared hydrants. And L.A. uses wet-barrel hydrants; the water comes up the barrel right to the caps, even when it's turned off. This is beneficial to them because each cap has its own valve, and supply lines can be connected/disconnected while other lines on the same hydrant remain flowing. This is why there's no cut-off valve when the hydrant is sheared. As always, be reminded that it isn't wrong just because it isn't the way your department or city does it.

Mack Flickerson I’m not sure if that was directed at me , but I never implied that it was wrong , and anyway my Fire Dept has nothing to do with installing or maintenance of Fire Hydrants , the Water Dept handles that. It’s not our choice nor do we care ... in areas like NYC or anywhere that is exposed to prolonged freezing Temperatures we MUST have Dry Barrel hydrants , other wise they would freeze & be unusable in a winter months . It’s just a added bonus that dry barrel hydrants also don’t become a Geyser of water when sheered off ... I honestly thought that was only stuff that was i the movies because in 24 years working & 47 years living in the NYC area I have never seen a fire hydrant shoot water 40 feet into the up I to the sky . Only seen in it movies until this video & i have seen many hydrants knocked over by cars in my life . I was only commenting on who repairs & maintains hydrants . Although the fire department I work at & many others I know of on the east coast Regularly do fire hydrant inspection just to make sure they’re functioning if we find a hydrant That isn’t functioning we notify the water department... ok enough fire hydrant talk I hope 🤞

If they understood that hydrants are tapped off the main using a saddle connection with the valve located between the tap and the hydrant 2 to 10 feet directly from it, they wouldn't have wasted time operating the wrong valve 60 feet from the hydrant.
Well done. We had to call City Water Works to shut off broken or frozen hydrants. Winter here in Canada made it more interesting creating really cool ice sculptures.
We use to paint our hydrant valves half blue half yellow, it made it easy to know what was a hydrant valve. You might look at the other hydrants to see where there valve is located.

I remember on Emergency where they had this unusual call. The Squad has to extract the driver of the wrecked car and the engine company has to turn off the main until a new hydrant is installed.

In a system that large I would be surprised if the pump station even noticed this. I worked got the WW for 7 years in IN. A contractor tying in an water tower knocked off the 24” valve, took 10 mins before pump station saw the drop in pressure. Contractor called screaming in about a minute. We had it shut off in 40 mins. I think I heard we lost over a million gallons.
I'm surprised not to see a comment about why two pieces of apparatus were sent. In this case LAFD ladder trucks have no pumping capability and no water tank so a regular Type I engine always accompanies the ladder truck. They always have an engine number that is 200 above the truck. Here this is Truck 94 accompanied by Engine 294. Station 94's regular engine would be Engine 94. At station 101 you would have a Light Force with Truck 101 and Engine 301. There are single Type I engines and some stations with only a single engine. When a regular engine joins a "Light Force" it is then called a "Task Force." At the time of this call, the regular Engine 94 might have already been assigned or is one with a paramedic on board, so they might give the hydrant calls to Light Forces only, I don't know. I imagine it is now DWP's job to make the repairs to place a new hydrant at the location. Years ago, now some 47 of them, when I lived in L.A., the LAFD had "plug buggies," which were a pickup with a single firefighter. I think they did preventative maintenance and tested the hydrants to make sure they were working on some sort of schedule, like once a year or something. Do they still use those units?
i'm sure someone will come along with that question soon! you're correct, truck companies carry hydrant shut off keys so all incidents involving a sheared hydrant will get at least a light force. and correct again, once the hydrant is shut down, the captain will contact metro and request "DWP for a sheared hydrant shut down at the intersection of..." followed by the location of the incident. Plug Buggies are still around. however, from what i've seen, during annual hose testing, the entire task force (and sometimes the rescues too) split the area to knock out more hydrants faster. i've really only seen plug buggies used for transferring equipment/personnel between stations, grocery store runs, reliefs of firefighters at incidents for prolonged periods of time near shift change, and other fire station needs. thanks for watching!

