My husband and I are literally sitting right now in the tempura bowl restaurant in Kyoto and it is as delicious as Mark's orgasmic egg reaction made it seem. We had the exact tendon bowl he ordered and by god the whole thing was amazing. We also showed the chefs and the waitresses this video and they were so excited and had no idea they were featured on a UA-cam video with over 1 million views. Thanks for the recommendation Mark!!
I love Japan. I went there during March for school exchange programme at Nara college and didn't get to explore around. Japanese friends are really friendly and welcoming. After watching your videos I really want to go back there again soon!
The pure joy on your face when you taste something incredible cracks me up on every vid I have watched so far. Keep up that joy and striving for the best taste of everything.
Nice to see some of your natural smiles and appreciation of the food. Your wife is lovely, so cute the way she laughs. Look forward to more episodes like this!
I love your programs Mark. Your presentation is excellent. Your enthusiasm, energy and zest for life and your enjoyment of good food is so nice to see. Your wife Ying is a lovely lady and your little Micah? Oh my word he is so cute and good with the travelling hey. Really lovely. You must come to South Africa.
You are the man, Mark! Such honesty and humble nature in your videos. My girlfriend and I are huge fans. After looking through just about every travel channel on UA-cam, I gotta say, you are the ONLY one I can watch consistently. Keep up the great work! I hope you head to India at some point, I would love to see you guys outside of SE Asia.
On this day, exactly 12 months ago, we were also in Kyoto... however, we spent most of the day navigating the train stations and only got to enjoy a couple of the sights. It was still memorable, though. Had nice oden somewhere in Arashiyama. I love the virtual tour and the food as well. Thanks, Mark.
I’m jealous I want to go to Kyoto so bad it’s absolutely beautiful, that’s what I love most about Japan is different parts has it’s own beauty you can appreciate like paintings in a museum
Kyoto station is huge. Love the architecture. I spent 3 days in Kyoto in 2010 and really loved the tranquil feeling there. Kiyomizu-dera was a highlight of my trip and I actually drank the water from the 3 streams in the temple. I ate a couple of times at the Porta area and was quite surprised at the sheer variety of restaurants. That tempura set reminded me of what I get at a chain restaurant called Tenya. So good. I've stayed in rooms with tatami mats and futons and its a must experience for any visitor to Japan.
I love Mark and his wife Ying and their son Micah! OMG, I love how when he visits certain places he makes people want to go there just to explore the food. However, what I love more than that is how he actually goes to rural areas and sees how the locals live, and cook their food. He actually takes the time to get to know these people and see how they live their daily lives. These people love Mark they welcome him every time and it’s so awesome how he brings his son with him and they love Micah like he is their own. He shows his son to be open to all races and religions I love it and I love how he shows us that there is nothing to be afraid of, they are humans too and we should travel to see how other cultures of people live. We need more love in this world and I just want to thank Mark and Ying for doing just that. ❤️
keith0716999 I believe they boiled it first. i have tried tempura random things. With hot oil i find it frying up faster than flour. i wonder how tempura candy bar will taste like..
Thanks Mr and Mrs Wiens for a fascinating journey into the reality of Japan and her food .The food looks absolutely delightful and delicious.I do have to wonder how my husband, all 290llbs of body building monster would cope with the food portions in Japan he would be eating multiple portions and would horrify the locals-which he does without effort here in Chelsea London.Your vlogs are excellent and gripping and able to get to the heart of most peoples' journey and exploration, value for money and interesting schedules,as an outsider in London this can be daunting and more so seemingly in Japan-but you and Mrs Wiens do it so well. Its funny,I have discovered Japan and Japanese food through the eyes of a Thai just absolutely marvellous ,now as ever more please.
