Both Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor have a lot to offer. I was recently in Ann Arbor and the streets seemed to be in even worse condition than in GR. I am retired and can't speak to commute times, but I know GR highways can get backed up. I prefer west Michigan for outdoor activities, including winter sports since there is more snow due to the lake effect.
Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo ( rated coolest city in 2022) and Ann Arbor are all thriving, exciting and vibrant but I would say Grand Rapids is the best of them all. Holland is worthy to mention as is Traverse city too
Wow you messed up about Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids is known for medicine. Grand Rapids also has a trademark for being diverse, clean, affordable and artsy. In fact, the largest art event in the world is in Grand Rapids ( Art Prize) Grand Rapids also has over 80 international companies and the largest data center in the USA. So many universities are located actually in the city of Grand Rapids including the doctoral research universities such as Western Michigan University, university of Michigan and Michigan State University
Medical mile is in Grand Rapids and the doctor research university Western Michigan University satellite campus is in heart of Grand Rapids for over 100 years there and play a huge role in the robotics and high tech. Impo
