Bear is my Newfoundland that lives with me in my apartment in NYC. While his size and amount of floof might be adorable and lovable, it makes keeping him clean and hygenic a very difficult process. Every few weeks I sit down with Bear and spend hours making sure he's well groomed, from bathing, to shampoo, to soap, then brushing his teeth, trimming his nails, trimming his fur, and the exhaustive process of drying him out. I wanted to share this bathroom ritual with all of you so you could see just how challenging it is to groom my floofy in NYC, but also teach you some helpful tips about caring for your pets should you find yourself with a dog to groom someday.

Bear is the most calm dog I’ve ever seen while grooming
Newfoundland's are known for being calm. In Peter Pan, Nana is actually a Newfoundland. I love these dogs (and Leonbergers) but it's just SO. MUCH. HAIR.
Newfoundland dogs were bred to help fishermen iirc so it's not rare seeing them so calm getting wet
My dogs be barkin and wigeling
The video I watched before this was from dogsbylogan of him washing his poodle puppy. Raiku is so well behaved it's a true gem.
The bigger the dog the more seriously people (tend) to take the training of that dog. That’s why tiny dogs are the worst.
Dr. Mike went to another level of attractiveness seeing him loving and caring for his dog the way he did. OMG My heart melts!
Absolutely true!
bro mike is like 40..
why do you have a crush on him?
weirdo..
@@user-vb7ln5kw5u why does it matter how old someone is?? for all you know they could be the same age, so i dont get how you could possibly think its weird?
when mike was telling bear what he was gonna do, bear was listening so intently its adorable
I did NOT expect his bark to sound so tiny 😂😂
my thoughts exactly 😂😂 i expected like a big booming bark 😭 but it was just "ruff! 😀"

Gotta say, after 10 years as a vet tech, I’m impressed.
Dr. Mike is DEF not a veterinarian, but that dog is more well groomed than 99% of patients I’ve seen.
And now my need for a Newfie has returned.
Lol I love newfs too
But the drool factor…
@@Dharmarenee drool would get everywhere! Constant cleaning 🤣

I love the way Bear just looks at Dr. Mike when he explains everything he is going to do next hahaha, like he is genuinely paying attention, what a good dog
10:03 his bark- it’s so pitched high and small so cute for a big dog ❤
My dog is really short and has a GIANT bark. He is a German shepherd basset hound

So chill, and always gives kisses.
Hi
I'm a dog groomer, and $600 is quite insane. Where I work, we charge about $85 for these kinds of dogs lmao. It's a lot of work but you did well :D
85??? hell no! add 100 onto that for an extra large dog with a long double coat!
My dog groomer charges $65-85 for my chi so I would say $600 is normal especially in NYC with his dog. It's just better to do it yourself unless you really don't have the time.
@@imdone8645 I have a maltese and it costs $60 and the lady comes to my house and cleans up after. I guess bigger dogs are more?
@@junosgladius yes, the bigger the dog the more it costs. 60 is quite reasonable for a maltese.
$210 for each of my Field Spaniels; bus comes to my driveway. But that’s for the full grooming. Not sure what they would charge for a bath and blow-out only
Dr Mike and Bear having the most healthy human-dog relationship 😭
I always did the grooming of my dogs by myself. It was hard, but at the same time I learned a lot and created a sens of trust and a great human/dog relationship with them. I can relate so much to this. Bear show us all the good side of having pets in our day to day life. You stop the time, and you just switch the mode: taking care of a being with love and compassion. More People should start doing this. ♡♡♡
Right. It’s so cute
U mean human and bear relationship

Ok that dogo is adorable
It's really cute but the yawning is a sign of I don't like what is happening and the licking is a sign of you're too close I'm uncomfortable but I trust you and will submit so please don't hurt me. It's not that he's scared of his Dr Mike or anything, he's just letting him know hey this isn't fun I'd rather not but if you insist I will because I trust you. Too many people miss dog yawning as a sign of discomfort and then are the first people to go Hey this dog big me without warning. No he warned you, you just missed it.
Do you need more dogs we have like a gazillion dogs ” and they’re totally not a pain in the butt“
As a groomer I’m happy to see some solid grooming practices and advice. You and Bear have a great connection and a positive energy which makes grooming way easier. Not too sure about the kitchen shears to trim up the butt floof but still not the worst I’ve seen! 😅
As a dog groomer it’s great to see that you actually took the time to learn how to care for your dog’s coat! You did a great job !!

