it's weird, but as a producer and a rapper, along with the new wave of rap-rock, not realising it, I also started listening to more rock'ish, or even metal'ish things like System, Slipknot or Nirvana and even playing the guitar again (I first picked it up in 2018, but didn't like it back then)
Although New Jack Swing first merged in the late '80s, it's really more associated with the early '90s. Bell Biv Devoe's "Poison" came out in 1990. The movie "New Jack City" came out in 1991, as did Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' album (which had several New Jack Swing tracks produced by Teddy Riley), and The Arsenio Hall Show, which featured many New Jack Swing artists as musical guests, propelled the genre into the mainstream in the early '90s. As for Hip-Hop, I'm down for anything new. The whole trap-derived sound has been soooooooo played out, it's a joke. It's time to bury it in the ground.
I still click on your videos expecting them to be the usual youtube ramble about a vague point, slightly related to the clickbait title. I am wrong every time with your videos, they are well thought out, concise, and have some awesome knowledge and opinions sprinkled throughout. Big fan.
This video was definitely interesting for me since even before realizing this boom of Rap Rock was happening I was mostly making beats (although stylistically it's something more leaning towards what Billy Woods, Lil Ugly Mane and ELUCID would rap on than Slowthai) that sampled a lot of Rock/Metal artists. I might even site some of these artists as my main inspirations over most Hip Hop artists tbh. Bands like Manic Street Preachers(their earlier works), Swans, Soundgarden, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Electric Wizard, Shining, Unwound and Black Flag all influenced me heavily when it comes to both sound and lyricism so it's really cool to see this phenomenon being more common

great video! one thing that I think about a lot as an aspiring producer is the history of recorded music, but primarily how that impacts modern day music. In the last 10 years or so, we've had a lot more accessibility to countless eras and times of music unlike any year beforehand. Likewise, its easier to discover new music from any style or any time in history. Compare music platforms to the early 2000s for example, we don't need to go out, find a CD someone might have reviewed, and check it out, you can just swipe a screen and find polyrhythmic gregorian chant music if you wanted. That being said, this era in the music industry is really unique in history because of how many producers throughout many years can implement their influences of any year or style of music into modern music. To build off your mentioning of the cyclical nature of music, I think the era of music we exist in is the equivalent of duct taping that cycle onto the wheel of a Porche 911 on the autoban. Artists are trying to get the motown tonality feeling while incorporating phil collins styled snares with gated reverbs, and this could al be on some ska track. Ultimately this is all fun and good to think about but so what? I think if you're an aspiing producer, you should go out of your normal listening routine and find something you might not have heard before and break it down and allow it to drive you to create something new. How does Joy Division craft an ambiance and where do the instruments sit in the mix? how does that compare to a Funkadelic mix? Whats the tonality difference between 70s funk drums and 80s pop drums? how would you create that? I think by doing exercises like this will fundamentally make you a stronger producer but also help you find a blend of different genres through time that might not have been done before.
Culture goes in cycles. Every 20 - 30 years you hear the music influence & see the fashion of about 20/30 years prior. Just missing some held out power chords on an electric guitar at the start of each bar

@@Bagheera_Smoov yeah, I mean I can see how you could argue that some grunge elements are going to become more mainstream soon, but the underground is deeper than that by definition and he seems to be arguing that grunge is the norm there? Which isn’t true, despite what youtubers may tell you underground hip hop is deeper than Griselda (which is hardly underground these days) who aren’t that grungy anyways, if anything in recent years I think there’s been a much bigger return to acoustic and live sounding music underground than anything more electronic. And pop music certainly isn’t gonna become any more dirty anytime soon. Listen to that new Drake album, or really any other pop album. I don’t see much distortion there.
@@Bagheera_Smoovhe’s talking like nascar aloe or triplesixdelete beats it’s kinda a passing wave at this point but it had its time in the underground and has and probably will influence more mainstream artists to some degree, but I’m with you on the opinion that no major artist sounds fully like this style and it doesn’t appeal to mainstream audiences so it would have an incredibly hard time surfacing as the “next wave”
Run DMC was doing Rap Rock mix in the early 80's. They were the ones who made that popular. Look up their songs Rock Box, Walk This Way and Raising Hell.
