00:20 Train to Saga Arashiyama - The Arashiyama area is home to some of the most famous attractions in Kyoto, and so we took the train there in the morning. Unfortunately it was a very rainy day, so instead of going straight to the temple we instead decided to have lunch to see if the rain would clear.
1:38 Kyoarashiyama Ine (嵯峨とうふ 稲 本店) - This is a very famous restaurant in this area of Kyoto, and I think they specialize mainly in tofu and most of what they serve is even vegetarian Japanese food - with the exception of some eggs I think. I ordered the, Nonomiya Set, which cost 1,950 JPY ($16.22). It included all sorts of different Japanese vegetarian dishes including all sorts of tofu and the famous yuba, Japanese tofu skin. I did enjoy the entire Japanese vegetarian tofu meal, but all the food was a little on the plain side for me. However, it was still very nice, the presentation was beautiful, and the quality was outstanding.
8:43 Tenryu-ji Temple - 500 JPY ($4.16) - After our Japanese tofu lunch we continued on to the Tenryu-ji Temple, and it was still raining, but not nearly as hard as before. The temple is known for having one of the oldest Japanese gardens, and so that’s what I was really interested in seeing. It was quite beautiful.
9:47 Path of Bamboo - Located in Arashiyama, near the Tenryu-ji Temple is one of the most picturesque places and attractions in all of Kyoto, the Path of Bamboo - it’s a pathway that leads through a bamboo forest. The scene is quite beautiful, and definitely a good place to take some photos and enjoy nature.
11:29 Kinkaku-ji Temple - One of the final things we wanted to do in Kyoto on this day was visit the Kinkaku-ji Temple, and so we took a series of buses to get there, which all worked out smoothly. The Kinkaku-ji Temple was incredibly busy, so it wasn’t nearly as nice as it could have been had it been quiet and peaceful.
14:10 Japanese Supermarket Dinner - Finally for dinner, we headed back to our area of Kyoto, and we stopped by at a supermarket and bought some things to eat back at home. It’s fun to eat at restaurants, but it’s also really fun to buy food from a Japanese supermarket and eat it as well - there are so many good things to eat.
Thank you for watching Day 9 in Japan, where we did some attraction sightseeing in Kyoto, and also did some eating.

Hey Mark, I'm Japanese and I just wanted to explain to you the tofu meal and dessert that you had in Kyoto. The tofu meal you had is reminiscent of what a Monk would have eaten and still eat for his or her meals hence the vegetarian style with mild soft flavors of the ingredients, and the soft egg pudding type thing you had is indeed made from an egg and called Chawan Mushi (steamed bowl) and whats usually inside is something called Ginnan (gingko nut). In that soup you had where something was floating, that thing that was floating in there is called Ofu (not a typo of Tofu) I believe is made from soybeans as well although i've never learned how they are made.
Usually we eat tofu meals with something called Ponzu which is a mix of rice vinegar, soysauce and sometimes hints of yuzu mixed in with either green onions and ginger. Lastly the dessert you had is called Warabi Mochi and the powder that was on it is called Kinako, if you google these words you'll find out how they are made and recipies for it.
If there is anything you would like me to explain or translate amongst your other Japanese foods, please don't hesitate to contact me, as I'm sure a lot of viewers are curious of the names of the dishes you are experiencing as well as any recipies and ingredients. Keep up the great travels and meals!
+Rinoue1 This is excellent, thank you very much for taking the time to explain. It really was an amazing meal for the quality and care put into everything.
+Mark Wiens Kinako is Soy Bean Flour, there are videos here on UA-cam that talk about it
I thought you are familiar with Japanese food since Japanese restaurants ate plentiful in Bangkok.
+Rinoue - what great information. So helpful, Thank you :-)
Great information. Thank you.
What really attracts me to Marks Videos is his positiveness and appreciation for food and life in general. It does make me happy to see him smiling and making the best out of his opportunities as a human being, creating such an adorable lifestyle.. I love food in the same way and i also express it when i am eating and travelling :)
To save money on bus travel in Kyoto, you can by a 1day pass for just 500 yen. You can purchase the 1day pass at most of the JR rail stations and probably at most of the private stations, too (Hankyu, Keihan, Karasuma). Those one day passes will let you ride on any bus all you want for the whole day so long as it is a Kyoto City bus (there are special private busses, too). The Kyoto City buses should also have the Kyoto city mark on them to make them easy to find. But if you don't know, you can ask the driver "korewa kyoto shi no basu desuka"? Maybe even show them the card and simply ask "korewa okay?"
