Music is usually what inspires me. I’ll be listening to the lyrics of the song and visualize it and somehow come up with a really cool concept, whether it’s art, a story, or something as small as a cool title for a Spotify playlist

That's pretty cool! There's a lot of inspiration with so much music out there!

I have to agree. Recording ideas and keeping screenshots and pictures of art that inspires is a great way to be able to be creative quickly. For a long time I was having ideas but just leaving them in my head and most of the time I would forget these ideas which is just depressing. But finally I started to record my ideas in the notes app on my phone for anything, illustrations, characters, stories, games, even companies. And now I always have some sort of story or something that I feel like I could be working on whenever I want to be create. Always record your ideas and make sure they are on some sort of cloud if you record them in a device.

If I leave any ideas in my head it just gets it all clogged up! I think it's because I'm trying to keep them in my memory. But, writing them down is way less effort and stressful! That's great! Glad someone agreed with my recommendation and also uses it :)

Thanks :) I used to have this problem before I started a UA-cam channel. I fixed it by having to start and finish artworks on a schedule for my channel, otherwise I would feel like I would let my audience down. Also, just leaving your project on the top of your desk helps too :)

No problem! I don't believe that - even if you draw a version of the Mona Lisa, it'll be YOUR version and rendition of the painting. There's a quote.. Great artists steal. Because even if you copy something from another artists you can't help but change it or do something different that makes it unique to you. Keep drawing and you'll start working out your own style that others will take inspiration from in the future :)

I personally don't have one but i'm doing a graphic design with illustration course at college and our creative process is kinda like this: research, looking for images and annotating them, what we like about them and what we don't like about them, this can be existing illustrations or photos or anything, you could make a moodboard as well to get going, then we go into visual planning where we do things like a mindmap or 2, lots of thumbnails to generate ideas, then you could proceed to experiment with the media, try lots of small, simple drawings or anything like that which could give you ideas for using media in certain ways etc, then we start working on a real illustration or a project where we make about 4 roughs, so a few more developed illustrations but not nececarily polished and finished, then we could either work from one of the developments or start a new one and make a final, polished illustration.

The combination of the two techniques that you now have as your own style is really cool. And it's always very interesting to see how the artist actually found his way to it.
As for getting inspired, I always get ideas spontaneously. Sometimes while watching a movie. sometimes while looking at other artists' stuff...
Anyway, this is a really cool video. I doubt the way that you described would work for everyone, but I take it as a possible inspiration for people on what to try to improve their creative process. I think that the goal of the video has been achieved :)

+Paul J Thanks for your great comment, Paul! :)
You're exactly right, my way won't work for everyone but it's all about experimenting with new ways to find what works and doesn't work you you :) I'm really happy I got that message across in the video!
Do all your drawings come from spontaneous ideas or do you also decide to try something when you see it?

I would love to see you do a full page tribal/doodle. Make a 30 + minute long video like your "Doodle/Zentangle" on your instagram. Perhaps also a video where you show your recording setup. NOT TO MENTION a art supplies collection video.

  • @MixdJuxt

Great video, cool to see your process. I guess mine is kind of similar, only less arrows. I've been watching other artists for years, especially those with walkthroughs and tutorials of their techniques. I spend a lot of time watching tutorials on UA-cam and Pinterest. Even for stuff I might never do, or that I'm not even interested in their art style, but I want to learn the techniques and materials and apply that knowledge.
I make things that are uniquely me, maybe they have many ideas from other sources, but what I create will be its own style. I don't want to compare my art to millions of other artists who might be better than me, none of them are me, so they wouldn't make what I'd make anyways. So I would rather learn from those whose skills I admire and not expect myself to be them. That can be one of the greatest discouragements that block creativity.
I thrive off of the community. Feedback and recognition of my accomplishments helps me strive to accomplish more. Recently, I participated in Inktober. Even though I wasn't able to keep up with an artwork every day, I was continually being creative, getting feedback and giving feedback to other artists. So, into November and I'm continuing to try to do something creative every day.
Making lists. I need my 'Arty to do list' to keep me on track. I'm easily sidetracked by things (UA-cam) and might feel lost if I don't know what I'm 'supposed' to be working on. So, I make a list of several goals. Then I get to work on it. I'm drinking several teas, peppermint is a favorite, but often I am in a spicy mood and drinking something with cinnamon in it. Adequate lighting is important to me as well. And a window, sunlight! And keeping the art table somewhat clean and organized. I've finally gotten a computer to do art on and it really has improved my productivity. Since now, I draw/paint/etc then take pictures/scan, and then upload my files. Also, it means I am at my art desk every day, rather than sitting on the laptop glowering over at the mess of it whilst scrolling through Facebook endlessly.
Lately I have been getting involved with Patreon and on Twitch.TV communities. All my social networks are filled with artists. I watch artist pages on FB, follow artists on Twitter, here, deviantART (of course). And even though I might not be creating something, socializing with those artists does influence creativity just like you said. I would love to go to a devMeet or somewhere to hang out with a bunch of artists, like an art colony! Thanks for making these videos, it is always entertaining to watch.

