    Do I need to open a valve when first turning on the water? Do I risk busting a pipe if I don’t? I forgot to this year - hoping I didn’t cause any troubles

      Typically not but you can. Just pressurize the lines slowly. / open main shutoff slowly and then back-flow valves slowly if closed.
