Good overview and information. When I got the email from Garmin, I thought the better maps sounded great. But after watching this, I think they'll be too much of a hassle to download, and then eventually delete to free up space for new areas. I'll stick with the pre-loaded for now.
The reason I purchased the Fenix was due to its preloaded free! Maps. It's a shame this isn't free due to the cost you are paying for the item. I could use it for detail on approach to climbing routes, but will just take a Google map screen shot to save money. Good review.
Agree 1000%. This watch is behind and basically sucks for most things compared to an Apple watch. This and battery were the only two things I downgraded to a 2005 level tech then they charge. I'm really mad.
The ownership stuff is useful if you're exploring rather than going on established trails. For people trying to find 4x4 trails it can be helpful because its not always clear whether some dirt path that disappears into the woods is somewhere you're allowed to drive or someone's driveway. You can also use it to contact the land owner if you're looking for permission. Probably best for 4x4s and hunters.
Finally, Garmin also launched a subscription service. I was wondering for how long they hold on just selling great watches without the yearly-monthly subscription milking...
I doubt they'll start a subscription service for the basics. This is a very niche product. Most people will be perfectly happy with the free maps pre-installed on the watch.

Could u download multiple square miles? Like ...if it only allows you a maximum of 5 square miles per download......could i download multiple 5 square mile downloads to cover an entire are larger then the max allowed for one single download?
Are maps downloded still usable even if you end your subscription? Tnx
I am going to Zion National park but I cant seem to find out how to download the park to my Gen 2 epics. I have Outdoor maps + sub, but whenever I search, it just times out. Any tips? I find this system very unintuitive and frustrating!
That seems cool and all, but it also seems like at the point of needing that much detail you would be much better off using your phone.
Is it available on Garmin 6 pro?
Estará disponible para los demás países?
Damn, new studio looks and sounds so good!!! 🙌 Maps+ looks good and $50 per year isn't too outrageous. I just don't need maps as much as some Ultra running type weirdos. Great video as always 👌
can you remove unwanted maps from other countries to free up memory? (the factory installed maps)
Ok nice but how do you put custom maps on these watches?
You can simply upload them over a USB connection from your computer as long as they're standard IMG map files.
Hi
Do you know if this works in the UK?
love the new studio! how's the toe?
Toe is almost 100%! Thanks!
Cool studio! Do you know anything about international coverage?
Unfortunately this is only available in the USA at the time of this comment.
that private land boundries feature sounds like it might be interesting for wildcampers
But paying a subscription service on top of an overpriced watch is not something i can or want to shill out for
Garmin should yet update the Topoactive maps and then propose an update for more detailled maps. I'm stuck with 2021 imagery and it sucks
Can this only be done at home? On WiFi? Would be useful in the wild
Unfortunately it needs to be on wifi to download the maps so you'll need to plan ahead if you need them in the field.
@@ChaseTheSummit ah ok thanks 😊 just discovered USA only at mo. Maybe uk in future. Talkytoaster does perfectly well :)
WOW usd50? I find it expensive for Argentine... does it include all de globe? or only USA?
Is the maps on the outdoor maps+ routable?
Yes
You know, I am really between between the Garmin Fenix 7X Sapphire and the Apple Watch Ultra. They lost me at the $50 subscription.
Keep in mind the Fenix 7X includes free maps pre-installed when you buy it. This mapping subscription is only for additional map layers that most people likely don't even need. It's really for specific niche use cases.
@@ChaseTheSummit Oh I misunderstood that, thank you for clarifying. I re-watched your video and I see you clearly explained this but I missed it. Thank you for the nice note and I kept binging your videos and ended up buying the Garmin Fenix 7x Sapphire after all. Excited to see more of your videos.
Hey brother, appreciate your videos! Was curious what the outdoor maps + was for my f7x. Do you happen to know, will the maps still be available if your subscription ends?
The maps won't be available once you cancel. The watch checks in on the cloud server every now and then. Once you cancel the watch would revert back to the pre-installed topo maps.
@@ChaseTheSummit ahh that sucks, at least with BirdEye you kept what you downloaded for the life of the watch.....
Thank you for the video! Question, as these are described as map layers, does this mean I need the regular map as well at the same time? I am on “basic” Fenix 7 and after installing the EU maps, I am already almost out of space…
I'm pretty sure you could delete the standard basemap if you only wanted to use these layers but keep in mind these are only region specific.
Does it work with the fenix 6x?
Not at this time. Hopefully that's added.
is this outdoor maps include philippine map?
Ahh these look so cool, i’d love it if it makes it over to the 955 🤞🏻
You lost me at subscription
They should have this for the military is full res color
Where did you get those watch band from?
"Ancool" on Amazon.
Kind of a lot of money when Gaia has the same map layer, cheaper and does way more.
Available in the uk?
Not yet. However, I think they plan to roll this out globally over time.
Would be nice if I could pay for only the maps I would use. They should have different subscription levels instead of just a flat fee for all of them. I would totally pay $20 a year for the raster, enhanced topo and water features.
Huh … no mention of the 965’s potential ability to use this …. And in your podcast you didn’t mention the 965 as something you’re looking forward to … methinks someone is testing the new 965 and 265.
Love the new studio, Dave! As for the maps, seems kinda like a money grab. Like the $600+ for the watch wasn’t enough? 😂
Thanks! Sort of depends on your use case. Most people don't need this level of detail or the added hunting/water maps. But if you do... This is probably something you'd be interested in. The standard basemap that's included on the Fenix/Epix is still more detail than most people need.
Would the maps work worldwide or is it just US Canada available?
USA just for now, I should have mentioned that!
@@ChaseTheSummit thanks for the quick reply. I noticed that too on their site. I had birdseye imagery installed on my previous F6X but now I upgraded to F7X without the ability to use that. I tried to reach out to them and I'm waiting for a reply on that. Anyway keep up the good work on your channel!
Thank you