Seriously, grooming a Newfie isn't for the feint of heart. Even for most groomers. Go Mike!
Wait a minute... can we talk about the view out of that bathroom window?!?!??
Used to work as a dog bather at a grooming salon and loved to see everything handled and explained so well. Very nice job.
Facts! I thought I was the only one who noticed that 😆
Same here. Gorgeous views!
I stayed a whole minute appreciating that view like wtf
NO ONE wants to imagine the price of a condo that high up in NYC with that type of view. - mind blown --
Sameeeeee😢
I'm impressed that Bear stayed calm for the entirety of the bath AND that Doctor Mike actually does the bathing lol. I used to bathe my German Shepherd (my old apartment building has a dog grooming room on the ground floor) and it was absolute madness.
Bear is so calm he’s just like a giant teddy bear. Can’t believe you did this for the whole day the patient you have got to give you credit
As a vet student, seeing Dr. Mike treating his cute dog so well makes me really happy! You'd think that's common sense, but as someone who already works with domestic animals, human negligence to animal can really be stressing. Last week there was a poor dalmatian that died from having too many ticks. And it wasn't even his tutor who took him to the clinic, but actually the housekeeper. For a dog to die of ticks, it only means his tutors simply ignored it for too damn long. Animals really don't deserve this...
Wait ain't tics expensive to treat??? How do you ignore a dog? Like that!
@@Silver_wind_1987_ if you take care of your dog as you should, they are not expansive to treat. But with negligence, everything can double the price, as your dog has a high risk of passing away.
How can that poor dog get into such a state? Seriously some humans should not be animal owners. My dad was vigilant about giving my dog his worming tablet and flea/tic ointment, had it on the calendar and everything. I usually brushed the dog, but he wasn’t the biggest fan so did little and often. My dad would clip his nails, but as he was an all black German Shepard, it was hard to see where the end stopped so he had a few trips to the vets with a broken claw, and the vets would cut his other nails as well. (Sometimes it’s better to admit defeat and get professionals to do something). My dog had a ‘shower’ with a hose in the garden when he got stanky in the summer, and if he’d been in the fields, my dad would check for any tics etc. I thought we were doing the basic minimum but apparently not.
@W Mari I know. But we give our dog her flea and tick treatment. Heck she's due for a checkup soon. Ah the dreaded vet visits...Harley didn't like one vet he was a door knob and acted nervous around our dog...which made harley nervous and this absolute dumb@@@@ wanted to muzzle our dog for no reason. Mind you give her carrots and she's your best friend.
@@Silver_wind_1987_ my dog was such a drama Queen at the vets…until the treats came out. And he was only muzzled once because the vet wanted to see if he could fix the nail whilst my dog was still awake/slightly sedated and knew someone could get hurt….let’s keep the need for stitches for both human and drama queen German Shepards to the bare minimum 😂
The fact that Bear started grooming at daytime and lasted a whole day of just grooming until it is nighttime.. just the process of it. Wow
It could’ve been the evening when the sun was still out, but yeah this definitely took a while.
It's evening just look at the shadow and color of background
Take into account that he was also recording this. Set up and any retakes also eat up time =)
And the doctor complains about how much a groomer charges
@@dorkodestrukto He also said he likes doing it! $600 is a lot for anyone wouldn’t you say? $300 per hour? Dr. Mike prefers caring for and bonding with Bears I hope you’re ok with that.

