@@baronvonslambert Technically I'd say REmake looks better than RE4 despite being the same age even with the fantastic HD project retexture by Chris and Albert (yes that's the modders actual names it's awesome) it kinda makes me wish someone would try the same idea now with modern tech cause you could probably get full on photo real with it like have a photo real looking background with baked lighting then have a super simplified 3d model underneath that gets a ray tracing path that effects any non static props and the character model which would also be as photo real as possible. Considering how real games are looking with fully rendered 3d environments just imagine how good the prerendered idea could look now.
@@theninjamaster67 Allow me to rephrase your idea, since I've been preaching the same idea since 2019. You mean, a classic style RE game in 2023: - 2023 8k pre-rendered backgrounds - 4k character models - fixed camera angles - tank controls is this what you mean? because i've been preaching this idea since 2019 and no one seems to acknowledge it
Everything from the original was in the 2002 remake. They changed lots of things, but every enemy, item, puzzle, sequence, note was there, and many other stuffs added that made the game better. I wished they'd kept that philosophy for the RE2 and RE3 remakes where, sadly, too many things were thrown away from the originals...
I dont think 60 frames per second makes a better game. But what DOES impress me the most is the level of absurd detail in REmake. For example run out of ammo and get close to the camera like in a save room with a close up overhead view. You can see the slide of the pistol locked back and the actual inside of the barrel modeled. I was blown away.
@@Walamonga1313 I can respect that. But no matter how popular 60 is now, it’s still subjective. Single player games for me are better at 30fps, especially when it’s a cinematic story telling type (closer to cinema standards 24 but 30 is good for these kinds of games). EDIT: 30fps done right with frame pacing. Spider-man PS4 and FFVII Remake are great examples of that.
You're so right, it is a great remake and with the HD remaster on modern consoles it's still a beautiful looking game. It saddens me that other re make's don't compare.
I did sort of like the strangely sterile mansion of RE1, it had that liminal feeling like the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. It fit well with the bizarre voice acting to make it all feel like a strange dream.
Dreamlike is a pretty good word to describe RE1's atmosphere, I find. I do enjoy it on it's own merits. Although, speaking of The Shining, I remember thinking that whole time "RE1 had to have been inspired by this" even down to the design of the Mansion's main hall. I am sure they were, just interesting to see someone else mention it.
@@JsReviews Yep. That actually reminds me. I had just rewatched your video on the original RE vid. But the original RE was originally supposed to be a remake of the Famicom 8 bit game Sweet Home. I probably should've mentioned that prior to the original RE video. But oh well. That game probably doesn't hold up as much or as well as RE does.
It also fits narratively rather well. The entire mansion is a front, not a real lived environment, so it makes sense if it feels sterile or somehow souless. If depicted that way, it works as environmental foreshadowing, like "something isn't right here, and I am not talking about the weird puzzle lock mechanisms and the strange undead creatures, there is even more hidden" vibe, which is exactly the case.
Something I think this game doesn't get enough credit for is the dude who voices Wesker. I think it's the best voice he's ever had and it's a shame that he only shines in the lab scene
@@texasgent4694 I dig the portrayal of Wesker in the newer games with the serious delivery but I can't help but love the original Wesker sounding so pathetic and wimpy when Chris laughs at him in the lab. In general the original is great cause how funny all the dialogue is with classics like "Here's a lockpick it might be handy if YOU the MASTER of unlocking take it with you.", "It's Forest oh my COD!", "You were almost a JILL sandwich.", and "It's a weapon it's REALLY powerful especially against living things!"(as apposed to dead ones I guess lol) and those are just the best ones by Barry. I honestly just can't help but love shitty dialogue in games and RE1 has tons of it and it's great.
100%. REmake cut nothing, stuck to the fundamentals of RE '96, and added new things that elevated it even further. For me, the biggest thing was the remastered soundtrack. They absolutely nailed it. It was a huge part of the atmosphere. Macabre Hallway is god tier. I suggest people go listen to both the original ost (PS1), then REmakes ost to hear how great a job they did. REmake is a Masterpiece imo.
unfortunately they also totally replaced some themes with bland musics , like still dawn being replaced by the one of a TV romance movie, i was disappointed
@@darkshat3077 Well when you find out that the developers cut enemies for not being 'realistic' and didn't use the cool stylized inventory screen but went for the boring minimalist one... Along with cutting out the A/B scenarios, music, almost all of Leon and Claire's interactions. Terrible I think can be used. Good game, terrible remake.
The original RE1 intro video about the murder cases was very scary. The music and Chris's voiceover always creeped me out. It sure sat the tone for what you were about to experience. That game was really good, they did an amazing job with the environment, mood, characters and music. It also had some groundbreaking mechanics for its time. It was the first game my father bought for me on the ps one, I was 9 then. It was on sale, and I guess my father thought it was an action game. I was traumatized, haha. But it is to this day my favourite game of all time.
I was also 9 or 10. Very scary for a kid but I love it. I agree the beginning is creepy and the feelings of being scared of the game still hold till this day.
7:15 Oh my God, thank you for putting my exact thoughts on remasters and remakes in a visual format. Always had this thought process, but didn't know how to properly visualize it.
REmake still looks beautiful today, it’s ageless, timeless, and the best remake ever made. REmake EARNED that. The team really cared about the game, and it shows.