+Maria das Santos Hi Maria, thank you for all your support. Haha, they do have some really huge portion restaurants in Japan as well, that would be cool, I'm sure he would enjoy those! Thank you for all your kindness and hope you have a wonderful day.
Another excellent travel / food video. I've been fascinated with Japanese culture since I was 6 years old and living on Kauai. I was invited to practice Judo by a classmate and the rest is history. I hope to get to Osaka and Kyoto some day. I stayed in the Ginza section of Tokyo for 4 days in the 1990's. Your coverage of the train stations was super cool. Incredible high tech architecture and eye candy everywhere. The vending machine front end for the restaurant was really interesting. I remembered there were an almost freakish amount of vending machines in Tokyo and I think the Japanese were 10 years ahead of the US with the canned coffee craze. But in Tokyo they had hot coffee in cans from vending machines. For first timers - B careful - it's really hot. That tempura looked wickedly good. I've never seen a tempura egg !! So Mark congrats on this one, really well done. Cheers -
I am so happy you got a chance to go to Kyoto... so many shrines and temples to see, but Ginkauji is my fav... rustic and simple compared to Kinkakuji which is all coated gold, but the garden is so impressive... giving me such a ZEN moment, surrounded by peace of nature. Tempura place you had gone to says 'Ginza Hage Ten', so probably a branch of Tempura stores of Ginza, Tokyo. Tempura batter makes the food so tasty and crispy, most of restaurants do not want to give out the batter recipes, it's a business secret lol ... I remember I stayed in a very simple Japanese hotel like that in Hiroshima... tatami straw mat, yukata robes and futons.... fun experiences I am sure! Can't wait for your next vlog, thank you! x
+sen koma Hey Sen, we went to a few more temples over the next few days, and I think I really liked Ginkakuji the best as well, those gardens were hard to beat. Thanks!
Mark Wiens Hey, good to hear you enjoyed your visit there! Many temples are so beautiful and historical, but they can be so crowded with tourits ;) Even so, Ginkakuji really presents the essense of Zen philosphy, which also exists in Tea Ceremony culture in Japan. I would love to visit there when there are not so many tourits (if there is any moment lol) and just spend a couple of hours looking at those white sand in the garden, it would be so worth it! :)
Hi Mark and Ying! Excellent adventure video! I am disabled and I got paid today. So I went to our Thai restaurant "A Taste of Thai". I got a shrimp spring roll and Thai chow main. SOOO good! The main had a delicious sauce to it and I put chilli peppers on every bite of Spring roll. so yum! Everything you ate looked good! I have Japan envy.
it's probably been a lot of work, but I'm really enjoying all of these mini series you've been uploading recently. you've also been uploading a lot more often and I just wanted to say that I'm loving all the videos Mark!
Hi Mark, thanks for the video. Glad that you are enjoying Japan. I don't know if someone has already mentioned this in the comments but Kiyomizu means clear water which is a direct reference to those 3 streams of water that Ying was catching in the cup. I'm sure she can confirm that the water is very clear and pure and refreshing!
more than Any news channels or funny movie channels, i watch your vlog everyday. because i feel good that you show real information of west side in Japan to all of the world. thank you Mark-San.
So great to see you visit Kyoto one of my favorite cities. While there be sure to go to nishiki market which has lots f food to sample. This place is called Kyoto's kitchen.
Mark and Ying, I enjoyed your journey in Kyoto. I agree, I like to save my money for the food. The Gardens were beautiful and greatly appreciate the views. The transit system is amazing! Take care.

