The Falling of a Giant Mill Chimney!
I got tagged in a tweet on Saturday saying that there was a demolition planned for a Chimney in Oldham. I had no idea this was happening, but I knew I had to go explore.
I love old industrial stuff, so if you know of anything cool near you. Do let me know, I would love to come check it out!
I went on the Saturday and did a little tour, then went back Sunday to see it fall. It was crazy.
I hope you enjoy this video.
Thanks as always,
WT

Lets take a moment to appreciate the brickies that built the thing!!! Great video mate.
Such skilled workers back then 👏
I find it strange that people cheer and clap their history and heritage being destroyed 🙄, I worked at a coke plant that was built in 1843 and the last oven push was in 2014,I worked the night shift on the morning it was due to be closed down and the company that owned it invited the locals up to watch the historic moment, cheers clapping and smiles as a local business dating to the Victorian era closed its doors with the loss of 200+ jobs all local men from the neighboring village too 😅, completely baffled me and I left feeling they hadn't a clue on the heritage they'd just lost 😔
This stack should have been left as a monument to the men who built and worked there! They aren't just chimneys, they are links to and reminders of our past industrial might and the dedication of the men and women that made it possible.
Most don’t care about anything beyond nonsense they watch and alcohol etc.
YEAH MATE,I FIND IT BLOODY OUTRAGEOUS TOO!--HEAPS OF LOCAL JOBS ,AND BUSINESS AS WELL,-THERE NEEDS TO BE A "REVOLT"
People are THICK, that's why.
A people without any true sense of their identity, culture, traditions, or history are no longer a nation, merely idiotic slaves.
it was mostly children who worked there probably
Would that be Monckton Coking Plant near Barnsley by any chance? I remember them blowing up the ones at Smithywood Coking plant in Sheffield near where I live. That was back in 1987. It used to stink so it wasn't really missed ua-cam.com/video/WPSTseKcjIU/v-deo.html
It is sad to see our industrial heritage being destroyed in a matter of seconds, these monuments should be preserved. Keep up the good work mate you consistently put out great content 👍
The Land around the former mill & channel is earmarked for Housing, Lets hope it includes social housing as well.
For a chimney to be proud and erect for over 120 years + is as you say a tribute to the workmanship of years gone by, But like every big large erection eventually it will became a deflated and flacid memory. It's hard & stout protuberance a warming memory for future discussions . 🥒 🥒 .
I appreciate this thanks 😀 lots more content to come 👍👍
The worst part about it all. They'll throw up some awful houses that'll most likely collapse within 10 years
@@IDontModWTFz rather hyperbolic, no?
*Ode to a Lost Chimney*
Oh, glorious chimney, how tall you once stood
As one with the industry, part of its blood!
Months to create you, each brick laid with care
Result, a fine stack that _punched into the air!_ 👍
Then, no longer needed, (but by a few vines)
The proud men who made you moved on with the times..
It took months to build you, so great was your worth..
Then seconds to bring you right back down to earth.. 😪
*RIP tall chimney!* 🤗
Aw loved that thank you 👏👏
@@wanderingturnip The house I grew up in was actually called "Tall Chimneys".. not kidding, David! 🤗
@@pimpozza I love your odes
Your passion for chimneys is unmatched... And I love it!!
Hey thanks for this 😀
For some reason, I thought Grade II + Grade I listed stuff was meant to be looked after and preserved, but apparently not. Just blow it up.
Yeah I thought the same
So sad. Another piece of our past gone. We need to be reminded why such structures are important and why they were built in the first place. They brought prosperity to some but many of the men and women who lived and worked in those industrialised areas very often lived in poverty and had short, brutish lives.
As a kid i recall having a cup of tea in Fred Ds back Garden with my Dad who knew Fred a little bit. in my 20s I often saw Fred up and down the M65 in his old land rover
Oh that’s cool, such a legend
‘Calculated, controlled, destroyed ruthlessly to its core, the history and artistic skills used to create this exist no more’ great footage again @ wandering turnip, it makes you wonder why these housing estates were allowed to be built so closely to something that was deemed to be so dangerous…….or was it just greed to create more homes that the people of the UK can no longer afford?
