Going through a hoarder's hoard and eliminating it within the span of what appears to be only a day is absolutely catastrophic to an emotional or obsessive compulsive hoarder. I really, really hope she received some long term therapy for this.
Do you know what hoarders do with empty space? They fill it! Unless she gets help it’s not just going to go away.. she put on a brave face but I am sure this was devastating to her. I’m proud of her but I hope she also gets the healing she needs to overcome the impulse to hoard again.
seeing them living in basically one room really makes me appreciate having a 4 bedroom house...
That 4 bedroom is enabling hoard if there aren't at least 5 people living in it.
@@idwtbam how about a 4 bedroom house with no furniture lol
idwtbaum: If you have room for your stuff, and everything is clean, it's nobody else's business how much you have or should have. Maybe you like living in an empty house, but you have no right to force that on others.
If they had a 4 bd house, they would just fill up all of them and still barely have enough room to eat, sleep, or sit.
My mother started hoarding after my baby brother passed away. She blamed herself, although it was not her fault. Prior to this, she was a neat freak, She was the most loving , kind, caring person you would ever hope to meet. However, my brother's death changed her. She never got over it. She also internalized everything and would put on a brave face even when she was unhappy. In the end, she fell asleep with a cigarette and had no chance. I thank God that our last words just hours before she died were I Love You and I Love You, Too. I tried to help her so many times and even rented a dumpster to clean her home when she was gone, but it only got worse. If she had fallen asleep with the cigarette and not been a hoarder, there would have been a good chance that she would have survived, however, her home was so filled with items, trash, clothes, etc. that she had no way out even if she would have woken up. She was only 56 years old. If you know a hoarder, please try not to judge them, as it will only make the situation worse, but try to be there and encourage them as much as you can.My mother was my best friend and I feel guilt every single day . You never know what you have until it's gone.
jbradt 99 so sorry to hear your story. God bless you.
There is no need for you to feel guilty, please don't! I hope you are able to talk with someone while you're grieving. God bless you.
I am so sorry for your losses. You have have my condolences, love and best wishes. 😃💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖🐴
The best thing for you is to break the cycle of guilt for things that are out of your control. You might find a good therapist so you can release some of the past burden you are carrying. Sensitive people tend to carry more burdens than most.
I am sorry for your loss. You did everything you could and I hope you don't blame yourself. I have a 94-year-old friend who lost her husband about 10 years ago, before I knew her, and I imagine that she was very neat and tidy before her husband passed away. Now you can hardly move in her house. I don't ever discuss it with her, we just talk about other things and if something happens because of all the stuff, that's just the way it is.
I like the way the guy says “If she doesn’t get rid of the stuff it’s gonna be a problem.” Are you kidding me? ITS ALREADY A PROBLEM!
He means like getting the authorities involved...
"Collectable." A nebulous term hoarders use to justify their garbage.
Or "you can't find those anymore".... another famous excuse from hoarders.
Or " the kids will need it someday"
It may be garbage to you, to them its precious, sometching they like and makes them feel safe.
Something you like and collect may be garbage to someone else, who dont care about that stuff.
@@NigarButterfly That still doesn't make it ok to horde garbage. Hoarding is a form of OCD that requires psychiatric intervention.
@@batfleckforever3594 no, i wasn't talking about garbage as trash, if that's what you mean by garbage.
Garbage is garbage. I dont think hoarders call garbage a collectibles.
In 2013 hoarding was identified as a disorder on it's own, there are different levels of hoarding. The last stage of hoarders would not throw trash away.
Jessica is a clean hoarder. Donate some of the good items and it was clean.
I thought she was a clean hoarder too. I hope they can donate because most of that stuff was good.
This woman is a hoarder, but at least, from what i could see her house is not filled with filth !
I agree. This woman is by far the cleanest hoarder that I have seen on one of these programs. I think most of this stuff could actually be donated, as she seems to take care of it!
I think she did a great job to get it under control in a day. And when you watch, you have to be fair. She and her son are living in one room. That would be hard to manage even if you didn't have the hoarding issue.
