Your teaching is so opposite than what I had been taught. I was told to throw away small brushes, and use larger brushes. But I could not get used to that method for my style of painting. Then I saw what small brushes you use and you take your time for delicate realism. I am so glad I found your videos. Love them! Thank you for sharing.
Who would say to throw away small brushes? You use whatever is needed for your piece. What if your painting on a 8”x10” canvas are you gonna use a 3” brush lol?
There are many ways to achieve the same end result. Even if your technique is considered "incorrect" by some, you can keep using it as your own personal technique if you are happy with what your are getting.
yeah, whomever said throw away small brushes can suck an egg. It ALL depends on the size of your painting. If you're working on a 24 x 36 sure, use larger brushes but doing 16 x 20 you need small brushes to get the details. I'm actually working on making my own fan brush, 1/4" bristles 3/8" wide. Haven't found one commercially in the right size.
Wow just stumbled along this video and not even a painter but man you made this look like something I would love to try. Love when people like yourself HELP other people that are trying to just improve. Thanks you get a big thumbs up.
It's always good to watch an MJS video once on a while to remind myself that there's always a more realistic painter, so I don't need to stress trying to be perfect.
Its totally mesmerising. How a plain canvas can be transformed into such a beautiful picture that is so lifelike. Totally inspirational, and you make it look much easier than I believe it is.
I wanted to learn how to paint the foliage and Deep jungle in background and searched for videos but none of the video was showing and teaching this essential art than Mr. Michael. Today I am very very happy for this great video. Many Many thanks to Mr. Michel.
May I just say that watching you paint is mesmerizing and the music you choose for your videos is absolutely spot on for me! It completely gets the creative juices flowing. Thank you for sharing your work with the world.
My darling man… found you by complete accident! You have an extraordinary talent, leaves me breathless. I’m a coloured pencil artist, but your work leaves me… cannot find words!😮
Simply amazing. Wonderful talent! I've always been envious of people who could sing, play musical instruments or paint. Have a friend who could do all 3 and I sometimes felt like not wanting to be his friend anymore hahah
Fascinating! I've taken photos of different trees, shrubs, and grasses to study textures and colors. I see you have a nice photo to work from, but I'm sure you could work from memory as well to create some realistic scenes. From what I've seen so far, you strive for photo realism in all of your work.. I do the same, except I lean more towards hard, shiny objects (classic car grills, etc).
This was so easy so understand as I was able to see exactly the method you were describing. When someone breaks down actions into small, concise parts, even the most complicated of operations become easily manageable. Thank you for sharing your skills with us.
Unbelievable !!!!!!! very realistic and outstanding painting you have created .... honestly never seen before ....god job and keep it work up the good work !!!👋👋👌👌👌👌
Thank you so much for this video. It was so informative. I have all your brushes, but haven't been using them quite like this. I certainly will be trying this technique. Thank you again!😊
As I’ve shifted my focus to more photo realism paintings I’m so grateful for your content!! I learn every time and it helps me tremendously. I use acrylics vs oil so just need to work a bit faster 😊
Hey Michael this was so helpful thank you so much for putting this video out, I’m gonna try to practice these tips now and try a landscape. Beautiful work 😊👍
I just bought your tree and texture brush. It arrived very fast to OZ. I'm very happy. Hope to being able yo start using it asap. Thanks very much. I'll try to get the other brushes soon. Cheers
Thank you so much! That way makes perfect sense, so much so it's almost like why didn't I think of that haha. This is going to help my noobie paintings a lot!
Fantastic! Watching your methods is encouraging because it doesn’t look as difficult as I thought it would be. I’m left thinking the hardest bit is going to be patience 😂.
Good luck but from experience, the paint consistency and the correct brushes greatly contribute. Unfortunately I'm not sure about either except the fan brush. Great technique though.
Good morning, when you said that you were adjusting the color of the darks did you add green to the black for the darkest layer on the lighter trees? Your trees always come out so fantastic! Thank you for this demonstration. Enjoy painting!
Wow Michael last time I stopped by you got something like 500K followers wow ! You deserve it you have so much talent and skills and not like other Artist u actually sincere in showing us the tricks! Congrats for the million mark and expecting another million in the next year. Proud of you bro!👍👍👍👍
Amazing paintings and a amazing artist. I subscribe to his lessons. They are great, but I have yet to really catch on to "loading" the outside of the fan brush to make the very realistic leaves. Mine tend to look like coconuts or bowling balls. I suppose it's in the touch, of which I will learn over time.
So, I've been going back through and catching up on all of your videos that I've missed, and one thing came to mind when you're painting. You let your mid tones obviously dry before adding the darker texture, but do you allow the dark texture to dry also before adding the lighter highlights overtop?
Wonderful video lesson as always! I do have a question: Is that canvas you are painting on? Will it then be stretched to a frame after the painting is finished?
when blocking before this video. how long does it take the paint to dry and what dryness are no looking for? like that 3 day kind of dry and I am guessing the blocking is not a very wet paint to begin with? thanks have a wonderful day!
Hi Micheal. I love your tutorials. You explain and demonstrate things in such a brilliant way. I was wondering if you could explain why it's better to do this phase in oil rather than just continue with acrylic. I've recently decided to switch from oil paint to acrylic because my wife complains about the chemical smell in the house LOL Can all of these things be achieved with acrylic paint?
Yes, you just have less time to make smooth blends and use your mixed palette colours before the acrylics dry. You can use acrylic mediums and extenders or 'open' acrylics to lengthen the drying time for blending work, but imo doing fine details like this in acrylic is even easier than oils.. well, so long as it's good quality paint. Cheap acrylics are a nightmare so avoid those: the pigments are thin and they dry dull and colourless. It's worth the money to get professional grade acrylics.

