Yesterday, I bought the Action 3 adventure pack and came home, happy with my purchase. Then I watched your video. I hadn't broken the sealed wrapper on the package, so I went straight back to the shop this morning and upgraded to the Action 4 pack. When I'm riding my bike or running, I'm going between bright daylight and shadow, and what made my mind up was the huge difference in low light performance that you show in the video. One other point I learned is that the GPS remote control only works with the Action 4. Thanks very much. I would have been really unhappy if I'd seen your video only after I'd opened the package.
There’s nothing like that feeling of buying something and then realising that you made the wrong choice and can’t take it back, so I’m glad the video helped in time 🙌🏾
Great video. It helped me in deciding to stick with my Action 3. The differences between Action 3 & Action 4 are negligible for me. Much thanks Tamara 🙂
I upgraded to the Action 4 because Davinci Resolve 19 Beta has included the DJI DLog M to Rec 709 lut. You can assign the DJI lut immediately after importing clips into DR’s Media Library. This means very little color correction needed with reasonably well exposed video clips. The same is true with DLog M clips taken with DJI’s Mini 4 Pro. Minimal post color work from DJI products to Davinci Resolve are finally here.
Obrigada pelas dicas, estava pensando na edição. Acredito que editando as imagens da action 3 à noite poderia melhorar...mas como sempre é melhor começar de uma superexposição...ainda vale esta ideia?

i bought the action 3 a couple weeks ago.. i dont do any post processing and thats what i look for in the long run... just a great shot right out of the camera,, the 4 wasnt worth the extra 100 bucks in my opinion. and im not even going to attempt a go-pro with all the hassles that come with them nowadays.... just an fyi for anyone looking to get "any" DJI camera,, make sure your phone is running in 64bit mode as alot of newer phones may advertise 64bit processor but they downgrade the operating system to 32 bit for some reason.. motorola is notorious for this.. mimo will not install on 32bit phones.. i had to get a galaxy A14/5g with 4g ram for 80 bucks just to run this camera.. i think 4g ram is the cutoff for 32 bit OS,, but i would double check your phones with a phone info program before you buy these cameras.. 64bit processor does not always mean 64bit OS.. took me a week to figure this out with some headaches getting there,,
I got the action 3 at the beginning of the summer and I am very happy with it for my first action camera that I use on the motorcycle .. I will wait to next spring and see if I need to upgrade, I find that they put almost 2 upgrade a year maybe I will wait for action 5. I am looking at the set-up for the audio and the action 3 is ok , even under the helmet with a 3.5 micro adapter , good comparation and video .
Seems to me adding sharpness & noise reduction settings would be an easy firmware update for the Action 3 and I hope DJI will do this in the future. I was really impressed with the low light footage on the Action 4 and if money was no object I would probably upgrade but for now I'm happy with the Action 3
don't forget that the physical sensor is bigger on the action 4 than 3 which helps in low light conditions (the pixel size is bigger for action 4 and it collects more light)
Nighttime sold me on going for the Action 4 plus image clarity and being able to have more room in post with sharpening turned off is a major bonus for fine tuning output.
The Daytime footage looks way better on the Action 3 and the Night on the Action 4. Sigh.. why can't one camera do it all. Have you noticed any difference on overheating during hot temperatures? I've heard the Action 3 is better with that?
It's odd that the Action 3 seems so much brighter in the daytime than the 4. That night scene was a huge difference though. The Action 4 looked great in low light. Not just passable, but really usable footage. I wonder if a small Ev bump up in the 4 would help in the daytime. I see that when the HDR is engaged it's closer in brightness, as in darker. I think an EV bump may be the solution. That's been my issue with the Action 2, I think it looks dark on standard settings. Will you be doing an Hero 12 comparison too?
@@TamaraGabrielUK Do you use the Go3 much? I've been considering getting one. I'm just really struggling with the lack of 4K, but the form factor is kind of a game changer. As i was looking for action cameras, I had totally decided on another brand before i saw your video. I'm getting the action 3 after seeing this, it looks decently better for the price i was about to spend on the other camera! i've been looking at something to document hikes/dog sports/dog training that's smaller than a phone and i can dedicate storage to, this looks great! I really appreciate the comparisons being side by side and the indepth reviews of both differences.
Nice comparison. I have the 3 and was tempted to add the 4, but the difference is near on nothing. Other than the low light with the 4 which was so impressive. So I’d have to ask myself how much would I shoot in low light. It’s very impressive but I don’t think it justifies a purchase if you I already have the 3.
