I started listening in late 1967, it was such a relief from KXOK. KSHE exposed us to all the great music of the 60s.I still remember waking up on June 6, 1968 and wondering why KSHE was playing classical music in the morning and not rock 'n' roll. Robert Kennedy had been assassinated the night before and they were being respectful of that tragic moment.
Being at the live broadcast of The Guess Who will forever be the highlight of my life. If you only knew the backstory. I still have the entire show on flash drive.
In September 1967 I arrived in St. Louis from out of state to attend Washington University. I discovered KSHE pretty quickly, but I didn’t know at the time that it was new. I hadn’t been exposed to that format, and it became my go-to station during my college years. I had some slight involvement with KFRH, the college station, and we once made a field trip to the KSHE studios in Crestwood.
I was introduced to KSHE when I was maybe 13 yrs old by my big brother. We were so close and lived in a very very small town. Couldn’t get the station where we lived. Had to go to grandmas house in New Haven Mo. I was amazed. Woke my whole world up. Thanks for this!
this is great , K-SHE was my refuge as a teenage boy 75' lived on the east side in granite city thank you Kenneth I wouldn't trade those years for a million dollars
TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO COMMENTED (AND THANK YOU!), if any of you have any old KSHE recordings on tape/disc from back in the day, I would not mind converting your all's KSHE tapes to digital to conserve all of our good memories! To return the favor for helping me, I will give you copies of all my KSHE recordings on digital... they go all the way back to 1967! So PLEEEEEEEEESE! Hit me up if any of you can help... THANKS!
+Kenneth Hawkins I have a reel or three. Someone was giving away some 7" reels, which I received, and, lo and behold, a KSHE aircheck was on it. Got a player?
Randall, Ken Hawkins here. Contact me at my email address at STLOUISHERDFAN@GMAIL.COM about those KSHE reels you have. I don't live that far from you. I'm interested in what KSHE you have... THANKS!
I have the KSHE commercials for the February 11, 1980 show with Rush and Max Webster (Valentines' Massacre, 3rd night added), the Valentines' Massacre jersey ads (with "Xanadu" playing in the background), the commercial for Rush's March 4th and 5th St. Louis shows on the "Moving Pictures" tour in 1981 and the commercial advertising the stickers that were given at the door with each ticket, good for discounts on Rush and Max Webster records at Streetside records, also from the March 1981 Rush shows. They are on cassette tape, as that was all I had to record with back then (I was 15 in 1980 and 16 in 1981). I'll have to dig around my tape archive and find a way to convert them to digital.
Thanks for posting this! I listened all during the 70s and KSHE gave STL a counter cultural vibe to a city that was depressing and lacked economic opportunity for the young. By the end of the 70s they drove us coo-coo with the endless Journey, REO, and other girly bands in heavy rotation. - Overall they made STL and the 70s groovy.
KSHE - 1967...they played Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant"...was the start of my being a faithful KSHE listener until job opportunity forced my moving to Georgia. KSHE remains in my brain the ultimate best FM radio...ever!
vickie gent Yeah, we did, can you remember all the other rock stations we had? K-SHE is the sole survivor. There was KADI, K-SLQ, KWK AM and FM, KXOK. I listened to em' all.
i owe KSHE and Radio Rich Dalton such a debt for turning me on to so much amazing music in the 80s. i am pretty sure i have stacks of cassettes somewhere of stuff i recorded off KSHE, but i probably cut off lots of DJs and commercials, sorry. Sunday mornings on KSHE were the BEST.
Grew up on the station and dreamed of being on the radio some day. Gary made that a reality when he put us on the first Seeds Album. Thanks Gary,Mark, Shelly. It was a great time when they would interview snot nosed local band kids like us and give us air time. Even let us can our own commercials for shows .Grateful , Keith King Missouri Breaker
Grew up in the middle of IL and to far north to listen to KSHE. So I'd always get excited when my Dad would take us to St Louis through the mid 70's to early 80's so I could listen to some "real rock radio" instead of the pop 40 crap our local station played. lol and I'd always try to sneak my "festive goodies" with me whenever I could. I live in Chicago these days but I discovered KSHE is on IHeartRadio so I listen to it all the time. :)
I started listening to KSHE in 1974, and that's when I discovered real rock! I'd been listening to top-40 stations like KSLQ and some of the others, but once I found KSHE, I never looked back. I have so many fond memories of driving to work or college and listening to the DJ's spin those records. I don't live within listening distance anymore, but whenever I get back to my old stompin' grounds, I tune in. Thanks for the memories!
I have some very old cassettes from around '73 or '74 but to the best of my memory I only have one short segment where they play their "canned" intro to a song where they say "real rock radio", but it's only about 10 seconds. I was still kind of just a kid back then, and only recorded a song here and there from their station. I wish I had more of those days, but I don't. But thanks for the offer!
This was when KSHE was great. They let the DJ's pick the tunes, and gave them freedom to play deep long tracks. Imagine 24hrs of the Klassic Show, 7 days a week, the only difference was that was the first time you heard the klassic song in question. Then there were the promotions....Kite Fly, concerts, BDay parties, and just about everything Rock ran through them. Too bad those days are gone.