The most wonderful thing about this remake is that it's absolutely not reductive to the original at all, unless you count the cheese. RE3 being retooled into a linear AAAish modern game experience while getting rid of it's iconic features (live selection, the clock tower) rubbed me the really wrong way, but here they didn't remove a thing but expanded (and shuffled) almost everything that was in the original while also becoming a unique experience on its own, not just the same RE1 but with prettier backdrops.
I disagree with the notion that REmake replaces the original RE1. I think it's on the same realm as something like Yakuza 0, as in it being a prequel, with a ton of nods to the rest of the series than an actual starting point. The original RE1 may be the same story, but it actually plays out different enough that makes it worth experiencing as well, and its version of the story is what the sequels actually build on. I think REmake is the superior game, but in no way it means it's THE one anyone should play. I think both of them are worth experiencing all the same.
RE1 Remake, Crash 1 specifically in the N Sane Trilogy (not 2 or Warped which are better on PS1), and MediEvil on PS4 are the top three examples of great remakes for me.
To be fair about Remake and it's sales, RE4 didn't have all that good of sales either... when they were both Gamecube Exclusives. For the Gamecube, the Remake sold for 1,350,000; For RE4, it was 1,600,000. The difference between one and another for Gamecube Exclusives is that RE4 sold just above 250,000, but nonetheless were overall pretty close to one another as a whole. The reason why RE4 was so successful was because someone outside of Shinji Mikami decided to export it OUT of Gamecube, yet did not give that same treatment to any of the other Gamecube Exclusive RE games, thus damning them. It did not help that Resident Evil as a whole was generally considered more of a Playstation game, and for some reason Shinji Mikami somewhat 'alienated' a lot of former fans of the games by having a lot of the numbered/sequel games be left on the Gamecube, whilst the PS2 generally got what other's considered 'leftovers', whether that is true or not. To put into perspective, RE4 sold 2,300,000 on the Playstation 2. Not only did it inflate and increase the sales already brought in by the Gamecube, but it also sold way more than its gamecube variant by 700,000, more than twice the difference between the Remake and RE4 when they were both former Gamecube Exclusives. This wasn't a choice by Shinji Mikami BTW, as he for some reason hated the playstation... to the point he quit his job when it happened. Which you can take that as you will.
I'll always prefer the OG "96 version. I didn't like the Lisa Trevor addition, nor did I like the changes in the mansion. The voice acting was part of the charm.
note about the shotgun and such. It isnt because you were missing the heads or something. the shotgun actually is not a 100% crit kill if you aim up anymore. its percentage based. its too ensure players dont run around shotgunning them all and then crimson head would not even be a problem or a thing in majority of repeat playthroughs. so they purposely nerfed the shotguns critical percentage.
The subtle 'pan and scan' motion of the widescreen setting adds a lot to the ambience and is the superior option in my opinion. You didn't mention anything about it so I guess you didn't try it at all.
Yeah It was well implemented in RE 1 remaster, unlike RE0 where you can drop items wherever and in the main hall can easily end up being unable to see items you wanna pick up causing a visual glitch which makes it a nightmare to pick up things you dropped, because you cant see them in all camera angles.
Wow, after what you said J, I'm convinced that recent remakes have done either too much or too little. This remake on the other hand did everything just right.
Glad you like Remake. It is still my favorite RE game in the franchise. Gonna add something you might not have known(or maybe you do) and mention how I feel about 2 Remake. For the little bit of info you might not have known, I believe another way to deal with zombies in this game besides shooting off the head or burning is to shoot of one of their legs. Something I believe is rare, but possible from the stairs. Now a little bit of my perspective on 2 Remake if anyone wants to read it: I saw the announcement image of the Resident Evil 2 Remake back before I moved out of my homestate at least 5 to 6 years ago. Knowing what all Remake 1 did with preservation and improvement and knowing about Original Resident Evil 2's complicated development story made feel like the sky was the limit. I felt we could possibly see a little unlockable Elza Walker mode, or maybe even a nod to some of the content that was originally meant to be. Looking back now, this was unrealistic expectations. I still love 2 Remake as a game, but feel it falls flat on its face a little as a remake. The removal of the Crows and Spiders still confuses me to this day when in Remake 1 they were happy to not only keep those 2 enemies, but even keep and improve the sharks. Also I feel 2 remake missed opportunity of Claire and Leon not being able to communicate with each other throughout the story. I also miss the subtle creepiness of Chief Irons in the original.
Yeah there was no reason to cut any content from the game and there's no excuse for the campaigns not connecting very well. So I do think re2 make is a good remake and a great game and re1 make is a great remake and a great game.
Resident Evil 2 Remake was a good remake. I wouldn't consider to be the greatest remake as RE1 remake, Metroid Zero Mission or some remakes that actually stay "faithful" to the original source. The only nitpicks I had with REmake 2 was there was no B scenario for Claire or Leon as in the original, and I guess there wasn't much interaction between Claire & Leon. Resident Evil 3 Remake on the other hand...
13:27 Woah, this is a legit new fact I don't know. In original RE, inserting Red Gemstone will reveal a Magnum whilst inserting a red one will give you snakes, imagine the poison damage.
27:02 Yeah, I liked the RE2 Remake as an alternate take on the game, but the original still remains unsurpassed for me. Maybe it's nostalgia, but I think I played through the original over 20 times in different variations of A and B paths.