About halfway between your station and Kyoto station is a station called "Inari" or "Fushimi Inari" station. It has one of the most famous Japanese Shrines. It is most famous for having countless red gates and tons of fox statues. The god Inari uses foxes as messengers and that is his special animal. So most shrines to Inari have that trademark.
For you supermarket food: The first one was a chicken, vegie, and bean burger (ground meat reformed into a patty). Your mystery fish was Mackerel. Mackerel in Japanese is SABA. And if you ever need chopsticks, almost every single groccery store and convenience store will have some. Most will offer you a pair when you buy ready-to-eat food. If not, you can ask "Hashi Onegai shimasu" - Chopsticks please. They will be freely given to you if you are buying food.
Lastly, very close to that temple you went to at Arashiyama there is a popular Monkey Park. It is on top of Mount Arashiyama. It is a very tall mountain that you can hike. As you hike you will see free roaming monkeys. At the top of the mountain (it taller than Kyoto Tower), you can look out over all of Kyoto and interact with the Japanese Monkeys all you want. You can even get some food to give them. I think it only costs 800 Yen or so to do that. I recommend it for your next trip. That and Fushimi were always my favorite parts of Kyoto. Very quiet and peaceful places.
Japanese food is really one of the most amazing food in the world. I love Japanese food and I love tofu too :)
Japanese food aesthetic is the best in the world . Lovely
I love the fact when you actually love something your whole body tells.
I like to see mark take a bite of food and really seem to enjoy it. My baby nephew does the same little head turn thing when he is eating something he enjoys, it's way too cute!
All the places you visited ….that’s where I visited too….bring back good memories….even though the weather wasn’t up to par you still enjoy the visit…I think it was challenging and fun…thanks for taking me back there
Thanks for giving glimpses of beautiful Japan, Mark.
OMG I went to the same restaurant, sat at almost the same seat and ordered the same set like you when I visited Japan 5 months ago. It was a raining day too! Hic hic watching this makes me miss Japan so bad.
I ate at a yudofu restaurant in Kyoto back in 2010 and your tofu meal reminded me a lot of my experience there. Very light and subtle tastes but I still enjoyed it. Eating a selection of foods from a market is a lot of fun as you can try many different things. The tempura and panko fried items as a fave of mine.
My sis was a missionary near Kyoto. She did a lot of teaching in Osaka. I have sent her links from your vlogs.
+bgishy So cool to hear that, thank you!
The bamboo forest was absolutely breathtaking and the rain really seemed to compliment the pond. Japan has true natural beauty.
I'm really amazed by your confidence Mark, You're just casually taking trains, buses, taxis without any fear of getting lost. How do you know when to get off if there is no signs in English?
Research beforehand probably
+Jacky Tran You can read at each train or subway stop, it is usually written in Romaji the name of the station. Also, there are english maps for subways, bus and train lines available at the airport and in hotels and such. :) At first, the subway system is pretty daunting but after a day, you get used to it quickly.
+Jacky Tran
lol... you just travel around; ask people, show map? If you have 4g or wifi, then google maps help you a lot in developed countries... Tells u all the public transportation and direction.
+My Name is Not Hmm, but im not only talking about countries like Japan. He does the same thing in the Vietnam, Philipines and etc. Its amazinggggg a
Jacky Tran
well his wife is from Thailand, and her family lives there. It's easy to travel around the world. I know a guy who travelled through mongolia to Europe with bike. Might be challenging for teenagers since they are not fully grown ups.
Another fun video! That Tofu lunch platter is so fine and beautiful :) Yes Tofu meals do not come with exptremely spicy ingredients, so you might have missed that part lol but all small dishes there looked quite healthy and sophisticated. The one you tried as your dessert is probably some kind of mochi? The brown nutty powder must be Kinako powder, roasted soy bean flower, I miss that a lot, one of my fav sweets in childhood!
The ones you thought as chicken meatballs at your hostel are Tofu meatballs, at least that's what said on the package, very creative! Yes it is a lot of fun to get those meals from supermarket stores or convenient stores and make your own combination platters.. I often got those also just to add something nice and convenient to the meal I had prepared at home also.
Kinkakuji... wow! The most popular site, together with Kiyomizu temple for sure, but.... yes too crowded during the day :p I still love Ginkakuji best.... and also I enjoyed seeing bamboo forest.... actually it was nice to walk on a cool day like that.. imagine if you go there early in the morning, must be so beautiful and peaceful! Thanks for the share, can't wait for your next video!
yes kinkakuji is great
+sen koma Haha, I guess it was just meant to be a tofu day - with those meatballs too! I'm with you and Ginkakuji, I really enjoyed the gardens there. Thank you for your continued support!
