Even though his mother abandoned him, he always looked for her. She would continue to reject him and he would continue to look for her and always had love for her despite her abandonment and neglect. He even bought her a house, the exact house that she was a maid at for years. This gift was still not enough and yet he never stopped loving her and trying to provide for her once he found her soon after leaving foster care when he was old enough to do so. And to write this song for her and about her and how sad he is that's she has died and still hoping one day to be reunited with her and wishing he could've done more for her while she was alive. Man, that reality hits too hard to handle. The story of his life is beyond tragic...

Él mismo confirmo en varias entrevistas que esa canción fue compuesta y dedicada a su madre la cual murio en 1974 cuando estaba de gira. Le dieron la noticia cuando pasaba por Acapulco lo cual es la razón por la que existe esa línea en la canción. Antes de agregar esa línea, la parte que dice: “Oscura soledad estoy viviendo, la misma soledad de tu sepulcro, mamá” ya estaba en la letra original. Así que desde un principio y con toda intención, Amor Eterno, fue la canción que él compuso estrictamente y directamente para su mamá.

Juan Gabriel is a great showman who really plays with the audience´s emotions. He´s a first class joker, often he sings about painful experience which is just plain irony, he seems to suffer but are actually having fun while doing it. But this, he says in the beginning, is more of a prayer than a song. A very subdued scenic performance, no irony at all, he´s ver honest in his expression, it´s a beutfiul song to his deceased mother.
