I used to take steam locomotive train, then diesel engine train from Shanghai to Beijing for over 40 hours many years(40-50years) ago, now by electric high speed train for less than 5 hours! Big changes for travelers. You got a nice window seat and trip seems to be quite enjoyable! Great video!
With the popularization of high-speed rail technology, it has become very convenient to travel from Beijing to Shanghai by high-speed rail. Looking forward to your next travel video, Thanks!
There actually is a high speed rail stop under the Great Wall. It’s called the Badaling Great Wall Railway station. It is 60m below the surface making it the deepest HSR station in the world.
Thanks for sharing! That’s really interesting to know about the Badaling Great Wall Railway station being the deepest HSR station. Appreciate the info!
@@chen-h3r My father is Chinese and lives in China. I live in a country that here in the West is considered "the Switzerland of America" but I think that if we compare it with the Congo, that African country seems like a first world country compared to Uruguay (which is where I was born and live).
Just traveled on the same route two weeks ago and found the foreign passports can be scanned and get through which obvious is the recent service improvements to better accommodate the coming visa free tourists. China is constantly improving for better and you really can’t keep up with it until you physically experience it.🎉
actually there is no big difference between the 1st class seat and 2nd class seat. but the price for the 1st class is 1073 Yuan, the 2nd class is only 671 yuan for G7 bullet train.
First class seats are wider than 2nd class seats. It seats 4 people in one row in first class coach while 5 people in 2nd class. And of course, you'll get more leg room in a first class seat. I would say that's quite a difference.
Actually business class is the best class. I always see foreigners mistaking first class as the most comfortable one. Maybe you can try business class next time
Your video is awesome! I've followed a lot of UA-camrs, but most of them don't mention that you need to order and pick up food using your phone. This video could be super helpful for people coming here for the first time.
i love your videos, but as an expat living in China for 15 years, free WiFi is not a thing anymore. everyone use 5G, it like 20 rmb for 80 GB a month and it's much faster. ppl don't connect to free WiFi anymore. 😂
China's high-speed rail and government affairs are all electronic systems, and there are no paper tickets. Paper tickets used to be used, but they are now obsolete. So after purchasing with your ID card, you can scan it directly into the station. If you are a foreigner, you must use your passport to verify the information. If flying, still use paper tickets.
There is another reason you don't get fresh food from the train station. It's because real fires and high-power electrical equipment that may cause fires are limited in terms of safety. The train stations are constantly packed with people, so they can't risk that.
Beijing to Shanghai is about 1200 kilometers, the second class seat about $100, the plane is generally $200 if you do not get the early morning flight, but the plane arrived at the airport two hours earlier, Beijing has two international airports about 30-70 kilometers from the city center, the train station is near the city center, half an hour in advance of the station is enough. The overall arrival time is about the same, but you can save a lot of energy. So usually when we travel less than 2,000 kilometers, we choose high-speed rail because it is safe and we can see the scenery. In addition, Beijing to Shanghai has the most flights so it is almost the cheapest flight.
Good question, The train in 1st was £120 I am not sure how much the plane was, I decided I wanted to do the train for the experience of the bullet train!
If I want to travel long distance and I don't like to fly, I will choose to take the high-speed train because I can see the scenery along the way and it is more comfortable. When descending on a plane, I would feel uncomfortable ringing in my ears due to the pressure. Now China train network is the best in the world... ultra fast, always on time (98% of the time), no strike (If in France... so many strikes in France), comfortable, not expensive... Saw a UA-cam video somewhile ago where some Western 'experts' said that China would never show a profit on the High Speed trains.I guess they miss the point.Chinese government heavily invests in infrastructure to improve the lives of its people. It's not about profit first. This the true.True you can not see it in Western media when they speak about china.
The train was such a good option, I agree the scenery from the windows were so beautiful. Seeing all the towns, cities and villages along the way. Connectivity is key for better quality of life!
I think from memory - when I booked via Trip.com it did show me a map to choose a seat when I was booking (or at least make a preference for direction of travel and window or alise
Hoping you can come to Guangdong like Guangzhou someday. I wonder that maybe you will like Guangdong food. It pay more attention to the freshness of the ingredients. And it maybe will more suitable for you. Like our Guangdong special “Morning Tea”, it is very comfortable to enjoy it. “Morning Tea” is a tradition, and you can the place at 10-12am where offer “Morning Tea”. Actually, “Morning Tea” is offering dim sum as Westerners know, but it has more kinds. It is very suitable for people who like slow pace.😊 Hopefully, you will have a good in China. And welcome to China again.❤
Actually, there is free WiFi in both the trains and the stations for everyone(not relate to your seat class), but I can’t connect to the WiFi on the train(never successed), while the station WiFi is available (some places may require a Chinese phone number to receive a code, while in most places it's not necessary). By the way, if you’re interested, the last item in the snack box is called ‘Dougan’ in Chinese, which is a kind of delicious tofu product.🥰
Without a Chinese Phone number, there is no way for the delivery guy to get a hold of you when the food arrives! to prevent unnecessary dispute from happening, it is a good idea to not allow the order to be opened in the first place!
I did get a simcard in HongKong which then allowed me to get a Chinese number - So I could register with the app. Chinese number is needed to be able to register for food delivery I found in China.

In Japan, the Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka is the oldest and busiest line in Japan -is this high speed rail leg from Beijing to Shanghai the Chinese equivalent of that?
Great comparison! Yes, the Beijing to Shanghai High-Speed Rail is often considered the Chinese equivalent in terms of importance and usage. It's one of the busiest and most important high-speed rail lines in China, connecting two major cities just like the Tokaido Shinkansen does in Japan. Both lines are key to their country's rail networks and handle a huge number of passengers daily.
I can never tell which trains will have wifi and which don't I've only ever taken second class trains and sometimes there's wifi but other times there isn't
Holy shit I just realized that you are taking the newest model of China 😂😂😂 the old types don’t have that tray in the front, you have one on the armrest only...... but they added the front tray on the newest model! How lucky! ( well not a surprise because G7 is one of the “standard line” in China so they always get the best trains 😂😂😂) you should check out their business, it’s the best ! BTW maglev is no longer the fastest because they reduced the speed to 300km/h because it’s getting old.
If I travel Manchester to London one way is £80 regular or upto £300 for first class To travel Beijing to Shanghai one way regular is £56 and first I paid £120 but you can get them from around £70

Hello Wilko. Is it cheaper to take the train to Shanghai from Beijing compared to the plane? (I haven't researched). Thanks.
If you go for a second class seat, the HS train is cheaper. Total time cost should be similar
Not really. The air tickets between Beijing and Shanghai are always cheap, but the price varies.
