  • @Coast2CoastFlyin
    @Coast2CoastFlyin 9 місяців тому +8

    Assuming he actually drops an album sometime this century, and it lives up to the hype, Playboi Carti is definitely a contender. His influence is already easy to see, especially in the underground scene, where entire subgenres have emerged in the wake of WLR.
    I agree that the way we consume music has changed, and in a lot of ways spells the end of the megastar as we have come to know it. The ease of accessibility for new niche underground music that appeals to the specific tastes of smaller but still significant groups of people, combined with the lack of memory for things that aren't immediately in front of us creates an environment where if you aren't dropping every year then people lose interest. Only big names can afford to take time to craft their next project with care and precision. And so that pressure to be prolific means up and coming new artists focus on quantity over quality, making the release of a bad project an inevitability, and often ends their career, or at least stops them from becoming a superstar. And even if they manage to consistently release good music once or twice a year, the music often falls short of its potential had they been able to spend more time working on certain concepts and ideas.
    Of currently well established rappers, Future, 21 Savage, and (assuming he doesn't end up spending the next 10+ years in jail) Young Thug all fit the criteria, although they're also all more or less contemporaries of Drake Cole and Kendrick. But so is Tyler, who's been around since 2010. All these dudes are around the same age, most in their late 20's-early 30's. Not sure exactly how old Drake and Cole are, but none of these dudes are pushing 40 just yet.

      the term "classic" for rap albuilms has kind of dulled i meaning over time. Like theres levels to classics otherwise you got illmatic having the same level to astroworld smh...
      I mean original def is project that age well over time. I would also add it was phrase critically in high rating/some innovation that positively affected the genre.
      I guess that's where masterpiece > classic but i consider them the same. Always thought a classic albulm had to be a t least a light 9 or even a strong 8 round it to a 9. But anything lower, even if its amazing (7-8), is not.@@redism5067

    Tyler is already a goat named Felicia lol.
    But srsly, he's the only one I see continuing to progress on all fronts for a while. He's been steadily evolving and honing his craft since the beginning of his career while marching to the beat of his own drum, which I imagine is not easy to do in a genre that's all about competition. He's also been around as long as Drake, Kendrick and Cole despite being several years younger than them. Even with all his success he's accrued in recent years, I don't think he's peaked yet and honestly, I feel like his influence on various parts of the music industry and the inroads he has made in Hip-Hop since the days of Odd Future is oft overlooked and uncredited. All of that to say about him as just a rap artist, we haven't even touched on him being a complete auteur which is uncommon in not just Hip-Hop, but popular music in general. There isn't an aspect of his art, musically or visually, that he isn't either driving or solely responsible for. He wears his namesake well.
    If you can't already tell, he's already heading towards legend status in my eyes lol.

    The next guy must be hungry, he must be the hungriest, most talented, polarising man in the world to lift the bar from where Kendrick and those before him left it, and to be the next greatest he must lift the bar again, which I don't see any of the current rappers in the game doing.

Off top game was arguably one of the best. Not to mention his first album was an insant classic.