Maybe she would have enough to afford a 2 br if she didn't spend so much on "collectibles"???
the crazy thing is it can easily get like this quickly. I have a family member who JUST got their issue underway after YEARS of hoarding
There is no such thing as collectible VHS tapes. Even rare ones are worthless now. Nobody is going to pay as much as she thinks she will get for them. She might get a dollar for each one.
Not true. VHS tapes are being collected and sought now.
@@MimisTreasureCottage depends. Almost every VHS ever released is rotting in thrift stores as we speak, even the rare ones. If they were wrapped in the original plastic, that might be something.
After my Dad lost his Father, he started holding on to material possessions. I guess because they would never leave him unless he decided to throw them away.
In my culture we burn all their clothes but not picture and furniture of course the loved one has a proper burial. This way we won't hang to material stuff. Let it go and move one live.
Same. I have company scheduled to come over tomorrow and I need the motivation.
She's not losing her stuff--she's gaining a nice, big, beautiful space. What a difference!!
But the person doesn't change, only the environment. If the person can't change things will go back to what they were in short order.
I bet you it's back to what it was before.
it would be great to set up an organization where obsessive compulsive cleaners mingle with hoarders.
There is a TV show called Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners where obsessive compulsive cleaners clean out places for hoarders / very messy places
Haha oh man. There would be a war betweem them. Hoarders tend to get very defensive when people touch their junk
They have a British show that does this!
8/28/19.....The OCD CLEAN ppl & the HOARDERS would kill each other!
Not kidding, but I have both , I hoard , not to this level , but yes I do, but also cos I have OCD , all o my collections are organised and neat in boxes and drawers , but cos the cleaning part gets so overwhelming that I periodically give away stuff to maintain adequate space in my home too, does that make sense ? No? I understand 😔
It is so easy to turn into a hoarder. Clutter is hoarding. So After working as a part time night manager seeing that an ambulance cannot get into the hallway to get the person out of the room if they cannot stand. Has made me open my eyes. I lost everything before I moved into my apt. So I got carried away. Working on getting rid of everything That interferes.
At least it isn't filled with feces and vermin like many other houses
At the apartment complex where I work we have a tenant who has every square inch of space occupied by stuff. The unusual thing is that it is well organized as opposed to the normal pattern of hoarders. But it still makes the space unusable in any normal sense.
Its not dirty her house just cluttered and I have to say I have seen worse on some of these these programmes
yeah, if its not a fake setup, it gets dusty FAST.
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 no need for fake, there are thousands of hoarders out there and this is clearly genuine anyway
Christine Ogden: It wouldn't be an issue if she had more space. It's much more difficult when you have a small area. If she had packed and labelled the extra clothes & dishes in plastic containers stacked against the wall, and/or used shelves both as storage and room dividers, it would have been far more livable.
I feel slightly itchy. My inner minimalist can't cope with the clutter.
Hoarding behaviour is classified as a mental illness, and is something people do because it releves stress for them. If you go in all guns blazing and just throw out all their stuff then all that happens is they get more stress and hoard more stuff!
Be nice to have update she how she has maintained.
Just like my mom she is in denial.
Actually, this was not bad at all. I can tell, my father was a hoarder.
I get so motivated to jump up and throw something out, wipe off some counters/windowsills or vacuum, every time I see these videos. I am no hoarder, but do have difficulty keeping things clean. I have fibromyalgia, and moving around is difficult without pain. Because of that, cleaning baseboards and other things is hard. I am ready to hire someone to come and do it for me, and I think that for those who have a hoarding/cleaning/organization problem, hiring someone to come help for a few days is really indicated. I get overwhelmed also, when I see how much I need to do. I peck at it, but pecking isn't enough. I could do more, each day, and it would get a lot better. There is no reason to live in dirt/trash/too many things. Donate them somewhere. Let others get use from them. And get someone to come and help.
I've thrown out boxes and boxes of clothing and things but I still know what I've thrown out... I still mentally hoard, but at least my house is organized and clean now
I've taken pics of stuff that I've enjoyed and wanted to remember. Then let them go. Better to have a disorganized thumb drive!
At least she's not filthy. Messy yeah, but no rotten food and bugs.
One of the problems behind hoarding is the mistaken belief that keeping the stuff because you paid money for it, somehow keeps its value. It doesn't get your money back. The money is long gone and it's costing you more money in terms of valuable real estate space, to hang on to it.