@@painkillerjones6232 yes that is a problem. I'm starting to do battle with my own mortality. Something about living in St Louis all my life seems to have helped speed it along haha
Does anyone remember the hilarious gaffe/mistake by Gary Kolander on a Friday night introducing a Rush newly released album? He was reading an ad for a hair cut salon and yep..."for $2 you can get a haircut and a blowjob"??? THAT was classic. Friday nights at 8PM KSHE did the introduction for newly released albums. Even my grandpa asked me about that one..."did I hear what I thought?" 1981-1983 or about. Loved the late night albums. I'd be tripping late night and they'd have the sound I liked to celebrate in that full moon!!! Just great-KSHE. peace out
This really takes me back to KSHE's early days. The DJs back then were very laid back, and talked about their sister station in San Francisco sending them albums to play -- Grateful Dead for sure. And they had less commercials, so they did longer sets. I'll never forget the Sunday morning Scientology Hour (a sponsored show) ending, and the music started on the hour with Jethro Tull's "Aqualung" - first time I ever heard it. I was really awed by all the albums they premiered from Europe, from groups like Nektar and Kraftwerk. It really made KSHE a global sensation.
Great video! I went to high school with Shelly's son, Michael. Nice guy who also helped fellow rockers get great tickets to concerts. Rush comes to mind!! :-) I'm pretty sure the photo with Mike behind his father with Alex and Geddy Lee was the year Rush came to town for 3 nights in a row. I sat 3rd row the first night and 1st row on the 3rd night. Great concert!! So, if you read this, Mike, Scott F. says hi!!
That's was my brother's graduation year, but he wasn't a KSHE kind if guy. I'm pretty sure Michael was a year ahead of me -- 1981 PCH graduate. KSHE still rocks! The late 60s through the very early 80s were great years for rock and roll.
February - 12,13,14 - 1980. Announced the first date. Instant sellout. Announced second date a few days later. Instant sellout. Announced third date a few days later. Instant sellout. I lived 100 miles north of St.Louis and couldn't make it there in time (about 90 minute drive) to get tickets for any of the shows. We would be about 15-20 minutes away and K-SHE would announce: RUSH; SOLDOUT! We had no credit card for Ticketmaster. F@#K!
thanks ken.Great post. grew up with the SHE. Was there when first aired. Lots n Lots of good music first's. Good to see the crew. Too bad their format has changed after all these years.
When I was a Sophomore, my next door neighbor and I rode to Orange Julius in Northwest Plaza for a K-She bike ride. DJ's Joy in the morning, and Ron Stevens led the listeners to Creve Coeur Park. Afterwards, My neighbor and I rode a little further, to my grandparent farm. They lived on Hog Hollow Rd. My grandmother could not believe, we rode all the way to say Hi! She made the best flaky crust pies I ever had. They sold the farm, I think in 1975. She lived in Friendship Village for 26 years, Not far from the top of Hog Hollow Hill, where my mom worked as a teenager.
This presentation is certainly great but there was a bigger picture with a lot of real competition back in the day. They did well but they were not without stiff competition especially in the 1980s and early 1990s. And not to mention all the other stations and predecessors to this station. Ron Elz is mentioned and he was Johnny Rabbitt for a little while in the mid 1960s (and up until recently on KMOX). More needs to be mentioned about how all this got started with Storz and KXOK among others. That too. I have lived here all my life and loved to DX the entire MW band. Big faves were national; KSHE and KADI were joined by KAAY, WLS, WOWO and WABC, among others. But all gone now the FM band might just well disappear. The new rock format is the death of this industry. Now just another formatted radio station. Nobody has any individualism anymore, and so hard to find something good that’s not too offensive.
I have a maybe 8" diameter round KSHE sticker that I asked Joy to autograph for me at the old walk-up window by the drive-in, probably from around 1976 or so. No idea why I still have it. You can see one like it at 12:08.
Do you still have those tapes? If you do, then I would like to obtain them and convert them to digital. I have a bunch of other KSHE recordings dating back to 1968 to trade with you.
Kenneth Hawkins nah...sorry. Haven't seen them since the apartment hopping days...well over 20 years ago. If I did I'd gladly hand them all over for a digital copy.
KSHE 95....The Rock of St. Louis. It was the ultimate rock radio station of it's days. Nowadays it's just like any other mainstream classic rock station, they all have the same format, playing the same shit over and over everyday.
Great video! It brought back MANY memories of the '70's and '80's that had been covered up by the dust of life since I moved out of the area in '91. Btw, what became of John " The U-Man " Ulett? What about doing a video on the DJ's, of say , the first 20 or 25 years??
No handling fees. At least until Ticketmaster showed up. Now, you buy a ticket at the box office of the venue, and they charge you a service fee!?!? It was amazing what concerts a high school kid working IHOP could afford, and even take a date. MFR was the best though.
Love seeing my moms name at the end Grew up in that station! Tons of great memories! would love to find my comm I did for The looking glass as a little kid LOL
Gosh if only "old" K-SHE could make a come back, without all the talk and commercials, the fan base would be totally different as surely it has been poorly for way too many years now, sadly. Glad I grew up in STL and when I did! Best experiences, music, concerts, and times! Rock on!

