I desire to share a story about Foghat & how they came to be. You see there was this legendary rock/boogie blues act titled Savoy Brown. As happens in time some of the members still craved Boogie-blues while the other half wanted something a bit more mainstream. Foghat exists as the half that went mainstream. Off they both troddled on to success each on their own. They both did really well which is rare in the record industry. Thanx.
And yet this song is still full of boogie.
@@eboethrasher Previous members got a deluxe education in boogie blues playing for years with Savoy Brown. That type of education is nearly impossible to set-down once one's on the path. It's why Foghat sounds so completely solid, years & years of live practice...
Great song, thankfully we had FM radio willing to play the long version! The bass playing is stellar, definitely has some funk in it. As someone else mentioned, the song has a bit of a Grand Funk Railroad sound to it. Classic rock song all the way.
"...driven into ecstasy--climax--just explosion..." Yup, that pretty much sums up what it's all about.
he had no idea. just diggin the music aspect
Love this band…was able to see them 3 times…incredible live band….great pick….they had a lot to say with every breath.
Rod Price was one of the greatest lead guitarist of his time (FOGHAT LIVE 1977 shows that) . Lonesome Dave was also quite a good guitarist. Both sadly have passed, with Dave in 2000, and Rod in 2005.
As a wee bairn in the early '70s I remember just how ubiquitous the concert ads for two groups seemed to be: Grand Funk Railroad and Foghat. Neither were what I would have recognized at the time as being hugely popular from the pop radio I would hear, but it sure seemed like lots of people were going to their shows.
This takes me back to playing Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. Literally the first song you play in the game.
Fool for the City. Great album.
I love Foghat's first seven or so albums .... Grrrrreat💪
Many a baby was made to this tune!
I was probably conceived to “Brown Sugar”.
My favlorite album is Rock 'n Roll Outlaws.
This album got me through high school. Bong hit? This one requires a double bowl!
My first concert.
Foghat opening for Blue Oyster Cult.
1981(?) A long time ago
Great song and reaction
The group that powered a million teen-age boys' sexual bravado! When they first hit the radio, everyone assumed they were an American band. But their a bunch of Brits following the formula of the day,( American blues, sped up and dissected), to a strutting, sexed-up, slide-guitar classic! Peace, Love, Power-blues!🤪✌&❤💣.
As Carson would say, I did not know that. Still learning…
Makes me think of Dazed and Confused soundtrack
A wonderful song, it reminded me of the Montrose band's song "Space Station #5" when at the end of the song the tempo speeds up and the drummer keeps up with the guitars.
Hi JP. DP from UK. Baby, What A Big Surprise! ... that this band originated from here in London. Don't know much about them, but have always assumed they were from your side of the pond (like my song reffers Chicago). Like the slide guitar, but I think I would have preferred the shorter version.
Cool song. I still have a problem believing that this band was British, they did a good impression of the American sound.
Could be Grand Funk song.
@@Hartlor_Tayley aye!
@@Hartlor_Tayley Yep, I'd say a combination of Grand Funk Railroad and Humble Pie!😉
@@a.k.1740 humble pie are British too.
@@Hartlor_Tayley Absolutely!
Another classic. This was a big hit on Guitar Hero.
The album version is the ONLY version one should listen to, IMO. The ending is a literal eargasm. ❤✌
I'm going to make a recommendation for the first time in quite a while (yes, shock and horror!)...something from the same era as Asia from yesterday and in a hard rock vein, but infinitely better: The Prize by the perennially underrated Magnum, from their fourth album The Eleventh Hour. As usual, feel free to tell me to sod off. 🙃
About to take me a morning slow ride
🏍️
*WARNING: do not listen to this song while driving.* hahaha
This song is incredible. It's a rock standard. The interesting thing is bassist Nick Jameson: he produced the album since the previous one and recorded bass on this album because the previous bassist had left. As at the time he listened to a lot of funk, he brought this flavor to the band that became so striking that the band had to follow it from then on. And the most interesting thing: he is also an actor and comedian. He did series like '24' and participated in 'Lost', but he is best known as a voice actor, including in games that I love, like 'Day of the Tentacle' and 'Sam & Max: Hit the Road'.
This is my second favorite song by the band, the first being a not so famous one: 'Step Outside'.
Usually, whenever I have a playlist that includes "Slow Ride", I'll play the single edit. I usually get my "long" version fix whenever I play their 'Live' album, which is a phenomenal album; one of my favorite live albums. It's right up there with Thin Lizzy's 'Live And Dangerous' And Joni Mitchell's 'Miles Of Aisles' for me.
