Wow. I am happy to say that I am a new subscriber. Normally with these mma types they seem to belittle traditional boxing and make it seem inferior, but this man said it how it really is: although boxing may be more limited, boxers have the ability to potentially dictate a fight with their specialized boxing skills. He treats all these sports as equals and that is really refreshing. Each stance is geared towards a specific sport but any of them can be modified to succeed in mma, something I've been trying to tell my peers for a while now. This man is a true fighter, treating all styles as equals. I gleefully await future videos from this one!!!
But boxing footwork leaves their legs exposed to low kicks, and without that footwork they can't have the mobility, nor punches as effective as they have.

Hey Shane, I’ve done traditional martial arts for about 7 years and I did boxing for about a year and a half and now I’m going into my first season of wrestling as a sophomore. I’m very hyped and excited but was wondering if you could do a video on wrestling?
This is amazing, I was just to ask about the basic differences in the stance, as I am transitioning from Muay Thai/Kickboxing to MMA; but this already answer all of my questions. Thanks. P.S: Nice gloves.
This is excellent, Shane, thank you! One thought, when I started the martial arts back in the day, groin was a primary legal target. That was a stance and guard changer. Even now, I hold my rear hand a little low and turn the lead foot some because of that. If you watch how Bruce Lee sparred he did that, probably for that reason.
I really want to learn BJJ and Muay Thai. I know BJJ would give me a huge advantage in most fights I could possibly get into, but Muay Thai seems to be absolutely devastating and if I’m honest it just looks like a beautiful art form. Especially because it was created originally for war.
Shane, what do you have to say to those who doubt the likes of Karate, Kung Fu and the old eastern martial arts? Are they really a waste of time and ineffective in a fight with an opponent that may know boxing, or wrestling maybe? Can you make a video on this please.
best for real life fight scenario is mma because it combines strike clinches and ground together. almost 99% of fights end up to the ground so knowing bjj will make the difference
Mahdi - Seeking Wisdom mma is the best cuz it s the closest to street fight and you get sparring that is very similar to street fight and it prepares you for every situation
I'm a muy Thai guy. I have lots of trouble keeping my technique during a fight abandoning it going into a boxing/mma style when countering and throwing punches. This is good info for me to focus on.
This is why I love this channel. Had this doubt on the different stances between thai and boxing and had lots of difficulty adjusting to boxing which I now am practicing.
This material is very helpful! Now i fully understand difference between kickboxing and Muay Thai. I'm on transition phase and I didn't understand what my trainer said about my knees/feet.
Conor McGregor is 1 inch taller than me (5'8 to 5'9) yet has a 6 inch reach advantage (68"to 74"). That's the reach of someone 6 feet tall. He's adapted to use his jab to create distance and use his explosive leg strength to deliver powerful kicks.
I'm so thankful that I've watched this because I was really having a problem with my stance and the jab. I do Muay Thai and when I jab my foot moves inwards and I'm very vulnerable to low kicks
You didn't have to show us the reverse kick. It takes your breath away when you're talking. I like this comparison, and props for mentioning some techniques used by popular fighters.
I was lucky enough to train with Vitor Belfort in his KO prime... at Carlson's school in LA and he said exactly the same as you wider stance for MMA to minimize takedowns, but obviously have a ground game
It's simple, boxing is only punching, muay thai is fighting with kicks elbows and fists and MMA is basically fighting with everything you got. That's why the stances are different.
Good video Shane. Personally, I'm finding a little bit hard to change the habit of the MMA stance now that I'm training Muay Thai. But I have a good coach that lets me know when I'm doing the opposite of what I should be doing and getting used to a new style, that even though it seems similar, it has its own characteristic things.
Shane, is using a tall Muay Thai stance against a good wrestler risky because of how close the legs are together and being so tall exposing a lot of area for a shoot takedown? I use a slightly taller stance but I have a lot of wrestling experience so I can still effectively sprawl and move out to one side or the other but I wanted to know what your opinion on it.
3:30 "I do not recommend this for MMA"... I do recommend this for MMA or any combat discipline where high kicks appear, because: lure your opponent into doing things you want him to do!. I would want my opponent to kick high, to kick to my head so i can step in and turn this high kick into a throw by catching the kick while i am cutting the distance and kick his standing leg so he falls on the rear of his head. The higher the kick the easier it is to catch, that is why you should NEVER kick higher than what your opponent can catch.