Interesting that the FD is sent at all. In Canada, at least in BC, the city's water operators are responsible for shutting down sheared hydrants, if they happen to be a wet barrel. Most are dry barrels, so there's no geyser when sheared off :)
@@MidnightPolak This was my thought. Why not dispatch LA Department of Water and Power? Even if you send a Light Force, why go Code 3? What "emergency" was there in this situation? My department used to run code 3 to gas meters that were hit or leaking. A new chief (had been a CAPT with the volunteer department for ages) changed that and made it a non-code response unless we had an indication it was a fire/explosive hazard. The goal was to reduce running code 3 and the risks that entail. Just my thoughts. I'm not here to second guess these guys of LAFD doing fine work. I did notice that the CAPT (orange helmet) stayed high and dry the whole time. I guess rank does have its privileges! lol

Per National Fire Code if a fire hydrant is struck by a vehicle the exposed hydrant top is designed to break away from the main body of the fire hydrant to prevent a water ruptured like in video. In this case the hydrant body must have broken off from the 6" water main extension pipe servicing the hydrant, or a shear coupling was not installed for water to be shooting up to the sky like this. Every fire hydrant is designed to stay seated by water main pressure if the hydrant top is sheared off from the stem due to its upside down seat and disc design. Each fire hydrant is also to have its own isolation valve located 3'-5' from the hydrant. This is required to isolate only the hydrant for maintenance or replacement instead of having to isolate the entire water main loop keeping water service from homes and businesses. What's going on here is a puzzle.
The water authorities don't do Hydrants , it's the fire departments responsibility to tend to something like that , water authorities only do water line maintenance for homes and businesses.

@@OwneyMadden430 Hydrants are nearly impossible to open without the help of a Hydrant wrench , very few people can even get them to open and nobody definitely can't open the valve without a Hydrant tool because they are tightly shut and it requires a firefighters full strength sometimes to get the valve to budge. Ordinary people don't have tools large enough to open a Hydrant.

Yes definitely another advantage of having a dry barrel hydrants up here in the ole mtns of tn they would have broken off been replaced in a few hours without the waterlost. Wonder why they went to that first valve looks like they all should have a valve in front of the hydrant.
That's the beauty of it lol. There's not always a foot valve at the hydrant. I'm in Chattanooga and run into that problem often. Either no foot valve or one nowhere near the front of the hydrant.
We have dry hydrants and where we are in the mountains, have about 175.0 PSI which would shoot water quite a bit higher than they have going here. Cool idea for clearing the valve box though!
This looks to be a "wet barrel" design, in it the valves are in the hydrant unlike a "dry barrel" design where the valves are below ground and doesn't geyser like this one when it gets damaged
Decades ago the hydrant down the street was knocked off. My 17 year old sister took a bottle of shampoo and in her late 1970s bikini washed her hair. Only to be stopped by the CHP as she was in full view of the hollywood freeway and was causing a traffic jam. Juanita and middleberry streets FYI. it was a hot day.
Just remember the warmer climate have these types of HYDRANT. Colder areas have a break away on ROD to base. The barrel is dry, it drains ( Hopefully) just depends on area of USA you live in.
No, fire Hydrants are open run systems that only have a valve in the top of the Hydrant so when it gets severed from the ground there's nothing to stop the water from coming out.
Wisconsin hydrants have a nut on top connected to a rod that runs about 6 ft deep to a valve. That valve supplies the water. The rod is designed to be the weakest link. If hydrant is hit, rod generally snaps. Sometimes it doesn't. For this an/or hydrant maintenance/replacement there's a valve in between the hydrant and water main.
A few weeks ago,there was a big water brake on the street and I was skateboarding and 5 seconds later after I passed the hole,water squirted everywhere luckily I didnt get wet but the firemen called some people to fix it,they didnt fix it because there was a emergency and they were leaving

That valve in the intersection is a hundred years old it's never going to turn without busting it right off and then you've got two problems Go get a 12-in pipe with bolt flanges and a valve and attach it to the base

