    The gatherings you see are domestic workers having their one day off a week, mostly from the Philippines or Indonesia, many gather on the streets every Sunday to picnic, dance, exchange gossips and send things back home. Locals are really tolerant and understanding with their contribution to society. Many of the high-end streets like the ones you saw are even shut off for them to gather, which is quite a lively and unique scene! (Imagine Regent Street shuts off for that every Sunday!)

      Thanks for this information, It’s great to hear about the sense of community and support for domestic workers here in Hong Kong to gather like this.
      I can not quite imagine them doing the same on Regent Street in London! 🤣

    Im glad u enjoy ur time here!! Im a HK local and i always want to travel to the western countries againnn in all my holidays because im so sick of being trapped in this tiny city, or even being in Asia, and i really want a change of scenery, like people, architecture etc. Sometimes i watch vlogs like this from foreigners to remind me that I should be grateful that i born here! Enjoy your stay in HK! It's worth getting an Octopus travel card (equivalent of an Oyster card) instead of buying singles for each trip.
    There is a large population of live-in domestic helpers from overseas working in Hong Kong who typically have Sunday as their day off. On such days they are not compelled to stay in at their employers' homes and therefore tend to gather in larger public areas such as Central and Mong Kok to chill and catch up with their friends.

This is a place your ancestors fought so hard to become part of the British empire and your folks kept it as the "Royal crown jewel" for over a century! Maybe you are too young to knowthe ancient history of your own country! 😂 I recommend you watch Michael Portillo's railway trip to Hong Kong to learn more about the British petspective of Hong Kong.

    Thank you for visiting Hong Kong ! (香港) I hope you enjoy the stay ! The airport you boarded was The International Airport, I think? It’s the biggest airport and it’s the most popular one ! I live in Hong Kong and was born in Hong Kong, I think you’d be surprised to learn the history of Hong Kong ! My parents were both from China, and they’re quite old (around 55-60) so they’re not born in Hong kong , since they’re quite old ! (No offence) You should buy an octopus card ! Adults get no discounts, children get a half discount, elderly get a large discount ! bigger than children ! The MTR is very convenient since it’s the fastest, but also be careful since there are quite some fights outside in the streets, if you have children, take good look at them ! Many male kidnap them and cute their limbs and ship them to UK/USA, but there are less and less since the government in UK executed them, but still be careful ! I’m a child and my parents told me this so I wanna spread it to you lol.
    Edit: on Sunday, in that place where you are at, probably where my church is , oh yeah central my church, in Cnetral, on Sunday. The government blocks the road and frees it for people (Philippines and India) for them to rest because many of them are nannys, and I have one too ! Her name is Mary :D They usually have breaks on sundays, come back home at 9pm !

      Thank you for sharing your experiences and insights about Hong Kong! I appreciate the tip about the Octopus card and the MTR. I’ll definitely keep your advice in mind and stay aware during my travels. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment!

    You should had been entitled a free ride from Hong Kong to Sai Ying Pun as you took airport express. If you had bought an Octopus card which is the Oyster card in London, that would eliminate a lot of hurdles.

    • @wilkowanders
      @wilkowanders  2 місяці тому

      Ah, thanks for sharing this. Yeah I think someone else mentioned there is even an app version of the Octopus which would have been even simpler! I know for next time! 😃

    13:15 Once upon a Sunday afternoon, I was asked by a tourist with the similar question when I said that today was holiday. Because in Hong Kong, we call Sunday as a public holiday and some places will be opened to the public & some traffic restrictions will be set aside during the public holiday.

    11:20 Sundays in Central are pretty much closed off for Philipines domestic helpers, actually you'll see pretty much the same in Causeway Bay near the Victoria Park for Indonesia Domestic Helpers. It's not a special holiday but like an unwritten rule where the locals get out of the way so that the domestic helpers can enjoy their holiday. It's kinda funny display of a silly ignorance from a foreigner, and I don't mean to be offensive, please accept my apologies in advance for this comment.

    So.. those gatherings are workers from Philippines and Indonesia. Most workers are from Philippines. I have a worker from Philippines here right now! Indonesia knows how to speak Cantonese, not fluent in them though. Philippines doesn’t know any Cantonese, so I talk to them in English! (I recommend you to go to Taiwan. If you have. It’s okay.)