I'd Wish you'd used it for some action recording ;) - anyone has feedback on stabilization? smoothing out the video, does it get blurry? - I want it for MTB singletrack and offroad motorcycle trips. I am DONE with Gopro.

Thank you for the comparison. The audio without the external microphones was still quitegood. It seemed to me that the 3 had a little more brightness, but slightly less quality than the 4, but the 4 was great for the lower light, night shooting.
I love your reviews, very good presentation of material and comparison, thank you Tamara! I don't speak English well, but your speech is so clear and understandable. I'm really looking forward to the GP12 review, especially the comparison of the new HDR mode and the standard one
I have the gopro 9. before i make a video i have to wait at least 3 minutes after turning it on from cold. then do a test video to see if the audio is still making this popping sound. been dealing with that since new. other things i hate is menu and the touch screen, low light sucks on the 9. was thinking about getting a new cam. will not get another gopro. the low light on this osmo 4 looked really good.
Excellent comparison. Thank you. I don't currently have either of these action cameras but your video has made me think that the 3 is perfectly acceptable for my needs and that, apart from the low light capability, the 3 gave more pleasing results IMHO.
Thanks Tamara. You helped me to decide. Although preferring the 3 for it's slightly warmer and better contrast in sunlight and bright conditions, I can see that the 4 is worth the extra money for lower light conditions, and with a little more texture noticeable in a back to back test.
Wonderful breakdown and great use of putting those camera's through their paces to show off their pros and cons. Helped me settle on getting the Action 3 as my beginner vlogging camera!
At first I struggled between these two models and ended ordering action 4. After that I watched this video. Thanks Tamara, because of your video I don't have any second thoughs about my choise❤
Thanks for the video. I just bought the 3 and am not happy with the inability to lower the sharpness. Side by side with my old GoPro 7 it shows so many "artifacts". Still haven't decided whether or not to trade it in but I'm leaning in that direction.
Very happy I saw your review and impressed with the side-by-side comparison. I have been shopping for a short time since I crushed my GoPro. I have DJI drones and love them, so I'm looking for an action camera. From simply reading specs, I couldn't figure out what the advantages were. Now I'm confident in going with the 4. Thank you. By the way, I saw each time when it was the 3 vs the 4. Your gray jacket was washed out in the 3 and there was glare in your glasses. The 4 had richer tones even in the HDR mode of the 3. Great review!
I haven't been using the normal colour mode but the 4 seems a lot better with that in your example. The new feature to pre-record/cache up to one minute is quite good I was using it to catch lightning the other evening. Audio seems noticeably better. This video does show the Action 3 is still pretty good though.
I have both of them, along with the mic and 3 of their drones. Really amazed at the quality of video in 4k that can soon be viewed on UA-cam, without the waiting that used to be had. The closeness of the cameras in some scenes had me fooled and I got the camera 1& 2 wrong. Was only on reviewing that I realised that I'd been lulled into a rash decision. Not got around to using the D-cine and then grading. Maybe when the Grandson who is at college doing media studies comes here, we can do some tests. Love the way you do your analysis. Best Dave
A3 seems better for day time, up close shots. Distant images seems washing up on A3 and the distant images like buildings 100-200 yards behind you do seem to have more definition on A4 but then as downside up close images getting too dark. Yes I agree A4 night/Low Light shooting seems a lot better (dare I to say, it's like a night & day difference) than A3... But for those who'd be mostly doing daylight hrs filming on good sunny days and outdoors A3 seems good enough option. So I say the answer of your question which is the main theme of your video is: "It depends"... Good video though. Thanks.
Thanks for the great comparison Tamara! Just ordered my Action 4 - despite the price tag being 1.5 times Action 3, solely because I am a fan of low light fpv shooting. Thanks for clearing up my doubts, cheers :)
Great comparison review. I'm looking at buying two DJI cameras for my motorbike (front and rear mount), and I think I'll stick to the Action 3 as I mainly ride during the day, not night time. Significantly cheaper than the Action 4 here in Australia, so I can't really justify the extra expense for those enhancements on the Action 4. Action 3 image quality pops more in daylight.
Thanks for posting. It is very helpful to have this explained in "Plain English." UA-cam seems to be full of "Beginners videos" that are explained in terms only a 40 veteran cameraman from the BBC would understand! Thanks again!
Hello Tamara. Did a firmware update fix the Action 4 heating problem? I honestly thought that the images from the Action 4 were slightly underexposed in relation to the Action 3 but this must be due to the better HDR on the Action 4. The sky seems more "blown out" on the Action 3. I would stay with the Action 3 until then. I like sharpness (not that aggressive sharpness) but of course, having full control over the settings is always much better as we are not tied to the internal settings that the manufacturer defined for us. If DJI has fixed the Action 4's heating issue, it's the way to go.