Maybe they could sell it and get at least part of the money back. 🙂
@@svasianfilipiname6603 not a peed on couch.
she was probably a low level hoarder, her space didn't appear as crazy as some of the others on this show and she seemed a bit more willing to get intervention before things got worse.
I am totally different, I always throw shit out, give nice things away, etc.! I am only addicted to the computer which is what I am doing now, watching sick people!
angelfirelite 😂
ME TOO- OCD AS WELL. I GIVE THINGS AWAY ALOT! I TIRE OF THEM QUICKLY. GUESS I'M LUCKY BECAUSE I COULD NEVER RESORT TO THIS LIFE STYLE, NOT EVER!!!
😹😹😹
I'm become a hoarder because I'm too busy watching these shows to be able to clean 😂
Yes, after having a child and after several Christmases I noticed this. I've made a conscious effort NOT to be a collector. I can see how this can easily creep up on you. I now try to give gift cards instead of "items" over the holidays. Part of it is you've paid good money for this, and now life has changed. You have to let it go????? I just wish years ago, my family of the 80s- the 80s were all about materialism. Could have seen like I now see what the holidays can do and what they unfortunately did. And the sales ads. Bombarded with save, save, when actually you were spending, spending.
Love this channel! You guys are amazing!
"It's a lot of clutter." No dear, it's a hoarding problem.
Very good organization team. Stuff to some......security for others. The end result is so great. People are helped and are in recovery. Helping is key!
No it's hoarding alright
They are so proud talking about it
it starts at the op shop... the thrill of finding a 'treasure' .a bargain, its not an illness. its human nature, it relieves boredom, it s like kleptomania. its going out finding gifts to bring home, its just what happens after a while, and yes it is stressful, but where do you put all this stuff, just going grocery shopping, all that waste...where does it go///? THE BIN IS ONLY SO BIIG....KIDS ACCUMULATING YEARS OF STUFF, ITS DRIVES YOU CRAZY
Its a lot. But deffinatly not one of the worst cases I have ever seen.
I have seen A LOT worse of youtube/tv.
Mysel I have a hoarding problem too. BUt im learning to deal with it. but its hard.
RaveleijnRidder
What kind of help do hoarders get to eliminate these problems? Does this problem having anything to do with childhood problem of having to move constantly and having to leave so much behind?
Hoarding is a psychological issue with LOTS of underlying causes: abandonment issues, depression, unresolved anger, anxiety, etc. It can take lots of therapy as well as medication to help with it. My mother was in the early stages of hoarding when she died, and I can say that she suffered from all those symptoms.
I just read a very good book that delves into the mind set of these people - Stuff, Compulsive Hoarding & the Meaning of Things by Frost & Steketee.
I'm a hoarder too n yet I'm super imbarrassed to seek help. I've tried to see if they've got help in my area and unfortunately they don't. I'm a private person by nature, I wish I knew someone who could help me on their own
There are private therapy practices and since covid, online therapy has become more common.
She's just going to start again
Not if she gets help to keep it like so.
fiddlelab , sadly... most of them do.
You don't know that.....
ummm lets she play GTA V. it can cure this idiot thing tho.
The person has to make a pact not to bring things in unless necessary.
It's not so bad. She needs an organizer to help her. She doesn't have enough shelves. Most of the ones she does have are at least half empty. Also, a lot of the hoard is clothes. She needs to try on everything she has and give the stuff that doesn't fit her to charity. Then, if she puts her collectibles on shelves and in display cases, at least half the stuff on the floor will already be gone, especially if she gets rid of the empty cardboard boxes.
I’m addicted to eating food
There’s a 12 step fellowship for that, Overeaters Anonymous. You might get help there.
Look at the bright side, at least she’s organized hoarder.
Thanks for sharing esp the psychological part.
Overwhelmed is right!
I want to see more of that episode!
What a good sturdy bookcase she has standing there amidst all that junk and not a stitch on it. I just paid good money for two like it just so I wouldn’t have book clutter. Hoarders are wasters of good stuff.
I don't need much and don't buy anything. I'm a terrible capitalist consumer so they make up for me.