I'm not a huge Foghat fan, but I have seen them three or four times back in the day. Just never as the band I was at the show to see. The first time I saw them was with Styx, on their 'Crystal Ball' tour, opening. It was Styx I was there for. The second time was at "The Super Bowl Of Rock, Game One" in Chicago at Soldier Field in '77. The lineup was The Climax Blues Band first, then The J. Geils Band, next was Foghat, and the headliner was ELP. I was there mainly for ELP and J. Geils. The last time I saw Foghat was when they did a co-headlining tour with Blue Öyster Cult in '81. BÖC came on last, and The Whitford/St. Holms Band opened the show. I was there for BÖC, not Foghat. So I did see Foghat a few times, but never as the band I wanted to see. LOL!
You poor man, three times… ;)
I'm a big Foghat fan and would believe it? Only my second listen to this studio version. Great review JP.
The Live album version ain't got as much funk so I'm feelin a bit peeved that my lazy prejudice has deprived me somewhat. Bonkers really. Lonesome Dave & Rod Price.... and all the rest of the boys. Melodic soul baring sliding all over the place.
Don't Run Me Down.
Dreamer.
Stone Blue.
Wide Boy.
Burning The Midnight Oil
I could go on .
This was a fav on a rockin' 8-track set-up in a hot V8 filled with hotter high school girls toasted on beer 'n' weed.
Ah, those were the days!
I shall neither deny nor confirm.
Being far too young to have done any of that back then, and also being British, I cannot love this comment enough.
I graduated hi skrewl in '76... I was kinda-sorta dazed and confused. @@pentagrammaton6793
Check out their second album titled Rock and Roll. Not a bad song on it. First track is a banger: Ride, Ride, Ride.
Saw them last year. I think the drummer was the only original member. Still good. I always thought they were an American band. Now they mostly are.
We could use some Kraftwerk now since it’s right behind you.
Slowe raaaad…
Pumped Foghat many times out the ‘64 Impala’s window spaces back in the days of ether. When grrring about super loud music with better equipment than we ever had, I have to remember how obnoxious we were too. If that stuff was available back then, I would have bought it. Karma.
Anyway, great choice. You can hear the disco influence, you call it funk but I think it’s pre-disco, meant to get people dancing. ‘75 was pre-disco and perhaps the band influenced the beat and bass of dance music to come. Before disco I remember the clubs were opening up playing rock and soul and people trying interpretive dance moves to Stairway to Heaven, Bad Company, Queen, Foghat, etc. When disco hit the dance floor, lights and speakers were already in place.
single version rocks
Live version is the best version
Although it’s guitar heavy it’s really all about the drummer. Folks that played in cover bands know what I’m talking about. Needs a really good drummer.
I prefer Fohat, coz it digs holes in space!
Been eating the electrified cheese huh? 😁
My school band did a version of Fohat Digs Holes in Space while everyone else's was doing a version of Foghat. Sigh. I'd love to hear that again.
@@kenl2091 Love to hear your version again?
@@Owlstretchingtime78 Absolutely. I remember it as amazing, trippy, daring and one of the best tracks ever whereas it was probably an error-strewn mess that even Gong wouldn't recognise. Maybe I shouldn't find out which is true and just live on the memory. Bought some Camembert today just because I could (and it was reduced in price)
@@kenl2091 🧀 🤩
They did a killer cover of I Just Wanna Make Love to You
Not sure why this is so popular - sounds like a Led Zep outtake from ‘72
Lonesome Dave always reminds me of Nick Lowe, physically that is. You should checkout Nick Lowe.
Try All Men Are Liars. He has a great sense of humor and ability to write catchy tunes. He produced the best of the Elvis Costello albums
At college in the mid '80s we got a triple bill show on campus: Stray Cats, Nick Lowe (and his Cowboy Outfit), and Elvis Costello. Nick had a lot of Squeeze members playing for him, so they did a number of their hits as well.
That was a golden time for live shows.
For informational purposes only, the edited single version simply fades out midway through the song.
Hey Justin! To me the live version is ten times better! Are you ready to take a SLOW RIDE❗️❗️❗️🎵🎼🎶👍😎
such a great song!!
Great funky blues. Love it.
Foghat live is so much better - their energy and chemistry was never really captured in the studio.
Foghat was the heaviest boogie band of the 70’s!!! Thanks for not doing the horrible edited version that cuts off the whole ending!!?? So many killer songs, I just want to make love to you is awesome, maybe even better cause it’s massively extended, honey hush live is crazy also
This song is down and dirty sex.
Kinda boring. But kinda cool.
Foghat. My disappointment is outdone only by my shock, shock that anyone convinced you to listen to this. 70s schlock. SMH