I needed another action cam with timecode capability, so I grabbed a 3, but I expect I’ll get a couple of 4s this year. Thanks for the guidance. Cheers.
I have been super happy with Action 4 Adventure Combo :) I mainly use Auto mode. It does a very good job. It is also so good in low light compared to Hero 6. A big pixels are what I always needed.
Wow. One of the best camera review videos on UA-cam. And I’ve seen a lot of! Well done ! At first I was thinking I’ll pickup the insta360 ONE RS but now I’m likely going with the action 3. Seems the ONE RS might be due for an update soon.
In your IMO segment(7:35)...how far away were you from camera's? Have you tried mini-shotgun mikes? As of right now, have OA-1/OA-3 & haven't had the chance to test Deity D4 Duo/Movo DoubleMic on either one....Yet!-lol. As for clarity/sharpness of this video, much rather prefer OA-3, especially in overcast/cloud cover. ISO...Affordable wireless lavalier mike set-up, as purse strings are Pretty well SHUT!-lol...Aloha from Hawaii
Great review! I was thinking about upgrading to an action 4 today, but to be honest your information has answered that question - specifically no, I'm not going to see much difference! I do a lot of filming from my bike, and I've found the HDR mode on the action 3 isn't that great for this, it shows a lot of grain in shadows that isn't there in D-Cinelike. Really pleased with the results of the Action 3 with Rode Wireless go 2 mic's.
I got the action 3 a few months ago. If it wasn't for the price hike, I would have probably upgraded straight away. The minor upgrades don't justify the higher price tag in my opinion. I'm going to wait a year or two and see what DJI offers then :) Great comparison video!
@@TamaraGabrielUKI’m most more likely gonna get Osmo action 3. I have the ND filters for it. Might get the 4 but I’m not sure if I need to get the filters for it as well
There are 3-5 creators I count for product reviews and tutorials. You are one of them. I get great value from your videos (maybe because I buy to much camera gear but that's another story). Great job, as usual. I have the Action 3 and while I would love the flexibility to shoot in low light with every cameras I have, I can wait for the Action 5. 😊
Thanks for the video. The footage of the Action 3 in daytime looks nicer than the Action 4, which looks quite dark. Can that be adjusted with some kind of mode? I'm new to action cams, so don't know too much about it yet.
I knew after a few looks then changed my mind and was right. First o thought the brighter one was the 4, then I noticed the other one had more detail...
Watched 2 of your videos today, gonna watch some more in a bit, I'm also going to subscribe. Your videos are to the point, clear, informative and very helpful. So thanks for all the effort you put into making your videos.
I don’t have one comparing the Action 4 to the Hero 12 since the Hero 12 is basically the Hero 11 with minor upgrades, so I only have an Action 4 vs Hero 11 video.
I've been looking at the Insta360 Ace (Pro) and DJI Action 4, but I think the Ace's are really expensive if just for traveling and it would be my first action camera. So then I thought of maybe buying a OA3 or OA4, but I'm really worried about the photo quality.. I'm scared I'll miss the 48MP on the Ace's and won't be able to shoot kinda good photos when there's water involved. 😩
I haven’t had any overheating issues but it’s not really hot in England. But even when I was in Dubai I didn’t get any overheating issues. It’ll differ for different people based on how it gets used though.
A nice well presented video offering a very good comparison, am I right in thinking that with the 4 you can use the bluetooth remote but not with the 3? Thanks for the review
Great video Tamara! A great video idea would be best settings for the Action 4 normal color profile in three scenarios : Daylight, Indoors lowlight, and Night shooting. I feel normal color profile is how most people are going to use this Action 4...I got my daylight settings right where I want them but I walked down to my subway and the image fell apart quickly. Be nice to see what your ideas on all around vlogging in normal color profile would be for those three scenarios.
Yeah, sure. I'm working on a best settings cheat sheet at the moment so I'll include those scenarios and also put a video together. Were you shooting in auto or manual?
Shooting in Normal color profile for now but Auto Exposre : 100~6400, Auto white balance, Sharpness: -2, noise reduction: -1...These settings look great except in lowlight and indoors they start to fall apart and get a shaky.@@TamaraGabrielUK
All the videos I’ve seen on the DJi action 4 seems to look a bit darker.and other reviews. I’ve seen against the GoPro hero, 11 the DJI looks darker. I have to edit to sort it out. Just wondering if you thought the same great review 🏴💯
Great video, I am going to watch it again later but for now have found out what I wanted to know about the low light capabilities, so looks like action 4 for me, thanks for a very good video,Mick.