Yes...I think a good approach is to say we'll take everthing out but not throw anything away...make your vital living space...then put in your minimal needs...also seeing other hoarders stuff that is not emotionally attached is also beneficial...it can be a disease and people can be extremely sensitive about some of their things...gentle is the way...cheers
Good job Jessica!!!!!!!
This is clean in comparison to most hoarder homes. There's actually space to walk in, it's partially organized and there's no garbage. A very common hoarder issue is a non functioning toilet and a refrigerator full of rotting food and bugs.
I believe some hoarders are more severe in their illness and harder to treat. The thought of getting rid of something, even rotting food, is highly stressful for them.
Another common thing with hoarders is a childish behavior. They throw a temper tantrum or just walk away when confronted with getting rid of their junk. It's very evident that they don't know how to handle adult situations and conversations.
I probably be a hoarder, too, but I hate to shop. If I don't need it, I don't buy it. However, I had friends & family give me gifts🎁 in the past & it's hard for me to throw them away. I beg everyone no gifts please, that includes Christmas🎄 & birthdays🎉, as well.
Take pics of gifts, then donate. Best of both worlds.
Without mental health treatment (to address & change behavior and the reasons), there is an extreme likelihood this will return back
News flash, hon.
VHS is an *obsolete format,* NOT a "collectible."
Big difference.
Like vinyl?
Anyone notice the empty bookshelf? 🤣😂
Aww.. it's beautiful afterwards although I do have to say the son not having his own bedroom, is a problem.
how can you not be a hoarder where does the stuff go
That is what I cannot deal with. I can't help my mother...as much as I might like to. When she starts getting freaky and digging through bags...with the anger...I just can't deal.
That was a decent couch, they could have just cleaned it
Great, all I need is your address. When either my husband or I becomes incontinent I will know where to dump my smelly old pee stained couch.
After a few years, her house is going to return to its original state of clutter as the cause of hoarding is not addressed and treated, thus there is no point in trying to help her clear out all those items.
They did a great job. I hope she is seeking therapy for this disorder.
Took 3 days to unhoard an in laws place
I can't wrap my mind around hoarding
I have a disorganization problem. But buying things made me feel good. Until i start to love to fly. 💚
We love our Dorothy💜💜
awesome
I feel like its normal to have so much stuff nowadays.. people just have bigger homes so it spreads out..
No it's not
Until you loose everything because you overextended.
I have a similar problem. it really actually physically hurts to let stuff go. it is something in the brain that goes wrong. like below if they dumped all of it for her without her there it would be really really upsetting for her.
America, the most cluttered nation in the world. I wish them good mental health.
get Marie kondo over there
Looks like a pretty decent sized studio style apt. Hopefully she can keep the space clean and clutter free. She just needed a push to get organized and sometimes you just need to clear your mind then you can clear your junk.
It doesn't work that way. It's a mental Dis-order in the physical realm.
That's very true. It's definitely a mental disorder. Therapy for hoarding as well as other issues is a good way for her to start to see things differently about her environment, put things in perspective, and change some behaviors. It's a great motivator and can initiate a clearer healthier state of mind. Then she'll be more likely to get some things done.
What would you do with a bunch of tea pots?
I like hoard speakers, headphones, and earphones.
I still have my VHS Star Wars collection as well! Haha. I think I may be a hoarder of sorts. I have an insane amount of clothes and shoes. It's not cute either. I am being run out of my house by my compulsive spending.
Jia Drisdom seek help though the economy and retail outlets in general must love you
💕🐴
I just don't get hoarding. Why would anyone allow themselves to form an attachment to a piece of garbage? It's such a bizarre condition.
Mister Sarajevo I'm thinking it largely has to do with depression and anxiety.
Mister Sarajevo same question I have
I think it is a drastic change in brain chemistry caused by unprocessed grief.
I think the problem is, they see beauty ( or interest or value) in everything. I also think there is an element of security in the sheer bulk of it all; that they feel as though it's protecting them somehow, like a little forest creature in its burrow.
Sheer laziness. That's all it is.
At least her apartment isn't nasty!!