It is amazing how long this chimney stood. As you said, survived two world wars and preceded the Titanic. When things are around so long, I hate to see them go! Shame it had to go, if it actually had to. Thanks for capturing this for us. Yes, those bricks must be worth having. ☺️😌
Thank you for watching 😀
I worked for English Heritage back in the day (2004-2005) and at they time they seemed to be very concerned with preserving the industrial heritage. I'm surprised a beautiful old mill would be allowed to be demolished like that. How very unfortunate. Same thing with the chimney. Surely the value of these old structures goes beyond utility.
Think it’s down to money.Sadly. My parents visited Chesterfield Cathedral yesterday (the crooked spire). Fabulous place, ruinously expensive to run, like all such places. Today we know the price of everything but the value of nothing. The Crooked Pub or even that Sycamore tree as two perfect examples.
Your enthusiasm is so contagious you almost had me shedding a tear for the tall chimney.. gone in seconds.. no longer destined to _"punch into the sky!"_ 😢
Amazing drone footage too.. 👌 Great job, David. I love this channel and may the chimney RIP.. 🙏
Your enthusiasm lifts this video as high as the chimney itself, Mate! Thanks for a hugely enjoyable commentary and some thrilling pictures.
Glad you enjoyed it 😀👍
This brought back some memories. As a child in the 70's my dad took me all over the North of England to see many of these Chimneys brought down. At the time I was too young to realise the significance.
Watched Fred for many years thanks for the watch lad ❤
"The council have a fund set up to get rid of anything the Wanderng Turnip likes." 😂😭 Another great vid - thank you!
Councils have very little money these days - they have been starved of funds.
Nah mate. the developer do. They probably got a department set up subscribed / notification bell rung just so when he uploads another video they go to the town and mothball it more lol.
The Chimney that was smoking at the end is Ellend Rd Mill it is the last working steam mill working and the first Sunday in every month they have it open for the public to go in.
I’m going to have to go check this out next month 👍👍
I did a video on it its fantastic snd last working
Another great document, cheers for sharing!
Two youngsters put on the High-viz a managed to walk into our Aussie rules Grand final two years ago, great effort!
The power of the high viz is remarkable 😂 thanks for watching 👍👍
'The chimney is smoking as respect for its fallen brother!' Ha ha I love it! Just brilliant!
👏
One of my friends parents lives at the bottom of the road Hertford mill was on, and another friend at college used to live in the now demolished flats round the corner. I remember litter picking for the council about 10 years ago as an agency worker and kids where wandering around the mill before it was knocked down and going on the roof.
The Chimney by the M62 at milrow is ellen road steam engine from memory, we visited when I was at school 30odd years ago.. Having looked you can go in on sundays.
I love the hard hat and hi-vis technique 😂👍
It’s my super power
Incredibly sad seeing a piece of history destroyed in seconds, especially for new builds
I know right 🙁
Excellent video, and including the one at the beginning, only 3 adverts. This gets a thumbs up from me
I went all the way through the mill from top to bottom and crawled from the boiler house and actually stood inside the chimney stack looking up at the sky when I worked for Oldham Council about 15 years ago
Oh no way. Do you have any photos?
@@wanderingturnip sorry no I don`t we only had crappy Nokia 3210 phones issued to us at the time 😞
These structures should be listed
I never thought I’d be so invested in a video about a chimney 😂 Thanks again for another great video, this is turning into one of my favourite channels
Thanks for watching 👏😀😀
Loved the fact you worked chimneys and mills into this video consistently especially when they were done together
Thanks!
Mate thank you so much 👏👏👏 you’re a legend
I didn't realise they were pulling down the old Rock Nook mill near Littleborough. But reading up on it it seems that they've had to since it's collapsing.
Why not let it collapse on its own? Become a part😊 of the environment like Roman ruins
Or reinforce it? Heritage and history vanish
Heartbreaking! Great video once again, shame it had to be to say goodbye to yet another historic landmark remembering the glory days of our industrial revolution. 😞Cheers 🍺
Yeah sad to see it go but I was glad to be there. Thanks for watching 👍👍
Been really loving all the films you're making at the moment. Your genuine intrigue and fascination for the things you make videos about really translates well
Ah thanks so much for the nice comment. I’m really glad you like my stuff 😀
You've made me a chimney convert!! 😂
That’s the plan…
That was a fantastic video, I love how much you love chimneys 🤣
Love your enthusiasm, great that you managed to capture it.
