- Getting started with formatting your manuscript and cover can be a little daunting at first. What is bleed? What margins do I need to use for publishing on Amazon KDP? How do I set-up my cover?
Well, worry no more!
In this walkthrough I'll take you through how to format your manuscript for uploading to Amazon KDP... we'll go through the bleed settings, including how to allow for edge-to-edge printing, look at the margin settings, and also look at how to go about the right settings for your book cover.

As a newbie in writing industry and self publishing i am so confused..but you videos help me a lot 🎉 thanks for making this video 📸
Excellent information ‼️👏‼️👏
Very clear and useful, thank you
Great video. When creating my first book I set the Page Turn Direction to Right to Left because that seemed logical - but wrong. Had to redo it 🤣
Happens to the best of us :D
Very good explanation
Thank you :)
Big help
❤ Thank you
I've been struggling with the margin settings issue for a long time. After watching your sharing, I finally understand how to solve my problem. Thanks for sharing, thank you.
I have a question. In a typical coloring book, each page with an illustration has a blank page at the back. How should I set up my formatting to achieve this result when the book is printed?
@Foncomic ie a blank page behind the coloring page? Just leave a blank page in between :)
@@selfpublishingempire Oh, I understand now. Thank you very much for your response.
Hi. Nice video! ❤
But i try to understand and i am feeling like i have 2 right ears and 2 left eyes, that's why i don't get it.
But anyway, your video is very good and helpful.
I need some help if you can give me some infos:
My Children's book is illustrated and 32 pages paperback 8.5 × 11. I received the "classic poem" from KDP "...add 0,125 and 0,25 etc".
So, can i do all these changes on Word? If so, how? Do you have any video to help us step by step?
Thank you for your video 🙂! So I ran into a problem whereby I set up my book in Book Bolt with bleed, but now figured I want to change it to NO bleed. I was told by Book Bolt that I cannot change it after setting it up. My question is will it matter when I upload to Amazon KDP? I have about an inch border all the way around I think.
If it's not too much of a hassle I'd not risk it and copy and paste everything into a new, correctly formated manuscript.
What should I do next and resolve this suspension matter?
Hi sir what should we reply to kdp for publishing rights you do not have? If we not reply within 5days they will send suspended email ...but if we want to solve it do I unpublished it by myself or apologize it ? Any solution please help
have you done a video on which program to use to create the manuscript?
Not specifically as it depends so much on what type of book you'd like to create. If it's design heavy Canva is your free option, Book Bolt is your affordable paid all in one option, and the Adobe package (InDesign specifically) is your more premium paid package. If you're interested in those check the links in the description :)
@@selfpublishingempire thanks! i was hoping to use apple keynote as i like how it looks but wasn't sure how it translates over to kdp but ill look into it.
@@CorinneSegura As long as you can export the manuscript in the correct format and specs you can pretty much use whatever software you like :)
@@selfpublishingempire ok, thank you
Thanks! Pity you didnt tackle 300+ pages too... Struggling with that...
Hopefully the chart on Amazon's page here can help with the settings: kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/GVBQ3CMEQW3W2VL6
@@selfpublishingempire Thanks. Keep m coming. I'll probably have to do a test upload to kdp also for the double page views (using Canva, which cannot do this).
Hi. Thanks for the Awesome Video. i have a Query.. Can i Have KDP account and Amazon associates or Merch by Demand account with the Same email Id..??
is there any policy issues with amazon, if i have different types of account with "same email Id"..?
I'm sure you'll be fine, as long as you don't have two KDP accounts.
I am new to KDP too, and I want to know how long it took to publish your first manuscript, after all your editing, proofing, and formatting was done?
As in how long it took amazon to approve it?
@@selfpublishingempire No. I mean, from the time you had finished writing it, but had nothing else set up yet, i.e. cover, KDP account, marketing, research etc. was all still required before it go "LIVE".
@@forthegood_za Ah ok! So my first manuscript was my book 'Watchers'. It probably took about 2 weeks for the cover, 1 day to create my Amazon account, 1 day to upload it to Amazon KDP (my first time so I watched videos on how to do that properly). Before clicking publish I also requested a proof copy, which took about 1 week to arrive.
So for my first book maybe 1 month? But now, it's probably 1 day as I know what I'm doing :)
What do you use to write the manuscript of your books? I am currently righting a guide book and am using word to write the contents of my guide, is this ok?
Yeah word is fine especially for high content books
Hi, did you notice that your Bleed settings at 5:15 is wrong? You wrote 6.125 and 9.25????? however, you wrote and said earlier that the settings for your Bleed should be adding 0.125 to both the height and the width.
I think that's still correct? As it's 0.125 on the 3 outside edges (remember the inside edge doesn't need anything adding - so it's 0.125 width and 0.25 height added)
Width 0.25 and height 0.125, for bleeds, or 0.125 for both? 5:14 has contradicting calculations, or am I missing something?
Having said that, if you could help, I'm in the dark!
I am using Word. I want my book to be 7 x 10 inches with bleeds = 7.125 x 10.25.
Which of the two do I place:
*in my Word Set up?
*in the second page (Paperback content) from my Bookshelf on KDP: 7 x 10 or 7.125 x 10.25??
*for Width and Height calculating the cover template to place on Canva??
If it helps any, my manuscript has 0.65'' top, bottom, right and left, and gutter 0.63'' and using mirror margins on my Set up Page.
Thank you.
no, for Width 0.125 and for height 0.125 for top and 0.125 for bottom, so 0.25. for the margins I still did not understand myself, I am still looking, the margins boxes are not even included in Adobe illustrator
@@niksyan Thanks but I think you didn't press Read more.
Can you tell me that my kdp account is suspended today after publishing two books only they are saying books are not at parameter?
Sorry to hear that! What did Amazon say was the reason? I believe what you can do is dispute it to the email address you received.
It’s seems no matter what video I watch I can’t get this right
What are you struggling with specifically?
What app is this you are using ? Can you post a link
Im using adobe indesign for formatting, but you can use Canva (free option) as well
@selfpublishingempire thank you iv used canva but im not sure how to do the gutters and margins for that .
where do you enable the margins option in Adobe illustrator? I use that. The bleed option is already there but not the margins four boxes@@selfpublishingempire
@@niksyan Not sure on illustrator, unfortunately!
Your video is excellent you are very clear in your visuals or outstanding. However you say absolutely nothing about gutters and how to set them. It’s the piece that I don’t understand how you come up with a certain number. I understand gutters in general but I’m not sure how I come up with a number. Please help if you can.
Thank you! And that's because they're set based on the page length of your book
.375” for 24-150 pages
.5” for 151-300 pages
.625” for 301-500 pages
.75” for 501-700 pages
.875” for 701-828 pages
Thank you so much ! I honestly believe I never seen this particular set of metrics before. I’m very familiar with what KDP provides as a chart with numbers for margins within without bleeds. But I honestly don’t remember the mention even of gutters. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