I have stuff, but I like it to be clean and nicely organised. I hate it when I can't easily get at what I need eg sheets of music to play. I think that if I were a wealthy person, I would not bother living in a conventional house. Oh, I might have as small neat home I would never actually spend time in, because I hate neat, tidy, minimalist type homes most like. It would be just if I had to meet somebody I don't particularly like enough to be on such friendly intimate terms that I would take them to the spaces that do mean something to me eg my shed, warehouse, we ork room, studio space etc. Which will always be cluttered and untidy, though not dirty, because hoarders are often doers, makers, creators, producers etc or they experiment or hold stocks of things they like eg scientific hoarders, wine collectors etc. If you are an interesting person, a doer etc, then this will invariably created some mess. I can spot a minimalist type a mile off now, after so many bad experiences with such types. And so, I ensure we meet only in special places set aside for any unavoidable interactions with such types. They never get to be in any spaces that are meaningful to me eg creative spaces. I do this partly because I find minimalist very boring and annoying but also to avoid any unnecessary friction because minimalist types seem to suffer from some sort of emotional disorder that makes them behave in a very annoying, aggressive, interfering, frustrated etc way, forever causing disruption and disturbing the peace, in their obsession with eliminating everything, ordering everything etc ie control freaking behaviours. I think they might be constipated and need a strong laxative, since they are so fixated on 'elimination' and they are forever complaining about the place being 'full of shit', which, to the normal, sane, balanced hoarder are simply things one needs in order to actually live life. Instead of doing what most minimalist do, after they have 'eliminated' ie just sit there bored, like stuffed pigeons, with nothing to occupy their minds/hands, looking for 'a relationship' to fulfil them emotionally because they are too dull and unimaginative to fulfill themselves, by doing, inventing, creativity etc, most of which involves 'stuff', whether it be materials, tools, machinery, technology, whatever... The sheer stupidity of many minimalist defies description. I once worked in a certain government department that advocated the paperless office and so all the manuals explaining proper procedures, how to do calculations etc were trashed with great zeal. But, then nobody knew how to do certain things when urgently needed and when the computers that were supposed to hold such information malfunctioned or it was simply impossible to retrieve it in a timely, reliable, easy fast way, as promised. Fortunately, I salvaged some of the manuals etc being discarded, just in case I needed to refer to them. I was the only one who could do certain things I learned from studying such discarded manuals. When others wanted me to show them how etc I just politely explained that it is all'in the manuals' they threw out and that now, it was for me know and for them to just 'ponder'. Or try your luck with impossible, slow, hopeless, malfunction g computer systems full of information. You can find out anything. Except what you need to know. I like manuals. I have many, on all sorts of topics. I only throw them out if they get superceded eg technology manuals, but things like machinery manuals or how to craft etc manuals never date. Most of what I know is self taught, from studying manuals, which proved far superior to stuff I learned in a formal classroom setting or even on the job. Such training is not always effective. But, supplemented with access to good manuals, well presented, it can be more effective, I found.
The woman has a big bookcase with nothing on the shelves! 😂
I have personally seen stuff like cat shit stained walls and worms crawling out a broken fridge in my depressed friend's home, so what you see on this video is not THAT bad.
I would need to talk to a therapist after seeing that.
If your stuff does not bring you joy get rid of it
The items she's not going to use right away should be placed in storage... The daily use items such as mail and clothes per-season should be placed in a wardrobe.. Those shoes from that wedding..can be donated to a bride or prom shop.. Its all about separating things in 6 divisions ....Then work your way to a cleaner home...or bachelorette pad...
You do realize that it's a mental illness, not a lack of education?
many poor people from other country need your stuffs
Maybe they do, your just not getting, the illness of it.
I think the best is to let a hoarder help other hoarders clean up their houses so s/he could learn the lesson.
Oh, so they can not only fight over what gets thrown out but who gets to keep it and take it home!
1 800 got junk is so fucking expensive I used it once when I moved 12 years ago never again they took like 50 pounds of random shit after I already filled a dumpster and charged me over 200 bucks the dumpster was 400 with a 2 ton limit I'm sure that pickup was thousands I'm not a hoarder by any means but I can see how things can get out of control if you never throw anything AWAY
does her house only have one room ??? what about the bedrooms , etc why is she sleeping up against the tv unit ????