"Maybe it's nostalgia" Of course that's what it is but most loyal fans of retro gaming will admit the same thing; nothing wrong with that. As long as we can acknowledge the newer generation as valid, there's nothing wrong with a preference for the old stuff. We are all biased in one way or another; just a matter of admitting it.
it's not just nostalgia, the new remakes failed on mayn aspects, good and fun games both, but a little disappointing, can't replace the original like rebirrth did
@@notsyzagts7967 sorry dude, but like J said, people felt disapointed because the cut content in both Re2 and re3 remakes, not only that but in the Re2R they never flesh out Plant 43, some images show us that Plant 43 was supposed to be a BOSS battle in Re2R, they cut the Regenerator zombies and added to re2 DLC and the Re3 campaign. They remove crows and Spiders that were very iconic, and worst of all a true B scenario. In B they not only change the Re2 layout but added more cutscenes and actual point of view of the other character. You can even leave some weapons and ammo for the B scenario. For all the tech we have, Capcom really didn't want to jump the shark.
@@Rafesco ugh, I hated that in RE2R, they destroyed for completely the A/B scenario mechanic, that's what stops me from enjoying RE2R for completely, that was my favorite aspect from the original, also they removed every radio interaction of Leon and Claire of the original. Same with RE3R, They removed my favorite parts of the game, Jill going back to the RPG (it felt so good going there WITH JILL after playing RE2, especially visiting the STARS office), Brad's epic death at Nemesis hands, and the Clock Tower.
I love this game. I played the original PS1 and this one recently and it's amazing how literally every aspect of the game was expanded. To me, this definetly replaces the original one, unlike RE2R much less RE3R. I feel like if you say you played RE1 and you meant the remake, that would be totally fine. Meanwhile, if you just play RE2R and especially RE3R you'll still miss a lot of the experience so it doesn't completely replaces the original like REmake did.
RE2 and RE3 should have followed the same concept, the fixed angle cams are Resident Evil signature and the gameplay isn't difficult or anything because of it. I would have loved RE2 and 3 receiving the same treatment
RE 1 remake is the perfect example of how to remake of a resident game. Sorely because nothing was cut, more was added to the story to extend it, new mechanics, graphics were updated, gameplay and controls were modernized to be less clunkly. This game came out in 2002 and was remastered in 2015 (yes this is a HD remaster of the 2002 GC version to be avaliable to more modern consoles but the main game is still a remake of the original) . Yet it still looks insane how well the graphics hold up, it still has that creepy atmosphere and is true survival horror. it doesn't try to hold your hand or hint what your objective is. The game forces you to think for yourself and that's also one of it's charms. Even if you aren't a great fan of tank controls, I would recommend this game.
Fun fact. The dogs won't dive through the room at all if you go through the room from the direction of the main hall. I tried it. They only come out if you go backwards, as in you navigate the room in the opposite direction. For that reason I always went through that room from one way, and not the other so I wouldn't have to deal with them.
yeah it really grinds my gears how L modern players keep griping about tank controls being outdated when it's clearly just them not wanting to get good and familiarize with it. I also grow up playing modern over-the-shoulder games and still able to use tank controls easily.. SMH
The initial bad reception on Gamecube was definitely franchise fatigue. Resident Evil games had mostly been same-ish since the original on PS1. RE4 proves that the "more mature" audience was there on Gamecube, but they were waiting for a title that really shook things up. I remember getting Gamecube just because Resident Evil became Nintendo exclusive at the time. There was no talk about ports on other consoles. RE was supposed to be exclusive to Gamecube. I think bad sales got Capcom out of the deal or something along those lines. I recommend checking out Resident Evil Outbreak games if you haven't yet. I think those games perfected the classic RE gameplay. Their stories and overall structure might not be as solid since they were meant to be played in episodes, but they are the true survival horror experience imo, even more so than REmake.
The remasters don't have any lighting issues and if 60fps is a deal breaker for you I don't know what to say because 30fps is perfectly fine. REmake is easily the best RE game in my opinion but CVX is still incredible.
Awesome Review! But for me the original gamecube has Directorial Lighting as opposed to the HD remakes which used game engine lighting. Its a small thing that you pointed out but it really effects the atmosphere for me.
16:31 The idea that one character is harder than the other is somewhat subjective. I did a run through with Chris on REmake for the first time in years, remembering him as the harder character. But I discovered that his advantages do outweigh the negatives and by the end of my play through I felt like Chris was easier than Jill. Chris has a number of advantages. For one, he can take considerably more damage than Jill which can be especially helpful during boss fights. Second, he readies his firearm faster than Jill which may seem like a small thing but when you compare the two, it feels like Jill takes forever to raise her gun compared to Chris, making it easier for Chris to shoot and run with higher reaction times - this is most noticeable when you watch Jill try to lift the rocket launcher. Chris may have a limited arsenal but he gets an ass load of shotgun rounds which is one of the best weapons in the game. Having limited weapons actually means less need for inventory slots. I would often only carry the shotgun in my inventory, sometimes even during boss fights like the snake. You can even get away with only carrying the loaded shotgun while not carrying extra ammo during the less dangerous parts of the game, freeing another slot.
