I absolutely love these guys and I was so happy to watch this podcast as I loved and watched multiple times the first one. Gems as someone who loves to write and wants to make online writing career, I’m going to follow these tips to the t.
As a doctor with a small business, the assessment that many professionals (particularly older profs) with private practices need social marketing services is 100% spot on.
I'm only 25 minutes in, but the "get one bigger client not 27 small clients" is such valuable advice and something I totally do in my business. I have one anchor client that provides the majority of my monthly income, and a couple smaller clients around that. To some people that seems risky, but I have great relationships with all of my clients and it's worked really well for me. It also means I don't have to constantly go looking for new clients because I have monthly retainers with my clients that repeat every month. Again, not everybody's bag but it really works for me as far as consistent income and low stress. It also means I've been able to get better and faster at those repeating projects, use AI to my advantage, etc. And now that I have that sort of on autopilot, I'm able to build something new on the side that will be more of a "passive" product, eventually. Great convo so far!
Ah the warm/cold outreach advice is so good too! New freelancers seriously underestimate the value of their own network. Talk to people who already know you about what you're offering! And the, "hey, here's this thing you need to know about for your business, just wanted to let you know," set up for potential clients is so good and almost EXACTLY what I did to get my anchor client. It really works. Just tell people what they need, demonstrate your expertise, and let them come to you.
@@sameshoes For me, no not at all. Again, it's all about building those relationships with your clients. At the end of the day, most people don't want to work with robots, they want to work with cool, hard-working people. And so far, there are still insights, tone, style, etc. I can provide that AI can't.
I love it when a podcast feels like a conversation that happens to be recorded rather than someone being interviewed. This is an amazing example of that. Plus I can't get enough of business people going into the weeds of their thinking. Rather than spewing media soundbites.

This is one of the best / more practical episodes on this topic I’ve listened to, like ever. There are so many “hook”videos out there on starting a side hustle / financial freedom that are so pie in the sky and jargon heavy. They rarely give you the step by step guide and make you think you should just be a UA-cam star or viral creator. This ep was wayyyy more practical. Thank you!
Towards the end when you're talking about writing consistently in small amounts every day, or writing in long bursts over a week or two, an important distinction is that you need to build up to those big bursts with consistency or you will burn yourself out. For people who already do a lot of writing as part of their job, you have a headstart, but someone who is starting from 0 needs to ramp up to big bursts. It's like running. You can't just decide to run a marathon unless you are already consistently running 10k a few times a week. If you want to be able to spend 8 hours a day writing, you don't start at 8 hours. You start with 15 minutes everyday then work your way up to an hour, then two.
I'm an artist and a lot of this still applies. He's saying a lot of things that are similar to my experiences, especially under valuing myself for a long, long time.
I have gotten SO MUCH value from both episodes with Nicholas Cole I’ve watched! The guy’s a machine! Not only is his writing awesome…he’s great at teaching it too!
Ali, Thanks for letting him share your "self-publishing or publisher?" question...reminds me of Tucker Max...his 3rd book (self-published) sold less than his first two (with publisher) and he made MORE money on that one!!
This podcast episode introduced me to Nicolas Cole and I ended up purchasing the Premium Ghostwriting Academy. Ali Abdaal's podcast is a never-ending source of wisdom. Thank you!
Freakin love the back and forth between Ali and Cole on feel good productivity category and what could work vs not for the next book. Just the whole thought process was golden. Other fav bit: Ali “my team has been listening to The Espresso Hour” podcast Cole, looked up, beaming, and with a hint of surprise “really?”
The stock market is a complex system that is influenced by a variety of factors, including economic indicators, political events, and global trends. The relationship between policies and the stock market can be complex and multifaceted, and it can take time for the full effects of policies to be reflected in market trends. Therefore, it is possible that policies implemented in the past may have a "lagged effect" on the stock market, as their full impact may not be felt until later on
Accurate asset allocation is crucial, I used hedging strategies to allocate part of my portfOlio to defensive assets for market downturns. Expert guidance is vital for achieving this
I've purchased numerous stocks in individual firms. Because there are so many stocks that will skyrocket in the long run, it is currently safe to buy in on ETF and ride it out. Due to fud, I sold out early, but then retraced my ways and re-invested $350,000 with a financial advisor who manages my account. I received an 82% return last year and will see where it goes this year.