Oh my god, I just love the sections of you just showing your surroundings in Japan while travelling. They're almost as good as the food sections themselves!
Hi Mark! I was in Japan back in May/June too. I saw the Ginkaku-ji temple too. Amazing how much care they put into keeping the sand as well as the forest floor clean! Kyoto is a great place to get sweet mochi 'crepes'! I loved that stuff! Did you get any? It was mochi dough with sweet red bean paste inside.
+Peter Hey Peter, good to hear you were in Kyoto as well. I didn't try the mochi crepes, but I did have a piece of mochi, which was very good. That sounds great though!
As a child I always dreamed of going to Japan. I'm now 55 and really don't think I will see it in person but thanks to you I see the wonderful places Japan has and the foods, too. Wish we had smell a vision. LOL Looks yummy.
McWhiskers - He does it constantly. He knows things are hot, but then takes a huge bite of it and acts surprised that it's hot. I think he knows his viewers just like seeing his reaction to that, so he's sacrificing his mouth for the amusement. :-)
A bottomless bowl of the Tempura Ricebowl? Wouldn't that be the best? YES!!!!! You paint a wonderful picture of food and scenery no matter where you and Ying go.
Mark & Ying, welcome to my home town Kyoto!! I enjoyed your v-log for this time very much to see you guys in my lovely home town. Kyoto is the best historical city in Japan; so many things and places to see and of course so many tasty foods for you!! Hope two of you enjoyed the great city and looking forward to watching next v-log tomorrow!!
Hi Mark, I've always had an impression that Japan was a super expensive tourist destination but seeing some of the prices on your Osaka and Kyoto vlogs that doesn't seem to be the case. I've always been told that prices in Japan is either twice or three times the cost of that of the USA. What has been your impression of the cost of visiting Japan? Thank you for your daily vlogs! I look forward to watching them everyday.
+TheBlkzenki +Wayne Samuel I love eating sushi here in California so I was surprised to see how reasonable the prices were compare to the US; not to mention tastier and fresher! Public transportation seems very reasonable too. Perhaps Japanese merchandise are more expensive compared to their food and transportation.
+Kevin P Hey! I lived in Japan for a bit. It is possible to visit Japan on a budget, and if you do the most expensive thing will probably be the flights. You can stay at hotels for 170-300 a night in the cheap range. Food can range but Japan is a restaurant filled country with a lot of options. Also, combinis and Yoshinoya are awesome options for >700 yen (5USD?) a meal. If you stay relatively close to your hotel, then the metro/train/bus passes should cost under 10$ a day (assuming you're using it 2-4 times), if you go quite far it can cost more. After that, it depends what you want to do, shopping for clothes and gifts/souvenirs is very expensive in my experience.
+Kevin P cost of living is very affordable in Japan. you can get a studio apartment for $500 a month within walking distance to stores and trains. especially now with the strong dollar. great time to travel to Japan. if you take a look at hotel prices in Japan for say Osaka or Tokyo, you'll see many, many economical options under $50 a night. hard to find these prices in the US even.
+belovedpeartree it really depends on individual but yes, it could be more expensive to get around because there is not many train lines like Tokyo. The food and scenery will make it worth it :D
That temple that you said was a nice selfie spot, was where Samurai used to jump from, if they survived the fall they were meant to have a long and lustrous life. I have been there and the drop is pretty intense. Also it is a water temple, so fitting you visited it on a day when it was raining. Great video!
+Carmela Guanzon Hi Carmela, mostly because I thought the video was getting too long. But I could. For the tempura meal we had almost the same meal, but for lunch she had a katsu curry.
Tracy Ryan I think she's shy probably it will take time I think she's adapting to it we kinda seeing her more than usual. She looks a nice girl very cultured I think
Did the 700 yen locker last you all day or just for a couple of hours? If it's for whole day, that's very cheap coz it's only around 6 bucks. In my country, that price is only for 1-2 hours.
Hi Mark and Ying! The tempura looks really delicious..the crispyness and the egg..wow..that just an awesome meal..I love tempura..sometime I do make at home when I do..I cook a lot of tempura..of course with rice..That's a really nice view..a lot of place to go to..The hotel is simple pretty basic..Japanese style love that..Thanks mark and ying for taking us on ur journey..nicely done! Elwyn
Just a heads up for those who are also looking to leave their luggage in Kyoto - there is a manned luggage storage service in Kyoto station itself which is actually slightly cheaper than the lockers that is not too far from the locker room. It also saves the hassle of trying to find lockers which tends to be somewhat narrow too. It is also useful if you are looking to store your luggage overnight, as lockers are emptied overnight.
please upload more videos, it's never enough for me to watch cause it's so great !! i hope you can come to Singapore and taste our fantastic food here, i'm glad to take you around !!
Really nice video Mark. It's much easier for me to travel with you than actually going there. I can let you get lost rather than me getting lost. I can get lost in my own home town. When I travel it takes me forever to find places of interest but traveling with you it doesn't take me as long to go from place to place and I don't have the frustration of getting lost. I know I'm missing out but this sure is less expensive and almost as much fun. You and Ying do a great job. Thanks, and keep up the great work. Jon
+Lek Buzzy Hey Jon, thank you very much for watching, and I'm really glad you enjoy our vides - we're happy to get lost traveling around on your behalf ha!
+Mark Wiens wow cool so you living in Bangkok ? my father lives in chiang mai for 15years love north thai never ben japan lol good video be flying to thai in 2mouths stay for 7mouths good videos
I just can't stop getting enough of your videos Mark! Already bought your bangkok guide and got 5 of my friends to buy it as well! Keep up the awesome work :D
Mark do you smoke marijuana? I ask because your eyes are red in every video I see you eating. I'm thinking you must be tired from traveling but I wonder...
My husband and I are literally sitting right now in the tempura bowl restaurant in Kyoto and it is as delicious as Mark's orgasmic egg reaction made it seem. You have to love Mark's enthusiasm! Love seeing his reactions to Kyoto!
Gorgeous. Rain, temple, tempura, guesthouse. WHY IS JAPAN SO GORGEOUS GAHH
I sincerely hope you never grow weary of making these, Mark. I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching your travels and eats! Best to you and Ying!