I love how, in Chris’ campaign, the game puts 2 Old keys in close proximity: one in the east storage room, and the other in the bedroom upstairs that you unlocked with the helmet key. So you get 2 CHANCES to use that key correctly to unlock the graveyard shortcut
I believe RE1 and RE2 both had really good remakes that do things right. With both updating the games to be up to date with games releasing at those times while keeping most of what was loved about the original intact. RE3 remake was a disappointment but hopefully the remake of 4 will take notes from the 1 and 2 remakes as well as RE8.
you mentioned that the dog hallway's windows don't break immediately and instead break later, but that's not the case. the window cracks when you first enter, then when you go through the hallway the other way (enter through east wing, walk through, exit by main hall), the dogs get in. if you play it smart and use it as a one-way hallway, you can go through the whole game without encountering them. also, the jill sandwich scene only plays in the remake if you try to get the shotgun before the cutscene where barry gives you the acid rounds (and you interact with both doors)
Actually it's the same in the original, technically. If you go to the 2F and meet Barry at Forest' place instead of using the Lockpick to go through the east wing of the 1F, he will give you the Bazooka instead of the Rounds, and he will no longer appear at the Shotgun Room to save Jill, and you will also get alternative scenes with him, you will find him at the room where you have to drain the fish tank, and the file there will be incomplete because Barry destroyed some of the pages, following this route Jill actually starts to get suspicious of Barry earlier.
To this day, REmake is still the absolute best of the resident evil remakes, even above rem4ke and... Re2make? REmake2? Idk that one doesn't have the funny name potential.
I can never pick one over the other. RE runs deep in my veins and childhood. It’s also the most respected series of all video games as it has so many great remakes, more so than any series in gaming. Capcom deserve an award for being a dev that’s been so damn good to it’s series (heck DMC too). Any time they had a controversial game (RE6, DmC etc) they came back righted their wrongs
I don't know about the controller settings but on pc you can change the KB&M settings to be anything you want. I ended up settling on a full keyboard only setup and not even using the mouse.
7:49 I hate tank controls in games with a free moving camera (the default PC controls for RE4 are absolutely terrible, like you have the mouse, but unless you mod the game in order to have it actually do anything, you may as well just use the keyboard) but playing with the fixed camera I find tank controls a lot nicer than full movement
Even though RE1 remake on the GameCube sold poorly you could say that it would go on to become a cult classic among DieHard Resident Evil gamers. The re1 remake for the GameCube may have fell into obscurity for a short while but then in 2013 they re-released that remake for pc, ps3, and Xbox 360 as HD collection with modern day enhanced graphics and quality so you could say that it received the cult following because die hard Resident Evil gamers will often go back and replay the re1 remake. The re1 remake if you ask me is more faithful when it comes down to Resident Evil remix compared to the re2 remakes of two and three. But as for Resident Evil 4 remake let's just wait and see.
I feel like you are one of the few new age resident evil fans that agrees with me that RE1 getting an RE2 style remake would be a bad thing. It is the best remake & acts as the best chance for anybody who's played the newer games to go back to the older style as it does it so well. RE2 remake is good but it doesn't make many want to play the originals as its too modern if it was like RE1 remake this might be different. But I really don't like all these remakes being made we should have the Capcom teams working on newer side games instead of remaking games that don't need them the only exceptions being RE0 & RE code Veronica but the rest past 4 can't be remade because they aren't bad they aren't in need of a remake & they work best where they are. A more horror form of 5 & 6 doesn't really work as they are designed for another style of game.
The answer to your question, J, is 100% yes. It absolutely is. While I actually prefer og RE1 (nostalgia), there is no better remake of anything than REmake
Something great about REmake that you didn’t mention is how the game still screws with you on subsequent replays. Not only does it use your knowledge of the original Resident Evil against you (the Cerberus hallway being the obvious example) but it uses your knowledge of the REmake against you on replays. The grenade-laden “One Dangerous Zombie” is a fun addition that once unlocked, CANNOT be disabled. There’s also how Tyrant will straight up PARRY the rocket launcher shot in the final battle. He still has the decency to die to a follow up shot (one time he parried me twice though) but still….
@@Walamonga1313 ah, so you took the coward’s way out I see. Forrest is actually pretty easy to deal with. Once you learn, he goes from a lethal threat to a free pass. The secret is that he had a HUGE windup when he goes to grab you. More than enough time to be somewhere else, even in tight quarters. Once you come back to the Mansion from the Residence, Forrest is gone anyway, so it’s not like he’s chasing you for the whole game.
Re2 Remake wouldve been perfect if they didnt cut the original story and content. Because if it had this games approach to being an actual remake while keeping the over the shoulder camera, it wouldve been the best.
There’s something special around around the period of 4th, 5th, and even 6th generation console games that has been lost. Maybe it’s the variety in games. The creative uses of limitations. Possibly more games being pick up and play experiences, rather than being something to get immersed in. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I’d rather play something like this than The Witcher 3. Tried 3 times to get into Witcher 3 and really all I want to do is douse that world of misery and despair in a highly flammable substance and watch it burn. At this point I’d be more than happy if AAA game become a thing of the past. Fun has been sacrificed for “the experience” that’s the best explanation I can come up with. 🤷♂️
Yep👌especially if u wanna know what the other STARS team went thru before Chris n Jill got there. RE0 doesn't even take place in the mansion, but in the surrounding area and on a train. I enjoyed it.
