Welcome to Hong Kong. As a local Hongkonger I am so glad you love Hong Kong. After watching your video, I can even discover more how amazing of this city is.Thanks for your vlog, just simply excellent.
So great that you are showing HK. Mongkok not the glamorous side of the city but it does have a lot of character. The scaffoldings is not because they are poor, but bamboo is actually proven stronger than steel scaffoldings in a storm. And it's environmentally friendly and economic, best of both worlds. But it does take a special technique and skill to do so there are trained professionals to do it. That's what is used for renovations and building skyscrapers. Amazing to see!
That's why we chose to stay there initially!! We like the more local areas - better food, people like the tourists, and we want to just experience a little slice of life there! All great points about the bamboo - it seems very smart and sustainable to use!!
Bamboo scaffolding has been a tradition for HK for many years! prob the only place in the world that uses bamboo for scaffolding. Its cheap, strong and quick to put up and down compared to metal.
@@IfWeGoTo they also use it as its environmentally friendly plus due to the number of typhoons that pass by, its extremely flexible and less dangerous than the steel ones commonly found elsewhere.
Hong Kong is one of my favourite cities in the world. Amazing architecture, food, geography, transport, convenience, modernity, history. It's pretty much got everything. I recommend you do two things. 1. Eat a steamed garoupa on lamma island at one of the seafood restaurants. Trust me, even if you don't like fish you'll like this. Rainbow restaurant is a classic 2. Hike up to the top of Braemar Hill, stand on the rock and enjoy the most epic 360 degree view of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong local here, welcome to HK! I am glad that you’re having a pleasant stay here. For the bamboo scaffoldings, it’s used in construction/renovations and once the work is done, the scaffoldings will be dismantled. Hope that helps! :D

Autumn: Best temperature for visit and hiking. Winter: You won't even sweat, nice weather for city walk. Visibility may not good sometimes, no blue sky.

Hong Kong is the last (if not one of the last) place on earth still uses bamboo as scaffolding. It’s because it’s fast growing and cheap. They use it to build skyscrapers. (I was born and raised there until I was 10). Have lots of tips if you wanna know!

Welcome to HK, it is a good sign that more and more westerners visiting HK in recent years after the flood of Chinese mainlanders. Things are quite expensive in here, and there are few other smaller supermarkets we will shop for lower price. Those Michelin rated restaurants are super expensive very few local will go ! I would suggest next time you come to visit those remote islands, like Cheung Chau which is my favorite place to visit, just 45min. from the HK island, you will see more traditional living style over there. Also Lamma and Lautau island. If you enjoy water sports and boating and want to see some wildlife in here then Sai Kung is highly recommended, which is located at the eastern part of 'New Territory' . Once again thanks for visiting, and hope to see you again !
Thank you!! I think covid really messed things up, but I am sure it will become very popular once again!! :) We did not find HK to be overly expensive, compared to some destinations, yes, but compared to the USA it was reasonable. Smart , you got off at Tsing Yi and transit to Central, that would save you almost half fare fees. (Instead of taking direct express from airport to Central).
Thanks for coming to Hong Kong :) the bamboo that’s covering the buildings is called scaffolding. It is used for renovation. Actually it is a traditional Chinese style renovation method which only a few places still adopting nowadays. you should take more picture of this as it may be disappear in the near future.
Using bamboo scaffolding is unique in the world, as bamboo is flexible, strong and cheaper than a metal/aluminium material. It is erected and dismantled by skilful workers. Some type of bamboo scaffolding can allow workers standing on it to do the external wall works. As other viewers said, I definitely not recommend staying in Airbnb in old building due to insurance coverage or poor fire system. Hope you had a great time in Hk.

Those bamboo'ed buildings have a very unique style that you can recognize. They are already like 45-60 years old buildings where usually the old/poor people are living in there. Even worse is that some apartments could even partitioned like 1 into 3, 4, 5 bedroom for the poorest people in HK. Like you say, it could just one street across and see you see rich people in high rising/new buildings. The bamboo'ed building in your video is under large scale of renovotion. Very likely due to forced inspection and maintenance regulation imposed on these old old buildings.