It took me years of letter writing to get the hydrant on Wilton place at 5th st moved to avoid it being knocked off constantly and unusable. station 29 can you hear me. I finally cornered the 29 captain one day and pointed it out. I wonder if the power box on Wilton and wilshire is still wrapped in a yellow fiberglass blanket as the panel over the infused power cables is still missing after 10 years.
Can any of that be captured to use for any reason, seems like a collection system can be invented to do that ? Even a transfer pump to another vehicle of some sort. Think of all these wild fires nowadays and how Helicopters r used sometimes u take water from nearby swimming pools.
There is a similar video of the exact same thing occurring in NYC. This video is the perfect example of the drama that comes with working in LA . NYC used one engine company, essentially one guy most of the time working the valve , finished closing valve with a second FF . LA has multiple FF’s , a hand-line stretched and what sounds like news helicopters hovering overhead and to top it off the videographer who was on scene before FD’s arrival ….. doesn’t have footage of the valve finally be shut ! 🤦🏻♂️

No public works / Water department type of agency available out in LA ? I know the FD i work we wouldn’t attempt that we would block off the street & wait for Water commission guys to come lol , our problem in the ghetto where we work in the summer the kids open the hydrants to play in the water on super hot days , so we go all around the city shutting them off all day long , then 20 min later were back & there open again 😂.. In Los Angeles, the fire department responds emergently to shut off sheared hydrants because the water supply is so fragile. Understand that the LA Basin is basically a desert for many months out of the year. Domestic water is brought in to the city's reservoirs by aquaducts, often from hundreds of miles away, and that supply is ultimately very limited. A 2,000gpm "leak" in the system can be extremely detrimental not only to available water for fire fighting, but also for potable water supply. The less time such a leak is allowed to go, the better for everyone.

More than ever now the entire state has been taking a beating with wildfires from the multi year Drought that they are in the middle of ... The difference is in NYC area where I’m a FF & any other area that is prone to prolonged freezing conditions we use Dry Barrel hydrants that when sheered off do not create a Geyser of water . In fact not a drop comes out if a car knocks a dry barrel over . Maybe LA & other city’s in Southern Cali should look into installing them to avoid this kind of situation .

If the would have spec and purchased mid central northern hydrants this would never lose a drop because when the top portion of the hydrant gets sheared off for what ever reason the valve would shut under pressure and relatively no loss of water. Poor choice in style of hydrants.

if it is down below the hills in LA it is all gravity fed even then some of the houses up on hills are still getting plenty of pressure with no pumps

Per National Fire Code if a fire hydrant is struck by a vehicle the exposed hydrant top is designed to break away from the main body of the fire hydrant to prevent a water ruptured like in video. In this case the hydrant body must have broken off from the 6" water main extension pipe servicing the hydrant, or a shear coupling was not installed for water to be shooting up to the sky like this.
Every fire hydrant is designed to stay seated by water main pressure if the hydrant top is sheared off from the stem due to its upside down seat and disc design. Each fire hydrant is also to have its own isolation valve located 3'-5' from the hydrant. This is required to isolate only the hydrant for maintenance or replacement instead of having to isolate the entire water main loop keeping water service from homes and businesses. What's going on here is a puzzle.

The water authorities don't do Hydrants , it's the fire departments responsibility to tend to something like that , water authorities only do water line maintenance for homes and businesses.
That’s what I said . In the city i work as a Firefighter , this type of Incident would be handled by the City Water Dept , firefighters only go around & shut hydrants down opened up by kids to play in the water on super hot days , it’s there only way to cool down in the inner city’s
@@OwneyMadden430 Hydrants are nearly impossible to open without the help of a Hydrant wrench , very few people can even get them to open and nobody definitely can't open the valve without a Hydrant tool because they are tightly shut and it requires a firefighters full strength sometimes to get the valve to budge.

Yes definitely another advantage of having a dry barrel hydrants up here in the ole mtns of tn they would have broken off been replaced in a few hours without the waterlost. Wonder why they went to that first valve looks like they all should have a valve in front of the hydrant.
That's the beauty of it lol. There's not always a foot valve at the hydrant. I'm in Chattanooga and run into that problem often. Either no foot valve or one nowhere near the front of the hydrant.
But the wet barrel is so much easier to replace if it has breakaway bolts.

We have dry hydrants and where we are in the mountains, have about 175.0 PSI which would shoot water quite a bit higher than they have going here. Cool idea for clearing the valve box though!

This looks to be a "wet barrel" design, in it the valves are in the hydrant unlike a "dry barrel" design where the valves are below ground and doesn't geyser like this one when it gets damaged
an auto cutoff could create water hammer and cause a main break on block. needs to be shut slowly to prevent that.