Good vid, You missed some things in the original that were kind of 'highlighted' in the remake, for example the Rebecca being attacked by the Hunter scene is in the original it's just more secluded and you have to explore into the area by yourself. There's a good forum post on the gameFAQs forum that highlights all the 'missables' of which there's quite a lot (I know you highlighted those you found out later such as Brad Shotgun in Remake which I did enjoy, almost a homage to those missables), I still find things like how fast you do the Yawn Serum section in Chris' determines if you have the help on Plant 42 interesting for example in og. I do agree it mostly supersede the original albeit I'm not a fan of the addition of the defensive items which Zero had too
I need to play RE1 remake again. I completed the entire game and the trophy list to 100% on PS4 years back and haven’t really played it since. RE1 original was my first RE game and found myself wanting a PlayStation because of it. Played it a ton and than RE2 released and it took over as my most played game. With the sales from the RE remake when it came out on GameCube was due to audience of the GC being way younger and that the game was an exclusive for it. Wasn’t a great decision.
I can't watch the full video until later, but, going off of the video title, I would say yes- To me, this game, and Metroid: Zero Mission, are the gold standards in video game remakes.
The REmake being sold as a Gamecube exclusive was definitely what caused its low sales. I don't think franchise fatigue set until RE0. But considering how the established playerbase for the games used to be on the Playstation and very few would move on to another company plus, like you mention, the established Nintendo fanbase wasn't really that much into this style of game. This was the worst possible console for the game in terms of potential sales. This is what scared Capcom off the Nintendo exclusivity contract. While it's true that they went in a different direction for RE4 they also didn't waste any time in announcing an upcoming PS2 version.
And then they Ported RE4 to basically everything that existed... Seriously, the Original RE4 could give the OG Doom a run for it's money with how many ports it had.
skipping the door animations is a good option to have and all but I don’t know, to me it just doesn’t feel like RE without the door animations. they really can help add some tension and suspense when you don’t know whether or not an enemy will be behind that door or not
The original mansion felt like being trapped inside a furniture wholesale store 😂 The bright lights, general cleanliness, the old but still new-looking furniture, and the lack of a “lived in” vibe. The remake mansion is definitely better.
No, The remake mansion is not better. The original is better because the mansion in the original makes you feel that there's a family living in it because the mansion looks modern and so bright. but in the remake, the mansion is dark and full of candles, and this gives the feeling that it is a very old mansion or abandoned although the game takes place in 1998 and not in 1898 so the candles seems out of place, and this killed the mystery from the first moment you entered the mansion.
@@michaelmyers7039 exactly. New mansion tries hard to be scary without actually understanding the nature of horror resident evil presents. It looks cartoonishly scary
@@sweetcalamaresIt's made quite clear in CV that the mansion was built in the 60s. Therefore the original RE was far more accurate in its design. Whilst I absolutely agree that the REmake is utterly brilliant visually, they dropped the ball by making the mansion look too gothic. It's a virus outbreak, not a ghost story.
The original was the first time I saw someone be actually afraid for real of a videogame. Granted I got it when it came out, and my sister is only 2 years younger than me, but I thought she would like it in a similar way that I did, but she actually cried and asked me to turn it off... The 90s... good times. The only videogame that made me truly afraid was Silent Hill 3, I was in my teens, but there was a night I got that real type of fear, the one that is truly unpleasant and hurts. Guess it was the environment, given I was alone in the middle of the night. I miss getting that feeling from a game, it never happened again, and now reaching my 40s, I doubt I will ever have anything close to that, but it is what it is, life.
REMake is goated imo. It sure does depress me to know there are assets in RE Zero (the tram/train station) used in the the latter half of the game that are the marshalling yard from RE2 classic. It feels like such a tease. Idk I'd pay 120$ for each individual copy of RE2/3/CV given the REMake upgrade.
the remake really is timeless. and adding lisa trevor into this game just made it even better. her story is really messed up. i always felt burning the zombies was rather pointless and a waste of time. the crimson heads are fast but they really don't take that much damage. i recently played thru chris and jill on hard, and didnt feel the need to burn a single zombie. the only reason the remake sold poorly was because it was a GC exclusive. major L doing that when everyone had the PS2 at that time
One thing that pissed us old-school fans about Re2r is we waited ALMOST 20 YEARS for this treatment. Plus a fan was making a remake, he added oTS and FPS if you wanted it, coop, MILLIONS of new features. Capcom shut it down. Everybody was pissed but "hey at least RE2make came out". Now we got a lot of removed content dedicated to newbies, and when they made their announcement video "We do it" (because it was that asked for) they tried cutting basic stuff like the crocodile. (A staffer fought for that to stay in) but b scenarios are pretty much gone. And now everybody is like "tank controls suck" umm Tony hawk games suck? Thank controls "outdated" is a personal choice that's like saying "call of duty should have over the shoulder"... No that ain CoD. Then (going back to "we do it") they said to AND I QUOTE "CONTACT WITH YOUR IDEAS" Elza Walker was a fan wish, old school soundtrack and defense items are fan wishes.... 2 of those are PAID DLC that's BS. (My phone recently broke so this is my mom's profile/phone. I'd appreciate if y'all didn't dog her device if you disagree)
Funny thing is I’m actually playing the modern day RE games right now to prepare for RE4make and have finished everything except RE3make which will definitely be an interesting game to play through
There was one thing that the REmake lost from the original in that there were a little less branching paths for the characters but the amount that it _gained_ over the original was so vast that it blows this slight niggle out of the water. The RE2 remake however lost so much from its original game that it was _really_ noticeable despite its gains (and for some reason removed all references to RE1 as well). Then the RE3 remake didn't even try to be faithful. I tell a lie, there was one other thing missing from RE1's remake - interesting closing titles. The original's were fun and rewarding, the remake's were generic and dull.