This is why arguments can be made that Diaz got McGregor the first time as there wasn't enough time to study since Conor was studying for someone else. Then the tables flipped when Conor had full camp with lots of time to watch past fights and whatever he could find to pick apart Diaz game. Diaz had the time too, I think the two camps are vastly different though in terms of study. Fan of both fighters, I hope they get a 3rd fight at some point.
Hey Shane, quick question. I like to do all kinds of experiments with fighting. Most of the time I pick up a new technique (of course I after taking time to learn to use it properly) my instinct is to try and add variations to it, make it quicker or simpler, or make it hurt more; maybe modify it to address a different situation than its typically used in. Anyways, one thing I love to play with I'd stance, and I've been wondering, why is it not very common to see a hand positioning with palms facing inward toward you. I've practiced with it and there's doesn't seem to hinder my strikes, blocks or parries any. If you have any insight on why exactly it's common to have palms facing each other or facing outward as opposed to facing inward it'd be great, or maybe just why we position out hands and arms the way we do in general.
This was very educational. I recently started MMA and so far we've been doing only wrestling. I have a history on Finnish Han Moo Do which is close to Tae Kwon Do, but with some more things mixed to it. So I'm about to have a dilemma soon when we start doing Thai Boxing. I'm not that familiar with it and I'm afraid that practicing a new style might be like teaching an old dog some new tricks. Will it work if I study the new style and then combine it to what already comes naturally to me? Or should I just stick to what I have and enhance it with practice? Any thoughts from you fellow fighters?
In the end, your body will act instinctively. See if one technique is compatible to ones you already know, seek your coach and ask him. After that, it is still your decision; your body will only act upon what you practiced.
Hey Shane,i have a question.Every time i try to do a side kick i feel a hard pain in my hips. Can you make a video about how can i get rid of that pain?Sry if i wrote something wrong.Big love from Serbia🔴🔵⚪️✌
I've had that problem as well -- make sure your are warming up properly before training (side lunges, sumo squats, leg swings, etc.), film yourself to make sure your form is CORRECT, and always stretch/foam roll/rest after training, so you fully recover.
Everywhere I see people argueing which fighting sport is the hardest, which one strikes like a wet noodle etc. instead of appreciate all sports. These sports have one thing in common: They are useless on a street fight. Sure you have advantages of knowing the pain you can receive, exposed areas etc. But what if the opponent pulls out a gun or melee weapon? Thanks for the great video Shane! :)
Good video. I'm not a fighter but was searching for a video explaining the necessary differences between MMA and boxing. The striking in MMA doesn't seem as refined to my untrained eye but I figured that was because of various factors. If you tried to hold a boxing stance in MMA you would be vulnerable because boxers clearly don't need to worry about leg kicks and takedowns. Yet the boxing stance has been refined to maximise the effectiveness of striking with the hands and the MMA stance has to sacrifice some of that in order to both protect you and allow you to use your other tools. Some of it is obvious but the nuance is interesting, there is probably more room to make videos covering some of these differences. While searching I had to scroll down a fair way to find this video so it seems like a topic that doesn't have a lot of clear coverage - unless it's buried in videos with broader fighting focuses.

Tane Sorby for MMA Wrestling and Boxing are the best bases (especially wrestling). This is because good Wrestlers dictate where the fight goes and you'll learn submissions in MMA with striking involved and elbows and knees are covered in MMA. Then there's ground and pound (a wrestlers favourite move).

Kako Mohammed agree, but maybe kickboxing and BJJ
Tane Sorby bjj is boring as fuck. Boxing is the best
Great video Shane!
Thank you, Chris!
I think I might do boxing. I was thinking about training in MMA gym but I don’t want my ears to get messed up like other MMA fighters.
Hassan 4Life if you know how to block and strike there is no worry
I believe he's talking about cauliflower ear from grappling. however I suggest that he tries it and uses a ear guard
Hassan 4Life I'm a boxer and I know that it messes up your ear the same amount as mma don't sweat it coz it only really happens in pro fights
Lol khabib and Tony has the worst ears omg but respect to fighter who walks with permanent Mark's on their face
I trained MMA for over 10 years and I know professional MMA fighters and BJJ competitors who have been training for 20+ years that don't have cauliflower ear. It's really not hard to avoid.
Moving from some experience with boxing to a fresh start in Muay Thai, this was a great video, very clear! Many thanks
How do you like boxing vs mma