Yeah sad to see it go but glad I was there
Damn I wish I knew you were coming to Oldham
I would have loved to have met you ...
I love your content
Next time 😀😀
Actually I hope there isn’t another chimney coming down, that would suck
@wanderingturnip
Sadly it's the powers that be in Oldham who are destroying our town's last embers
No consciousness what so ever
I love Oldham, but it's a skeleton of what it used to be
dont get rid of them bricks david
Aww - I've been to that Chimney - fripp - their killin everything nice n olde worlde - such a shame
Wow, so sad. What if Britain needs them again. Great vidio again. Thankyou
Didn't realise so many people were interested in these old chimneys i,ve loved them since.i was a kid the history the people that would built them the people that would have worked in the old mills fantastic parts of our history fred dibnah was an absolute legend great video lad
Thanks
Oldham, apart from being a disaster zone in its urban centre, also hosts probably the worst busker in the North. He's quite young and can't carry a tune for love nor money. People pay him to stop.
Lol, hope he improves with practice.
Haha I want to come listen
I got emotional when it came down. I'm sad i believe that the government wants rid of the Industrial Revolution memories cheers mate
There will be some awful new build houses thrown up in its place 😒
i used to live in a cottage across the road from that mill in littleborough, it has been empty for many years, i didn't know they were demolishing it.
I remember watching the powerstation Chimneys coming down at Ringley. Also i actually watch the great Fred Dibnah bringing a chimney down just outside Bolton. Great spectacles but sad in a way. Great footage there Dave👏
I’d have loved to see one brought down by Fred. No health and safety 😂😂
I watched these coming down, week later, they did the chimneys
ua-cam.com/video/KnwQjqUnEfI/v-deo.html
Love the drone shot at the beginning. Great video as usual dude.
Thank you 👍👍
Chimney enthusiast is so sweet, hi Dave from another Dave.
Appreciate it Dave 🤝
great videos mr turnip keep up the good work
Thank you 🙏
Great video that David. Little bits of our history are being scratched away. I liked the bit at the end that the other chimney was bellowing for it’s fallen brother. 😊
I know I really hope that is the reason it was smoking today. Thank you for watching 😀
great demo work, perfect job, awesome footage too !
Thank you very much!
Fred would’ve had that chimney in that trench easy. Even he said though that he didn’t like doing it because it’s erasing history. Just think about the time, money and man power it took to build and then maintain it. All the steeple jacks that had to ladder it countless times over the years.
You try and explore Overstone Hall. It's a massive country estate they are rethinking of demolishing, check it out before it goes!!
You've got to come and have a look at Leigh Spinners mill, it's a fine example of a mill that's being put to good use, embracing its heritage and is thriving!
Oh thanks I’ll get it on my list!
Wow, amazing
Great vlog
Thanks for watching 😀
Thank you very much for the video it is really appreciated.I too share a passion for mill chimneys the one at milnrow belongs to the ellenroad trust which runs it every so often there was a big mill there which was demolished in 1985
Walkleys Clogs!
I got to sit with FRED for well over an hour as he and his second wife had been put in a room to meet and greet and sign books if any had got them with them. This was at The Steam Farm down in Devon. I had also taken a photo of my home built Steam Locomotive which he took great delight in hearing of its construction. The mob eventually found and only got a few minutes with him.
Ah amazing! Bet that was class
Nice little gem of a comment. Quite a few of them in here
I love how excited you are at getting the message at the start haha brilliant stuff
ace video mate!
Thanks pal 😀
Great video! Chimneys with feelings!
Thank you very much!
Love your blogs , that tower disappeared in seconds Xx
Yeah it happened so fast. Loads of people had put there phones down and missed recording it
Hi mate new subscriber here from Oldham itself. Just letting you know there was another mill next to the Manor called Kent mill that was knocked down in the 90s. Some good pics on the t’interweb. Growing up in 80s I used to spend all my time playing in and around the old mills and think it’s sad how one by one they’ve all gone especially the chimney stacks.