I appreciate you and Ying not only helping us discover where we want to go in the future but also discovering my own country, Japan. Fantastic!
I have never seen anyone enjoy ethnic food so much. You have the zest for life and Ying is quite to go along all the way.
You are the man, Mark! Such honesty and humble nature in your videos. My girlfriend and I are huge fans. I honestly cannot get over his facial expressions after every mouthful of food he eats lol.
+GilesWestbrook7 It speaks so much louder than words.
+GilesWestbrook7 Don't forget when he goes "Oh oh oh oh ho ho ho." when he knows it's gonna be good.
+GilesWestbrook7 I think someone should make a compilation of all of his same reactions after he tries something good.
+slavik626 I was seriously considering doing this! I'm surprised no one has done this before!
+AsianInGlasses I concur!
everything in Japan is so beautiful. The people there make it a point for it to be that way.

Hi Mark,
thanks for the video. Glad that you are enjoying Japan. I don't know if someone has already mentioned this in the comments but Kiyomizu means clear water which is a direct reference to those 3 streams of water that Ying was catching in the cup. I'm sure she can confirm that the water is very clear and pure and refreshing!
+jase8au Oh, thank you so much for the information, makes a lot of sense!
Mark's joy is infectious! I always end up smiling and happy if I'm having a bad day after these videos! (and really hungry haha) :D

So great to see you visit Kyoto one of my favorite cities. While there be sure to go to nishiki market which has lots f food to sample. This place is called Kyoto's kitchen.
+TabiEats Thank you, yes we did make it to Nishiki for a few hours, great market!
Tempura is as close to heaven as I will ever get.
Mark and Ying, I enjoyed your journey in Kyoto. I agree, I like to save my money for the food. The Gardens were beautiful and greatly appreciate the views. The transit system is amazing! Take care.
+Tess Cooks 4u Thank you Tess!
In Burmese kyats we like to say: add an additional zero to every Yen, for example if it's 700JPY, add another and it's 7,000 kyats.
Japan is expensive but so worth it from the looks of your vlogs. Definitely on my bucket list, thanks Mark!
the expression u give after u eat delicious foods are priceless. never fail to make me laugh hahaha.
I'm off to Japan Center after watching this. Mark is delivering good stuffs here. Awesome!
+Thiha Min Enjoy!
That moment your family thinks your watching "x-rated content" around 12:41 xD
Your videos are awesome, please keep doing more! My wife never watches food vids but she's watching yours with me. I'm happy.
Next year in May I also go to Kyoto! Can't wait :)
As a child I always dreamed of going to Japan. I'm now 55 and really don't think I will see it in person but thanks to you I see the wonderful places Japan has and the foods, too. Wish we had smell a vision. LOL Looks yummy.

I am big fan of you mark keep eaating
Your Japan blogs are awesome! They totally take me back ten years ago when i lived there for three years. The food oh wow, so so miss the food.
man, youve been burning your mouth a lot during this japan trip LOL
Japanese have strange culture of eating food while it's piping hot
McWhiskers - He does it constantly. He knows things are hot, but then takes a huge bite of it and acts surprised that it's hot. I think he knows his viewers just like seeing his reaction to that, so he's sacrificing his mouth for the amusement. :-)
Michigan Mister I like to cool down things though. I can't taste anything when it's piping hot.
i'm aware of japanese food culture and i'm not complaining about it lol its funny and i noticed it happening frequently. no need to get defensive.
Wow this is awesome to see how the world is , lives and eats.
The way he drowns in the taste of the food... shows his innocence.
A bottomless bowl of the Tempura Ricebowl? Wouldn't that be the best? YES!!!!! You paint a wonderful picture of food and scenery no matter where you and Ying go.
+JANICE BALL Thank you, that would be great!
Next you should visit fushimi-inari temple! its a remarkable place to visit with those 1000 of 鳥居(torii) really beautiful :)

Ooooh, oh, oh, the yolk just squirted...lol
Mark, I really enjoy your videos. You communicate so well and the photography is excellent! Thanks for sharing.
+Kevin P everything seems to be under $10 witch is odd to me compared to america
+Kevin P fruits in Japan are expensive. Like melons can cost over $30 and more for one. Or the price for a watermelon would be outrageous.

