    I have taught Wingspan to three groups of older women who are only moderately conversant with board games and they have thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a great introduction to the idea of engine building, because the engines are so visible and you can see them work over and over again. It is interesting to me how the game has varied with the size of the group. With 2 or 3 players there was less interaction, but with five players, watching what other players were doing became more important - with the pink engine cards, the availability of different foods, the drafting of the cards, all taking more importance. And, the theme is amazing. We like it a lot.
    I have also taught the game to a group of younger guys, who are regular gamers. I think they found it a little less appealing, because the engine building seemed relatively simple to them. The visual appeal of the game is still there, though.

    I love Just One. Weirdly I enjoy it more with fewer players. If you're playing with 7 or 8 players there's so many hints that even with a couple being cancelled the active player will usually have an easy time guessing the word. We often got 13 out of 13 with a larger group. Still a fun game but not challenging.
    With 3 or 4 you have to be careful what you write because having your word cancelled is more dangerous. It forces you to come up with more creative choices and it's tougher to get a high score.

    You should really take the time to play all five cases of Detective. If you liked Case 1, you will get a blast continue through the remaining four cases. This has been my best gaming experience since Gloomhaven.

    I really don't like Werewolf, but I very much enjoy Werewords. It seems to play well with everyone. From grandmothers to heavy-gamers, I have literally never seen anyone not enjoy it. We don't play with all of those extra roles though.

    Were Words is a redo of Insider, which is a themeless app-less game but essentially the same. You might give that a shot if you can find it.
    Edit: Mark mentioned it later.

    I think Just One and Wingspan are both practically a "lock". I'm fine with that, though I love Feld and would be glad to see Carpe Diem win. I think the game that got a New York Times article, has repeatedly sold out, has rocketed into BGG top 50, etc, that looks as beautiful as Wingspan, with such a broadly appealing theme... I don't think it can lose. Definitely not to Carpe Diem or Detective! If Solenia had been nominated.... maybe.

    To the question, how do you play Just One with 3 people...the clue givers each write 2 clues in that version.

    • @koomo801
      @koomo801 5 років тому +2

      We play that way with four players, especially with kids. Having two clues makes for some interesting options, but we also scramble the clues so that it makes it a little more difficult to construct an intentional two-word clue by preventing the clue-givers from placing their two easels side by side in the order of their choosing.

    With Wingspan you want to treat the end of round goals and bonus cards as what they are. A bonus. You want to focus on your engine more than goals and bonuses for a higher score. Also I'm not huge on player interaction in a competitive game. More important in cooperation.

  • @jedi00719

    The Kennerspiel is hard cause I've only played Wingspan and i really enjoyed it. But I think their discussion makes sense. Carpe Diem feels like a nomination of an old school game, Detective of the new escape room/story driven game and Wingspan is new school game. I think Kennerspiel has been moving towards family game that offers lot more strategy and I feel Wingspan really nails that.
    But the Spiel is super fascinating. Two party games and 1 filler game. I think Lincoln argument is pretty compelling but I think that argument is probably the reason it was nominated in the first place. Just One has been that party game that has really been great for everyone and I think it does play well for 4 people.
    I bought LAMA after watching Gamenight play it. It's really interesting. I think it hits that filler game well. Its feels like No Thanks + Uno and has good mass audience appeal. But it felt like it was nominated just for that aspect.
    If anything, like the group said, the nominations (and recommendations) have all been super interesting and its always fun to see who wins. I think all the games nominated are pretty good.
    Great Video and really interesting discussion. Appreciate all the gameplay and discussion videos of Game Night

    The star system in Carpe Diem is just adding confusion for players. They need to focus a lot more than necessary on planning their path on a circle and have less time/thought power available for the really useful aspects of the game. There is enough complexity in the general mechanics (it took Dave half an hour to explain). This kind of mean trickery is uncalled for. It's like the designer is telling the players "I don't want you to enjoy. I want you to burn your mind even on the most simple task." Which is very ironical when the name of the game invites you to just lay back and enjoy your time.