+Mark Wiens Now you are Tofu Connoisseur :) Tofu is not my most fav food in Japan, it does not have strong taste! But my mom used to give me tofu every single nite, saying it's so healthy and packed with protein lol But I think if you know tofu, and cook it right, it turns out very fine meal. My boy loves miso soup with lots of little cubes of tofu and seawood, goes so well with miso :)
I am a Japanese. If you visit to Japan, I recommend you visit to Japanese department store. There are many side dishes and sweets shops at the underground "Depa Chika" in Japanese department stores. Super recommend for foreign visitors.
Watching your videos always makes me hungry.. 😍
He finally gets an umbrella and poor Ying is stuck carrying it.
Wonderful video! I ate at that tofu restaurant as well, but I think I had a slightly bigger meal as I had a little bit of shrimp with mine and a few extra things, plus the tofu in the hot pot comes with unlimited refills, but my husband, my friend and I could only manage to eat one refill. I do think this was almost a completely vegetarian meal except for one thing: That little pink flower on top of the block of tofu was a piece of fish cake (kamaboko), and of course most soups are made with dashi, which uses bonito flakes, so I guess that's two things. Haha!
Anyway, the last thing I wanted to comment was that I think the dessert was a mung bean jelly and not mochi like people are commenting below. Mochi tends to be opaque from the rice, while acorn jelly and mung bean jelly are translucent. And that is definitely Kinako powder on top. A lightly sweet dessert to suit your tastes since you don't like things to be too sweet. Anyway, great video and thanks for bringing back memories of my honeymoon in Japan!
2020 and I’m still here! Watching these videos1million times!
12:16 I love how you just stop to say hello that was so cute 😂
I thought from the title of the video that you had gone to a real tofu restaurant. You should try and check one out if you can... they're expensive but they're amazing. I am a carnivore... but trust me... the best food I've ever tasted in Japan was a tofu restaurant where every dish contains tofu cooked in different ways from starter to main to dessert. When my wife told me my in-laws were taking me to a tofu restaurant, my heart sank... I was like NOOOO!!! take me for Korean bbq, sukiyaki, sushi, crab nabe, izakaya... anything but a tofu restaurant... but wow.... massive convert.
Japanese are healthy people they don't need a vegan diet to stay healthy. That's why vegan diet is just plain stupid imo. Meat and vegetables, are good for a healthy diet, the Japanese/Koreans got it right.
Veganism is a consequence of being antispecist. It's not a diet to to stay healthy, it's a diet to decrease suffering of animal beings, humans and non-humans.
Holy moly so many ppl at the Kinkakuji Temple. Back in 2010 when I went there the place was practically almost no one, lol.
you could have book a hotel somewhere in central town. japanese are very good in applying ergonomics for their designs.
tofu is also consumed by chinese and it is one of the healthiest food in the world because of proteins. luckily, you had a very healthy vegetarian lunch! that dish coated with nuts is called mochi which is the japanese rice cake and it has also green tea flavour.
The meatball , which you had for your dinner was a chiken, vegtable and tofu mixed meatball. I'ts called Tofu-Hamburg 豆腐ハンバーグ
+Mr.ZontaCraft # And I love your videos :D
Another great video. The women in different kimonos was just amazing. Thanks for sharing.
I'm going to Japan (Osaka and Kyoto) in December later this year. So excited to try out the food! Thanks Mark! Awesome to see Ying travelling with you too! 😄
Wow Japanese food looks outstanding love tofu
I think that he blinked just 3 times during the entire video.
I noticed that too
Lnao
He always looks like he's in severe pain when he eats
Has to keep up the pretence of being human 🤣
I love your honesty when encountered with something you haven't eaten before. I think you do great. I especially love your videos fron Japan,China and Korea. You give a background of the places and people and how they live. We are given a lot of things that don't match up. Seeing is believing. Thank you.
Fyi.i love the ways u use slurping or one biter it's more like down-to-earth type of describing how you're going to eat or how it's going to happen and it's really awesome to hear that
Japanese supermarkets have a huge variety of precooked food items to eat man, its amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
can never go wrong with a piece of fish some soy sauce and rice. I specially enjoyed those cured fish and rice balls very convinient and portable.
The rice patty look so good . everything you bought from the market look so yummy . make mr hungry everytime i watch your video
You can tell when Mark doesn’t like the food when he doesn’t fall to the side and have a huge smile 😅
wowzers the tofu veggie megga meal looked delacate and light....the supermarket has soo much to chose! wow!
It's pretty spot on to say the Japanese get rice right. If you do a search for "only in japan rice" you'll find a little 13 minute video that shows what goes into growing in and the mind set they have about rice there.
Great video! The locations looked amazing.
