I definitely agree on the pointed tips on my picks-but have never so clearly figured out why! Well said indeed.

Yeah, it took me a while to fully articulate why I like the sharper tipped profiles. Before getting the pagoda hook, I found half-diamonds to be a favorite for the same reason. The biggest issue with half-diamonds, was getting around a zero-lift pin in the back. The pagoda hook has a similar problem, but not nearly as bad.

I hate those disc locks so bad. I needed this lesson bc I have one I have to pick soon! 😂 Great video Pugs.

Hey Lady Locks!! For me, part of what makes disc locks such a pain is that they're so awkward to hold! If I could figger out gutting one, they might make challenging challenge locks.

This is super helpful! I still have a hard time knowing which pin I’m on (more so with certain locks). I think I need to practice feeling my way around with a pointer pick to get better at it 😊

Learning to feel pick depth will up your picking game so much! It's also not the easiest skill to learn. That's part of why I advocate "fidget picking". Just hold an easy lock, and mindlessly pick it while watching TV or on zoom meetings or whatever. Thank you for being such an active subscriber on my little channel!

+1 on the practice if fidget picking. (And the term fidget picking which I’m going to make part of my regular vocabulary now)
Getting the feel for which pin you’re on takes time but it’s really important to attacking the lock methodically. Keeping track means not wasting so much time. Use a machined practice lock that you can see the internals on, or an acrylic practice lock I you don’t have a cutaway. You can just drill finding various pins and check yourself very quickly. Nothing worse than thinking you’re dealing with a spool or something else funky and not knowing what pin you’re on and having to go back n start over

The pagoda hook kind of reminds me of my euro hook from Sparrows

I'll have to check out the euro hook... I don't have any tools from Sparrows.

Spool pins are fun to pick! Learning the feedback that they give can help a lot!

Great video. I totally agree with you about being able to feel the pins better with a “sharper” pick tip.
Newbie question - At 15:37 you said you overset pin 4 and adjusted your tension before trying it again. How did you know immediately that kid was overset?

Yes, the sharper profiles do help with the ability to feel the pins, but I forgot to mention that they can sometimes make it a little harder to push the pins.
And that is a GREAT question. Mebbe I'll do a video on how the different pin states feel. But for now, the best way that I can describe an overset pin is that it feels "mushy". Like, when you first touch a pin that's binding it feels stiff and takes some pressure to move. When it hits the shear line, ideally, you'll get a click and perhaps some movement in the plug. But if the keypin hits the shear line and keeps going, the friction will change. It'll go from that stiff feeling you first had when you pushed on the pin, to a different feeling of friction when it's in the bible. The best way that I can describe it is "mushy". If you lighten up on the tension, you will hopefully not drop other pins that are already set, and will allow the keypin to fall back into the chamber in the plug. If you lighten up on the tension exactly the right amount, the keypin will drop back into the plug and the driver pin will stay above the shear line.
Does this make sense? Does it help?

That does help, a lot. That actually explains some of what I’ve been feeling in my more stubborn locks. Thanks for the reply!👍🏻