Impressionist/loose brushwork seems to be the choice of most art teachers since modern art came in. It’s ok, but just another way of painting.
Who would say to throw away small brushes? You use whatever is needed for your piece. What if your painting on a 8”x10” canvas are you gonna use a 3” brush lol?

I started by watching Bob and Bill. So glad I found MJS and Tischler

Was thinking the same thing.

Great! I love trees and your touch is magic to me. I'll try to improve 'my trees'. Thanks.
Simply amazing. Wonderful talent! I've always been envious of people who could sing, play musical instruments or paint. Have a friend who could do all 3 and I sometimes felt like not wanting to be his friend anymore hahah
I could watch him paint all day. :)
😯Wowow!!! Absolutely beautiful. So realistic!
Thank you! Cheers!

Thank you very much for your incredible lessons. I'm trying to replicate your steps in painting foliage using digital paint...
This is mesmerizing and very helpful. Now I understand what I'm doing wrong, it's all about creating depth! Thank you
Beautiful, thank you for showing that technique. Lots of depth. Love this.
You are a great teacher. Very easy to understand and follow. Nothing that you teach is complicated. Thank you very much Sir.

Thank you for the enlightenment! I always thought you were supposed to block in dark and add layers on that. I'll try your way next time!
Thank you for teaching in detail and shove as example.....
You are welcome!

This is the tutorial I need. You really need so much patience when painting realistic trees and it's all worth it. Thank you.
Very cool Michael! I'm starting my journey in acrylic (for now) but definitely got some very good tips from this. 😀
Hey Michael this was so helpful thank you so much for putting this video out, I’m gonna try to practice these tips now and try a landscape. Beautiful work 😊👍
Absolutely amazing!
The trees looked like a photo. I love realistically painted, uhm...paintings.

Congratulations on 1 Mio subscribers. What an ideal point to start a tutorial series on how to paint like Albert Bierstadt
So helpful! Thank you!
Beautifully done! Thanks for your video!
The painting is so fantastic. It is so realistic.
I’m using your techniques in felt painting, thank you!

Incredible realism !! Thanks for the upload Michael
Amazing how he makes those little blobs of paint look like leaves 😍
I love this method for drawing bushes and trees, though the highlights - as light "dots" - remind me of allergies (hay fever). :)
Michael, you have the patience of a saint😊.
Thank you so much for sharing your skills with us. It's a great lesson 😊 for all of us to learn. ❤❤

Thank you so much! That way makes perfect sense, so much so it's almost like why didn't I think of that haha. This is going to help my noobie paintings a lot!
Thank you for the explanation on the 3 colours as I never understood your following order. It seemed opposite of what I did, but now I understand :D
It’s just 🎉so gooood! Happiness and joy 🤩 to watch !!

Excelente , me encantó 👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Muchas gracias. Espero muchos más como este 👍😍
Astonishing... Perhaps this is the word I was looking for ...
MJS underpainting is more realistic than most artists' final go.
Not surprisingly, also the step I struggle with the most.
Wow! Thank you, Thank you ,Thank you , for simplifying trees. i work in acrylics will it work with that too ?
when blocking before this video. how long does it take the paint to dry and what dryness are no looking for? like that 3 day kind of dry and I am guessing the blocking is not a very wet paint to begin with?

very satisfying to watch!
Would you recommend your special tree brushes for acrylic paints also?
