Gold Prospecting: 6 Days in the North Queensland Goldfields: Garrett AT Gold.

  • We spend 6 days in the red soil country of the North Queensland Goldfields prospecting for gold, searching for 'old timer's' relics and fossicking for gemstone agate. Featured relic finds include a Royal Navy Officer's jacket button dating from the Victorian era, and a 19th Century brass saddler's needle. On the final day, a bit of 'gully raking' and careful detecting with the Garrett AT Gold and AT Pro machines produces a lovely little sub-gram gold nugget. We hope you enjoy sharing our 6-day expedition to the Gulf Savannah Goldfields. Thanks for watching and subscribing! Colleen and Warren. www.nqexplorers.com www.garrettaustralia.com.au

Thanks for your multiple comments Iroc - this was one of those trips - and I know you have been on similar expeditions - where the journey, and the experience - are reward enough. Finding any relics or even gold is just cream on the cake. Nothing like the Aussie bush at any time of the day or night - a great experience. All the best mate and HH! Warren and Colleen.

Warren and Colleen, Great Video. Always challenging finding Gold in any location. Thanks to the old timers who discovered these remote locations. They have made it easier for us to gain knowledge of the hard work and extreme conditions that they had to work in. Keep the vids coming as they are always enjoyable and very interesting. G.L.& H.H. hi Warren the trees that you mention around 8 minutes in are called Hakea suberea and we call them 'the gold trees' as they are often found growing near where gold is found.

Nice vid again! Those trees looked like something out of a Dr. Seuss book! :-) Loved the button!! The saddler's needle was really cool, too. Interesting that the gold was ringing so low. Looking forward to the next! GL&HH! Martin

Hi Warren, great video to watch as usual. Even though that is some great country to play in, from your finds it seems like it has been well worked over. It highlights the fun of this hobby, you just never know what will be found where. Thanks for sharing and can't wait for your next video. Cheers, Vic.

Thanks for your great comment - we love the Infinium as a good 'all round', go anywhere detector. For access to our sites we use the Land Rover and walk the rest - we often take the caravan to remote spots (it is a 15' 'Outback' model with raised and strengthened suspension). Most places we have to 'walk in' - tracks are often washed out and a quad bike would be handy! HH mate! Warren.

Thanks for your comment Erle. We cracked open that quartz rock that was giving a signal on the detector - no gold - but a mysterious silver metal - we think it may be Antimony - but are going to have a geologist check it for us. All the best mate and HH! Warren.

Thanks for your great comment Chris and Joel - absolutely right - tough going out there in 2013 with a metal detector - imagine what those 'old timers' suffered in 1860! That little piece of gold was a thrill on the last day - always nice to go home with something! All the best and HH! Warren.

Thanks for taking the time to comment Chris. We use the AT Gold up here in some 'red hot' ground and have no trouble ground balancing it out. You also have that great 'ground balance window' feature that allows for variation in balance conditions in even the toughest conditions. 'Hot rocks' are easily checked and GB'd out. The AT Gold is very sensitive to small gold - ideal for worked areas/mullock heaps and 'old timer's' diggings with lot of iron rubbish. Hope this helps mate. Warren.

The needle you found, I know as a bagging needle.
We used it on my parents farm when I was a kid (I'm now 64). We sewed up hessian bags of corn and potatoes. Have seen it elsewhere being used for the same purpose.

Doc Elliott, my dad had one for sewing up / together heavy duty canvas. At my work we use that size and styles of needle for sewing up holes in ventilation ducting tube underground. All in all he found a great item. Regards Rick, underground miner and detectorist in western Australia.

Warren, what a trip. I hope you listened to that intro music loud. I'm sure it was the Godzilla cd version.
I like that you follow the dry creek bed and small runs into the creek. I've followed an old tailings race but to no avail. At least the strategy was sound.
I'm caravanless at the moment but will be buying a new one next year, complete with the womanly trimmings; i.e inside toilet and shower. Then I'll go bush inspired by your video.

Thanks for commenting Corben - if you are looking for old 'ghost towns' - your local library is the best place where there are 'limited run' local history books. These often have maps and all sorts of helpful details as they are usually written by former residents of the places. Also if you scan an old area online in Google Maps - the old street plans of towns are often still shown on the maps. Hope this helps mate. HH! Warren.

Thanks for watching and commenting - and your question is not unrelated - we do need remote power solutions in the places we travel. The off-road caravan has a 100aH battery - as yet we don't have a solar panel but we are researching getting a folding panel arrangement of around 100W. The van has a gas fridge, but the Engel car fridge is 12v so requires solar to keep the battery topped up for any lengthy stays. All the best mate and HH! Warren.