Decades ago the hydrant down the street was knocked off. My 17 year old sister took a bottle of shampoo and in her late 1970s bikini washed her hair. Only to be stopped by the CHP as she was in full view of the hollywood freeway and was causing a traffic jam. Juanita and middleberry streets FYI. it was a hot day.
Just remember the warmer climate have these types of HYDRANT. Colder areas have a break away on ROD to base. The barrel is dry, it drains ( Hopefully) just depends on area of USA you live in.

No, fire Hydrants are open run systems that only have a valve in the top of the Hydrant so when it gets severed from the ground there's nothing to stop the water from coming out.
In the northeast they are. The actual valve is below the frost line in the main.
Wisconsin hydrants have a nut on top connected to a rod that runs about 6 ft deep to a valve. That valve supplies the water. The rod is designed to be the weakest link. If hydrant is hit, rod generally snaps. Sometimes it doesn't. For this an/or hydrant maintenance/replacement there's a valve in between the hydrant and water main.

A few weeks ago,there was a big water brake on the street and I was skateboarding and 5 seconds later after I passed the hole,water squirted everywhere luckily I didnt get wet but the firemen called some people to fix it,they didnt fix it because there was a emergency and they were leaving

It's too bad the city hasn't figured out to keep the valves in the street, with a minimum of one full length piece of pipe between hydrant and shut-off valve.
It took me years of letter writing to get the hydrant on Wilton place at 5th st moved to avoid it being knocked off constantly and unusable. station 29 can you hear me. I finally cornered the 29 captain one day and pointed it out. I wonder if the power box on Wilton and wilshire is still wrapped in a yellow fiberglass blanket as the panel over the infused power cables is still missing after 10 years.
I installed BAYARD SAPHIR CHOC hydrants. They can be bumped with a car and no leak, they have breakable bolts and the tap don't get open.

There is a similar video of the exact same thing occurring in NYC. This video is the perfect example of the drama that comes with working in LA . NYC used one engine company, essentially one guy most of the time working the valve , finished closing valve with a second FF . LA has multiple FF’s , a hand-line stretched and what sounds like news helicopters hovering overhead and to top it off the videographer who was on scene before FD’s arrival ….. doesn’t have footage of the valve finally be shut ! 🤦🏻♂️

Probably cost. Wet hydrants are much less per hydrant. That's what they tell us in my city.

I know the FD i work we wouldn’t attempt that we would block off the street & wait for Water commission guys to come lol , our problem in the ghetto where we work in the summer the kids open the hydrants to play in the water on super hot days , so we go all around the city shutting them off all day long , then 20 min later were back & there open again 😂.. LAFD I give you guys big time respect , that’s dedication boys 🤙🏽
In Los Angeles, the fire department responds emergently to shut off sheared hydrants because the water supply is so fragile. Understand that the LA Basin is basically a desert for many months out of the year. Domestic water is brought in to the city's reservoirs by aquaducts, often from hundreds of miles away, and that supply is ultimately very limited. A 2,000gpm "leak" in the system can be extremely detrimental not only to available water for fire fighting, but also for potable water supply. The less time such a leak is allowed to go, the better for everyone.
All that was very well described in the very first pinned post. LA is not your city. They do things a little differently.
Mack Flickerson I understand that about the water shortages and the desert climate . More than ever now the entire state has been taking a beating with wildfires from the multi year Drought that they are in the middle of ... The difference is in NYC area where I’m a FF & any other area that is prone to prolonged freezing conditions we use Dry Barrel hydrants that when sheered off do not create a Geyser of water . In fact not a drop comes out if a car knocks a dry barrel over . Maybe LA & other city’s in Southern Cali should look into installing them to avoid this kind of situation .

One area pays for it one way, another area pays for it another way. I'm pretty sure it's ok with most LA firemen if NY does their hydrants the way NY wants to do their hydrants.
If the would have spec and purchased mid central northern hydrants this would never lose a drop because when the top portion of the hydrant gets sheared off for what ever reason the valve would shut under pressure and relatively no loss of water. Poor choice in style of hydrants.