She lives in a studio apartment (sometimes called an efficiency). There is only one room, with a small kitchen area and a bathroom. Part of the room is for sleeping, part is for a living area, minimal closet space. Since her son lives with her, space is at a premium. No privacy at all. It is understandable why it is so cluttered!
alguien vino por alguna tarea?
I feel bad for her son. It seems selfish to me.. I just wonder if staying in counseling will help her tackle the psychological problems so she can do this for her son. Her son may need a bit of help as well. I think it would be great if they could stick together for the problem. Just, please, don't put stuff in your son's area. He may see it as an insult to his person.
I hoard air I try to breathe it all the time. And if I get rid of any. I become lightheaded and out of breath am I ocd?
Kenneth see no you are not a hoarder because you exhale the same amount as you inhale. Not hoarding just breathing

Thanks I was beginning to worry
Happy Horse thanks I was beginning to worry. Does that mean that I am a throwaway person bring air in just to get rid of it landfills are filling up

she's a hoarder but at least she doesn't have mold all on the floor and she actually has somewhere to walk through.
It's "not a huge deal"? Are YOU seeing the same thing WE'RE seeing . . .?
YEAH WE SEE IT AND IT IS A BIG DEAL! FIRE, SICKNESS, FALL DOWN AND QUALITY OF LIFE. EXPLAINING THIS IS BAFFLING TO ME. HELLO, SHE HAS A KID AND IF NOT, IT'S TOO MUCH.
A: no.
lol
show them photos.
that might help
Bring in the guards from any Big House to cut the bullshit. They will clean it out. That guy needs to run run like the wind she will do it all over again unless she gets counseling and learns to clean up.
I believe there was a better idea, they should have leased a small shop for her, for like 3 or 6 months, and called it "Hoarder", where she could put those items for sale at affordable prices. I bet if people knew her story, they would have been interested to buy. Plus, it would have avoided her the shock of giving away all the the stuff she loved at once and made her some money.
I suspect showing any interest in her "Precious" would just make her believe in their having real value even more and she would want to promptly take them all back home.
In bed thoroughly depressed. Want to tidy my room but its overwhelming😳
I know how that feels. All you have to do, is do one thing at a time. I do laundry one day, then pick up trash the next and organize. The next day I vacuum and wipe stuff down. If my depression isn't bad and I have the energy, I can do multiple things in one day, or even get a whole room squared away. It's hard but you can do it.
Stuff, vs life. I was honest with my mom (who's a hoarder), and gave her the hard truth that she didn't want to hear (that it's literally best to throw EVERYTHING out besides her 1 cat *fortunately she's not an animal hoarder, just a hoarder in general* and START OVER). She's like "I can't throw my life away!!!" (BUT HER STUFF IS THE ONE THING PREVENTING HER FROM HAVING A LIFE, getting rid of the stuff doesn't throw her life away, she's throwing it away by having stuff). I hate to say it, but I actually hate my mom because of this. I grew up in a shit environment (hoard filled home) and that is NOT a good foundation for ANYONE (let alone a teenager) to go through. Her hoarding started after my dad divorced her, so around 12 years old she started accumulating stuff. Made my life a living hell and caused damage to my physche that is still with me to THIS DAY (@ 32 YEARS OLD!!!)
...and where I struggle with not hating my mom for this is *HER COMPLETE UNWILLIGNESS TO GET HELP*
That wasn't hoarding that was collecting with style.........A mere amateur,
Looks like my Mom. SHe''s not that cluttered but she can't let go of anything damn thing. I've had enough
maybe they find free space scary? and feel safer hidden behind this clutterwall of protection?
كلكم تناقشون هذا الموضوع من سنوات

....why didn't they recycle (the paper) and donate.....
mysticalmidnightmask the items they get rid of has a lot to do with sanitary issues. they clearly said her couch smelled like urine. That is not a good sign that anything kept!
She has a child a child deserves to have a safe clean clutter free home where friends can visit and play there was no ROOM to have a proper childhood in this hoarder home
Why why why? They don't have friends! I think so!! Why why why
Her son has no room to put his stuff...
