The madman put Take That above Worker Placement! Love hearing from people with different opinions on the hobby.

Haha. There are at least 50 games higher than Worker Placement on the list. Madder and madder!

That is the number one mechanic he hates I hope
Edit: I guess I didn't watch far enough

I had completely forgotten about Scotland Yard, and we played it so often when I was a child! Thank you for the nostalgia buzz. 😄

I’ll certainly look into it. I don’t know how they function - but I’ll give it a go.

@@AdaminWales IIRC you add them in the description, like
      0:00 Intro

I enjoy take that. It helps games be more social instead of multiplayer solitaire. I also like catch up, because more close-run games are more fun. I don't like auctions of any kind partly for the opposite reason, that they generally reward those who have (if only confidence).

It’s funny - I’m getting lots of comments from people who don’t like take that. Board game players are so diverse in their tastes but they always seem surprised when someone else enjoys something that they personally don’t! Haha. Glad I’m not alone in enjoying a bit of take that from time to time.

    I guess I also don't like pre-game auctions.
Downforce and Five Tribes comes to mind.

I didn’t enjoy either of those games - but I don’t remember why. Perhaps the auction was the reason!

Man Five Tribes ticks the mechanisms you don't like.

Interesting. Which mechanisms? I only played it once, years ago, and I didn’t enjoy it. I was surprised because I usually love Bruno Cathala’s games. But I can’t remember what it was about Five Tribes which bothered me.

@@AdaminWales I believe the mechanisms in question are using victory points as currency and the bidding for turn order I think.

I don't mind take that in a game when that is what the game is about. But I have played with people who concentrate on only take that in a game where it should be a small part, and I do find it can make the game less enjoyable.

Take that is annoying only when there is kingmaking potential. I know there is the whole management of other people's emotions to take into account, because if you screw someone early you have to expect that they will screw you back at some point and that doesn't count as kingmaking, but that management is not something I really enjoy.

Finding gaming partners you really gel with is so important. If everyone has similar gaming preferences, these awkward moments are more rare!

I wonder, is a character selection at the start like in Hero's Quest a "pre-game auction"? The in-game character went through a number of challenges and decisions to ultimately be the role (fighter/mage) while the player is thrown into the game...
I think a modern design of Hero's Quest would put much more worth on the backstory or "Hero's Journey".
Are you aware of a game that specifically put a backstory/introduction etc. before the first auction to prevent a pre-game auction mechanic?
    PS: Thanks for your videos!

I’m not sure this quite answers your question (it’s not about auctions) but Roll Player might be worth looking at. The entire game is about developing the stats of a fantasy character. I believe in expansions you can use the character in some sort of quest.
Another game which springs to mind is Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. I think that one has a strong sense of creating a character and then sending them into fantasy confrontations.

Curious to know if you've played Mr Jack to compare with Scotland Yard

I really like Mr Jack, and it does have the feel of Scotland Yard - just for two players.

I dislike catch-up mechanics. Only good for children games. Pre-game auction is mostly used as an optional rule when very experienced players are playing, and I believe this can be a good thing then.

    • @AdaminWales

You are right - pre-game auctions are most commonly an optional rule. Generally easy to ignore.

I personally don't like games where one player gets a certain special role. Which undoubtfully comes from my experiences with Scotland Yard. We played it a lot in my family. And my sister always had to be Mr. X or she would not want to play it. Also at that age she was an insufferable little cheat. Which made playing so pointless because you knew there was no way to catch her , so why even try. Fortunately she grew out of this behavior
