People sell from their collection. Have you ever changed your mind about owning something a year later. The guy wanted 25k. Rick gave him 24k. I'm sure the guy was happy not being offered lower and going home with new money.
They both came out content with the transaction. The seller valued the $24k more than the coin, or else he wouldn’t have sold it for that. Rick valued the coin more than he did the money he spent on it, and likewise with the next deal.
Smart purchase. Those coins are always very undervalued in my opinion. Over time the price should go through the roof as only 10 were minted. I think a lot of people don't collect them because they are so scarce it would be impossible to acquire a proper collection of them. Most collectors want a complete set so to avoid collecting coins that never circulated they are keeping the price down because they know if they collected these and considered them a part of their collections the prices would skyrocket. It's not an organized effort to keep prices low just most people don't even try to collect coins with such limited runs. It's an odd effect on the price and Rick was smart to buy it as it will only go up in value, IMO. It's the kind of coin that should be in a museum and if Rick loaned it to one to display for a year or two I bet demand would go through the roof as more people would realise it even exists.
That customer is Jeff Garret, The President of the American Numismatic Association. Why in the world would a big time coin dealer like that be trying to sell a coin in a pawn shop, knowing he will not make the money that he could make from a private buyer, especially since he likely has a large customer base. Seems fishy. Surely this couldn't be scripted?
David Vagi, Peter Treglia, Frederick Bart have also been on his show in various capacities. They're all in the money biz. Vagi was a top grader; he played Rick's coin expert for a few years. The others are dealers. Why go to a pawn shop? To see what you can get. Rick's cash is as good as anyone else's. Of course, you have to have sit on most coins/bills for a number of years to make a profit after Rick takes his percentage. There was a boom in coins/bills from around 05 to 11 that was the best time to buy/sell coins/bills. Rick mentioned the boom in another coin segment (for an 1809 over 8 $5 gold piece).