I’m ready to go to Japan! Looks so good Mark, you and your wife do a great job!
You have to cover Hokkaido next Mark! It's a FOOD PARADISE!!
+Fate Audax this!!
+Fate Audax food in Hokkaido seems a lot more expensive, that is my impression. or am I wrong?
+Fate Audax I'd love to visit Fate
+belovedpeartree it really depends on individual but yes, it could be more expensive to get around because there is not many train lines like Tokyo. The food and scenery will make it worth it :D
Very well documented! Enjoyed watching you every bite you took Japanese food!
You're funny dude...lo,l your facials are classic. You like to accentuate your "T"s at the end of a sentence (Actually most of your letters)
That temple that you said was a nice selfie spot, was where Samurai used to jump from, if they survived the fall they were meant to have a long and lustrous life. I have been there and the drop is pretty intense. Also it is a water temple, so fitting you visited it on a day when it was raining. Great video!
+Mung Ah, excellent, thank you for the information, and appreciate your watching.
The steamed bun is pretty expensive though.
I know right?
+石神かずき There's a Vietnamese version, almost exactly the same except with half and egg in the middle....
I think because it's a tourism place, but still expensive
I've been watching your videos for a very long mark and you have an amazing UA-cam channel . Keep up the great work . 👍🏾
MARK WHY YOUR NOT SHOWING YINGS FOOD? DONT YOU THINK ITS AN ADDITIONAL INFO IN YOUR FOOD VLOGS?
I fully agree with you!
good idea
+Carmela Guanzon Hi Carmela, mostly because I thought the video was getting too long. But I could. For the tempura meal we had almost the same meal, but for lunch she had a katsu curry.
+Mark Wiens oh ok.. Is it your wife Ying don't like to seen on Camera? You got a pretty wife, should her on Camera.
Tracy Ryan I think she's shy probably it will take time I think she's adapting to it we kinda seeing her more than usual. She looks a nice girl very cultured I think
I LOVE when you post every morning!
+Sarah Ko Thank you Sarah

Not bamboo but Igusa which is Rush grass.
Your videos makes me wanna live longer and explore the world thoroughly!!! Love your videos to the Moon and back!!!!

+Phìlìpp Kn Thank you Philipp!
I didn't want this video to end!!! Oh that ten don looked phenomenal!
Did the 700 yen locker last you all day or just for a couple of hours? If it's for whole day, that's very cheap coz it's only around 6 bucks. In my country, that price is only for 1-2 hours.
+allmyjm When I visited Kyoto, the locker was all day!
+allmyjm It might have been better to stay in the locker rather than that hotel room
LOL. The tatami is not too bad. ;)
+allmyjm Yes, all day.
Thanks for responding as always, Mark!
I love the sharing from the site seeing and your comments of the great looking food!
Now we know what he sounds like b4 he nutz lmao!
Elwyn
+pnoyride Good to hear from you Elwyn, nice to hear you make tempura at home sometimes too, sounds good!
好きな魚で鯖を選ぶか・・・。俺は日本人だが、俺も一番うまい魚は鯖だと思う。
Grilled Mackerel with Shrimp and veggie tempura is my all time favorite Japanese dish!
you travel alots. i wonder where'd you get the money to spend in so many wonderful journeys.
From UA-cam obviously...
12:49 you mean EGGcellent? hahaa... man I need friend
please upload more videos, it's never enough for me to watch cause it's so great !! i hope you can come to Singapore and taste our fantastic food here, i'm glad to take you around !!
+Gan Zi Jian Thank you Gan, really appreciate it. I'm hoping to come to Singapore soon.
Do pm me if you are coming, i will help you with your stay here in Singapore !
inshould have not clicked the video. ita 8:34 am here n the US. now im hungry
those trips to japan are just awsome!
6 dollars for a locker is not bad at all!! Don't be a cheapskate

I just can't stop getting enough of your videos Mark! Already bought your bangkok guide and got 5 of my friends to buy it as well! Keep up the awesome work :D
+Sabik Rahim Big thank you Sabik, really appreciate it!
I'd like his videos a lot more if he weren't staring directly at the camera at all times. It's just so unnatural.
It's a bit scary haha
Itz like a fake expression and i kinda hate it
+suresh k how could u judge ppl? by saying his expression is fake?
its unnerving....I look away when he look straight a the camera or when he does his foodgasm look. Like his video though, learned so much from it.
If someone looking directly at you makes you uncomfortable, it's you who has the problem...
you know what, what I amazed you the way you express your face for the. food taste
+Janrich Paglinawan Thank you Janrich
Mark do you smoke marijuana? I ask because your eyes are red in every video I see you eating. I'm thinking you must be tired from traveling but I wonder...
Anthony Tran I used to think he's a stoner😂😂😂
Amazing as always! The tempura rice bowl with egg got me going YUMMY!!!
