  • From a small Italian community in 15th century Florence, the Medici family would rise to rule Europe in many ways. Using charm, patronage, skill, duplicity and ruthlessness, they would amass unparalleled wealth and unprecedented power. They would also ignite the most important cultural and artisitc revolution in Western history- the European Renaissance. But the forces of change the Medici helped unleash would one day topple their ordered world.

I knew the Medici were such an influential family of the upbringing of the Renaissance, but I never knew they were really that important and influential. Truly one can't discuss the topic of the Renaissance without at least mentioning the Medici. Thank you for this series.

Machiavelli may not have been given an office by the Medici, but he did get commissions for books by them. This is how we get the Discourses, Art of War (his own version), and Florentine Histories.

all throughout our catholic lives we pay the church for: baptism, anointing of the sick, confirmation, marriage, funeral and every day we attend mass (take note we give during the offertory which is the first collection and right before the mass ends there is a second collection to finance whatever projects they have). i don't see it as a religion, i see it as a business.

Well in the government, churches catholic or protestant, or any religions is categorized as business, which is completely okay. They need money to support themselves. Pastors and monks need to eat too. But they also build catholic schools, and that's how they make money, and they donate to the poor too.

    • @sutapasbhattacharya9471
      @sutapasbhattacharya9471 2 роки тому

@@somerandomguyfromthebeyond1821 Why was it sad - the Church and its Literalist Churchianity was a corruption of the original Gnostic Christianity [which taught the true Spirituality of direct access to Divinity within us] copied from older Mystery Religions. The Early Protestant 'enthusiasts' were those who sought to re-establish this Direct Access to the Divinity within us - thus Protestantism was certainly an advance on the corruption fakery of the Papacy. BTW - the Papa was originally the Head of the Roman Temple of Mithras [aka Sol Invictus] at the Vatican. Mithras was born of a Virgin Birth [a myth which long predates Christianity and refers to enlightenment] on December 25th. The Christians only adopted the Crucifix symbol in the 4th Century after Nicaea. Earlier Roman vases showing the crucified godman name the godman as Orpheus-Bacchus! Dionysus meant Son of God in Phrygian!

Visually excellent, intellectually this is a shabby hatchet job against the Medici and especially against Giovanni (Leo X). The quote about enjoying the papacy was written by a Venetian enemy. Both David Hume and Martin Luther praised Leo for his personal qualities. He was known especially for his wish for and work toward peace, both within the church and in Christian Europe. Hume said of him, “one of the most illustrious princes that ever sat on the papal throne. Humane, beneficent, generous, affable, the patron of every art, and friend of every virtue.” He knew the quality of the art he patronized. Like his father, Lorenzo, he was a poet. He could extemporaneously compose verse in Latin and Italian. He was a renaissance man. This sorry program panders to the misconception that these renaissance princes were just illiterate Don Corleone, Tony Soprano American gangsters. The reality is that they were complex men in a world of rapid change. Leo’s great flaws were to over spend and to misread the reformation. His great grandfather, Cosimo, a master of both politics and accounting, said, “I know the Florentines. In fifty years they will throw us out, but my buildings will endure.” The art patronized by Leo and his forbears endures.

I will quote Martin Luther to you based on my vague recollection:
'The pope is riche than Croesus...he should donate some of the money to the poor'
"The pope should stand up like the sinner he is, and (something about explaining what he is doing'
      And many more....
I would also like you to explain away the little boy, pawning off of church funds for their own personal gains, having affairs with women despite vowing celibacy, selling off visitation rights to the saints etc.

This series is very interesting especially from an artistic point of view. Its political and military grasp is too simplistic . In the beginning of the sixteenth century the Italian states are arranging themselves into alliances against one another. One side in order to trump the other invites the French king to intervene. France is not rich but militarily a great power by comparison with the small very rich Italian states. The French king has imperial ambitions of his own in Italy. This prompts the Holy Roman Empire centred in Germany and with Spain as an attachment to intervene in the peninsular in order to safeguard its local interests.
It is the army of the Catholic Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. that sacks Rome. It does so because Charles is unable to pay its wages.
The intervene of. the French & Germans shifts power from Italy to Northern Europe as the Italian peninsular is dwarfed by the military might of Germany and France and pillaged by both.

I am pretty sure it was covered up because of what it could potentially mean symbolically. This show always talks about how religious, and even superstitious, the people of this time were. If they found out that their "symbol" of wealth and the birth of a new age died a little later directly because of the very product that made it look rich (the gold paint), that would look pretty bad for the new Pope. I bet they were thinking politically in so many ways.

The Road to Hell is often paved with Good Intentions and vice versa. The corruption and self-aggrandizement of the Medici brought the Reformation and Renaissance which advanced human progress - just as the numerous Crimes Against Humanity of the European colonialists around the world and even the 1939-45 War brought about major advances in Science, Technology, Medicine etc. from which the majority of the human population benefit today - although of course the growing inequality within societies [with all the new wealth going to the super-rich whilst the majority get poorer] associated with NeoLiberalism can be traced back to the Greed inherent in the Capitalist Ethos that came to prominence in Europe with the Medici.

Funny how "The Prince" does not mention spending lots of money on art, culture and such, though this has political and military value by making enemies less likely to attack. It seems to have made the populace more likely to revolt, if such culture transgresses religious values. Wish Machiavelli had thought to do a chapter on it. Anyway with this Medici pope period, they seem to have come a long way from the time of Cosimo, when upon his exile he simply gathered money and waited for a recall. These two Medici cousins came back with an army sacking townships, and spent rather than created wealth.

I have a degree in both Reformation history and theology. I can assure you, that while there were abuses in the Catholic Church of the period, the explanation of Catholic theological teachings and historical events presented in this video are false, inaccurate and exaggerated. The soical, political and religious events of the period are complicated and can not be explained in a 55 minute video which has all the signs of biased and anti-Catholic propaganda designed more for sensationalism, than historical facts.

Rome was pontif maximus ruled or commonly called ceaser. If Apostle Peter were pontif maximus would he had murdered Apostle Paul? Rome is where Apostle Paul was murdered by order of pontif maximus.
