Thanks for the review. I have been slowly changing my Cotman over to the White Knights after one of your tutorials or reviews on Patreon. It is amazing how little paint you need to get the same opacity as the Cotmans. These Ladogas look a great buy, just surprising they are not available as Individuals, I guess St Petersburg really consider them a one off purchase as other cheaper brands do with their student range paints. Thanks again. regards Dermott.

Even though they aren't available individually as Ladoga, they are available as White nights, basically they are the same pigment just a different name, with one (Ladoga) being marketed as non toxic because there are no cadmiums in the set, in other words, they are in fact the same paints with different names, I will explain and prove this in the final comparison video.

have used white nights for years and they are great to work with, I save my white night empty pans to refill from tubes to go in that case. thanks for the video

I totally agree Ian, I've had my White nights paints for a few years, they are wonderful paints.

Oooh! I love my whitenights soo much. I agree, you can not stress enough that a TOUCH of a damp brush beings up soo much pigment that you transfer to your mixing surface, add a little more water and you can practically complete an entire painting with that one touch. There is NO scrubbing the paint pans.
I personally love the whitenights plastic palette. I love the versatility of large and smaller mixing surface. I often place the removable tray on the lid as that is the mixing palette I use the most. Staining doesn't bother me.
To stop my pans from being loose in the palette and make it able to toss in my backpack and go...I placed a small dot of poster tack, or blue tack on the bottom of each pan and pressed the pans into the palette. I have never had one fall out. No pan movement what so ever.
    Thanks for the great review.

Great timing, I've been considering buying this set, but I already have two sets of pan type watercolours (Van Gogh x15, Kuretake x36) plus various loose paint tubes (Van Gogh and Art Creation) and bottle paints (Acrylicos Vallejo)
I can't paint or draw very well, but I'm having lots of fun doing it and learning about it from some excellent UA-cam channels like this one. It has given me a way to express myself in a completely different way.
I'm thinking of doing an online painting course to give me a bit more structure and focused practice.

You can never have too many art materials, that's my excuse anyway, these paints are a great option that wont break the bank, in fact I don't think you could go wrong with any of the St Petersburg paints,

@@smoothie77drawingpainting yeah, I think I'll order them, thanks. I do tend to paint a bit "heavy", or so I've been told by proper artists. They say I paint more like acrylic style, due to the colour intensity I achieve. I have managed to do a couple of more washy, transparent colour paintings, but I haven't yet learnt the skill of allowing the water to do the work.
I bought two basic sets of Acrylic paints 12x12ml (Daler Rowney) and Gouache paints 8x12ml (Art Creation) about 6 months ago, but I'm yet to try them.
I reckon this winter will be long, what with all the pandemic restrictions and all, so it's an ideal time to get creative in my foxhole here in Madrid!

I have this set and really like them.
I also found the yellow ochre a bit odd. Since I have a variety of student and artist watercolors , I compared the ochre. The Ladoga is PY 43 and PY1 . My other brands are all single pigment PY 42. Also some of the substitutes for the cadmium and cobalt have poor lightfastness.
This may not be a problem for some. For use in an art journal or for students or just experimenting the price can't be beat1 All in all these are lovely transparent paints, activate easily with water and go down smoothly .

So my understanding is that this Ladoga set is just a 24 pan selection of the "least expensive" paints from the main white nights line (like you said: no Cadmium, Cobalts...) but should be the exact same ones, is that right? I found one image listing the pigments and they all seem to match with the white nights ones on their catalogue, except for Raw Sienna which seems to be from the Sonnet line?? I wish I could read russian lol

not only, it has also higher percentage of fillers in them, according to the nevskaya palitra website "Краски серии «Ладога» изготавливаются на основе высококачественных связующих, но с применением менее дорогих пигментов и с увеличенным процентом добавок и наполнителей. Кадмиево-кобальтовые пигменты в палитре заменены на аналоговые цвета, которые обозначаются буквой «А». Красящие земли (охры, сиены, умбры) изготавливаются на основе пигментов природного происхождения (натуральных красящих земель)." basicaly what it says is: "it is made using high quality binders, but with less expensive pigments and increased percentage of additives and fillers. expensive pigments replaced with analogues marked with letter "A". Earth colours made with pigments of natural origin."

As far as I know in the west all watercolour paint company s go to 3 or 4 company's that sell the pigments to make the paint, making it quite expensive to make the paints .. But in Russia they can source every pigment relatively cheap in Russia making it a lot cheaper than other Brands

Great review. Could anyone help recomend some afordable brushes for watercolour, the brushes i have tend to be too small to hold a lot of water as most of my brushes are for miniature painting. Thanks for any suggestions in advance :)

i really like the jackson's art ICON series... quill brush. it has a nice snap back like regular synthetic round brushes and holds plenty of water (more than a regular cheap synthetic round but less than mop brushes). and if you're looking for something with that holds even more water but don't mind that it doesn't have a great snap back then i recommend the jackson's art RAVEN brush series. it's synthetic but it behaves just like real squirrel hair.