+Camel Jam Lion Thank you Camel, I will definitely check that out.
my husband and I were here about a month ago. loved it! we actually really enjoyed the dishes and thought they were flavorful and soothing. our favorite was the kumiage yuba.
Mark your camera has such incredible depth of field!
David strikes again
+DavidParody Thanks David, most of this video is filmed at f2.8.
Im glad that I saw a vegan experience 🌹 thank you!
"Very wobbly something!" Just the best Mark!
Answering the comments is great! After looking many videos I can see in your face if you like it or if you think it's 'interesting' :-) Great job! Thank you for the time I've spent infront of the TV

This is so much fun. Beautiful Kyoto and food - explored by Mark and Ying. Lovely!
I love to watch you and Yings travels I especially like how you emerge yourselves in the day to day functions and travel riding the trains and finding things yourselves versus tour guide ...reminds me of my days in Germany traveling by train and enjoying the cities for myself... Love your channel

+monmonzz agree
+monmonzz Thank you very much, and I will let Ying know. Greetings to your husband as well.
Japan is the world's most advanced vegetarian powerhouse.
I always enjoy stopping off at the local market to do some shopping. Sometimes that's the best way to eat a relaxed meal at the hotel, sort of like the locals!
You have a very expressive face. Make everything tempting. Thanks for this vegetarian experience.
Mark, Great video. Keep up the good work.
Morning Mark, that kind of restaurant is very traditional style of Japanese restaurant. I like that type. not major flavor but health and to me yummy and yes very vegetarian . I have been to the bamboo forest but years ago. I have also been to the golden pavilion. its a nice place but you went there with a ton a Chinese by the look of it.That's smart to buy from the convenience store premade food, it's cheap AND CHEARFUL . Thank you mark enjoyed the video
Simply breath taking.
Tofu meals are my favorite ! This food is not meant to be spicy, it is all very subtle and refined tastes, close to nature.
Many thanks Mark fot this japanese tour. Thank you
I absolutely adore all of your videos - especially the Korea series. Just wanted to let you know that eggs are considered a vegetarian item because if they’re not fertilized they will never turn into an animal. It’s not vegan but it is vegetarian. Happy eating! btw if you made a t-shirt with a cartoon asian guy saying “Oh, Wow!” I would totally buy it!!!
Good quality video thank you keep up the great work.
Wonderful video Mark!Thanks for sharing.
dude loved this video very much .i enjoyed it very much .
he look sooooo happy while eating
That brown powder in that last dish of your tofu meal was probably a roasted ground soybean powder called kinako. It is mixed with sugar and eaten on boiled mochi also.
yes the Golden Pavilion is so famous and originated from one of the Ashikaga Shogun in 1397. so popular that i would try and not visit during tourist days. too crowded.
Good job, give good detail for traveler who planning to Japan.
Yessss great video Mark!
Kimono girls are soooo beautiful. Thank you for sharing your amazing trip. xx

i ate this same exact meal in the same restaurant and even sitting in the same seat!!!
Great video Mark! The Japanese restaurant maybe didn't have the most flavorful food however, the plates, bowls and utensils were absolutely gorgeous!
Nobody does it like the Japanese in presentation. Their Table Ware, Table Scapes and food packaging are pure artistry.
+Cheryl S. Thank you Cheryl, definitely a really nice place, and I really appreciated it for the authenticity and presentation - amazing.

Wow, you guys did exactly what we did in the video. Everything from the bus route to the order of places you visited... only in reverse! It was sunny for us though, and we didn't eat at the same restaurants, but still! Same temples!

The jelly one , that is make from some kind of bean or roof and the power is green bean power
i think that his expresions when he eat are cool¡¡
engulfed by the city is keninji temple, shere dogen and myozen and esai walked. Its off the beaten path.
Was there last year at the exact same restaurant. Frankly like you mentioned, the presentation was great but the taste were on the mild side. While watching, my wife and I waited for your yummy face reaction on the tofu skin 😃 given the fact that you like things spicy.
Nice video mark, when I went Kyoto it rained non stop top.
Mark, I cracked up when u said at 14:50 that those look like meatballs when I could see on the label that the dish was made with veggies and tofu ... (with chicken). 😂 More tofu for u. I thought that meal u had at the restaurant looked fantastic. A soya meal! Love it!
Sorry to hear about the accidental vegetarianism--- wouldn't have happened on my watch!
+Bangkok Fatty lol i have to laugh reading your comment.
LOL LOL LOL freelee would murder you oh my god
flyingvigil f**k you
florence cipher f*** you
I really just love how happy you are all the time it makes your videos a million times better, I have a question thought is there anything you don't like e.g food
the one you ate at the very last is actually tofu hamburg !! no meat in it :)
