  • The 16th century tragic story of 3 young Medici women. The ladies were the daughters, and niece, of Cosimo I de Medici, the Duke of Florence, and later the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Although Leonora was a niece, she was raised alongside the girls from an early age. They were like sisters, and she was like a daughter to Cosimo. We start off with Isabella de Medici followed by her cousin Leonora di Garzia, with whom she had a very close relationship with. We finish it off with the youngest of the girls, Lucrezia de Medici, who unfortunately didn't make it past the age of 17.

Correction: At the beginning of the video (16s) I say Cosimo I de Medici, Grand Duke of Florence, but should be Grand Duke of Tuscany. He was previously Duke of Florence.

Thank you for this video, most of the attention goes to the male members of the family, so this focus is much appreciated. Isabella is one of my favorite Medicis, so I’m glad to see some love going her way.

Those poor women. They got the short end of the stick with their marriage. It's also unfortunate their parents and family couldn't or wouldn't protect them.

I had no idea how numerous they were! Also very handsome according to the portraits we can see. It seems like it didn't pay to be a wealthy young woman, given how
common wife-murder was. This is a very informative video. I want some of those outfits, complete with the jewels.

All of this is so interesting! I first became interested in the Medici family after watching a docudrama series about them, as well as a few short documentaries. I later learned that I may be a descendant of Henri II and Caterina, but have not had much time to study and learn for certain.
I am a member of an ancestral organization, so much of my ancestry has been confirmed, but when one begins to learn about these people and their fascinating lives (both good and bad), it still seems more like good fiction!

    Love your reading.
It seems the later parts of every dynasty develops corruption and bad habits. Compelled into marriage with men who turned out to be horrible. With disrespect for women a major feature in the culture of the time.
Leaves us wondering what could have happened if they had made other choices.
An aside....weren't their dresses gorgeous? I love the fabrics and designs of the period. And the fact we have portraits.!!👍
Thank you. Gave your channel a new follower.

Very informative, well done video. The Medici are very interesting. I only have one criticism, a pet peeve of mine. You repeatedly call them "girls" while their husbands, lovers, and brothers are men. It's infantilizing and insulting, especially when speaking of their extravagant lives, and misbehavior. ie:"He wasn't a fan of the girls' lifestyle in Florence."
As a historian, I know that women *were* quite infantilized back then, hence the need for guardians/protectors (even many cases where the 'guardian' was a woman's grown son) but we don't have to perpetuate their infantilization. They were old enough to be married, take lovers, have children, and manage large households and lands, etc, so they deserve to be called women or ladies. Or you can refer to their husbands as boys. Just be equal in your language. (unless, as in some historical marriages, there's a large age gap, such as when powerful men marry the much younger girls, often early teens, who were intended to marry their sons, etc.) I'm not a feminazi by any means, more of a language/grammar aficionado. Like I said, it's a pet peeve, and it irked me every time I heard it.

great video content, you might want to try and improve on your voice tone though, because its always around the same key and after a while, it sounds boring and will put people off. Elocution lessons cant change your deep voice, but will help you improve your speech and make it far more melodic. Currently its really obvious that you are reading from a text. Good luck.
