Chino Moreno (on Maynard's appearance): "Having Maynard perform on the record wasn't something that we planned on doing. We didn't plan on having any guest on the record. But being a fan of Tool and A Perfect Circle, once Maynard was involved, it was just a magical thing for us. Honestly, when he first started working with us, he wasn't supposed to sing with us. He was just working on the arrangements, riff structures, time signatures, and things like that. I don't know if you're a big fan of Tool's music, but they're really mathematical. I've been to their rehearsal space, and there's this big chart that just looks like calculus--the way they write songs, it's just crazy. It was good to have someone else who has different ways of writing songs, 'cause everyone has a different way of doing it. He came in and we started working on this one song in particular, and he just grabbed the microphone and started singing along to it, and my jaw just dropped. All of a sudden our band sounded like Tool; it was just crazy. Then, probably two months later, we went in to record the album, and I went in to record the vocals on it, and I just kept hearing his voice, this re-occurring melody with his voice coming over it. So I called him and asked him if he wanted to come down and sing on the record, and he had no problem with it. Once he came in, I gave him sort of what I wanted the song to be about, and he wrote a couple of ideas down, and the next day he came in with all the lyrics written all out with blank spaces where my lyrics were supposed to be. He's very professional like that. He wants everything set perfectly, which is the complete opposite to the way that I write, so it was cool. And then I went in and did my vocals over it, and it just seemed that our voices blended together pretty good. Yeah, it came out pretty good, so we decided to put it on the record."

“Our Lord and Savior Maynard” - He doesn't want to be seen that way. Having seen Tool in concert a dozen times or so over the years he is always about everybody else in the band and will stand off to the side or in the back so you see the other guys playing
Fun fact about this song and album is Maynard was originally going to be the main producer of the White Pony album for Deftones until he started working more on A Perfect Circle.

This song is Absolutely great. You can't go wrong with Chino & Maynard Love it! You guys realizing maynard was in the RATM song. Maynard has some other hidden gems circulating here on UA-cam. Like the cover Tool did of No Quarter by Led Zeppelin its one of the best cover's I've ever heard. I still love both versions. But Tools version really Kicks Ass! One day soon. I hope to see you both reacting to both versions.

Puscifer is awesome. It began in 1995; after Tool, but several years before APC.

@@DylanSterling Puscifer didn't really "begin" in 1995. I mean, the name existed since then, but it wasn't an actual band. It was a fictional band that they made up for a skit in a comedy show. It didn't become a real band until 2003, when Maynard did a song for the Underworld movie and credited it to Puscifer. Then he did a couple more songs for movies, and eventually decided to start releasing music for real. Puscifer's first album didn't come out until 2007.

Back in 2003 the Deftones had some interviews about the album White Pony posted on Yahoo music (probably not there any longer) Chi, their former bassist was speaking and he said they had Maynard in the studio listening to the tracks and discussing time signatures and when they got to Passenger, Maynard had a rhythm or melody he was playing with on the track. Then Chi said afterwards Chino just couldn’t get the track figured out and they kept coming back to Maynards input and ended up calling him back to record a duet. Pretty effin cool. Keep going guys. Need you to hear more Isis. It’s a audio-goldmine. Peace out.

The Trent/Maynard side project “Tapeworm” that never fully took off is what Pucifer is now. Listen to Passive from APC. That song was originally Vacant by Tapeworm.
@@killakaminski Trent Reznor actually didn't have much to do with Passive. The original track (Vacant) was written by Danny Lohner and re-arranged by Charlie Clouser, with lyrics and melody by Maynard and chorus and backing vocals by Trent.

Love Chino. He's f'n awesome as a vocalist, but MJK, lord have mercy. I've seen Tool live a few times over the years and his vocals are on another level. Passanger is just pure gold with him singing on it. It f'n beautiful.
Maynard does make everything better. The album this song came off of "White Pony" is one of my favourite albums of all time, Deftones fucking kills it from beginning to end, but "Passenger" was always the standout for me because of Maynard's voice in the chorus. Dude brings the song to another level.

I want you guys to know how much I have enjoyed your whole journey, and thought it might make this song a teeny bit extra special if you knew that this was the song that introduced me to Maynard, Tool... Y'all mention "what ever Maynard touches... there's something about it.." Y'all still need to check out Puscifer! That is his third band were he can create music that doesn't really suit Tool or A Perfect Circle. Some songs from Puscifer I'd recommend are Potions, Momma Sed, Conditions of my Parole, The Remedy, Rev 22-20, The Mission.

The thing I love about this song, if you took that guitar riff, sped it up slightly, and added double bass, it would almost work as a death metal riff...but Abe choosing to play a dance beat underneath it totally changes the feel. Love the Deftones. One of the most unique bands ever.

I met the Deftones at the record release party for this album, White Pony (which was on Chino's birthday) at a record store in NJ. Still have the signed CD. It survived hurricane sandy.
Maynard was originally brought in to help produce this track and ended up being in it. Which is why it sounds like the Deftones covering a Tool song.
I'm not a huge follower, but I like that y'all sorta react without pausing.. More like hearing it with your boys.

They apparently did let Maynard have a good amount of creative input on how this song was created. From what I've read, they did alot with him regarding how to construct their songs for the entire White Pony album.
As I've said in the past, if you want another side of Maynard's creative genius, Puscifer - "The Remedy" will do well for you.

Hum's album You'd Prefer an Astronaut was a big influence on the Deftones, especially the White Pony album. One of my favorite songs, after getting my head right, with headphones on is Afternoon with the Axolotls by Hum. Probably not known enough for a reaction but definitely worth a listen! Maynard co-wrote it, but Deftones evolved into a band that was maybe the most creative of their generation in terms of composition, melody, and subject. For this see their 2012 masterpiece "Rosemary".

Check out the song Intersession by the band Lesser Key. This is original Tool bassist Paul D'amour's band. His bass on this is amazing.