As a doctor and a boxer (in addition to being a UA-camr and a social media content creator as well as a dog dad) Bear no doubt makes Mike happy as he has to save many lives as a doctor, prove his worth in the ring as a boxer, and make interesting content on UA-cam.

Coming from the first video of bear to this one is amazing. He’s huge!
I’m a dog groomer and this is one of the best home grooms I have ever seen. Well done you. I do have a few tips if you want to make it even better and safer than it already is:
1) Get a deshedding tool, I would recommend the equigroomer. This will pull out so much more dead hair without damaging his top coat and leaves beautiful results!
2) When you trim him, instead of bouncing the scissors, keep your hand nice and still. This reduces the risk of injury to Bear, reduces fatigue for you and creates a cleaner cut. I’d also just invest in some cheap but decent doggy scissors!
Other than that, I honestly can’t really fault this groom at all. Home grooms terrify me, as we see the aftermath of the irresponsible ones (deep lacerations, major rashes and infection, severe matting because people only brush the top coat and shave downs on dogs like newfies which should only be the absolute last resort), so seeing this groom was lovely 💜 You’ve clearly invested a lot of time and money into ensuring Bear is well cared for and that you have the correct knowledge to groom him. Seriously, well done from England 💜🐾

You love your dog so much. I appreciate it. You care about him like a father. It is very difficult to manage a dog Narsingh but you make it easy. You have so much patience.
Thanks a lot dear keep it up
Hi I’m a dog groomer! I think this video is amazing at showing at home grooming. The only thing I would recommend is different brushing tools only to save your time. I find it’s much faster using a slicker brush, a deshedding rake, and a metal comb (for checking your work) is the best for brushing out super floofy dogs like yours without taking hours (I made this mistake too before). I also find if you can hold the dryer and brush gently at the same time it helps removing some fur. Everything you were doing (especially with blocking the blade from the dog with the dematting tool) is correct and great I just figured I’d share some time saving techniques with you 🥰❤️
Dr. Mike should collab with Girl With the Dogs
I second this. Really wish you had a nice quality comb!! Also, protect your ears while using the dryer. Otherwise really informative!
I’m rewatching this video again and I would also add that dogs can withstand a higher temperature water than expected. Obviously you shouldn’t use super hot water but having it be warmer then lukewarm is better because they’ll be less cold. Puppies need a higher temperature too
I love that he's so chill and comfortable with all this grooming! Now THAT is trust! What a pretty boy!
This was a fantastic video! Thank you for sharing!!
-I loved the part of bear when he was playing dead then the LOUD PPEEWOOP SOUND CAME INTO EFFECT! LAMOOOO -THE HEARTBEAT AHHHHH

9:08 the most glamorous part of shaving a dog is PEWOOP
He is so calm and well behaved! Great Dog Dad!
Bear is so adorable! 😍 His dad did an amazing job! ❤
As a dog groomer/teacher I really hope you see this and it helps make things even easier for you. Try a Chris Christensen coral brush. It’s great on thick coats like Bear’s. Also the razor blade brush is meant to break mats to make them easier to brush. If you use it too much you can cause more matting to occur. I have other tips too (especially with those scissors), but for an at home job you didn’t too bad and I’m happy to see you take such good care of him ❤
I came here to comment on his scissoring technique lol 😆 I do love that he's trying though. Better than 70% of the customers that walk in our doors.
I don't even have a dog but this was so therapeutic and heartwarming to watch. Thank you Mike for the positive vibes. Bear is absolutely adorable. ❤️

As a professional groomer, I really admire how knowledgeable you are and how much you care for Bear. You made it look so easy! 😊 I have a great groomer, but now I know what is involved! Wow! Impressive.
It takes a real level of trust for an animal to feel THAT comfortable in a vulnerable position! You can see the trust and understanding in that baby bear's eyes! I love seeing the bond the two of you have, and thank you for knowing your dog beyond 'walk and pets'. Showing the animals the devices you will be using on them is INCREDIBLY important in terms of trust. You're awesome!
