Damn a lot of haters in the comment section Guys they are tool fans just like we are! Let them cover an amazing song from a band that has influenced them. Jeez
I love the shakiness in his voice, it adds a lot of character to it in that the meaning is dark, and this makes the narrator sound like someone who is truly going through what the lyrics depict
The point of being a good vocalist is to put your unique spin on the vocal inflection. It isn't Maynard so it's not gonna sound like Maynard. Love or hate it it's definitely Ben's voice and that is an amazing thing
For me this is more powerful and moving due to his emotional vocal delivery. You can hear the pain in his voice I actually teared up the first time I heard this version.
Breaking Benjamin has gotten me through some damn rough times in my life... This is my first time hearing this cover... I am a tool fan as well, they have been a amazing influence to my favorite bands.. #1 being BB... I'm 4 days sober as of this day.. I feel the pain and why this song has always touched my dark soul.. Hearing Ben's voice & these words fucking hit home right now....
Considering what Ben has been through and the fact that he has to suffer through the pain of wet brain for the rest of his life because of his drinking, I think its appropriate for him to cover this.
His vocals are shaky because he probably wasnt sober Ben was a severe alcoholic he damn near drank himself to death also this song may have hit home for him also Dear agony is his brain scan from the damage the alcohol did to his brain
Nothing wrong with a band giving Tribute. Covering Tool songs. It's called the power of music. I personally love both bands. Bringing the audience closer to the reality tht they are humans all the same. Who love other music besides their own. A great reason to stay a fan.
As Benjamin Burnley said in an interview before, they are just as big of fans of the genre as we the fans are of it. They are showing respect for their favorite band, just as he does for Chevelle.
I know this is an old comment, but are you sure it's his accent, and not his tongue ring? cause in So Cold you can easily tell his tongue is pierced and it affects his voice quite a bit when singing
My opinion is guaranteed to be unpopular, but I feel like Ben's vocals suite this song more so than Maynard's. Ben's vibrato almost gives the song a feeling of him teetering on the brink of insanity. Edit: Thanks to all of you who agree with me.
First Staind then Breaking Benjamin covering this song and honestly I'm sure Maynard and the guy's from Tool would appreciate their song being covered by two amazing singers and band's!!
Probs gonna get a lot of hate for this, but, I'm a huge Tool fan, but a bigger fan of Breaking Benjy, and I think this version is on par with the original
To everyone expecting a carbon copy cover of Sober, please. They're covering TOOL for christ's sake. OF COURSE they're not gonna be as good. This is as good as Breaking Benjamin can be covering Tool. Tool's always gonna be better, but BB made a good attempt. And yes, Ben was sick, but I feel the shakiness of his voice added "teeming on the edge of insanity" vibe. Gave my two cents because I see the fanatics Maynard always hates congregating in a circlejerk. Nuance, guys. Give it a shot.
A live cover of this songs more appropriate than a perfect studio enhanced version possibly surpassing the original from its time and limited technology. Unless your Johnny Cash covering hurt, than thats ok
Idk how many people I’ve seen doggin on tool fans on these comments, it’s makin the BB fans look more toxic lmao, and that’s coming from a fan of both of these damn bands😂😂
Not neccesarily. I too am a huge fan of both. They're basically calling out TOOL fans for being toxic assholes, because that's what they're being. Ben was sick when he did this cover, so they have a right to be that way towards them
long time fan of both bands and I think this cover is just fine. People often forget that it is just that. a cover. If it sounded exactly like the original then what is even the point?
No shit it is not as good as the original. Why would you ever think it to be, it's not mixed or recorded in a studio and it's done in one take as it is performed live. Breaking benjamin and tool are my favorite bands ever so this cover is purely amazing. And as one of Danney Carrey's biggest fans, I can tell you that BB nailed the drum part
This is ok. Not the original at all. The passion simply isn't there. This is rehearsed lines. Verse and notes coming out in a prescribed fashion. Tool played the song, but always with changes as passion required. Nuance. Tool fans elitists? to some extent yes. I was at a Tool concert in june. Was a chick beside me who was out of her mind drunk. Seriously screwed with my enjoyment. This band is not about escape. They are about embrace. Frustrated but hopeful. If you listen to Tool ..I mean really listen. Shut the lights off and listen from the beginning of the Lateralus album to the end..you will be a fan. Its akin to taking drugs. They aren't geared toward "catchy". They don't release singles..every song is part of an album. If you hear the song (including sober) without the rest of the context, you are missing most of the true mastery going on.
Weird.. It sounds like he changed the chorus slightly. It sounds like he's saying" Something but the past is done" instead of "Something but to pass the time"
@Sam well I got the notification as awkward as I may feel for not even understanding what the fuck I meant and cringing to my own comment from way back it does in a way feel good to see how I'm still retarded 7 years later

Wait, they influenced them? That’s pretty fucking cool and more logical know that I think about it
La Gárgola that still doesn’t make it wrong for them to cover a song
The rule is... don't cover a song unless you can do it better than the original. Think Johnny cash covering hurt. Lol
Tristan Munson nobody has EVER said that as a rule. There are no rules to music.
Fan of both bands, and they did a killer version. I feel it
honestly, true
Nice pfp
I'm a huge tool fan and I liked this cover.
Breaking benjamin are better than tool imo. Also they are probably the best modern rock band there is.

Great cover and he puts heart into it since he has struggled with alcohol so much. And I feel that pain.

It sounds like Ben says "I am just a worthless lawyer", because of his slight Irish accent. Still, easily the best Tool cover I've ever heard.

Cool! Great recording quality. When I saw BB live, they performed the drum solo to Schism. Got to see Tool play the week later!
Benji is so adorable! It was so cute how he apologized at the end! The lovely man turns 39 tomorrow (March 10, 2017).
Very very biased but I think Ben puts way more emotion into it than the lead singer of tool. Still a really good band tho.
