- Scroll saw tips for beginners. A scroll saw is a great way to get involved in wood work and our top tips are an ideal reference for any scroll saw beginner. We share a few ideas on how to set up your scroll saw. As well as the scroll saw blades we choose to use ourselves. We also give some ideas to help you out with your own scroll saw projects and hopefully it will help you to succeed in the scroll saw projects you undertake. The beauty of the scroll saw is it can be used to make wooden items on its own or it can be combined with other woodworking skills like wood carving to make a wide variety of unique wooden items.

Hi Charles, great to hear from you. Delighted to hear that the video was useful. Blades are always a massive area of interest when it comes to working with the scroll saw. It is also a bit subjective too. We have done a number of videos where we have trialed different blades and shared our thoughts on them.
I work with seasoned hardwood and my preference is the Niqua speed number 9 reverse tooth blade. I have a few different videos that explain the numbers system when it comes to blades and the different T.P.I. etc.

Wood burning is a perfect combination 👌. You can add facial expressions, cut down on carving. Texture feathers, fur etc.
Just burn a piece of wood on 1 side. Flip it over to the bare side no message! Show a friend the other side and wood burn will make their day.
For big signs spiral blades are fine. Your can cut in any direction.
A cheap shoulder iron burner maybe the way to go. Even a blow torch can be good. You brown the wood , then sand. It looks antique.

Lovely video ...I'm wanting to buy a scroll saw what would you recommend it must have on it example pedal or do all scroll saws take the same blades or do some not take just don't want to go and spend without not understanding thank you
I would definitely go for a scroll saw that takes pinless bladed. My scroll saw of choice is the Hegner Multicut 2s and my blade of choice is a number 9 reverse tooth blade, either a Niqua Speed, Niqua Pebecco, Pegas or flying Dutchman.
Half inch is 1.25 cm. Just for new followers. Nice videos as usual 👌

Just started scroll sawing this is a good intro thank you. iam a bit confused with the different speed settings any advice appreciated
Hi Dave, thank you for getting in touch. We are not the best ones for giving advice on variable speed because we have never owned or used a variable speed scroll saw. Our Hegner multicut 2s is single speed so you turn it on and away you go. A few thoughts on this though, a faster speed should give a clean cut and a slower speed should be slightly easier to control. I would try to get the feed speed as fast as possible whilst still maintaining control.
Far easier for those of us who use a single speed scroll saw, don't have to think about these things! It runs at 1440spm all the time, the same as the maximum speed of the variable speed machines. So basically all of our scroll saw work on a variable speed machine would be done on the maximum speed.

How do I know if the blade is too tight or too loose? Is it just something you have to learn to feel or is there some sort of guide to make sure it's done correctly? I just bought a new scroll saw and just opened it up, turned it on and tried to feed some material into the blade, it didn't go as well as I'd hoped. I instantly looked up common mistakes and one of your videos was first in line. This is the third video I've watched of yours and I'm already more confident and have fixed a few minor issues I was having. Thanks for the content. New subscriber for sure.
Hi, great to hear from you and delighted to hear that the videos are proving useful. Blade tension can vary between different scroll saws but each system should have its own method of adjusting tension on the blade. As a starting point I would suggest installing the blade and adjusting the tension until the blade comes to the top of the blade holder. I find that is the optimal position on my Hegner Multicut 2s. However, if you want to find out if it is the same on your machine you can make small tension adjustments and decide if you feel it improves the cut or if too many blades are breaking.

Excellent video for the likes of me the novice scrollsawer. Started 6 months ago and use it every day now as it's addictive. I have an Axminster AT460 which is very similar to your Hegnar machine. I like the idea of the wheel to release and tighten the blade clamp as opposed to the Allen key method. Do you know if this part would fit my machine? I emailed Axminster re the blade clamps splitting at the top ( have broken 8 so far )but no reply so far.Any ideas what may be causing this? Any help would be much appreciated.
Hi Patrick,
Thank you for the positive feedback on the video. I have had a look at your scroll saw and the top blade holder looks very similar to the Hegner. If it is the same then the quick release clamp would be a worthwhile investment to make if you are using the scroll saw every day. I am actually doing a video specifically about the quick release clamp in the coming months. It's a really useful addition if you are doing alot of pierce work and it fits your machine. Only a thought but you could purchase one and if it doesn't fit your machine return it to the seller or resell it yourself.
Would definitely pursue Axminster because this might make a difference to your scroll sawing. Additionally, that seems like alot of blade clamps breaking, they should last better than that. Our quick release clamp is in daily use and has lasted for years.

Thanks for your prompt response and I will take your advice and try to source a quick release clamp. Also look forward to the upcoming video on this. I have been experimenting with the amount of tension that I put on the screw on top to the clamp to see if this reduces the amount of breakages.Have you made a video of 3D scrolling with oak? It is hard work on me and the blades..

Experimenting with different tension is a great idea, find what works best for your and your scroll saw. Axminster might have some information on the best amount of tension etc so I would keep trying to contact them.
Haven't done any videos focusing on 3d scroll sawing in Oak. The arms and shoulders must be burning on projects like those.

What's the easiest way to sand your part after you scroll saw it. Inside edges
Hi Mark, great to hear from you. There are a few different answers to this one. Firstly, we get a fine finish working with a Niqua speed number 9 reverse tooth blade on hardwood that often requires mini or no furt finishing at all. Secondly, if we have any burn marks after scroll sawing these can be removed with a chisel or gouge. Thirdly, you can use files and sand/glass paper to refine the finish. Finally, you can use an oscillating Sander to refine the internal finish you get. For ourselves we would prioritise geyt a great finish during the orig cut to save time and effort.

