    We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.

    UA-cam comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of UA-cam comment sections, in our experience.
    We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

    The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
    The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
    We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

      The problem is that you're conflating something two things that don't have anything to do with each other. Atheism just means: lack of belief in a god. It doesn't mean: skeptical, educated, tolerant, respectful, or anything else.
      The issue here is liberalism vs conservatism, not atheist vs theist.
      Atheists tend to be more liberal in the US because of the deep ties between conservatism and religion, that's just a fact. The moment prominent Republicans stop invoking god and blaming problems on demons, then you might see a wider spread of ideologies regardless of religious beliefs.

    • @ArtofFreeSpeech
      @ArtofFreeSpeech 2 роки тому

      @@Fernando-ek8jp But, see, that's changed of late... not the conservatives invoking God... that still happens, and I still roll my eyes at them, but rather the ideology of the liberals has become authoritarian and violent. As a libertarian, they go against every single thing I stand for. As I said, I don't mind being in the minority. I just mind the extreme nastiness of the left, again, when they find out I'm a fiscal conservative (which has less than zero to do with God or a lack thereof). Of course, it doesn't help that I'm a self-made man and come from poverty, but became successful through my own hard work. There seems to be nothing today's left hates more than a good rags to riches through hard work story.

    I'm a conservative atheist and have atheist friends. I don't know any atheists that are far left. 90% of my atheist friends are conservative the rest are in the center. Since most republicans / conservatives in the US are blindly religious some won't claim to be conservative because they don't want to be pigeon holed to be religious. And claimed religious people still control the government at least till they get the job.
    I'm not claiming that most atheist are conservative or republicans. I would imagine that my case is because I gravitate towards like minded people. Atheism of course only pertains to the once claim of sky daddies exist, so it does make sense that people of all education levels would be atheist to some extent. I think you must understand some different fields of science so therefore I can't understand how they could be extreme left, from there to the middle right I can understand. You must understand enough science to know how the sciences stack up against the claims of religions. But then again, these days, so many students go to college in the middle and come out on the left only because their professors are, with no rational argument for it. I do think that the extreme left and right must reject the sciences to hold their positions.
    My fiends opinion fall into disbelief if we talk about politics or when they find out that I am and mostly vote republican. They spout off, "how can you admit you are a republican! I thought you were smart!" Then come with a few idiotic individual republicans politicians views. Which I don't believe is an argument. I am a republican, I just don't think the republicans are doing it right! but I'm working on it.

      But the reason why liberals and those on the left tend to be less tolerant is because your opinions can influence your votes, and votes can affect policy, and if you vote for a politician that causes harm to the nation and other people, its basically your fault for putting them in power in the first place. And liberals don't wanna tolerate the beliefs of people that are harmful, bigoted and ignorant, in the same way that we all will never tolerate the beliefs of white supremacists and will never ever respect them because your beliefs can harm other people by influencing your actions.
      One of my favourite quotes is this "For the Triumph of evil to succeed, is for good men to do nothing". By being tolerant of harmful beliefs and never take the measures to stop it, you are allowing it to spread and harm others.

    Indeed, for decades Atheism has sadly been intermingled with liberal issues intentionally and cheaply. Have we ever heard a prominent atheist speaker who didn't fall back on the feminist narratives and the like, acting as if religion disproportionately affected women? They ostracized Dawkins so hard for stating biological facts, as a world-renowned biologist, that he had a stroke. They are readily abandoning any scientific facts whenever it conflicts with their ideology. It's hard to be an atheist who isn't rainbow flavored.

    • @TheKnowledgeMan101
      @TheKnowledgeMan101 2 роки тому +2

      First of all, Dawkins absolutely supports trans people, and yes, biologically they are women, but at the same time, gender isn't always male and female, there are people that are born who are intersex. And also according to recent research in psychology, there is a correlation that the brains of trans people function more similarly to the people of the opposite gender than the gender that they were assigned with. So this is more about Psychology rather than genetics. And the opinions of one scientist doesn't encompass the whole of Science. Albert Einstein believed in a static universe, which was a universe where space is not expanding. But he was wrong.
      And also, the reason why atheists tend to be more left leaning and liberal is because conservatism has been more associated with religion, and they can see that conservatives tell alot of lies relating to Science such as evolution and climate change. And conservatives tend to hold more bigoted views like Transphobia, Misogyny, Homophobia.