Knowledge Clips I bought 666 a couple of years ago, because I hadn't heard it forever. I was blown away, how fresh and crisp it sounded. You would think it was recorded, in the last ten years. Lord have mercy
It’s to bad you can’t toon in KSHE like you could back in the 80s today I cannot get them on my stereo any more the signal is so week. And I’m only 67 miles from down town St Louis.
Does anyone remember a 'lead in' song, Radio Shoes by Bruce Cockburn? It is a instrumental by Bruce from 1981. Looking for any evidence of this being played as KSHE opened.
The early years of KSHE was so with the times that it exposed me to what was happening outside of my working class Catholic neighborhood. It's now kinda a crappy station.
I believe that song was One Fine Morning by Lighthouse ( the band was out of Canada) One fine morning girl I'll wake upWipe the sleep from my eyesGo outside and feel the sunshineThen I know I'll realizeThat as long as you love me girl we'll flyAnd on that morning when I wake upI'll see your face inside a cloudSee your smile inside a windowHear your voice inside a crowdCalling come with me baby and we'll flyYeah we'll fly, yeah we'll flyWe'll fly, yeah we'll flyAnd on that mornin' when I wake upWe'll go outside and live our dreamsI'll buy you candies made of stardustAnd little dolls dressed up in moonbeamsAnd everywhere we go we'll laugh and singI'll kiss you morning, noon and night And all the universe will smile on usCause they know that our love is finally rightYeah we'll fly, yeah, we'll flyWe'll fly, yeah, we'll flyYeah, we'll fly to the east, we'll fly to the westThere'll be no place we can't call our ownYeah we'll fly to the north, we'll fly to the southEvery planet will become our homeYeah, we'll fly, yeah, we'll flyYeah, we'll fly to the east, we'll fly to the westThere'll be no place we can't call our ownWe'll fly to the north, we'll fly to the southEvery planet will become our home

Christmas Card of the Air Waves was the funniest thing I've ever heard on radio.
Gary Bennett was my favorite DJ.
when you could get your concert tickets with NO service charge at the station in Crestwood. so many front row seats then.

Nice video. Thanks for posting. I like they way it starts with some Aphrodite's Child.
Knowledge Clips I bought 666 a couple of years ago, because I hadn't heard it forever. I was blown away, how fresh and crisp it sounded. You would think it was recorded, in the last ten years. Lord have mercy
No mention of JC Corcoran, who started there in 1984.

What was the song used to introduce KSHE news? "every morning when I wake up" "we'll fly to the east, we"ll fly to the west'

Did you know that KSHE in its early years played classical music with female DJs?
Colonel 2 Another UA-cam video I watched, said it was originally out of a house basement. It was the first FM station and was KHER at first

+James Tabor If you email me at StLouisHerdFan@gmail.com then I can accommodate you for your request of the KSHE Klassics you want. Just to be sure, do you have any old KSHE on tape? If so, then I am willing to convert the tapes, if you have them, to digital for free! Please email me soon!

Best rock radio station on Earth!
First SJ. Henry Gross canceled. Fleetwood Mac stole the show.
So the censored history of KSHE....sad!