The tensile strength of bamboo by weight is like 4 times greater than that of steel, and it's of course, much easier to handle all that scaffolding by hand using bamboo instead of requiring machines just to lift that much steel around. Even 30-50 story skyscrapers use bamboo scaffolding, and can do it all by manual labour without any machinery, because it's better in so many ways. *that said by the same cylindrical size, not accounting weight, steel is probably closer to 2.x times the tensile strength of bamboo... but then it's also just under 10 times the weight compared to bamboo.
Welcome to Hong Kong! As a local, I would like to suggest u guys spend some time in Sai Kung, where you can do hiking on different mountains and explore the rural, uncrowded side of Hong Kong :)
The airports, train stations, and subway stations in East Asian cities are big and new, and the trains are very clean. They are completely different from those in the United States.
Not every one in Hong Kong can afford a car for a numerous of reasons. Gases are super expensive and are not sold in a gallon unlike the US. And apartment complexes do not give you a parking spot, you have to rent the spot separately from the apartment rent. Not everyone can afford and is hard to drive in Hong Kong just like New York.
Re the scaffolding, it's used just like steel scaffolding, workers climb onto it to work on building exteriors. Re the butter, yes often there's a slight lemony zestiness to it, I actually quite like it as it lightens things up a bit and keeps it from feeling too heavy, but obviously not everyone does.
I am a local in HONG KONG. I understand it all depends on one's budget. Yet I recommend to stay in regular hotel, but not Airbnb in some old buildings . The hotel usually has a nice environment with better cleaning . That is my advice for all travelers

Thank you! Agreed that it’s sad things have changed, wish we could have visited sooner. I think it has the potential to become more popular as a destination again though! The world is in a weird place right now.
Welcome to HK ❤
Thank you!! 😊
Welcom to Hong Kong yes sorry we walk fast 😂🤣 Those building can be 40-50 yrs old😂🤣um..for the milk tea... I hope the cafe didn't burn the tea, if bitter can be 😐15:44 they are not poor they are fixing the building wall the baboo is for the worker convenience
Thank you!! Hahaha, you guys definitely have VERY strong legs there!! People were speedy!!
Thank you for all of your tips!
Smart , you got off at Tsing Yi and transit to Central, that would save you almost half fare fees. (Instead of taking direct express from airport to Central).
Oh we did not know that!! That's a great tip!

Ahhh thank you so much!!
Thanks for coming to Hong Kong :) the bamboo that’s covering the buildings is called scaffolding. It is used for renovation. Actually it is a traditional Chinese style renovation method which only a few places still adopting nowadays. you should take more picture of this as it may be disappear in the near future.
Thank you for your warm welcome!! That is really cool that they use the bamboo instead, seems sustainable!

Thank you for watching! Hope you can go on a trip there soon, it’s so different from Japan!! (We adore Japan too though!!)
Good travel❤
Thank you!!! 😊
Ahh thank you for letting us know!
And yes, we definitely learned our lesson, we explain in our next hong kong video!! hahaha

Ohh that makes sense! Thank you for explaining, we thought the contrast was very interesting!

It seems really smart to use it then!! Thank you for sharing!
Welcome to Hong Kong! As a local, I would like to suggest u guys spend some time in Sai Kung, where you can do hiking on different mountains and explore the rural, uncrowded side of Hong Kong :)
Thanks for the tips! :D

The airports, train stations, and subway stations in East Asian cities are big and new, and the trains are very clean. They are completely different from those in the United States.
Definitely!! I wish the USA had a comparable transit system. The trains in Asia are really incredible.
Eat wun ton noddle, a good noodle served with wun ton which mainly meat in wun ton, the surface of wun ton is a layer of flour paste.
Ahh got it, thank you!
Hi! I am in HK now to visit my parents. I was here on July 2 until Aug 13. Thank you for making videos introducing HK!

Welcome to HK, though it’s been drastically changed and deteriorated on many grounds since 1997 handed over from the UK to PRC😊
Thank you for welcoming us!! I have heard it has changed a lot...
Ahh thanks for telling us!
Oh that is a good point! I also like the butter - Alan is a bit picky when it comes to butters and other junk foods! lol
glad to see foreigners visiting HK again. Immerse in HK food culture and our country sides, u will like it.
So happy we got to visit!! Thank you so much!
