- Platy Fish Tank Setup and Requirements are fairly easy to accomplish. You should use an aquarium size of 10 gallons minimum with this fish. The water temperature for platy fish can range from 50° all the way to 78°F. You can feed them a general community flake food and they will do just fine. Take mates should include generic community tropical fish as long as you have the water temperature is correct with a heater involved.

I have been in the hobby more than 50 years and had all kinds of fish. Now I only keep platies as they are easy, beautiful, active, well behaved, engaging, prolific, easy to breed, no special foods, friendly, inexpensive, and come in many colors and patterns. It is the perfect fish.
I recently rescued platy fish from an abandoned house. firstly, I am new to fish keeping and thought she was a juvenile goldfish, but after a wonderful person on reddit advised she was either a molly or a platy it changed everything. I've had for about a month (her name is Katy) and she is doing great! Your videos really helped me give her all that she needed to have another chance a life and I thank you for that! The place I found her in had left her with a cigarette bud in her tank. Not sure how long she was left like that and it definitely broke my heart. Not only do I have the cutest and bravest fish, I am now addicted to fish keeping! I am looking at getting her some tank mates since she is out of quarantine and I have set up a tank for the new fish - so they can be quarantined. Your channel provided everything I needed to get started and feel confident. Also, your daughter is so precious and I love seeing the bond and dynamic. Please keep making videos! Cheers!

I’m getting a 55 gallon tank on the 1st and I have platy and minnows together. I keep the tank at 70-72. They do great.
I have a 20gallon that originally had platys. But they died so I went towards nano schooling fish (harlequin rasboras and cardinals) and 2 dwarf groumis. The tank ended up getting heaps of algae build up, despite having a bristle nose catfish. So I've restarted, bought new substrate. Took the old gravel and half the water out, cleaned and added new substrate and plants. Now it's a waiting game to add fish which are going to be platys. Despite the crazy breeding, my daughter loves them and they're not just easy to look after but their bright colours make the tank look so cool as well 👌

My setup is a 20 gallon long planted aquarium. It houses Cory cats and 8 platies
I think the most most important part of the process is the cycling part.
You should talk about that more. Tank, filter, gravel.
My fished died cause I didn’t cycle. I had no idea.
1 rule: let the tank cycle for at least a month

They can be very friendly to those they know. I can put my face right up to the glass and they aren't phased in rhe least.
The strongest fish in the world. You know, there was a farmer who left him in a tarpaulin pond without feeding him and 1 year later he saw lots of fish ready to be scooped up.
I have mollies and platys in my 20 gallon and love them
To cycle my tank I let it run with a ammonia bio filter for about a week added some Cory catfish for a few days and then added my platys and they’re doing good 👍🏽

@adityas8003 a 2.5 or 5 gallon isn't big enough. Maybe for a holding tank when a female gives birth but long term they move a lot. 10g long minimum gives them that space

My 5 platty have a huge 75 gallon with huge canister filter very spoiled. And fully planted and a huge pirate ship in middle. :) no 10 gallon for me no cheap set up for my spoiled fish. My Beta is in a 50 gallon lol. Only the best.

OooOO I may have missed it, are the schooling fish? And I have white clouds in my unheated tank, do you know if they eat fry? I've been trying to find someone to keep this white cloud farm I apparently created under control
I keep mine with white clouds, and there are still plenty of platy fry. I do have lots of guppy grass in there though.
I have a whole bunch of pearl weed. I just don't have enough room for the amount of babies I'm getting and it doesn't seem like people in my area have super great luck with getting rid of their fry from live-bearers and guppies.
Didn't even know I had the white clouds in the optimal conditions, actually worried it was too hot for them so I re-homed them. They left a surprise. And it was a huge surprise as there were no fish just a couple of snails left after I re homed the parents
They absolutely eat their fry. I bought platies two weeks ago and I had no idea one was prevent. The very first night I got them, I came downstairs to turn their light off and I saw a bunch of dry swimming and the platies eating them. I couldn’t stop it. I tried to save one but they’re too fast
What plants would you recommend for platys in a 10 gallon tank ?
Gotta have some anubias mixed in with the hard scap. Anubias Nan and anubias Pettit
If you have a gravelly type of substrate smaller forms of sagittaria are great. They get stollons (runners) and become many and the plant likes hard alkaline water. You will have a lot of plants for another tank later. Hornwart is very good for a place for fry to hide. It has no true roots.and floats unless artificially anchored down. Break off the older parts of the stems and discard them occasionally.
Platies like hard alkaline water which is quite plentiful in most places out west. Many of the commercial platies were raised in brackish water so about one teaspoon of aquarium salt per gallon will keep them happy without interfering with the plants.
This need is stringer in mollies.

Can platies and/or sword tails withstand soft water and tank temps at around 82 degrees? I’m looking for dithers for loaches other than barbs. I have an 120 gallon. I don’t have live plants. I have a basic LED light and my tap water has I ppm of phosphate so I get lots of diatoms. Any advice for all of this? Thanks!