Thanks for this. I just googled her name and found her webpage. I'm really impressed with her credentials and I reached out to her since I need all the assistance I can get..
I agree with Nic Cole as you have to get out of the commodity market. An 'information advantage' is an interesting perspective. Insight, info, plus writing skills. Skill level is important too.
I was introduced to Nicolas through his inspiring tweets, and they truly resonated with me. Ali recommended Nicole's book on online writing to me. this encounter has become a valuable treasure for me. i am grateful to both of you for providing us with the opportunity to learn and improve ourselves aligning with the online writing journey. Your advice on educating rather than pitching is truly insightful and appreciated. Thank you, Ali and Nicolas, for your contributions 😃
Never clicked so fast. Cole is truly inspiring and empowering, I'd love to have him as a friend and mentor. All his success is deserved. Much love. Bryan.
The problem with doing work for free is the rent is due every month. You have a finite time to work. The more work you do for free for a person the harder it will be for you to get them to pay for it in the future. So take into consideration that the people they will connect you with will want you to do it for free/cheap. It is great for building a portfolio or body of work, but in my experience telling them it would be "X" but I will give you a discount of "X" for this job, works better if you want to get more business from that client.
I think you are missing the point here. The value of doing it for free is because the return you get is the "network" "portfolio" and "skill." Assuming you are not living with your parents or on a full ride college scholarship. Don't quite your day job, do this incrimentally. I've done this method of doing a ton for free just to gain the skill while doing a different job that I naturally had the skill for which was "organizing." The once I got the technical skill after a ton of trial and error, I specialized in the thing I really wanted to do and landed a job doing that. In the USA at least, you spend years of your life in grade school learn a ton of things for free before you go out into the world. It's only natural that this would be the case still for how you convince people you are worth the price you say you are.

I was on a writing webinar once with Rachel Rodgers from Hello Seven, and she explained really well on why she self-published some of her books, and why she used traditional publishing for some. I can't remember her reason now, but I think her self-published book was really niched.
This was such a great conversation. I enjoyed Nicholas' first appearance, and this one is definitely worth a couple of relistens. I wasn't looking for motivtion, but I got that and more.

I loved the dating analogy. Sth clicked, I knew that but hadn't ever thought about selling/pitching in that way. It'll be easier to remember this way; thank you 🎉
Gosh, this was amazing!!! Well done you both, excellent! I loved the openness and transparency and vulnerability, Ali was amazing in being so open to receive “advice” or alternative point of view. Excellent!!
I'm actually really glad you ended up talking so much about books because I'm planning on writing one and so glad I heard these tips before getting too far in the process.
Great conversation! My view of self-help books is that they offer more anecdotal and abstract information than real, tested strategies for direct application. Nicolas is right. They need to be narrower in scope.
Just love it cole it’s always the best, like him because he is a good human 🔑Take -Specific -Strat with small -Value over money -Grow the category -Growth and experience
What amazes me the most is how easy I forget these are flesh and blood just like me. Same spine, same book, paper and ink, same library, all can be checked out, but only in different sections, and only are more known than me. If you’re a writer/creative learn the principles and forget the fact you are not wildly known.
This was a really good video saying it and I am just minute 22. I am in job hunting after losing my job after 3.5 years because the company shot down because the owner was doing tax fraud. Now I realized how under paid I was as PPC manager. Sub for both of you first video I saw from you like the algorithm was knowing what I need right now :D I am kinda doing writing too just ad copy. I am 27 old and actually thinking starting my own freelance career but I think finding a job first would be easier. From what I saw working for an agency and also dealing with clients most of them came from networking and mostly bad leads from online so that's what I am gonna do.