    • @AShowAboutArt
      @AShowAboutArt  9 років тому

+Gillian Ivy Are you sure you don't want to include more arrows into your process? haha Yes, I agree. Sometimes looking at an artist who paints how you want to is slightly discouraging. For me, it's digital painters. I really want to learn how to paint like the professional digital artists - but it's discouraging to try and start from nowhere haha
Cinnamon is really nice with warm milk! One of my tricks to getting to sleep quicker haha Which drinks do you have with cinnamon? That's so cool to have your own art desk! I really would like something like what you have. It's great to be able to separate the art stuff and the fun facebook and time wasting stuff!
I would like to meet new artists, but haven't really heard of many devMeets in Australia. Have you ever been to one? No problem, thanks for watching, Gillian! :)

    • @MixdJuxt
      @MixdJuxt 9 років тому

Never been to a devMeet, though I think there are a few deviants in my area. I joined a local group on dA, but don't think they've held anything. Most things would be out of our way, anyways.
I have a few different teas with cinnamon as an ingredient. Did pick up some peppermint today. I like to have many different teas to choose from. Also, brewing a pot of coffee with a bit of cinnamon in the grinds is actually quite good.
Well, my art desk is actually a crowded table in the corner of my bedroom with all my art supplies shoved into the closet... So, not ideal for creativity. Or for painting, since I try to avoid paint splatters everywhere. I really need a place that I can get messy. Having a monitor on my art table does make me more conscience about where bits go flying.
I guess I try not to compare, but it is discouraging if you come across some masterful teenager and feel like you've wasted your life. ;D But instead, I try to compare myself to me. My own progression astounds me from where I was to now... And digital paint is such a challenge, since the tool doesn't feel right. I only got the hang of it in my last year or so of digital painting. And even so, I primarily use just one brush, at different sizes with varying opacity and flow. I'm like a digital finger painter!

I find an obscure reference to an ancient civilizations artifact, Like "the Sacred Egg of Heliopolis" Then I find ancient text with a reference to it, like Bryans Mythology Or the two Babylon's. Both have a crude drawing of the bronze statutes. After some research you can sketch out 4 thumbnail sketches, Break the egg on to the planet or just having it sitting there broken open on the surface. Then all of life can spring from the clear Egg white and all the rivers can become the Mesopotamian rivers & Plants

Do I have any animaters or drawers who are into Pokemon and would like to make a UA-cam video? I have a few visions, depending on your art.
*If you animate and operate characters:*
*1.* Geodude having a fistfight with Machop, Graveler in acrobatic combat with Hitmontop, Midnight Lycanroc doing martial arts with Lucario, Cranidos with Scraggy headbutting each other, and Regirock brutally fighting Urshifu, with touches of grappling. To give context, I think the five
Rock Pokemon ought to be Fighting types too, so I wanted to see my theory onscreen.
*2.* Kadabra and Braixen having a magical duel with the spoon and stick (respectively), until they evolve. Alakazam uses Alakazite to Mega Evolve, so now it's a wizard Pokemon dueling Delphox, a witch Pokemon
    *If you make comics:*
*1.* Misty panickily running away from Bug Pokemon in an infested forest. Wherever she goes, a different Bug type is there. Here's what makes this interesting: this includes Vibrava and Lurantis, who aren't even Bug types, and yet are modeled after a dragonfly and mantis (respectively). Misty's _gotta_ be afraid of those bug-resembling Pokemon, even if they aren't Bug type. Also would like to see Escavalier in "hand-to-hand" combat with Beedrill, who Mega Evolves to continue the duel.
*2.* A sequel to season one's _"The Punchy Pokemon,"_ in which Brock registered his Geodude for a Fighting Pokemon tournament. I can think of other non-Fighting Pokemon that should be allowed, like Greninja and Incineroar. This comic would feature martial arts in a ring.
Please let me know if you're interested, and ask any questions you have.

Thanks for the Only Chillstep idea, very handy.
Good video, always so interesting to hear how other artists work through the art process.
Just had a thought - check out PeterDraws on youtube, his pen line work is amazing and very inspirational.