I don’t see it going from 808’s to this style of Hip Hop. More so it’s probably going to go back to more of a sample based form of Hip Hop. This kind of Hip Hop will not get in play in the clubs or cars nowadays. Maybe it’ll work on a smaller scale as far as some niche off brand underground stuff but not on a large scale. Sample based Hip Hop is about to take over again.
So basically what Drum&Bass has been doing since the late 90’s. 170-177 BPM is my element. It’ll be hard for anybody to top it. I can do that BPM without making it sound so fast.
This definitely sounds similar early DnB and fits in the timeframe Navie D is talking about, like 1992 ~ 97. With that said, DnB has mastered this sound. I would hope if Hip-Hop was going to move in this direction, they would skip the stumbling through the "figure it out" phase, and just make DnB instrumentals with a focus on the rapping.
EVERYTHING goes in cycles my man. Literally everything including life. Day to day grinds. Leaving home then circling right back. Music resolving on its home chord. Everything goes in circles. Politics=many tics on a clock. It's the real significance of the Circle. The earth may be a ball but when you look at it or the moon or sun you're seeing a circle. The earth cycles around the sun, the moon cycles around the earth. I could go on but it's literally everywhere.

i know the aim of your channel is based in teaching/advising beat PRODUCTION. However i wish you would have continued the "Music goes in circles" theme of topic, it was really interesting . is there any possibility you could make a full video on this .
i'm glad other people are saying it: this is classical late 90's, early 00's drum & bass. why is that weird?? 6:56 sounds very much like concord dawn, if you ask me. check "uprising", their 2003 album, and you'll hear exactly the steps/elements mr d suggests on this video.
It's an undeniable fact that individualism will always be the trendsetter. Game changers like Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and Otis Redding dared to pave their own way and revolutionize the music industry. If you want to leave a mark and make a difference, you need to learn the game, but then you must go above and beyond by flipping the script and creating something truly unique and remarkable. That's the only way to become a true trendsetter and make your mark in this world. (Generated by AI using Grammarly 😂 i's so smart 🤣) PS. Like always, another great post...
you can also see the influence if 90s rnb in the new underground rap genres of Pluggnb and Sexxnb which have taken over the underground the past few years and are becoming really popular
Id love to see a video on netuh beats type of beats like his crazier ones. Sorry to be so vague on that request i just can’t think of any specific names atm but any beats in that dark underground horrorcore type of genre.
Everything goes through cycles the pendulum swings from one extreme to another. Im a marketing student but i took one trend forcasting class in the fashion major and i swear to God it allowed me to see things I'd never noticed
I'm glad people brought up city morgue as somebody who's already covering this genre but I'd also like to bring up ghostmane, he has been doing it as well
1:00 I mean Beyoncé was also making music back in the 90s and had a similar sound to the new song. You made great points, I just think that her song might’ve been a call back to her old sound
I already am onto this just today I thought to myself today whether it is even rap that I am creating and mixing for myself at this time, a couple hours later at 4am I see this video, well, I also have some punk, rock, rnb and trap influences in my sound, even pop however this is very interesting idea, it might be God giving artists ideas each "cycle", I am just conspirating at this point however..
I agree with you but the cycle is becoming randomized everyone is doing whatever they want whenever they want like early 2000s pop punk sound is being implemented more and more these days and then the next week we just flash right back to the 70s then the next week we jump to the 90s it is a cycle for sure but the cycle is being randomized
Born in the 80’s and loved that type of music.. 30 years later the cycle comes around… Another 10 years pass and the cycle ends… Now we are entering the 90’s influenced cycle… I feel old 😭
I like your beat but, IDK if that's the new wave. My nephews listen to rap music right now that has a little rock influence to it. I forgot what they call it but it started since the pandemic. Some of it has 808's in it and analogue synths from the 80's. I haven't heard any popular rappers on those type of beats yet.

You do know it always starts in the ug then eventually makes its way to the mainstream right???
Run DMC was doing Rap Rock mix in the early 80's. They were the ones who made that popular. Look up their songs Rock Box, Walk This Way and Raising Hell.
