    My dad used to catch snook in rivers in the winter on Bang O Lures. I see 5" versions online but not bigger ones. I remember that the hooks rusted out quickly and weren't strong enough for heavy drag. But they get bit.

    Amazing how much you’ve vested into understanding how all the lures work. I wonder if the actual manufacturers put that much into them.

      @@EngineeredAngler I custom paint baits myself and created lots of different rigs and different stuff. But never actually tried to create my own swim bait or hand carve a plug. Will do so maybe this winter. Been making baits and rigs for 3 decades+.

    I just stripped, airbrushed, and clear coated an old AC shiner 6.5" that looks identical to that Rapala, it was my late fathers, it was sitting in an old tacklebox for the last 20+ years

    Big chuckle at the end with "dropped the go pro."
    I bet you could rig up a lanyard to prevent that from happening again but who knows you might find some treasure at the bottom of the lake or even solve the Jimmy Hoffa case.
    Also I feel you on the end of project anxiety. I've messed up so many lures on the final coating stage it's not even funny. It's embarrassing how many epoxy coated lures have my "signature" finger print because I wasn't patient enough to let it dry completely before touching it. UV resin has been a total game changer from two part epoxy resin but sometimes I can even screw that up. TMT syndrome (too many thumbs).

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  3 роки тому

      I can totally relate. BTW I put a lanyard on the go pro right after my little snorkel session.

    Is it possible to create a minnow or crankbait that casts as good as a weightshift but with only lead inside?

    When you showed the original lure i said rapala, right away. Guess not 😂 i dare to say they have copied the rapala shape tho. Rapala been around since romans almost 🙈 awsome film. Things you dont think of making a lure i recon, volumes, angles, weight etc. Great to watch

    Carving this direction, the wood grain would possibly lead your knife deaper into the wood than you like, or make it crack along the grain.

    Nice one Franco! Thanks for the details on how you reverse-engineered the design. I like the stick baits but find the balsa ones to be too light so I'll be making some up out of heavier woods like basswood, cedar and poplar.

    This is awesome and a great way for beginner lure makers to get into the hobby. It goes over every detail needed to be able to replicate lures that they may have good luck with without trying to figure out their own shapes. Also, you are crazy diving into that lake when you've shown us the alligators in there that have followed you in your boat! That GoPro would have been gone!

    What about weight of glue between laminations

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  2 роки тому

      The thing to focus on is the specific gravity of whatever you are putting on, paint, clear coat, glue, whatever. If the specific gravity is between 0.9 to 1.15, don't worry about it. Otherwise you'll be doing some calculations. Good luck.