Amazing chat. But didn't talk about social proof. Information advantage is cool but clients want to see social proof. Especially if you're asking $3K/mo. Would love to hear some advice on that.
This isn't nearly as important as people think. I sold $5,000,000+ worth of ghostwriting services without using a single case study. People don't care about social proof, they care whether or not you can help THEM, specifically.
I've got to tell you guys, I was super impressed with your video and I enjoyed it so much I just want to say thanks. It was professional, and delivered high-value information at a time when most YT videos are just click bait. (I swear, if I see one more title that says, "Getting Rich is Easy", I'm going to womit. Yeah, womit is worse than vomit. ) And I realize that this hasn't got anything to do with what your content was about, but it was nice seeing two young guys, who are way smarter than me, having a great conversation that anyone could learn from. And the fact that you didn't use the queen mother of curse words every other other sentence just so you could look trendy, or whatever, was nice too. It was just plain polite speaking with wonderful content. Absolutely fantastic. As a matter of fact, I'm going to go back through this content and take notes. I've tried a lot of different ways to get copywriting clients and this one, by far , sounds like more fun. (And yes, I have a specific and detailed niche that I'm targeting within a clear skillset.) So, anyways, you guys rock!!!! Thanks for keeping it at a level I could understand and relate to. God bless!
for the traditional vs self-publishing conversation, I think in Ali's case (and possibly more broadly), it's a matter of weighing which you value more, reach or money. If you value reach (and prestige), you have a better chance with traditional publishing, but if you value money, and you're willing to put in the work to do all the admin tasks to make it happen, self publish. It's also a question of if you are financially able to coordinate everything that the publisher would do for you (i.e. if you're a young, first-time author, you probably wouldn't have the finances available to spend on everything up-front like you have to do with self-publishing). Self-publishing seems to have more of a chance of success with a built-in audience (like Ali has).
People dramatically over-estimate how much it costs to self-publish a book well. New writers also drastically over-estimate how much a publisher is going to help them. I'm advocating for recognizing a) it doesn't cost that much, and b) give yourself some time to experiment and see what you can do on your own before you go sell 90% of your book to someone else.
Thank you for sharing such valuable information in this video! Very much appreciated and I look forward to binge watching your other videos and learning everything you're willing to teach from them 😊
This is a great conversation. I feel like you guys have a great perspective on how to make money as a writer. My only question is what if some of these businesses are using more AI based writing tools now? How can one stand out as a writer in this situation? Don't mean to be the difficult one in the group discussion. I'm just looking to get a general understanding.
Someone needs to take Cole's thinking face when Ali's pitching him his business idea and turn it into a gif. You know that whatever he was about to say was about to be absolute fire🔥😂
So much value from this episode! Wondering how does passion play into this? E.g. I have expertise and information advantage on a certain niche but it’s not something that I’m passionate about and would want to pursue a different content/niche. How do I balance being good at one thing and being passionate about something else?
May I advise you to follow your passion always? To follow your passion every moment to the best of your abilities, with 0 expectations of where it will leads will take care of everything is needed when it is needed in your life and will always support you. The kit( to follow you highest excitement/ passion) contains absolutely everything. When you follow your passion you are always in alignment with Source/God/ Universe and it means that everything that is perfect for you comes effortlessly, joyfully, without stress and struggle. You are inspired every moment, receive the perfect ideas from Source and by acting on your inspiration and passion you will be led automatically to everything you need / want . When you don't follow you excitement you are not one with Source, and you are not supported in all you need every moment. Plus you are not happy, when you don't do what you love to do. When you are not in alignment you can't be in peace and joy all the time.
I've been dabbling on this ghostwriting thing. This podcast got me convinced to do it. I got warm leads that I can easily message but don't know how to do that email course that he's saying. So it will be bummer if they say yes then I got nothing.

Dude we love this guy! I want to follow him too. 😮 his interviews are amazing man. I love the way he breaks stuff down. Love this!