Thanks for watching man. It really is sad to see them go. Luckily I’ve got a lot of the stacks still left round where I live
Great video
Loved this, Fred would have too, they are our history and deserve the reverence you put on them. So sad that all this lovely history is being lost with the march of so called progress. Like Stoke and the hoardings put up stating new squares and apartments, but the money given to improve, is lost to sideways ventures and companies that never provide. I admire your stance for our our lost history and I love your passion. Well done!!
Ellenroad Mill at Milnrow in steam first Sunday each month is the mill chimney smoking at tge end of the film..worth a visit. My grandfather was night stoker at the mill back in the day, his job to stoke the boilers and keep them burning overnight ready for steaming at 6 am each morning.
Great video 👍 has anyone said you really look like Dylan from Brassic 🌟
I get it all the time! That and Lional Messi
@@wanderingturnip Nothing wrong with either of them 🌟👍👏 keep up the great content
I've been living in the shadow of the Hartford Mill chimney since 1971, so sad . . I miss it 😢.
I met Fred Dibnah back in the early eighties. It was during a day out with my grandparents to Bakewell (I think?). Nice bloke. My grandad was in the Royal Engineers as a lad, so they had a good natter.
On your Bolton upload you mentioned having an interested in finding industrial history. If you head to the other side of Huddersfield from you, there's the National Mining Museum.
There's also the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, a touch to the south. You could probably visit both in the same day.
The smoking chimney is at Ellen road steam museum. Its open the first sunday of the month . If its smoking you know the steam engine is operating. There was a classic car show in the grounds this morning . But of a washout though unfortunately .
That was some excellent footage, well done!
Months to erect hand made no doubt by the people who made the mills , and chimney and takes seconds to destroy 😢 I remember fred what a legend.its so sad part of history .thank you for sharing xx
just to clarify:
i: hartford mill chimney was never listed, it was the mill, listed in error instead of hartford works, 200 yards up the road. took ages to de-list.
ii)manor mill is a fully functioning warehouse, used by ultimate products. they sell populard branded household goods.
iii) the chimney in milnrow is part of the ellenroad steam engine works. the largest still working steam engine in the world. worth a visit.
I tried getting in that Mill last year and we nearly did, but the further we got in it was really dangerous so we came back out. A bit further down there is a house with some old cars outside ones a TR6
hi this chimney reminds me of the one what use to stand next to the english sewing cotton company mill in belper derbyshire although the mill still stands [that was built in 1912] the chimney had to be destroyed as it was unsafe. but the mill is a great site as you enter the town from matlock but there is still a mill and chimney on the A6 at cromford belper. really enjoy the videos but this one was a little sad to see our history gone but at least you have a record of this great old mill chimney thanks for your videos.have a great week
We had a holiday and stayed in a village called Crich near Matlock and I think I remember the mill you are talking about on the main road. Lovely area Derbyshire. Cheers from Queensland.
These sort of your videos are my fav
There is a chimney at the bottom of Edenfield Road/ Spotland Bridge.. if you go around the back of the mill you can actually go inside the chimney..
your videos are getting better and better every time. May I ask what camera you are using? Keep up the good work so informative and engaging!
Hey thanks so much. The camera is a DJI pocket 2. I love it. I use the DJI drone as well 👍👍
@@hermanhermit7793 how so?
Fred dibnah was the man for taking down chimneys he done it the respectful way
You should make a video about Wainhouse Tower in Halifax, it is actually a very posh Chimney. Sir Henry Edwards, A wealthy neighbour of Wainhouse, made complaints about the smoke nuisance caused by the Dyeworks, leading to a feud between the two men. John Edward Wainhouse developed the idea of building a chimney 350 metres up the hillside from the Dyeworks, connected to it by an underground flue. Wainhouse had a good appreciation of architecture and determined that the chimney should be an object of beauty.
Yeah I actually need to do this. I drive past it all the time
I literally live two streets away from that chimney and used to mess about in the Mill when I was a kid. Its sad to see it go tbh
I bet, did they evacuate you today?