Thanks for this side-by-side comparison. My assessment of how these 2 action cams compared is identical to yours. I still happily use my DJI Osmo Action 1 and for my purposes it's not given me enough reason to abandon it for an upgrade just yet. But, if/when that time comes, it'll be to the Osmo Action 4 of course. Well done. Liked and subscribed.
they look pretty similar when the action 3 is in hdr mode, could you please make a short coparison in a more extreme lighting senario like direct sunlight for example?
Luckily the price difference in my country is not much. I'd get the 4 for superior low light, and the fact that it doesn't have a HDR mode whilst still having better dynamic range. There is slightly more black crush. I noticed it most when you were sat at the park bench, in the shadows of the leaves behind you and in the shadows around your face and within your hair. Great comparison video. I actually don't need to watch any other video to help me decide between 3 or 4. Now it's between this or insta 360. I don't have any camera and looking to record my motorcycle rides. Currently leaning more towards dji for picture quality. But really like the footage capture flexibility of the 360.
Many thanks Tamara, I watched the whole video and I think you did a great job, I was actually thinking of saving up for a second hand Black magic 6k pro camera but looking at the quality on UA-cam of these DJI is making me wonder if I need to ? I want the low light capability of the B.M.P. but this looks very good to me. I don't suppose there are any videos comparing them tho.
Hi Tamara, sorry to bother you again but would just like to ask your opinion on whether it would be worth waiting to have enough money for the Blackmagic 6k pro ?
I am considering buying an action camera for my vacation to Dubai, but also for future use with skiing, hiking and snorkelling, and are considering the Osmo 3 and the Osmo 4. I am not an advanced user yet, but maybe my teenagers will probably be very quick. Right now the Osmo 3 is about half the price of the Osmo 4 in Norway, and the only reason I see to chose the Osmo 4 is the low-light quality on land an in the water. Do you think I will be satisfied with the Osmo 3, or is it worth the extra money for the Osmo 4?
How important is image quality to you overall? For me, I like to have the absolute best of what is possible. For others, it’s not a huge requirement. So I’d always go for the Action 4, but if budget is more important than the absolute best quality knowing that you’ll get something that is still decent, then the Action 3 would be the choice.
@@TamaraGabrielUK Thanks! I think I will go for the Osmo 4, I will probably just regret it if I choose the cheaper vesion. I see that Hero 12 and Insta360 ace pro can also be good options, but the Osmo 4 looks easy to use.
Very useful thank you TG. Now I'm really torn. It seems like it might be worth selling both the Pocket 2 and Action 3 to upgrade to the Action 4 + a DJI mic. Top production as always!
I thought camera 1 was 4 and cam 2 was 3, as camera 1 seemed brighter in the ordinary cloudy daylight. But seems action3 does ok in normal light conditions. Is an extra mic 🎤 needed? Or do both record audio ok?
in daylight the 4 was dimmer and 3 was brighter I got it wrong lol 4 haves a little more sharpness but for what I want to do I don't think it makes that much of a difference. The camera mic does a big difference so I would need a mic but do I need that transmitter one or is there a mic that can blutooth in? So many questions :)
If you get the Action 4 you can get the DJI Mic 2 transmitter and that will connect via Bluetooth ua-cam.com/video/yeitwCPVybc/v-deo.htmlsi=dA0olvCOKpOr_Np8 But if you get the Action 3 you’d need a receiver plugged into the camera to use the transmitter.

Yeah, the Action 3 is still really good. I feel like the Action 4 just has the edge.
Best review of these two cameras I’ve come across. Great content.
Thanks ☺️
i bought the action 3 with bunch of accesories for just $200, i'm pretty happy with it
HDR mode on the 3 makes them shockingly similar! Might go with the 3 for this reason!
Best Dave
Thanks, Dave ☺️ It seems you’re fully in the DJI ecosystem. Their products are great so I’m not surprised.
Would like to see if there is a side by side comparison between DJI action 4 vs iPhone series.
Cheers.
How does this compare to Go pro 11/12 . With regards to UI , battery life and overall reliability. ?
I have been super happy with Action 4 Adventure Combo :) I mainly use Auto mode. It does a very good job. It is also so good in low light compared to Hero 6. A big pixels are what I always needed.
Nice! It does a great job in auto.
much different from standart combo?
The Adventure Combo has two extra batteries and an extended selfie stick.