People inflate RE1remake while conveniently dismissing changes/cuts that was brought forth. Re1remake changed/removed the following; Script, the infamous Jill sandwich line was butchered and all the original script/dialogue was thrown out Characters; while the remake opted for a grounded take, it fails in what it sets out to accomplish. The characters have cardboard cutout personalities and don't react accordingly to the horrors unfolding around them. Even worse is Rebecca's inconsistent portrayal between the events of 0 and the time she wound up in the mansion with RE1 Story; no effort was made to diversify the campaigns between Chris and Jill, instead we have a rehashing mirrored stories in which both sides play out identically. This raises the issue of true canon, which side actually occured? Because both overlap incoherently. Furthermore the remake failed to include the true canonical ending with all 4 STARS members escape the mansion via helipad. This omission with no attempt to rectify is confounding. I've aforementioned the choice system presented in the original was simplified to merely 1 decision in the remake. Why? Baffling design choice. Shotgun; the 100% headshot decapitations was removed in the remake and instead randomised Aesthetic/tone; gone are the days of the brightly lit, homely, inhibited halls of the mansion in favour of... Drumroll... The Mickey mouses haunted house aesthetic in the remake. Such a drastic change didn't hit the mark and ditches the tone established in the original. Sadly the remake seems to avoid any critique or fans alike dismiss any and all genuine downgrades. It shouldn't be exempt/free from points of contention.
I absolutely loved this game when it released. I had played the original when I was young, like 10 (?) years old and played it with my younger brither watching and we had a blast. When Remake came out it was everything I wanted from the original and thensome. I recall a lot of people complaining about tank controls but to me its thise controls that make the limited gameplay much more engaging. Then Remake comes and makes the pre-rendered backgrounds absolutely stunning, it's so good! It's a shame that back then too many people wouldn't give it a chance. I would have preferred RE2RE and RE3RE get THIS treatment, but at least for RE2RE it's still a very good game despite scenario B getting butchered. RE3RE had a lot going for it but... RE3 is actually a better experience imho
Quit lying. You didn’t play this game as a kid. You played it later as a teen or adult. Roughly 80-90% who claimed to have played games like these when they were kids are lying. And nothing you say will convince me otherwise.
As a new RE fan, it’s so freaking confusing how they don’t label titles as “remake.” I had no idea that the RE1 on switch was a remake, and I probably would have bought it sooner if I had.
the falling ceiling when you get the shotgun, you trigger the cut scene by interacting with the two doors. Played it on the switch and when i did this, the cut scene triggered. I didn't even know you could get squished tbh.
Honestly, my main issue with Remakes, any remake, even good ones like this, is the absence of the original's as ports, feels like more and more emulation is the only way to go back and check them out, i don't think an RE Collection would be that hard to pull off, sure it wouldn't be as interesting as Deadly Silence which is just RE1 + QoL gameplay additions, but it's something, i'd gladly pay for it, and i think a lot of other people would too. But yeah, Remake is just a masterpiece, it is peak RE, and probably like, a perfect game, which sounds like overhyping it, but its just a perfect game, it does everything it wants to do perfectly and then it ends, its like, flawless and the way the backgrounds are and even the stylization the humans have (not entirely going for realistic but fitting the background enough) makes it somehow kinda timeless? Its been a while and nothing about it jumps out as ''oh this looks shit'' or ''oh this aspect looks better than that'', and that's weird for a semi-real 3D game, usually timeless stuff is overly stylized stuff like Wind Waker, idkw RE and RE0 (Even if i don't like it) are visually timeless and still impresses a bit. (resposted this a bunch cause i was having trouble with Google/UA-cam stuff, yep still i am, dunno why its getting my name wrong, thanks google)
5:08 The Wii version supports the GameCube controller (and if you emulate you can pick any controller you want) and it has 60fps too while having the original backgrounds. I am emulating it using Dolphin, and it noticeably has a better framerate than emulating the GameCube version with the same settings, so it is not because of overclocking. Also it is one disc rather than two so no switching when you get to the lab. Also the HD Remaster nerfed the grenade launcher firing distance. The reason for the poor AI upscaled backgrounds (that is not present in RE Zero) is because they lost the source files for the backgrounds for this game. Some music tracks in HD Remaster are too fast but that can be patched with a mod, and there also is the HD Project redoing the upscaled backgrounds since AI upscaling has come a long way since 2014, kind of similar to what happened between 5th and 6th generation consoles.
The graphics for Resident Evil remake still hold up today. Love this game.
Even on the GameCube RE1 Remake has aged well, I've been binge playing through them again recently
And that was 20 years ago... If you compare with RE original, it's 1976
I played it earlier this year, its still really good
@@baronvonslambert Technically I'd say REmake looks better than RE4 despite being the same age even with the fantastic HD project retexture by Chris and Albert (yes that's the modders actual names it's awesome) it kinda makes me wish someone would try the same idea now with modern tech cause you could probably get full on photo real with it like have a photo real looking background with baked lighting then have a super simplified 3d model underneath that gets a ray tracing path that effects any non static props and the character model which would also be as photo real as possible.
Considering how real games are looking with fully rendered 3d environments just imagine how good the prerendered idea could look now.
@@theninjamaster67 Allow me to rephrase your idea, since I've been preaching the same idea since 2019.
You mean, a classic style RE game in 2023:
- 2023 8k pre-rendered backgrounds
- 4k character models
- fixed camera angles
- tank controls
is this what you mean? because i've been preaching this idea since 2019 and no one seems to acknowledge it
Everything from the original was in the 2002 remake.