It may be a silly question but ....would it not make more sense for the dust to be sucked up rather than blown about,thus eliminating the need to wear a mask and less cleaning up?
Hi Ian, the reason that scroll saws have a blower on them is to blow the dust away from the line as you are cutting. This allows you to see the line that you are cutting out otherwise you are basically cutting without the ability to see where you are going. You can indeed add a dust extractor to a scroll saw to reduce dust but this does not deal with the issue of being able to see where you are cutting. I would still recommend using a dust mask and eye protection even if using a dust extractor. Our newer model has a modified blower that blows dust to the side more.

Hi, I have a problem with the wood jumping but it's not from a vibration. But I don't know what it's from really
Hi Cristal, great to hear from you. It could be a few different things. What blade are using? I use a Niqua number 9 reverse tooth blade, it does occasionally jump but it's not too bad. Also what scroll saw are you using? The blade and scroll saw are the first things to look at.
The size of your projects might be another area to consider. Thick wood could be one cause, I use wood that is between 1/2" and 1" thick. Thicker wood can jump more. If you are working on very small projects like jewellery this can be difficult to keep a good grip on and again cause the wood to jump.
Technique can be another area to consider. I hold the wood down with one hand and guide it with the other. Are you feeding the wood to quickly? You need to let the saw do the work, if you force the wood through the saw it can make the wood jump.
If you can't find a solution from all of the above it might be worth buying a scroll saw arm. I use a hegner multicut 2s and they sell an accessory arm that holds the wood down for you. My brother has a similar issue to yourself and we bought the arm for him and helps him massively when using the scroll saw. His issue is he feeds the wood slightly too quickly through the saw because he is used to using a band saw. By using the attachment arm it clamps the wood down. Preventing it from jumping.

BUT how do you get the correct tension???
Adjust the tension rod so the blade comes to the top of the blade holder.
I’ve started doing scroll sawing the machine I have just bought is Axminster obviously there’s no point in me spending a lot of money just for a hobby the problem I find with it is it’s difficult to remove the wood from the blade your machine is obviously pivoted so you can lift it up to remove the work in hand
On the Hegner you just released the blade and pick the piece up that you are working on. Simple and it does the job. It helps if you are using pinless blades too.
@@DailovespoonsThomas yes I think I’m a bit worried of breaking the blade by bending it but I see you do that anyway it’s just a matter of getting a bit more confident and practice
@davidgreenwood5241 if it's a good blade it will be fine. I use the Niqua Speed or Niqua Pebecco number 9 reverse tooth blade. It does a great job working in hard wood. Pegas do their own version too. Give yourself time. As you said its a matter of building up your confidence. Enjoy the process, it's a lovely machine to work with and you can use it to make so many different things. 👍

Will scroll saws cut MFD wood fine? I want to make cuts for a cosplay project.
I cut MDF all of the time. A lot of name sign makers will cut their letters out of MDF.
Hi Michael, the scroll saw will indeed cut materials like mdf. You will probably need a blade that has more teeth per inch than the one we use so the feed speed is not to fast. Once you have the appropriate blade you will be able to cut MDF without too much trouble.

Hi, great to hear from you. We don't use MDF ourselves as we only usually work in hardwood. Any thoughts for Michael in regards to the best blade for cutting MDF. The Niqua speed we use has a fast feed speed and low number of teeth per inch, so not really suitable for cutting hardwood. Any thoughts might help Michael and others out with this.

What is the best way to practice and develop needed skills
Practice the skill, make mistakes and learn from the mistakes you have made.
The reason we started a UA-cam channel was to share the things we have learnt in our family workshop over the years and most of the skills we have developed are from doing everything wrong before getting things right. Every day we learn something new and improve on our skills and most importantly enjoy what you are doing.

Additionally, start with easy projects, for example cutting out key rings. Circle shapes, oval shapes, heart shapes and once you are confident with those progress onto projects that include pierce work (internal cuts)
Learn about doing your own designs and getting them to work on a scroll saw. Make the projects progressively more complex. Try stack cutting, intarsia, develop your own style, try different woods. The options are endless.

It would be great to cut at that speed but the process takes us a little longer than demonstrated in the video playback. We speed up our videos so you can see the projects taking shape in a matter of minutes as opposed to the hours that are often required to make items.

Great to hear from you. There are lots of different types of scroll saw and a massive variety in quality and price. When we first started using a scroll saw we got started with entry level machines, the same as most people when they get started. We soon realised that this wasn't going to be suitable for the daily use that our scroll saw gets and looked for a better solution. We settled on the Hegner multicut 2s and twenty plus years later it continues to do a fantastic job for us.
It largely comes down to budget and quality you need. Entry level machines can be great if you are getting started or only occasionally using your machine but there are certainly better quality scroll saws available.

Didn't finish watching yet, will go back. But already for a person (usually in their 50s, 60s, 70s plus) screw this it this then to this and then buy a 600 dollar machine to cut a 2 dollar piece of wood, not happening. Most want to open the box put it together and work otherwise it is work and we are not being paid, thus it isn't a hobby, but a job and I will bet without things like UA-cam most wouldn't go near a scroll saw or even heard of one.
He already lost me with all this bolting, not happening for a small machine, overkill. Rather work an extra day a month and buy the piece, put it in a room and let it collect dust there then sell it again. Not what having a hobby is all about.