Seems like the colors are better on the action 4. Side by side it almost looks like the automatic white balancing levels are off on the action 3.
Thanks for the useful and clear comparison
You're welcome.
Wow. One of the best camera review videos on UA-cam. And I’ve seen a lot of! Well done ! At first I was thinking I’ll pickup the insta360 ONE RS but now I’m likely going with the action 3. Seems the ONE RS might be due for an update soon.
Thanks ☺️
In your IMO segment(7:35)...how far away were you from camera's? Have you tried mini-shotgun mikes? As of right now, have OA-1/OA-3 & haven't had the chance to test Deity D4 Duo/Movo DoubleMic on either one....Yet!-lol. As for clarity/sharpness of this video, much rather prefer OA-3, especially in overcast/cloud cover. ISO...Affordable wireless lavalier mike set-up, as purse strings are Pretty well SHUT!-lol...Aloha from Hawaii
the 3 looks better as far as morning goes and on a boat do they bot have stabalization?
please do overheat test
I'm amazed just how much better the Action4 is, this is as huge leap forward! - It pushed me to finally upgrade my GoPro Hero 8 :)
Excellent demonstration - thank you!
Thanks ☺️
@@TamaraGabrielUKI’m most more likely gonna get Osmo action 3. I have the ND filters for it. Might get the 4 but I’m not sure if I need to get the filters for it as well
I wonder if DJI will eventually do more frequent updates like GoPro?
This comparison is just straight brilliant, also love your personality. Great job!
@@p0werp0pster Do you know when the action 5 will be released?
Thanks for the video. The footage of the Action 3 in daytime looks nicer than the Action 4, which looks quite dark. Can that be adjusted with some kind of mode? I'm new to action cams, so don't know too much about it yet.
Yeah, you can adjust the exposure to make it a bit brighter. If you shoot in Auto then you can just increase the EV meter value.
Very good review. Did you use Dewarp mode or just wide? I don't see the fish eye effect.
Thanks. I used Standard.
Saved me £100. Can’t see much difference at all with the cameras so getting the cheaper action 3
I knew after a few looks then changed my mind and was right. First o thought the brighter one was the 4, then I noticed the other one had more detail...
Haha, nice!
Watched 2 of your videos today, gonna watch some more in a bit, I'm also going to subscribe. Your videos are to the point, clear, informative and very helpful. So thanks for all the effort you put into making your videos.
Thanks ☺️
I am anxiously waiting for your comparison video between Action 3 & Pocket 3.
apparently with the latest software update you don't need to use the DJI receiver with the action 3, the camera will see the mics without it?
So I’m trying to decide between the hero12 or the DJI action 4? Do you have a video comparing the two. Thank you. Great video!
This was a helpful video !! In this review have you any problems with overheating problems in both cameras?
Thanks.
It’s not something that I’ve noticed against the H11, but next to the Action 3, yes. But the Action 3 slightly overexposes, I find.
Action 3 is a clear winner ... great review!!!
Action 4 has a real life color and not saturated as action 3.
the better video quality on the action 4 really shows
That was very helpful and informative to decide for my 1st action camera. I would go for the Action 4. Thank you
Great video, I am going to watch it again later but for now have found out what I wanted to know about the low light capabilities, so looks like action 4 for me, thanks for a very good video,Mick.
When the sun (eventually) comes out again I’ll put a Short together 👍🏾
Yeah, the Action 4 is very easy to use.
tnx for the great review,, ill go for the action 3,
Very useful thank you TG. Now I'm really torn. It seems like it might be worth selling both the Pocket 2 and Action 3 to upgrade to the Action 4 + a DJI mic. Top production as always!
Thanks, Andrew! Yeah the Action 4 and DJI Wireless Mic is a great setup.
I thought camera 1 was 4 and cam 2 was 3, as camera 1 seemed brighter in the ordinary cloudy daylight. But seems action3 does ok in normal light conditions.
Is an extra mic 🎤 needed? Or do both record audio ok?
Both record good audio quality, but I tend to use an external mic when it’s windy, even if there’s a light breeze as I like to have clear audio.
@@TamaraGabrielUK ok cool! I just got myself the action 3 today! Was on sale 😊
I’ll stick with my 3 for now but I’m sure the 4 will improve with software upgrades, another great product from DJI👍.
Thank you Tamara! You helped narrow my choices down!
No problem!
in daylight the 4 was dimmer and 3 was brighter I got it wrong lol 4 haves a little more sharpness but for what I want to do I don't think it makes that much of a difference.
ACTION 3:
How about telemetry overlay? GPS?