Thank u Navie I’ve been looking for a Paris Texas tutorial for a minute
I don’t see it going from 808’s to this style of Hip Hop. More so it’s probably going to go back to more of a sample based form of Hip Hop. This kind of Hip Hop will not get in play in the clubs or cars nowadays. Maybe it’ll work on a smaller scale as far as some niche off brand underground stuff but not on a large scale. Sample based Hip Hop is about to take over again.
Facts! 💯💯💯
I would hope if Hip-Hop was going to move in this direction, they would skip the stumbling through the "figure it out" phase, and just make DnB instrumentals with a focus on the rapping.
this vid is so good navie
EVERYTHING goes in cycles my man. Literally everything including life. Day to day grinds. Leaving home then circling right back. Music resolving on its home chord. Everything goes in circles. Politics=many tics on a clock. It's the real significance of the Circle. The earth may be a ball but when you look at it or the moon or sun you're seeing a circle. The earth cycles around the sun, the moon cycles around the earth. I could go on but it's literally everywhere.
Daaaaamn, pulling out that Voodoo! I see you
JShig! I am not cursing anyone with voodoo, I swear
zillakami's been doing lots of rap rock lately, not rap METAL, but rap rock. death grips did some rap rock too in exmilitary. you may be interested on listening to them. i recommend you dog boy by zillakami
i know the aim of your channel is based in teaching/advising beat PRODUCTION. However i wish you would have continued the "Music goes in circles" theme of topic, it was really interesting . is there any possibility you could make a full video on this .
i'm glad other people are saying it: this is classical late 90's, early 00's drum & bass. why is that weird??
6:56 sounds very much like concord dawn, if you ask me. check "uprising", their 2003 album, and you'll hear exactly the steps/elements mr d suggests on this video.
yay melody is coming back finally
been tapping into this vibe a lot recently, also been into sampling prog songs from the 90's
You should mention Yeat and Destroy lonely too. I’d say XXX was ahead of his time in this domain as well
VIBEFUL✈✈
I like this style of music anyway. im glad i found paris texas i was for that sound for years
It's an undeniable fact that individualism will always be the trendsetter. Like always, another great post...
im not ready yet
you can also see the influence if 90s rnb in the new underground rap genres of Pluggnb and Sexxnb which have taken over the underground the past few years and are becoming really popular
Id love to see a video on netuh beats type of beats like his crazier ones. Sorry to be so vague on that request i just can’t think of any specific names atm but any beats in that dark underground horrorcore type of genre.
you're so knowledgeable
Everything goes through cycles the pendulum swings from one extreme to another. Im a marketing student but i took one trend forcasting class in the fashion major and i swear to God it allowed me to see things I'd never noticed
So produce like the Dust Brothers on the fight club soundtrack. Got it
nice you made a grunge and bass beat (is that a new genre?)
I'm glad people brought up city morgue as somebody who's already covering this genre but I'd also like to bring up ghostmane, he has been doing it as well
🔥 video 💯
Damn, cooking up some drum and bass...
Daws hit a randomize button on musical expression. Now you can make whatever you want whenever you want to
this was sick
I agree with you but the cycle is becoming randomized everyone is doing whatever they want whenever they want like early 2000s pop punk sound is being implemented more and more these days and then the next week we just flash right back to the 70s then the next week we jump to the 90s it is a cycle for sure but the cycle is being randomized
all types of style but no real love in the music
Fire Vid
We need the Scary Hours video!
Alan & Ovrkast went Krazy on the Modern Boom Bap‼️🔥
Born in the 80’s and loved that type of music..
30 years later the cycle comes around…
Another 10 years pass and the cycle ends…
Now we are entering the 90’s influenced cycle…
I feel old 😭
Im definitely gonna incorporate what I learned from your video but the bpm section is so fast 😭😭😭
Are you talking about Rage music?
That was clean
that just sounds like a completely different genre
I’ve been obsessed with this sound and been trying to create it but nO ONE is talking about it. So glad I found this vid🙏🏾🩶
it give me chemical brother - galavanize vibe! love it
That's sounds so cool
I need to hear the full instrumental tho 🔥
Definitely sounds like every game i played as a kid mashed into one
This beat is really sick, are you selling it or can I download it?
Dope... far superior to the played out "trap" sound
