My Puppy Got Lyme Disease & I Didn't Treat It...
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 сер 2019
- I can't believe the little Bear pup contracted Lyme Disease. These things do happen especially in an area where Lyme is so prevalent like the Northeast. This video tells the story of Bear's Lyme diagnosis as well as how I went about gathering information and treating him. Please know that I am NOT a vet and I am NOT giving you advice on how to treat your pet. I also know that many of you will ask: Bear is a Newfoundland pupper also known as a Newfie or Newf!
STAY TUNED for Mail-Time @ the end (and my injury).

YES, I definitely want to be informed about LYME DISEASE. Please make the video.
Yes please do! My sister has had chronic lyme disease for about 9 years.
WILLIE ZERO I agree!!! This is SO important! Especially on the east coast!
In New York, we have to treat our clothes with permethrin to go on hikes in the woods. I found 4 ticks on myself today - the very very small kind that look like flecks of dust - and I haven’t been anywhere but my house and our on my front lawn. Everyone I grew up with has had lymes, and my dad has actually had 3 tick borne diseases and some facial paralysis. My neighbors got a puppy and when we were puppy sitting her, we pulled 40 ticks off of her at the end of the day. She had to get medication even though she wasn’t old enough.
I agree! Please do a video with the details of Lyme disease
I had Chronic Lyme Disease for 15 years. Showed up positive multiple times (months to a few years at a time) after extensive antibiotic treatments (oral and IV). I even showed positive for Babesia duncani (never having showed positive before) 12 years after my first positive test result for Borreliosis burgdoferi - oh and I lived in Texas the whole time. Lyme was a true nightmare for me while growing up. I'd love a video on it though!! Haha
@Mr. & Mrs Smith Lol, it's been like that ever since Lyme was first discovered - despite the overwhelming cases that otherwise speak against this, including my own battle with Lyme. Hopefully, the AMA will change their position in the next decade

This would be very interesting. Since my mom developed epilepsy from TBE because a tick bite wasn't treated the right way when she was about 4 years old. Luckily she doesn't have epilepsy anymore since she is 18 years old.

@@vivianamarin9166 I don't know where he lives now but it may be an area where Lyme is not usually seen. The vet may not be super familiar with treatment protocol with Lyme. The same literature is something vets also have access to, so I can't say if the vet offered to look into it for him or if he just decided to look into it himself. But I wouldn't be surprised if he doctors his own pets because he doesn't respect vets based on a previous video he posted.

Dr. Mike I would love to see an informative video on Lyme disease in humans. Again I am happy your amazing Little Bear is good now. I've known loved ones who have contracted this disease. Some have not been as fortunate as others in a timely diagnosis, and sadly even have been told the symptoms were just in there head until they found the right doctor. I am so glad there has been more research over the years. Thank you for fighting the good fight in spreading knowledge, listening to your patients, and sharing your furry angel with the world. As always, I wish you and Bear the bestest.
Dr Mike! You should collab with a veterinarian! (Someone like Dr.Evan Antin?) it’s be so cool to see a people doctor and an animal doctor compare and contrast their life in the medical field!

Hey Dr. Mike-a vet here. Some of us call that ACVIM statement the “nonconcensus” statement. There has been some recent info about sub clinical inflammatory joint disease in Lyme exposed, non-clinical cases, so my recommendation has been to treat all Lyme positives. This is a very controversial topic among veterinarians. BTW there is a yeast probiotic called Mycequin that I have been Rx-ing along with doxy, and have seen less GI upset during these long doxy courses.
Tom Hirth hhhhhooollyyyyyy one day ima know what you just said
electriX
As a layman, I think he's saying that he disagrees with the ACVIM statement, he treats all Lyme positives and commonly prescribes a certain probiotic along with doxycycline (an antibiotic) to treat Lyme disease symptoms.
Young ADV IMHO you have it right. I would just add 1 clarification: the probiotic is to minimize gastrointestinal upset caused by the antibiotic, not to treat the Lyme itself.
Personally, I would count a diagnosis of Lyme disease before any symptoms appear as a blessing and treat it right away. It means that it was caught before it had a chance to cause damage.
Do u have a channel????
When I was in hospital, they gave me a therapy chicken to pat and I also met therapy dogs. They helped me so much, and seeing you let Bear go give other people like me joy is really special ❤️

As a vet tech I believe that clients that self educate on illnesses their pets are dealing with is important and fantastic AS LONG AS IT IS QUALITY RESEARCH not just a quick Google and basing your information on the first thing you read. Not all sources are reliable or applicable. I'm happy you did it the RIGHT way.
I'm your 100th like!!
We need more people like this guy!
As someone with ME/CFS, which is also an illness with a lot of controversy and misinformation surrounding it, I'm always in support of getting good information out there about any disease that's in a similar place! Just be sure that you have the latest information...so many doctors don't even realize they're out of date on these things.
As a veterinary technician in general practice and emergency medicine, I have seen easily over 100+ cases of lyme disease just within the past 3 summer months. Many cases of lyme disease go undetected, unless the patient is symptomatic or yearly screenings are performed. Only 10% of seropositive cases are symptomatic. A point-of-care test for lyme disease can be positive if your pet has been exposed to lyme disease or has received a preventative lyme vaccine. This is why having a Quant C6 test performed is so important! A positive point-of-care test doesnt always correlate with active infection, so treating a patient with antibiotics that isn't infected can cause antibiotic resistance and is generally not necessary. I can't stress the importance of keeping a pet on year-round flea and tick preventative to avoid infection, especially in endemic areas. It's a misconception that ticks aren't active in the winter. Ticks love warmth, and what's warmer than a nice, toasty house in the winter to hide out in?
As a public service announcement, if you notice your pet develops shifting limb lameness, or basically limping that goes from one leg to another, lethargy, vomiting, inappetance, or joint swelling/tenderness, please talk to your veterinarian about testing for lyme disease. A simple test can literally save your pets life. If your pet is positive for lyme disease, have an open discussion with your veterinarian about running simple blood and urine tests to ensure the disease hasn't caused any damage to the kidneys, also known as lyme nephritis, which is deadly and often not responsive to even the heaviest of intravenous antibiotics, often resulting in a 6 month period of survival after diagnosis. Bonus fun fact: As of right now, there is no definitive studies or evidence showing that cats can develop active infection, even if bitten. I hope this helps someone out there. I'm just very passionate about m y job, and the more pets I can help avoid my emergency room, the better!