I loved the dating analogy. Sth clicked, I knew that but hadn't ever thought about selling/pitching in that way. It'll be easier to remember this way; thank you 🎉
He’s back! I haven’t even watched yet but know there will be massive nuggets throughout this episode
That's the goal
Gosh, this was amazing!!! Well done you both, excellent! I loved the openness and transparency and vulnerability, Ali was amazing in being so open to receive “advice” or alternative point of view. Excellent!!
I'm actually really glad you ended up talking so much about books because I'm planning on writing one and so glad I heard these tips before getting too far in the process.
Great Podcast learned so much more here than in any of my college courses!!
It is good to have you both together in one podcast🙌🏻🌟
Great conversation! My view of self-help books is that they offer more anecdotal and abstract information than real, tested strategies for direct application. Nicolas is right. They need to be narrower in scope.
Just love it cole it’s always the best,
like him because he is a good human

Amazing. I can hear and learn from the Cole 24*7*365
Simple. Clear. Effective.
Nicholas Cole is Brilliant!
He's just spitting out GOLDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reminds me of Ryan Holiday's Ego is the Enemy
What amazes me the most is how easy I forget these are flesh and blood just like me. Same spine, same book, paper and ink, same library, all can be checked out, but only in different sections, and only are more known than me.
If you’re a writer/creative learn the principles and forget the fact you are not wildly known.
This was a really good video saying it and I am just minute 22. I am in job hunting after losing my job after 3.5 years because
the company shot down because the owner was doing tax fraud.
Very good, I'm still amazed by how many freelancers have no idea how to price their services.
Absolutely love this episode!
It's a great podcast episode, one of the best i've ever listened to.
I'm glad
Only half way and already getting a lot from this conversation 👍🏼👍🏼
Amazing chat. But didn't talk about social proof. Information advantage is cool but clients want to see social proof. Especially if you're asking $3K/mo. Would love to hear some advice on that.
This isn't nearly as important as people think. I sold $5,000,000+ worth of ghostwriting services without using a single case study. People don't care about social proof, they care whether or not you can help THEM, specifically.
@@nicolascole77 that's good to know. Would be a great topic to make a video about!
Excellent episode
The self-publishing part was super interesting and useful. Thank you.
Thanks to UA-cam algorithm for showing me this video, guess am getting expose to a lot. Love this ❤️.
Love it thanks this is very enriching! 😊❤👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏼
Excited to hear Cole's notes ;) plugging this in on my long run, thanks Ali!
Me too. I forgot what I said haha.
Please make this haha
This is so amazing!
Another banger episode. So good!
Please consider one on Business .. like Feel Good Business or Feel Good Entrepreneurship!! 👀
Loved this! Great all the way through!
Find those high-paying gigs in tech or finance. That's where the money's at for writers.
That’s exactly how my creative process flows-“title” first.
This was very insightful to share
This was an excellent interview 👏🏼
I'm about to get to this
Your contents are great. Any ideas or advice for nurses 😍🤗
Love this. Thanks, gents.
Can we just have this dude on every episode
Very valuable information 👌 👍 Thank you so much ☺️
I've been dabbling on this ghostwriting thing. This podcast got me convinced to do it. I got warm leads that I can easily message but don't know how to do that email course that he's saying. So it will be bummer if they say yes then I got nothing.
The cleanliness are the ones that clense ali home
Congrats on hitting 500,000 subs, Ali.
Thank you :)
Soooo many good points in this episode 👏🏾
This is incredible, can anyone recommend similar podcasts?around business, productivity and health
Ali's a knowledge VAMPIRE!!
I appreciate all of the book discussion. I published a cookbook with a publisher in 2020 and got royally SCREWED. Next time I’m self publishing!
Absolutely
Cal Newport meeting this guy would be a blast!
I really appreciate your lessons!
Nic I love yr common sense and how you're not fased by Ali's word speed . Can't believe he lived in Lesotho years ago right on my doorstep! Plse pitch an idea, I have nil resources, that I can begin on YT. No PC no smart phone.😎