60 frames makes a better experience
30 fps is fine for certain types of games, the "movie" look fits survival horror better than the "soap opera" look, IMO.
Racing games would likely benefit most from 60 fps but games like this are fine at 30. In fact, make it 22 for a more film like feel.😊
RE4 too
Yes. Yes it is. It's the gold standard of remakes. The ideal to strive towards
it's not a remake
You're so right, it is a great remake and with the HD remaster on modern consoles it's still a beautiful looking game. It saddens me that other re make's don't compare.
@@bobmclovinelectricboogaloo The other remakes arent remakes, more reimaginings, and the second one is great.

Personally Richard Waugh was always my favorite RE Wesker voice actor, He did Weskers's voice for RE Zero, RE Code Veronica and RE4
@@texasgent4694 I really like how he sold the sadistic side of Wesker without being over the top.
@@texasgent4694 couldn't agree more
@@texasgent4694 I dig the portrayal of Wesker in the newer games with the serious delivery but I can't help but love the original Wesker sounding so pathetic and wimpy when Chris laughs at him in the lab.
I honestly just can't help but love shitty dialogue in games and RE1 has tons of it and it's great.
peter Jessop was meh. doesn't beat Richard waught and dc Douglas
REmake is a Masterpiece imo.
the re2 remake and re3make are hot trash garbage. it's a loosely based remake, not original at all. the 3rd remake was ABSOLUTE trash
unfortunately they also totally replaced some themes with bland musics , like still dawn being replaced by the one of a TV romance movie, i was disappointed
While I wouldn't go so far as to say those remakes were garbage games. They were terrible remakes, and the worst thing is they sold well.

Good game, terrible remake.
This is a no contest for me. Remake is not only my favorite RE, it’s my favorite survival horror so far
Nah fam, Chris laughing at Wesker is such a classic move that it's so memorable.

With the change between 1996 re1 and the 2002 Remake being so drastic, no wonder the 6th generation was the most revolutionary of them all.
They're both great without question, but something always brings me back to the 96 one. It's just too damn adorable.
REmake is the exception to the rule for all remakes. I don't know how old you are, but it was wild when it came out on GC.
3:24 it always bugged me that the mansion has been zombified for a month but someone has been going around lighting fresh candles.

Now see here, them loading door transitions was everything back in the day, added more supense! :)
Yeah, I always found them kinda eerie. It added to the creepiness of the games and so I had no issues with the door loading screens.
They add suspense until you actually PLAY THE GAME.
We just had the clocktower in REmake 2 so I didn't mind skipping it since I play 2 and 3 back to back. I prefer 3.

I think this might be the best game ever made, so yes I think it is.

Just to be clear, it is the best game ever made. Good call!

fanboy.
REmake is the only game I've ever given a 10/10. The brilliant blueprint on how to do a remake.
How you feel about REmake4? For me, it's up there with this game. I might even like it better.. they are both in my top 10, all time.
RE1 Remake, Crash 1 specifically in the N Sane Trilogy (not 2 or Warped which are better on PS1), and MediEvil on PS4 are the top three examples of great remakes for me.
@MonkeyMheanTheIIIth Why? I'm just in the middle of Separate Ways and loving it.
The mickey mouse haunted house aesthetic for the mansion adopted in the remake was another blunder.
Great seeing you making more RE stuff! Love the channel, man!
And to think it's only 6 years between these two game it's kinda crazy.
note about the shotgun and such.
Tank controls are necessary for fixed camera angles, otherwise every time the camera changes your character will switch directions.
This game made me appreciate Resident Evil 7 way more because I had no idea how many of it’s puzzles and tropes were influenced by RE1 Remake.
So I do think re2 make is a good remake and a great game and re1 make is a great remake and a great game.
concept art is better than the the remake of 2 lol
Recently I've gone back and played through the RE Games, I'm perfectly fine with Old School RE2 and RE3 because that's what I grew up on Lol
It's pretty dope that RE claims arguably the best pure remake AND best reimagining of a game, in the same series, and canonically one game apart.
Tank controls are fine and easy to use. If you struggle, it's user error for sure.
yeah it really grinds my gears how L modern players keep griping about tank controls being outdated when it's clearly just them not wanting to get good and familiarize with it.
You Forgot To Show The Original Resident Evil Director’s Cut For PS1 That Came With The Resident Evil 2 Demo Disc

Small note: the taser battery was counted as a "Burn" and any zombie downed by it will not turn into a crimson.
Didn't know that, it makes sense tho since it cooks them lol.
Really wish they’d go back to the fixed view camera angles. First & third person povs just are not Resident evil.
you mentioned that the dog hallway's windows don't break immediately and instead break later, but that's not the case. the window cracks when you first enter, then when you go through the hallway the other way (enter through east wing, walk through, exit by main hall), the dogs get in. if you play it smart and use it as a one-way hallway, you can go through the whole game without encountering them.
also, the jill sandwich scene only plays in the remake if you try to get the shotgun before the cutscene where barry gives you the acid rounds (and you interact with both doors)
Great video but I think the door loading screens add a nice layer of tension, especially during first play throughs
It would've sold very well if it was on ps2 but for some reason Capcom thought a game like that would shine on game cube SMH
I have no nostalgia. I tried remake and hated it. Tried original and liked it. Beat the remake and still hate it.