      @@TheKnowledgeMan101 First of all, I never said that Dawkins doesn't support them I just said he was ostracized for acknowledging biological facts that didn't appease their feelings. Intersex is not a gender, it is a birth defect. Yes, I know about the brain scans, I agree with that assessment. I also agree that it is psychological, not genetic. I also acknowledge that all the things that they say are untrue, they are merely being said to appease the feelings of people with a severe form of body dysmorphia. American conservatives, European conservatives aren't as antagonistic towards atheism. I disagree with the majority of the arguments of bigotry, all the more so now that intersectionality, CRT, and the like are being preached.

    Honestly, and maybe this is giving people too much of an easy ride, but as soon as someone says they're an atheist, I just instantly respect them. Politics then becomes so much more an engaging, free and meaningful debate. I think a part of it is that, if I know someone is an atheist, I know they care about evidence. There's a certain degree of critical thinking underpinning their arguments and that they're aiming for truth based on evidence, as opposed to faith, as their raison d'être. That's not to say I agree with everyone who is an atheist. I just appreciate atheism as a signal for the kind of logical consistency I'm dealing with. I can be confident they have a reasoned argument for their political position based on evidence and not mere faith. Conservative atheists have been the most challenging and enjoyable company in political debates for me. They have made me think hard on many issues. I have so much respect and time for them.

    Speaking of atheists being conservative or liberal I think most atheists are liberal or left leaning. The caller is the first conservative atheist I know of. Welcome to the group. I think it would be useful as to why this is so. Perhaps asking atheists if they were liberals before becoming an atheists or if after becoming an atheist, they adopted liberal views. Seems like interesting conversation. Perhaps freeing themselves from restrictive religious views helped them to free themselves from other restrictive social views. Anyway I'd be interested in finding out.

  • @jackstevenson4679
    @jackstevenson4679 2 роки тому +1

    Good clip and I agree with the caller. I am a Libertarian apostate. Where I differ from liberal atheists is in two major issues.
    1. Fiscal responsibility
    2. Personal accountability
    Most liberals want to raise taxes. I believe in lowering taxes and letting people make their own choice with their money. I do not believe private citizens should have their money stolen to fund frivolous government projects. There is so much pork to cut out of the budget and if our politicians did so then lowering taxes would be easy. Both sides choose not to do so..Democrats are just more guilty of this than the GOP.
    Personal accountability. The atheist community likes to point of fingers when it comes to personal accountability. We will grow when all of us point the finger to ourselves. Ultimately we are all 100% accountable for our own actions. Personal freedom is paramount.
    Let me provide an example. Third party liability laws. The left would say that if a man goes into a bar and gets drunk then proceeds to leave the bar and hits a family driving home and they are killed that the bar can be held liable in a criminal and/or civil court. True conservatism would not allow this..but rather solely hold the responsible party which is the drunk man accountable only. This is personal accountability.
    Second example. Medical care. Most of the health problems in America are caused by a poor diet. Evidence of this is that heart disease kills more people than anything else in the US. What causes heart disease? Partly genetics but largely poor dietary choices. Poor genetics can mostly be overcome with better food choices. Conservatives don't support medicare for all simply because we don't feel that our tax money should go to fund peoples poor choices. This goes back to personal accountability.
    Personally I am pro choice. But I do not support tax payer money funding abortions and believe that the abortion should come 100% out of the pocket of the patient unless its a medical emergency. Elective abortions should be paid 100% out of pocket. Naturally this would lower the number of abortions which should be the goal of both sides. True conservatism supports someone being their true self and supports the trans community. That being said...surgery should be paid 100% out of pocket and never covered by insurance. Of course if the patient chooses therapy and medication over the surgery both should be covered by insurance. If living your best life is completely transitioning then go out and make it happen. Work two jobs. Take up Uber eats on the weekend. Make it happen.
    I could go on and on. But the main difference in the two camps comes down to personal accountability. Removing God from money and prayer from school is of no interest to us because both of these issues are largely irrelevant. Focus on what matters which is where I fear most atheist activists drop the ball.
