  • We take our usual on the cheap approach to diagnosing and repairing an ignition misfire on our budget MX-5 project car. Our (usually) impeccably reliable Mazda MX5 developed a misfire - running rough and losing loads of power.
All internet experts pointed to HT leads or worst case, the expensive coil pack. With our trusty tool kit and a handful of new parts, we get stuck in.
    Did we fix it? Indeed...

Nice video, well presented. Just bought a '90 and getting familiar with the bits will take some time. This helps. Thank you from Canada.

for me the plug at the back was filled with engine oil so I did the gasket and leads, spark plug in one go. I miss the proper silicone sealant tho..

I changed plugs and wires, but the "misfire" CEL didn't go away on my '97 NA Miata until I put fuel system/injector cleaner in the gas tank.
    Patient cured.

Update; CEL "Intermittant misfire"came back. I changed plugs, plug wires, and coil pack. Same CEL came back, but it took a while.
      Any ideas?

I am having the same issue, I've also replaced, plugs, wires and coil pack as well as fuel injectors. Were you able to find your fix?

@@leninduran1780 Now and then I get the “random misfire” CEL. I use my friends plug-in computer to re-set and usually go several months w/o a CEL.

A lpt: if the spark plug wires don't change the situation it may be worth the money to replace the o2 sensor before spending a lot of money on a set of new coils or AFM... don't ask my why i know that. Don't.

Why do you know that...? We suspect a lot of money has been spent discovering that fact...

I think its a good idea to put Never Seize on the plug threads; especially with aluminum heads.

my 2000 nb 1.6 has similar problem but only on hot start it starts just fine but imidetly the idle drops to about 500-600rpm and when i blip the throttle it finds the corect idle right after that and stays there but it's been getting worse lately since it even dies when i start it and don't blip the throttle. can you help me? I have a suspition that it might be coilpack but i hope it isn't i'm broke and can't really afford 300 pounds for an upgraded coil pack and i don't want to put a new OEM one in it either because the problem would eventually come back.

When the plugs are amber on the top part of the insulation, is it a bad sign? Or it is normal?

    • @SpannerAddicts
      @SpannerAddicts  7 років тому +1

      Hello Spiros.
It tends to be burnt on crud from the engine bay, so can depend on where the plugs are. The Mazda's are buried in the head (like a lot of twin cam engines) so you'd expect a little bit of it. It would probably wipe off with a bit of thinners.
These were in a shocking state to be fair. They do need to be replaced on a regular basis - I think on the Mazda it's every two years/24k miles. And it'll be a case of how they perform and old plugs don't perform at all well.
Thanks for watching, and stay tuned!