There were still pigeons perched inside when the tower collapsed, frantically emerging from the hole. I wonder if they had built nests already.
hey David Burnip guess what there is an old chimney in Melton Mowbray on Thorpe road where the old hospital was and its being turned into flats and houses. its fenced off but i think you can still admire it quite close up. let me know if your coming to take a look and i can come and show you where it is... bless you.
Hey mate thanks for this. Someone else mentioned that place actually about its history, I’ll get it added to my list
@@wanderingturnip no worries mate be nice to meet you as i do follow your channel
Near where I live in Bedfordshire we had the Stewartby Brick works and they had like 20 large Chimneys some were knocked down in the 70s and then the brickworks closed in 2008 about 6 very large Chimneys stod until 2021 when they got blown up
You would of loved it large brickworks with 6 very large Chimneys near a railway with a bunch of borded up buildings
Those Chimneys were a landmark of Bedfordshire you could see them from the railway and when I saw them I knew I was home
And like you said about early memories those Chimney stacks at Stewartby were mine like the mill was to you
Now they are building new houses on the land
These chimneys should be maintained and kept as monuments to the Industrial Revolution that we pioneered and gifted to the world. There’s nothing left now to show kids and say we built awesome things.
We really don’t build cool things like these any more do we
When I say awesome things I mean amazing industries. Obviously we have the best Norman cathedrals in the world but the industry stuff should stay.
Bloody love a chimney youd think a lot more of these buildings would be opened as a museum or given a new lease of life. Especially grade listed.
I know it really is a shame
I moved from the area years ago, but whenever I come back there's always things missing 😮💨
An absolute triumph of a video yet again. Already looking forward to the next one.
Thank you so much 👏
I wanna know the deets of that smoking chimney at the end - so cool if it really is a mark of respect thing!
I know it's not quite the same but I live near Fiddler's Ferry Power Station which has closed down and 4 of the 8 towers are set to come down next year in the first phase of demolition, they are selling raffle tickets for charity to press the button. It's a local landmark and it will be strange to not see them, I've never know them to not be there
Oh thanks for this. I’ll look into it, might have to come watch
They have now given a date for them to come down, Sunday 3rd December 2023, not sure of times but I'm sure you can find out
Thank you for another brilliant video as always!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Sad to see all that history go. We had a few in Coventry but most gone now. Great video though, and love the drone shot showing the very top
Thank you for watching 😀
Great shame this chimney was demolished! How did this happen when it had listed status? I thought that was meant to protect structures from being destroyed 😢
I think they just have to neglect it long enough that it becomes a danger and beyond repair. Public safety trumps historical interest. Sad.
Manor Mill looked gorgeous 😍. Really liked it's chimney. Great footage of the chimney demolition.
If you get a chance it might be worth taking a trip down to Swindon. From what I have heard about 25% of the shops in the centre are closed down.
Hearing those cheers saddend me
Love your work. Hope you have steele capped boots with your hi vis and hard hat kit.
Would love to see you do some more documentation on chimneys around Oldham mate, plenty round there and would be cool to see what's going on with them.
Yeah I’ll have to come back and explore more, this was actually my first time
There's also an area called Walton le Dale where Cromwell got a savage slap .
Hi Dave. Another cracking video - thanks. I’ve just had a weekend in Carlisle and wondered if you’d considered visiting the city. The architecture within the city walls is really varied and interesting and the (not too depressed) shopping area is surrounded by buildings that would benefit from your detailed inspection! The big bonus for visiting is two cracking chimneys just outside of the city walls. Well worth a train journey IMHO. All the best mate. Paul
My home town had a tannery skin works that closed. Demolition moved in and cleared the site except a couple of chimneys and a roadside wall. Teenagers used to hang around the chimneys and light fires. Tesco bought the land and applied for planning to build a store. We wondered how they would incorporate the chimneys into the car park. The chimneys both mysteriously became dangerous shortly after and got demolished. The wall was surveyed and mostly found to be unsafe and demolished leaving a small section which they used at the base of a banking.
In florence italy if you buy a building in the city centre youre legally responsible to maintain and repair as it was origionally.
Its important to keep our physical history we should spend the money on renovating these magnificent peices historical structures . We could reuse theae buildings !