Yeah, nobody gives a fuck @@vazazell5967
When Chris laughed and Wesker goes "stop it" made me laugh. It sound like he was being bullied.
I never knew about red tiger eye and snakes trap. Holy shit
Have 2 different save files for Chris and Jill. Never have to deal with Forrest, good riddance
@@Richterdgf Forest genuinely sounds creepy in that game as well in ODZ mode. the zombies in the newer remakes sound like trash
@@Walamonga1313 that was smart. I also always have 2 separate files for them.
Re2 Remake wouldve been perfect if they didnt cut the original story and content. Because if it had this games approach to being an actual remake while keeping the over the shoulder camera, it wouldve been the best.
100000% agreed
This applies to RE3R as well.
7:00 This is what I believe a remake should always strive to be. Using the original as a foundation and only adding, not altering/changing anything.
Should I get the remake and 0 combo pack?
Yep👌especially if u wanna know what the other STARS team went thru before Chris n Jill got there. RE0 doesn't even take place in the mansion, but in the surrounding area and on a train. I enjoyed it.
I think what's really great about the Lisa trever story is how it expands the other games too as the G virus has it's origin in Lisa trever.
I do agree it mostly supersede the original albeit I'm not a fan of the addition of the defensive items which Zero had too
How do you get the game to run 60 FPS on PC? I seem to be locked at 30 frames and I have no idea how to fix that.
Metroid Zero mission love!
One of the best games ever made!😻💕
Hope RE4 Remake is just as good if not better than the original 😍
@AuranCrash Only 3 remake was mediocre. The second one was great.
@AuranCrash I think because it wasn’t a remake, more a reimagining.
it will be good no doubt, but probably not better than the original, at least not in everything
@AuranCrash They removed stuff, added stuff. I think "re-imagining" is an adequate term for it. Nothing lazy about it.
@AuranCrash Totally this, for completely. 👍
skipping the door animations is a good option to have and all but I don’t know, to me it just doesn’t feel like RE without the door animations. they really can help add some tension and suspense when you don’t know whether or not an enemy will be behind that door or not
Re1 ps1 was my favorite game ever, so imagine my surprise upon playing this gem after convincing myself it was going to blow.
Best
Remake
Ever
Made
The original mansion felt like being trapped inside a furniture wholesale store 😂 The bright lights, general cleanliness, the old but still new-looking furniture, and the lack of a “lived in” vibe.
@@michaelmyers7039 if you read the diary entries you’ll note the mansion is old as hell.
@H0ll0ws.0f.ThE.v0id i've literally played both versions the same year. I'm game design and accessibility freak
Are we supposed to think routinely lightning corpses on fire wouldn't burn down the mansion? It doesn't ruin the game or anything.
The only reason I never got the remake is because of crimson heads.
REMake is goated imo. It sure does depress me to know there are assets in RE Zero (the tram/train station) used in the the latter half of the game that are the marshalling yard from RE2 classic. It feels like such a tease. Idk I'd pay 120$ for each individual copy of RE2/3/CV given the REMake upgrade.
the remake really is timeless. and adding lisa trevor into this game just made it even better. her story is really messed up.
i always felt burning the zombies was rather pointless and a waste of time. the crimson heads are fast but they really don't take that much damage. i recently played thru chris and jill on hard, and didnt feel the need to burn a single zombie.
the only reason the remake sold poorly was because it was a GC exclusive. major L doing that when everyone had the PS2 at that time
And also, I think most of the fanbase at that time was gathered mainly on PS overall.
The reason RE Remake didnt sell well was because it was on Gamecube! If it was on PS2 it would have dominated.
Funny thing is I’m actually playing the modern day RE games right now to prepare for RE4make and have finished everything except RE3make which will definitely be an interesting game to play through
As long as you go in knowing they cut a load of content re3make is great to play, short but sweet i thought, good replayability as well
I thought Resident Evil 1 remake and 0 were awesome when they came out. They still look really good which is a real feat of the designers.
Mad how it's 2 decades and it still looks gorgeous. Never thought the gamecube was that powerful
Re1remake changed/removed the following;
Script, the infamous Jill sandwich line was butchered and all the original script/dialogue was thrown out
Characters; while the remake opted for a grounded take, it fails in what it sets out to accomplish. The characters have cardboard cutout personalities and don't react accordingly to the horrors unfolding around them. Even worse is Rebecca's inconsistent portrayal between the events of 0 and the time she wound up in the mansion with RE1
Story; no effort was made to diversify the campaigns between Chris and Jill, instead we have a rehashing mirrored stories in which both sides play out identically.
Shotgun; the 100% headshot decapitations was removed in the remake and instead randomised
Aesthetic/tone; gone are the days of the brightly lit, homely, inhibited halls of the mansion in favour of...
Yes and it is the best in the series. Improves everything and adds so much more.
I might agree if I could play it. Can't stand that fixed camera junk.
re4 better tho
As a new RE fan, it’s so freaking confusing how they don’t label titles as “remake.” I had no idea that the RE1 on switch was a remake, and I probably would have bought it sooner if I had.
REmake was amazing
RE2make was amazing
RE3make was ok
RE4 hopefully will be amazing
If you explore too much of the mansion you'll miss the window for Barry to help you when you are locked in the room with the falling ceiling.
Just got the Platinum on the Remake. And you're right, if you try to open both doors wnhen you take the shotgun Barry saves you.
the falling ceiling when you get the shotgun, you trigger the cut scene by interacting with the two doors.