      @@Nain1982 I think you're really down-playing Wingspan. It's a great light-weight engine builder. Other than Gizmos, I don't know of another game that really scratches that itch in the same way. The amazing components and unique theme are just icing on the cake.

      @@Reggie1408 I believe you may be right. If it doesn't win (in my humble opinion) is because Alea just did a dreadful job in the production. It's a shame, Feld should have won a Spiel by now and this was a great opportunity to do so...yet the publisher just screws him (unintentionally) with that mediocre final product. IF this game would have been improved just in the color of the back of tiles, and a more decent artwork (even if this raised its value by 10-15 dollars ) it would have sold more and be more popular.

    The German version of "Werewords" has an app, too (and a word-list of sorts). Incidentally, with the app and a few scraps of paper you can play an improved version of "Just One" if you really have to. Not my case, I just don't like the game, as mentioned in the video it has rule issues, and overall it just bores me to tears. My pick of these three would be "Lama", without a shadow of doubt. The remedy for anyone who doesn't "get" this game is to play it for money (amounts you can afford to lose!) or any other stakes. Or keep a record of everybody's results in some kind of league format, with a prize for the final winner. You will find that there is A LOT of scope for good (i.e. successful) play in this game. - My favourite for the "Kennerspiel" would have been "Lowlands", which is on the list of recommendations, but not nominated. Boo!

    • @PandaOfElastic
      @PandaOfElastic 5 років тому +1

      Well, I can't find the video you're talking about, but there is literally no mechanical difference, which is proven in this thread, where Feld admits he just didn't think of using a circle while developing it: www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/2052644/suggestion-house-rule-simpler-meeple-movement

    • @christianbarnay2499
      @christianbarnay2499 5 років тому

      @@PandaOfElastic I just read that entire forum thread and it's amazing. Felt admitted on the first page that he didn't even think of the circle during the game design, the reprint with modified design is announced on the 7th or 8th page and they are now at the 10th page with people still throwing pans at each other's head about this.
      What I found most interesting in that thread is a comment saying that maybe the rule is badly worded and should be interpreted as "there is no bounce back, but just in case all other spaces are empty, your journey through empty spaces (always in the same direction) can eventually bring you back to your starting point and this is the only exception to the rule that you must leave your starting point because there is nowhere else to go". It would be really interesting to know if the reprint includes any clarification on that important rule interpretation.

    Have to bag on Carpe Diem's box art...hey, look, it's a board game from 25 years ago...wow, that's an ugly-ass game, that looks like 100 other ugly-ass Euro games...and it's art is not even as good as most of them...AND it's not even a Euro-style game...so why the trading picture on the front cover? Then you open the box and...oh, goodie, 300 little cardboard chits...who doesn't love piles and piles of cardboard?!?! Ugh. Isn't one of the KEY ideas behind the SdJ-KdJ awards to recognize innovation and something NEW? So many games out there are pushing the envelope either with tech (using apps) or taking advantage of lower cost 3D printing (with spectacular minis) or games with great art and components (like Wingspan, or everything from Days of Wonder)...here's a generic box, with generic art and generic components in just another generic tile laying game. It's great these games are out there for people who love them, but I fail to see what makes this game so special it needs to be a nominee to win an award. This game fails on too many levels to be a KdJ nominee IMO. No way it wins the award.

      @@boardgamegeek I have relatives that live in Las Vegas, I can ask them to get me one from there. Thanks.
      You and Nikki should take a side trip to London after on of your adventures to Germany. Go to the St. John's Wood underground station, they sell Beatles things there. Then walk down the street to Abbey Road studio. Get a picture of the two of you walking across the street, then leave a message on the wall in front of the studio. My friend and I did that, as does everyone else.
      Then for dinner go to a restaurant in Covent Garden called Rules. It was a hangout of Dickens, H.G.Welles, and King Edward. It's the oldest restaurant in London, and dripping in Victorian-ness. It is featured in a James Bond film and Downton Abbey. And it's quite affordable.
      If you only can spend a day and a half there, it would be fun just to do that. Maybe squeeze in going to the Victoria and Albert museum. Or go see Mousetrap play. When we went there was a neat little Blues bar right by the theater.
